During a House Commerce Committee hearing earlier this month, Rep. Kathy Castor (D-FL) warned about the issue of President Trump's possible education cuts.

00:00Well, thank you, Mr. Chairman.
00:04There's nothing like college sports.
00:06It's beloved in America.
00:07It builds cohesion among the community and alumni and students and great pride in your
00:14institution.
00:15You admire the skill of all the student-athletes and then the care and concern of the coaches
00:21and support staff.
00:22But it's also big business.
00:23I think right now college sports generates over $18 billion, all told.
00:29But it wasn't until that 2021 U.S. Supreme Court case where they granted student-athletes
00:37the rights to their own name, image, and likeness.
00:42So this is still new, and the courts, universities, athletes, and Congress were really trying
00:49to figure out how to navigate the landscape.
00:54So this hearing comes as we await another court decision on the multi-billion-dollar
01:00settlement between the NCAA, the Power Five Conferences, and the student-athletes.
01:05That settlement is going to resolve multiple lawsuits and better set the rules of the game
01:09going forward.
01:12Chair Barilarakis, I know that you care, and you've been talking to me and other members
01:16about trying to bring some guardrails, and I'm interested in working with you on that.
01:22But I just do not think we can ignore the bigger picture right now of what is happening
01:27in higher education with the illegal shutdown of federal funds, grant monies that flow to
01:34students and educators, the wrench thrown into research at higher ed institutions by
01:43Elon Musk at the direction of the president.
01:45I fear for the fallout for all students, and at the University of Florida, and at the
01:53University of South Florida, and FSU, and at UCF, research funding, and then the slashing
02:00of student aid, student financial aid.
02:04I think we're going to be in a quandary here, and I just couldn't let this moment pass without
02:12speaking up about this.
02:14NIL is very important, but there is a bigger picture here, and it goes right to the heart
02:19of the economic security of all students in all of our institutions of higher learning.
02:27That said, Ms. Cole, I think I am so impressed with your pathway in life.
02:34You were a student at one of the nation's top research universities, and yes, they're
02:37crying out about the NIH and scientific funding quandary, but let's put this in context.
02:47Can you discuss your research experience and that of you and your classmates that you were
02:54able to have at the collegiate level, and what that has done for your professional growth?
