02:08It looks like the whole story might have come from one well-known hoaxer from the 1880s
02:13who probably invented the David Lange story as part of a lying contest.
02:19Over time, the tale became a piece of local legend.
02:23Another mystical disappearance supposedly took place in Prussia.
02:28On November 25, 1809, in Perleberg, a man walked into an inn, ordered dinner, and vanished
02:35into thin air.
02:37It was Benjamin Bathurst, a British diplomat traveling under the alias Baron de Caulle.
02:43He was running away from Napoleon's spies.
02:47After writing for hours in a private room in the White Swan Inn, he stepped out and
02:52headed for his carriage.
02:54But when his assistant arrived moments later, Bathurst was gone.
02:59News of his disappearance didn't reach England for weeks, and when it did, his wife, Felida
03:04Bathurst, rushed to Prussia.
03:07Together with a search party, she was scouring a nearby river and every corner of Perleberg.
03:14Then strange clues began appearing.
03:17Bathurst's expensive fur coat, worth a fortune, turned up hidden in a stable.
03:22Weeks later, two old women scavenging in the woods, miles from Perleberg, found his pantaloons.
03:29A stablehand at the White Swan Inn, August Schmidt, became a prime suspect.
03:34His mother had stolen Bathurst's coat, and a woman from a nearby coffeehouse swore that
03:39Schmidt had chased after Bathurst that night.
03:43So, he probably took the life of the British guest.
03:47But as a lump sum was offered as a reward, false leads and rumors flooded in, and it
03:52was harder and harder to learn the truth.
03:55Felida Bathurst refused to give up and went to Napoleon Bonaparte himself, hoping to hear
04:00some answers, but he denied that it had to do with him.
04:05To this day, Benjamin Bathurst's fate remains a chilling mystery.
04:10Investigator Mike Dash, who did his own investigation of this case in 1990, came to the conclusion
04:16that people were just adding mysterious details to it over the years.
04:20In reality, someone just took Benjamin's life that night.
04:26Over a century after Benjamin's disappearance, in a completely different part of the world,
04:31a man named James Tedford stepped onto a bus, took his seat, and then somehow vanished into
04:39thin air before reaching his destination.
04:42It happened on December 1st, 1949, when he was traveling back to Bennington, Vermont
04:47after visiting his family.
04:50Witnesses on the bus swear he was there the entire time, sleeping peacefully in his seat.
04:55But when the bus reached Bennington, his suitcase, his unfolded map, and even his bus ticket
05:00were still on the seat, but Tedford was simply gone.
05:05The last time anyone saw him alive or not was at 4pm.
05:10Remember this time.
05:12This eerie disappearance wasn't the first or the last strange event in what locals call
05:17the Bennington Triangle.
05:20This area is famous for unexplained vanishings, sort of like the Bermuda Triangle on the ground.
05:26Between 1949 and 1950, multiple people disappeared under bizarre circumstances.
05:33Tedford went missing almost exactly three years after a young woman named Paula Weldon
05:38was last seen walking near the same area.
05:42It was also December 1st, around 4pm, when 18-year-old Paula stepped out of her dorm
05:48at Bennington College.
05:50She told her roommates she was heading for a hike on the long trail.
05:54A local man later said he gave Paula a ride and dropped her off a few miles from the trail.
06:02She was dressed in a bright red coat.
06:04Paula spoke with a few hikers before venturing into the wilderness alone, and then she was
06:09gone.
06:11The police and her devastated father were really trying hard to find her for four weeks
06:16but failed.
06:18Whispers soon spread that she had just run away.
06:21Paula's father was sure that she had a secret boyfriend, a man who either lured her away
06:26or took her life.
06:28But there was no evidence to prove this theory.
06:31The local tribe believed that Glastonbury Mountain, which lies in the heart of the Bennington
06:36Triangle, was cursed and full of restless spirits.
06:40So Bigfoot or some unknown force could have caught those missing people.
06:45Each of them disappeared in the late afternoon, between 3 and 4pm.
06:50Two of them were wearing red, and not a single body was ever found.
06:55Some believe it was one person taking lives in the area, but the targets were too different
07:00in age and gender to fit one pattern.
07:03Others say it all happened because the terrain here is pretty rough and the winds are strange
07:08and severe.
07:09But winds can't possibly take a person out of a moving bus, so the mystery lives on.
07:18On July 18, 2007, Barbara Bolick set out on a walk down her favorite trail in Montana's
07:24Bear Creek Overlook.
07:27She knew the trail like the back of her hand, and she had a backpack filled with food, water,
07:32and even something to protect herself from wild animals.
07:35She was hiking with her family guest, Jim Romaker.
07:39As he later remembered, the hike was going just fine when they stopped for a bite and
07:44met two young men.
07:46After parting ways with them, Barbara just walked 20 or 30 feet ahead of Jim on the trail.
07:52Jim paused for less than a minute, then he looked up and found no traces of Barbara.
07:57He scoured the trail, but he couldn't find the woman, her backpack, or even footprints
08:02leading away.
08:04He rushed to the nearest people he could find, construction workers at the trailhead.
08:08They hadn't seen her either.
08:11Rescue teams with dogs and helicopters investigated every possible hiding spot, but they found
08:16nothing, and dogs couldn't even pick up Barbara's scent.
08:21Now it wasn't clear if she had been there all day at all.
08:24If a wild animal had gone after her, there would be signs and sounds of struggle.
08:29She could have fallen into a crevice, but Barbara was afraid of heights and super careful
