Passengers of a cruise ship where 218 people became infected with coronavirus have spent over a week quarantined off Japan's coast. They spoke to Brut about what their day-to-day has been like.
Transcript
00:00Hi, this is David Abel from Yokohama in Japan.
00:03We are on a quarantined ship, the Diamond Princess.
00:08We are now confined to the staterooms
00:11on the instructions of the Japanese health officials.
00:15I don't think room service is available anymore.
00:19So, it's going to be an interesting day, isn't it?
00:23Ten passengers have proved their samples were taken
00:28and they have proved positive to the coronavirus.
00:32So, we are officially quarantined for 14 days in Japan.
00:39All the services on board the ship, including food, have been stopped
00:42because the source of the virus has not been determined
00:49and they now think it could be the food that is spreading it.
00:52The meals have completely changed.
00:55We are definitely no longer on a luxury cruise.
00:58It's going to be like a floating prison.
01:02So, Japan are saying that we now have 20 passengers from this ship
01:08who have tested positive for the virus.
01:10Hopefully, we will be home by Christmas.
01:16But now we have 20 confirmed infected passengers with the coronavirus.
01:22And what happens at the end of this quarantine period?
01:25I mean, there's no guarantee it's going to be 14 days now.
01:29It could be longer.
01:3041 additional passengers being found positive, tested for the coronavirus.
01:37One of whom is a friend of ours on honeymoon
01:41who was going to be split from his wife on honeymoon.
01:47He is going to be taken to a medical facility.
01:50I don't need to wear this,
01:52but I just thought you would like to see what they've supplied us with.
01:57This sounds as if I'm complaining and I'm not
01:59because I'm really grateful for everything the ship is doing.
02:04The virus, another 70 people.
02:07It appears that we are going to be the next lot of passengers
02:12allowed to walk on the top deck.
02:14Our deck, not necessarily us.
02:16Live on deck, if you can hear me.
02:19There won't be much audio from me,
02:21but it's just so you can see what's going on.
02:23OK?
02:24There's the pair of us.
02:26Are they supplying alcohol yet?
02:29No, no.
02:30I've got something really fantastic to share with you.
02:34You see this?
02:35You see this?
02:36It's whiskey.
02:38That is...
02:38Oh, that is dog, isn't it?
02:40Mexican beef.
02:41Oh, beef.
02:42Stop talking about dogs.
02:44Stop talking about dogs.
02:46Every passenger is going to receive a 100% refund.
02:51None of us know what's around the corner.
02:54You know, as I was saying and Sally was saying yesterday,
02:57our biggest fear is when we get the knock at the door
02:59and they come in to test us.
03:01If one of us is positive and the other is negative,
03:04being split up after 50 years of marriage,
03:07one of us having to go into the hospital,
03:10it's going to be very tough.
03:12I'm currently with my grandmother.
03:15Due to the quarantine, we have been confined to our rooms,
03:18which means that we are isolated from the other passengers.
03:21If this was an actual movie, it would be pretty boring
03:26because on the most part, everything is pretty contained.
03:42We cannot leave the cabin unless we're scheduled to go on to open deck.
03:56And even then, we must come back straight to our cabin once that's completed.
04:01And in the room, I guess you try to stay busy all day whenever you can.
04:07Throughout the day, crew members do come to our rooms
04:10to deliver food and water and other things we may need.
04:14But they're wearing gloves and masks.
04:26The cases of the virus that are appearing now
04:42are probably due to before the quarantine when we were mingling together.
04:48So the virus isn't actually spreading through the ship right now
04:52because we are isolated.
04:55Personally, I'm not afraid to get the virus.
04:58The crew have worked really hard to keep it so that it doesn't spread.
05:07I'm really hoping that my body will help me in staying healthy while I'm in quarantine.
05:24The
05:51Japanese Health Authority now insists that all passengers have to remain in their cabins.
06:06Guests who test positive will be disembarked
06:10to a medical facility ashore to continue their quarantine.
06:22For
06:24those who are still being tested,
06:26we plan to continue the quarantine operation
06:28by implementing these measures
06:30one after the other.
06:32That's what we're aiming to do.
06:51you
