00:00:00All Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle all the way.
00:00:16Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one horse open sleigh.
00:00:20Hey, jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way.
00:00:25Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one horse open sleigh.
00:00:29Dashing through the snow, in a one horse open sleigh.
00:00:34O'er the field we go, laughing all the way.
00:00:38Bells on bobtail ring, making spirits bright.
00:00:43What fun it is to laugh and sing, a swaying song tonight.
00:00:47Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way.
00:00:52Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one horse open sleigh.
00:00:56Hey, jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way.
00:01:01Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one horse open sleigh.
00:01:05Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one horse open sleigh.
00:01:10Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one horse open sleigh.
00:01:27Now that the Decades in the Making Tunnel and Reservoir Plan is officially online,
00:01:3212 million gallons of stormwater will be diverted from municipal sewers into the quarry.
00:01:37This should make homeowners accustomed to flooding very happy.
00:01:40Mary Romero, WZCH, Chicago.
00:01:44So?
00:01:46We need more footage of the tunnels.
00:01:48Tunnels are dark. You might not read.
00:01:51Okay, then cut in more drone footage above the reservoir.
00:01:54I just need the viewers to understand the scope of this project.
00:01:56Then limit your on-camera time.
00:01:58I don't understand you, Mary.
00:02:00Most people in this business would climb over their colleagues to get on air.
00:02:04Well, I don't like climbing, Phil. I like reporting.
00:02:07Yeah?
00:02:09You busy?
00:02:10Always.
00:02:11Get in here anyway.
00:02:14Okay, more drone footage.
00:02:16You got it, boss.
00:02:25Think fast.
00:02:28This better not be in lieu of my bonus.
00:02:31Come on, you remember the Missile Toads. Back in the 80s, they were all the rage.
00:02:34No, I think I missed that party.
00:02:36Well, it's their 40th anniversary, and you're going to do a great story about them.
00:02:39That was a good one. You almost got me.
00:02:42It's not a joke.
00:02:44What?
00:02:45It's not a joke.
00:02:46Why would we even consider doing something like that?
00:02:48Because the Missile Toads were made by Johnson Toys.
00:02:52Which is one of our biggest advertisers.
00:02:54Our biggest advertiser.
00:02:56So it's a shameless puff piece.
00:02:58Oh, no. A human interest story about a trusted partner.
00:03:01Why do I have to do it?
00:03:02Because you're the best I got.
00:03:03Don't try and butter me up, Hank.
00:03:05I'm not. This has to be a solid piece.
00:03:07I need a primetime player who can get me the goods. That's you.
00:03:10Okay, I just got a lead on the Transit Authority expansion story.
00:03:13And we're going to do that story, just not right now.
00:03:15Then when?
00:03:16When the bills are paid.
00:03:17Look, times are changing.
00:03:19Some people say we're lucky to have jobs at all.
00:03:22Don't do this to me.
00:03:23Think of it this way.
00:03:24If you get the story quick, you can be back before Christmas.
00:03:26What do you mean, back?
00:03:28Johnson Toys is located in Brunswick, Iowa.
00:03:32Okay.
00:03:33If I do this, I want complete creative control.
00:03:36Done.
00:03:37No, I'm not joking.
00:03:38I want to tell the story the way that I want to tell it with no input from the client.
00:03:41You have my word.
00:03:43Look at the bright side. No holiday traffic.
00:03:45Why not?
00:03:46Because last time I checked, Brunswick has a population of about a thousand.
00:03:52Now it's a thousand and one.
00:04:06Okay, look. I don't know what you are so upset about.
00:04:09Because I've spent my entire career fighting for stories that actually matter.
00:04:13To try and inspire change.
00:04:14And now I'm shilling for a toy company.
00:04:16It's not that bad.
00:04:17And soon enough you'll be telling them what stories to cover.
00:04:20You clearly don't know Hank.
00:04:22I know you're living the dream.
00:04:24Expense accounts.
00:04:25Flying first class.
00:04:26Limos.
00:04:27Girl, I am driving.
00:04:28Myself.
00:04:30Okay, the contractor should be here first thing in the morning and it should only take a couple of days.
00:04:35Okay, it's not a big deal.
00:04:37It is a big deal.
00:04:38I've been trying to get this bathroom redone for months and this is the only week they could do it.
00:04:41Mary, it's all good.
