She's inarguably one of the world's biggest stars, but Scarlett Johansson grew up in a humble home in New York. Now, she's nominated for a best actress Golden Globe for her heartbreaking performance in "Marriage Story." This is her life story so far.

00:00I grew up in New York City, I grew up with four siblings, my father barely made enough to get by.
00:12We moved every year and we finally settled in a housing development for lower middle income families.
00:19We went to public schools and depended on programs for school transport and lunches as did most of my friends.
00:57My dad was an architect and he always, you know, he would teach us to kind of look up at buildings
01:06and he was just really passionate about design and we would go with him to different design museums and all that stuff
01:14and I have really fond memories.
01:27When I was a kid, my mom would always, you know, various times when maybe I'd been rejected from something
01:32or it was a particularly hard moment, my mom would always ask me, she was like,
01:35are you sure you want to do this? You know, is it still fun?
01:39When it stops being fun, you know, then it's time to try something else.
01:43It's not always going to be fun, but I think if you have a passion for something and it stays with you
01:50and it burns bright, then you know that it's the right thing for you to pursue.
01:56♪
02:24I don't really think about that, the idea of celebrity.
02:28It just seems very new and can be quite strange sometimes.
02:34It's very new to me, so I haven't, I'm not jaded to that yet.
02:38But I think, you know, it's, there are the, you know, the positive parts and all, mostly positive
02:47and then some of the negative sides of it.
02:50♪
03:01My character is brave, she's vulnerable and she's a woman.
03:10♪
03:25I'm very proud to be able to be a working mom and, you know, I think it's really important for kids
03:33to see their parents satisfied by their job.
03:37♪
04:05March now! March now! March now! March now! March now! March now! March now!

04:16I feel that in the face of this current political climate, it is vital that we all make it our mission
04:23to get really, really personal.
04:26So yes, at 15 I had been to a gynecologist.
04:32in New York City and had visited a Planned Parenthood there.
04:37No judgment, no questions asked, Planned Parenthood provided a safe place where I could be treated
04:44with gentle guidance.
05:00I want to move forward.
05:03And for me, moving forward means my daughter growing up in a world where she doesn't have
05:09to be a victim of what has cruelly become the social norm.
05:13That she doesn't have to fit into the bindings of the female condition.
05:19Time's up on the female condition.
05:35When non-transgender actors play transgender parts, it continues to kind of spread this
05:40idea that transgender people don't exist, or that we're not real, or that our identities
05:44are just a costume that somebody can put on and take off at will.
06:15It's really interesting because when we were looking for a director, you start to see some
06:19of the systemic problems.
06:20Even looking for a female director who's had enough experience to be able, who's had the
06:24opportunity to have the experience to sit at the helm of something huge like this, choices
06:31are limited because of that, and it sucks.
06:44President Trump, I did not vote for you.
07:15That said, I respect that you are our president-elect, and I want to be able to support you.
07:21But first, I ask that you support me.
07:27Support my sister.
07:29Support my mother.
07:31Support my best friend, and all of our girlfriends.
07:34Support the men and women here today that are anxiously awaiting to see how your next
07:38moves may drastically affect their lives.
