Sahana Srinivasan is the first women of color to host a science show. But that's not enough for the 22-year old — she wants her Netflix show to mean more for young girls.

00:00I want to champion women and people of color and remind people of how important and talented they are.
00:11I'm the host of Brainchild.
00:19It's really cool to see a
00:22young woman of color hosting a science show. It's something that we haven't really seen as often.
00:26Often in the media like with
00:29Bill Nye and Beakman's World, etc. It's always, you know, a male host
00:33or, you know, a white male in a lab coat, you know, kind of thing.
00:37And that has been sort of the image that we see as scientist or that's what we think of, but that's so not the case.
00:52We're gonna expose this water to a vacuum, like the vacuum in space. You guys want to see what would happen?
00:58Awesome.
01:01Our vacuum pump is sucking the air out of the chamber, creating space-like conditions for the water. Do you think the water will freeze?
01:14Can you see what's happening? Instead of freezing, the water started boiling.
01:28I was like traveling from
01:30Austin to a different city and there's a little girl there and she recognized me at this, you know, random place and and just like
01:38the look on her face was... I could tell she really did look up to me as a role model in
01:44television and that's so cool. Like I'm so glad to have a fan base of that, you know, age
01:50because they're choosing the role models that they're gonna look up to for the rest of their life.
01:54I didn't realize how important it is to get women into STEM and to, you know,
01:59maintain their passion in STEM fields and and now I've assumed this responsibility and
02:05I'm definitely passionate about it.
02:25I hope that, you know, we get rid of these
02:30phrases like female comedian, female scientist.
02:34I hope that's just out of our lexicon and the first thing you think of when you see me is like, oh
02:39she's a science communicator and then
02:42whatever Indian and woman because I'm definitely not defined by my cultural background and my gender.