00:04:43I have loads of writing to catch up on.
00:04:45My publisher wants the next three chapters by the end of the year so it's just nice to have somewhere to focus.
00:04:50Okay, good.
00:04:51And Dylan's not going to miss you?
00:04:52Dylan is fine.
00:04:53He's fine.
00:04:54Besides, it's like a mini vacation from you.
00:04:56Where his family rolls in.
00:04:58Oh, right.
00:04:59Mary, be real with me though.
00:05:02Are you actually going to Brunswick, Iowa?
00:05:05Of course.
00:05:06Why would I lie about that?
00:05:07Oh, I don't know.
00:05:08Maybe to get out of a double date with us and Dylan's business partner?
00:05:11Oh, Todd.
00:05:14Girl, don't even pretend to be sorry.
00:05:17I gotta go.
00:05:18Saved by the bell.
00:05:20Just the best time.
00:05:21Thank you, Brianna.
00:05:23This is Mary Romero reporting for Christmas.
00:05:27Bye.
00:05:51You know what?
00:05:52I feel like the hits just keep on coming there, Hank.
00:05:54It's the best I can do, Mary.
00:05:55I love working with Crash.
00:05:56It's just, this isn't a job for a one-man crew.
00:05:58And plus, he's getting a little...
00:06:00Older?
00:06:01I was going to say crankier if that's possible.
00:06:03Look, Crash's experience allows him to pick up the slack.
00:06:06Plus, you should be grateful I'm sending him.
00:06:08A lot of stations are requiring producers to shoot their own footage nowadays.
00:06:12Well, you're just a prince among men there, Hank.
00:06:15Don't I know it.
00:06:16Drive safe.
00:06:26It's a magical feeling, it's time to believe it
00:06:31Better be ready, it's time to believe it
00:06:35Let's make December
00:06:37Let's make December
00:06:39To remember
00:06:41To remember
00:06:43It's a magical feeling, it's time to believe it
00:06:47Better be ready, it's here
00:06:50Let's make December
00:06:54To remember
00:06:59Christmas, the best time of the year
00:07:08Hank.
00:07:12Terrific.
00:07:24May I help you?
00:07:25Uh, yeah, just checking in, please.
00:07:27Mary Romero.
00:07:29You know who I am?
00:07:30Oh, honey, this is Brunswick.
00:07:32Everybody knows who you are and why you're here.
00:07:34I'd say I'm ready for my close-up,
00:07:36but you must have heard that joke a million times.
00:07:38Well, believe it or not, most of the people I interview
00:07:41don't want to be on camera.
00:07:42Especially if they're being held accountable.
00:07:44No.
00:07:45I actually have two rooms under your name, Miss Romero.
00:07:48Is that correct?
00:07:49Yes, my cameraman, he'll be joining me tomorrow.
00:07:51And we're looking forward to having him.
00:07:53Great, thanks.
00:07:54You know, I have to make a stop.
00:07:56Do you know Alton Johnson?
00:07:58Let me guess, everybody knows Alton Johnson.
00:08:00You catch on quick.
00:08:02Would you mind telling me where the factory is?
00:08:04Come back the way you came.
00:08:05Take a left at the light.
00:08:06It's about a mile down.
00:08:07You can't miss it.
00:08:08It's a, it's a factory.
00:08:10Right.
00:08:11We're really excited to have you here, Miss Romero.
00:08:14Please.
00:08:17Miss Romero.
00:08:18Please, just call me Mary.
00:08:20Mary.
00:08:21I'm Bernice.
00:08:22I do hope you enjoy our town.
00:08:24I'm sure I will.
00:08:48Eat your heart out, Diane Sawyer.
00:08:56You must be...
00:08:57Mary Romero!
00:08:59Wonderful to meet you.
00:09:01I can't tell you how excited I am about this.
00:09:03Yeah, yeah, I was told that you were one of our most important advertisers.
00:09:07I've gotten to know Hank Dean personally over the years.
00:09:10Good man.
00:09:11Yeah, and there they are.
00:09:13What do you think?
00:09:14I can't believe it.
00:09:15Me neither.
00:09:1640 years.
00:09:17But we can save that for my interview.
00:09:19Let's go have a quick chat in my office.
00:09:25I hope you'll excuse the mess.
00:09:28I never bought that business about a cluttered mind.
00:09:31Well, a cluttered mind has a lot of good stuff in it.
