Politicians for 20 years: We need more gun control right now.

Gun deaths in America: Still going up.
Transcript
00:00Today there was another terrible shooting.
00:02We can't tolerate this anymore. These tragedies must end.
00:05Today I'm announcing several initial steps my administration is taking
00:09to curb this epidemic of gun violence.
00:20We have all been sobered by what we have been through in these school shootings.
00:25This is too important an issue to be decided by strong-arm lobbying tactics in Washington.
00:32Gun violence is not a woman's issue.
00:35It is a family issue, a children's issue. It is an American issue.
00:41But I think it sometimes takes women to stand up and say enough is enough.
00:47Enough is enough.
00:49It is long past time for common sense gun legislation like this.
00:55In America today a teenager is more likely to die from a gunshot
00:59than from all natural causes of death combined.
01:02We need a national strategy to assure that every community
01:05is attacking gun violence with focus and intensity.
01:13My deepest condolences and prayers go out to the students,
01:16faculties, and the families of Virginia Tech campus
01:21who have been affected by this horrific crime.
01:23The nation is truly stunned by the loss of so many young lives.
01:30Clearly we need to do more to keep our people safe from gun violence.
01:35For my constituents in South Florida, gun control is a serious issue.
01:39Miami-Dade County has one of the highest rates of gun violence in the country.
01:42And I urge my friends across the aisle to stop putting American lives at risk.
01:47We gather here in memory of 20 beautiful children and six remarkable adults.
01:59Since I've been president this is the fourth time we have come together to
02:04comfort a grieving community torn apart by mass shooting.
02:07We can't tolerate this anymore.
02:12These tragedies must end.
02:13We said we will do everything that we can,
02:16everything in our power to reduce gun violence in this country.
02:21This epidemic of gun violence knows no boundaries, knows no limits of any kind.
02:31How many people have to die before we actually act?
02:36We need reasonable gun laws in this country that include background checks.
02:41It's ridiculous that we don't do it.
02:44I like taking the guns early.
02:49I don't understand why this hasn't happened for the last 20 years.
02:53Nothing's happened.
02:54I hope that in a bipartisan way we can come together,
02:59do what the American people want us to do, and that is to pass common sense gun safety legislation
03:08that is supported by the overwhelming majority of the American people.
03:14Today is also a day of action.
03:19We say enough is enough by finally bringing common sense bipartisan background check
03:25legislation to the floor of the House.
03:28The gun violence crisis, again, as I said, is an epidemic
03:32that requires the energy engagement of our entire nation.
03:35This bill is among the most common sense gun violence prevention reforms.
03:40Let's do this, Mr. Speaker, to save lives.
03:44Gun violence in this country is an epidemic.
03:46So I'm here to talk about two things.
03:49First, the steps we're going to take immediately.
03:53And second, the action that needs to be taken going forward to curb the epidemic of gun violence.
03:58Today, the first state in the nation is going to declare a disaster emergency on gun violence.
04:06I learned about a school shooting in Michigan.
04:09And the young man, he claimed his right against self-incrimination and handed over his pistol.
04:15That's all we know about it.
04:16This is a uniquely American problem that we need to address.