00:09:34These are your artifacts.
00:09:36Artifacts?
00:09:37Right.
00:09:38Family photos, old advertisements, product shots, stuff like that.
00:09:41As soon as you told me, I had my assistant start looking.
00:09:43I hope that's enough.
00:09:45Your archive.
00:09:46Yes, that is plenty.
00:09:49I'll have one of my delivery guys bring it over the end for you.
00:09:51Now, how shall we begin?
00:09:54I have so many ideas I'd love to share with you.
00:09:57Well, Mr. Johnson...
00:09:58Alton, please.
00:09:59It was good enough for my parents.
00:10:01Alton, look, I know that this isn't really a hard-hitting investigative piece,
00:10:05but I would like to approach it the same way that I do the rest of my stories,
00:10:08which means conducting my own research and building a rapport with the interviewees.
00:10:12So what you're telling me is to keep my mouth shut and stay in my own lane, is that it?
00:10:16I love your enthusiasm.
00:10:18You don't have to explain yourself.
00:10:19This isn't the first time I've been accused of being a bit too eager.
00:10:23The truth is I'm just very proud of what we build here.
00:10:27But you just tell us what you need.
00:10:28We're all at your disposal.
00:10:30Thank you so much.
00:10:32Sorry to bother you, Dad, but I need you over in shipping.
00:10:34Blake, Blake, I want you to meet Mary Romero.
00:10:36She's the television reporter.
00:10:37Yeah, I know who she is.
00:10:39Well, so much for flying under the radar.
00:10:41Seems like everyone already knows who I am around here.
00:10:44Well, your reputation precedes you.
00:10:48I'll be in the factory if you need me.
00:10:53He did not seem happy that I'm here.
00:10:55Oh, he'll come around eventually.
00:10:57It's just that my son wasn't exactly enthusiastic about this piece.
00:11:01In fact, to be honest, he thought it was a bad idea.
00:11:04Really? Why?
00:11:06Oh, he's worried the story will be about our success.
00:11:09Our commercial success.
00:11:11Blake's always wanted the company to be about more than that.
00:11:14But you know what? Our products make people happy,
00:11:16which is something you'll never hear me apologize for.
00:11:18And if our customers' happiness has made us a commercial success,
00:11:21then who's to fault that?
00:11:23Sounds reasonable to me.
00:11:24But most importantly, the mistletoes.
00:11:28Yes, I heard they were quite popular.
00:11:30The kids couldn't get enough of them.
00:11:32They just loved them.
00:11:33Most did, anyway.
00:11:37And we can't have another drive car expedited.
00:11:39Even shipped overnight.
00:11:41We can, but we'd still lose an entire 12-hour shift.
00:11:46Okay, let's move production to Woodbridge Plant and let's add a night shift.
00:11:51I'm sure the crew there will appreciate the overtime before the holidays.
00:11:55I'm on it.
00:11:56Appreciate you.
00:12:00Mr. Romero, what can I do for you?
00:12:02Were you serious about my reputation?
00:12:04Of course.
00:12:05Meaning what?
00:12:06Meaning I'm familiar with your work.
00:12:08Really? What specifically?
00:12:10Well, your piece on Midwest Chem.
00:12:12Dumping hazardous materials into the Mississippi.
00:12:14It was very illuminating.
00:12:16You saw that?
00:12:18The Mississippi River flows into the Iowa.
00:12:20Iowa flows into the Cedar, which flows right into town.
00:12:23I'm sure we're best known for Johnson Toys,
00:12:25but we're still a farming community at heart.
00:12:27Right.
00:12:28You know, Alton said you weren't too keen on talking to me.
00:12:31Well, I'm sure you can make a perfectly fine documentary without my involvement.
00:12:35Without the grandson of the founder and the one next in line to inherit the company?
00:12:38I don't think so.
00:12:39Sorry, but you're going to have to try.
00:12:41Why don't you want to be a part of the story?
00:12:43With all due respect, I can already see how it's going to turn out.
00:12:45Really? That's interesting, because I'm producing it,
00:12:48and I don't even know what the story is.
00:12:50Trust me.
00:12:52Indulge me.
00:12:54I don't know, maybe something like, um...
00:12:58Johnson Toys is the country's largest manufacturer of everything Christmas.
00:13:03From America's heartland, they produce literally thousands of items,
00:13:07from artificial trees to advent calendars.
00:13:10But what they're best known for are their lovable Christmas amphibians,
00:13:15the mistletoes.
00:13:17Well, you could have a future in showbiz.
00:13:19I think I'll leave that up to you.
00:13:21Was I close?
00:13:23Sure. Sure, that's what my boss wants.
00:13:26That's probably what your father wants.
00:13:28But I bet that there's a lot more to the story than that.
00:13:32Okay.
00:13:34Follow me.
00:13:46It's beautiful.
00:13:47My grandpa, Alton Johnson Sr.
00:13:50Your grandpa painted this?
00:13:52It's really good.
00:13:53Yeah, and it belongs in a museum, not hanging on some factory wall.
00:13:59So show the world.
00:14:01Participate in the story,
00:14:03and you can talk about your grandpa's work all you want.
00:14:06Think my dad will go for that?
00:14:08Trip down memory lane instead of the toys that made him famous?
00:14:11I think you've got it wrong how this works.
00:14:14Nobody has creative control over my stories.
00:14:17Over your advertiser-funded stories.
00:14:20The only reason I took this assignment
00:14:22was because I was promised creative control.
00:14:25You're pretty good at what you do.
00:14:27I'm very good.
00:14:29Well, then you'll find a way to tell the story without me.
00:14:32I'm going to get you to say yes.
00:14:34Nice meeting you, Ms. Romero.
00:14:37You too, Mr. Johnson.
00:14:51Hey.
00:14:53Do you want me for some hot chocolate?
00:14:55Um, no, thank you.
00:14:57I was just going to head out for some dinner.
00:14:59You know where you're going?
00:15:00No, no.
00:15:02I think I'm just going to walk into town and see what looks good.
00:15:04How was your visit to the factory?
00:15:06It was interesting.
00:15:08You get to meet Alton Johnson?
00:15:10I did.
00:15:11He is a fascinating man.
00:15:13He's an amazing man.
00:15:15They could rename this town Johnsonville tomorrow
00:15:17and no one would complain.
00:15:19Alton Johnson Sr. started the company in the 40s
00:15:22right after he returned from the war.
00:15:24Back then, Brunswick was nothing more than a spit of farmland.
00:15:27Was your family here then?
00:15:29You better believe it.
00:15:30Right here in this house.
00:15:32My great-grandfather built it himself.
00:15:34He was one of the first people to settle here.
00:15:36He knew Eli Brunswick, the town's namesake.
00:15:39And the Johnsons?
00:15:41Of course.
00:15:42When Junior took over the business in the 80s,
00:15:45the Christmas industry was exploding.
00:15:47But Alton?
00:15:49He understood what was happening.
00:15:51He turned a small family business
00:15:53into a multi-million dollar enterprise.
00:15:55Wow.
00:15:57So it was good timing and hard work.
00:15:59That's not all.
00:16:01Take a look.
00:16:03What's it say on the back?
00:16:07Made in America?
00:16:09Exactly.
00:16:10When Johnson Toys was expanding,
00:16:12Alton could have shipped so much of the manufacturing overseas.
00:16:14He could have used foreign parts, foreign labor.
00:16:17It would have saved him a fortune, but he didn't.
00:16:20He didn't because it also would have cost jobs and hurt the town.
00:16:24That's the kind of man he is.
00:16:26Wow.
00:16:28And Blake?
00:16:30What about him?
00:16:32He's a good kid, but he marches to his own beat.
00:16:34Yeah, he does seem a little different.
00:16:37Different in what way?
00:16:40Well, certainly his father.
00:16:43Anyway, thanks for the insight.
00:16:46Happy to help.
00:16:49Village Tavern.
00:16:51Excuse me?
00:16:52For dinner.
00:16:54The Village Tavern captures the spirit of this town
00:16:56and has some darn good food.
00:16:58Thanks.
00:17:10What can I get you, ma'am?
00:17:12Uh, what do you recommend?
00:17:14For you, I'd suggest a nice chardonnay,
00:17:17or maybe the mistletoe.
00:17:19I'm almost afraid to ask, what's a mistletoe?
00:17:22It's basically an appletini,
00:17:24but we named it after the mistletoes.
00:17:27We're doing it specially for you.
00:17:29Oh, thank you.
00:17:31You're welcome.
00:17:33You're welcome.
00:17:35It's an appletini, but we named it after the mistletoes.
00:17:39We're doing it special for the 40th anniversary.
00:17:42Actually, I'll have what Blake Johnson's having.
00:17:46You like rye, huh?
00:17:49Sure.
00:17:51Well, this brand is distilled right here in Iowa.
00:17:58On the rocks.
00:18:01That's Mr. Johnson's drink.
00:18:06Yeah, that'll warm you up.
00:18:10Thanks.
00:18:12I feel silly for thinking that.
00:18:15No, no, no.
00:18:17Oh, hi, Mary.
00:18:19Hi.
00:18:20Good to see you again.
00:18:21So we're on a first-name basis now?
00:18:23Let me introduce you to our VP of Marketing.
00:18:26Mary Romero. I'm Alexis Barnes.
00:18:28I'll be with you throughout the shoot
00:18:30to make sure that the messaging is on brand for Johnson Toys.
00:18:33Oh, well, I'm sure you'll be a great resource.
00:18:36We have an incredible story to tell.
00:18:38Happy to be able to share it with a larger audience.
00:18:42Me too.
00:18:44Well, I was just leaving.
00:18:47Good night.
00:18:49Mary, I'll see you tomorrow.
00:18:51Great.
00:18:55Elton didn't mention her to me.
00:18:57Sounds about right.
00:18:58And Dad's got a bit of a one-track mind.
00:19:03Um, did you want to stay?
00:19:06Join me?
00:19:08Yeah, sure.
00:19:11Thanks.
00:19:20Rye?
00:19:21You know, this particular brand
00:19:23was actually distilled right here in Iowa.
00:19:27Yeah.
00:19:28To keeping things local.
00:19:30Here, here.
00:19:32And one special for you.
00:19:36Let me know if I can get you anything else.
00:19:38Thank you, Roberta.
00:19:39You got it.
00:19:40So your father, he also likes to keep things local, don't he?
00:19:43You just can't help yourself, can you?
00:19:45I'm here for the story, not just for the meatloaf.
00:19:49Oh, no. No, no, no.
00:19:50This is not just any meatloaf.
00:19:52This is the best meatloaf west of the Mississippi.
00:19:55Really? That is a bold claim.
00:19:57It's a fact.
00:19:59Okay, I'll make you a deal.
00:20:02I will order that meatloaf if you'll answer some questions.
00:20:06You drive a hard bargain.
00:20:08All right, got yourself a deal.
00:20:10Great.
00:20:15Do you really like rye?
00:20:17I do not like it.
00:20:28So?
00:20:31All right, I concede.
00:20:34You win. It's amazing.
00:20:36Now you have to answer some questions.
00:20:38Yeah, deal's a deal.
00:20:39Okay.
00:20:40Fire away.
00:20:41Okay.
00:20:42Have you lived here all your life?
00:20:43Born in Britain.
00:20:44Would you leave?
00:20:45Nope.
00:20:46So you like it?
00:20:47It's home.
00:20:48That's not really an answer.
00:20:50And that really wasn't a question.
00:20:56Don't you ever get...
00:20:57What?
00:20:58Bored?
00:21:02Never.
00:21:06Come one, come all, let's drag the halls.
00:21:12The time is here to spray some cheer.
00:21:17And nog and pies and twinkling eyes
00:21:22are just some signs...
00:21:25So, what does Mayor Romero do
00:21:27when she's not speaking truth to power?
00:21:30Well, it's not a nine-to-five job.
00:21:32I go where the story is.
00:21:34Sounds exciting.
00:21:35It can be.
00:21:36Yeah, it used to be.
00:21:38You know, I didn't always want to be a reporter.
00:21:41Really?
00:21:42No.
00:21:43Growing up, I wanted to get into politics
00:21:46to make a difference.
00:21:48I mean, I was captain of the debate team,
00:21:51I was class president,
00:21:52I even majored in political science.
00:21:54And then I got a job at my college's news station
00:21:57and it just kind of took off from there.
00:21:59It seemed like another way to help people, but...
00:22:02It does, though, right?
00:22:04I don't know.
00:22:05You know, sometimes it just feels like nobody's listening.
00:22:09But, okay, enough about me.
00:22:11I'm not the story.
00:22:12Okay, what would you like to talk about?
00:22:14Alton Sr. and how he started the business.
00:22:17Well, well, he comes from a family of farmers,
00:22:21but my grandpa, he was always a talented artist.
00:22:25I mean, even as a little kid.
00:22:27Then after the war, he started painting.
00:22:29Professionally?
00:22:30Yeah, it was a hobby at first,
00:22:31but then people started buying those Christmas paintings,
00:22:34like the one that you saw, as holiday gifts.
00:22:37Wow, so he did well.
00:22:39Well, as well as to be expected
00:22:41in a small town in the middle of nowhere.
00:22:44So how did he go from Christmas paintings to a toy empire?
00:22:48My dad, he was born right before Christmas.
00:22:50My grandparents, they didn't have a lot of money back then.
00:22:53My grandpa, he couldn't bear the thought
00:22:55of not having a gift for his son.
00:22:57So that Christmas, he made the very first Johnson toy,
00:23:01and he gave it to his newborn son.
00:23:03Well, Alton Sr. sounds like an amazing man.
00:23:06Oh, you have no idea.
00:23:08And with the labor market,
00:23:09the advancements in manufacturing after the war,
00:23:12he saw his opportunity.
00:23:14Ten years later, that little company was on its way
00:23:18to becoming one of the top toy manufacturers in the country.
00:23:21Wow, so what happened when your dad took over?
00:23:24Oh, that's when it went into overdrive.
00:23:27So that's when the company expanded
00:23:29and you started selling Christmas decorations?
00:23:32Yeah, tinsel, toys, stockings, ornaments,
00:23:35whatever he could make and whatever people would buy.
00:23:38So no more paintings?
00:23:40No.
00:23:41Grandpa had to give that up as a business,
00:23:43but, I mean, he still paid until his dying day.
00:23:47He loved it.
00:23:49Come on.
00:23:57Okay.
00:23:59Here we are.
00:24:01Is this your house?
00:24:03No, I live right off Town Square
00:24:05in a home that's probably too big for me.
00:24:08Okay, so what is this place?
00:24:10This is my grandpa's first house.
00:24:13He built it with his own two hands.
00:24:15Wow.
00:24:16He was quite the craftsman.
00:24:18Yeah, but it was really beautiful when it was,
00:24:21you know, new.
00:24:23Yeah.
00:24:24Once my dad took over the company,
00:24:26he moved my grandparents into a much nicer house,
00:24:28and he left this to just sit here empty.
00:24:31My dad's very generous, just hardly sentimental.
00:24:34Well, someone should have stepped in
00:24:36because there's a lot of history here.
00:24:38Someone did.
00:24:40I'm restoring it.
00:24:42I'm going to turn it into a gallery
00:24:44for my grandpa's paintings.
00:24:46I love that.
00:24:47I already stored a vintage tractor
00:24:49I found just sitting here.
00:24:51And now it's just sitting in my front yard.
00:24:55Wow.
00:25:03What are you doing?
00:25:05I'm just going to take a few photos,
00:25:07and then I can send the cameraman over here,
00:25:09and he can shoot it properly.
00:25:11No, no, I'd prefer if you didn't do that.
00:25:13Why are you showing me this
00:25:15if you don't want it to be part of the story?
00:25:17I thought you'd appreciate it.
00:25:19Was I wrong?
00:25:21laughs
00:25:23No, no, not really.
00:25:27Okay.
00:25:29It would really help the story, though.
00:25:31Yeah, something tells me
00:25:33you know how to get a story without this in it.
00:25:41We don't see each other nearly enough
00:25:46But I love every moment with you
00:25:50I was thinking about the last time
00:25:52we talked and had a good laugh
00:25:55With a good class or two
00:25:58Who's got me when I'm with you
00:26:02Baby, no doubt
00:26:05I bet you give me ooh
00:26:08You're the reason this season's so pleasing
00:26:11Pleasing me
00:26:13There's nowhere I'd rather be
00:26:16With you on the phone
00:26:18I'm so lonely
00:26:20I'm moving, moving
00:26:22So soothing, yeah
00:26:24If you feel the way I do
00:26:27Baby, I want to celebrate
00:26:30I can't wait to celebrate
00:26:32Oh, oh, oh, oh, no
00:26:36Oh, hey Bree.
00:26:38Hey, girl.
00:26:39Just got back from dinner.
00:26:42With Crunch?
00:26:43What's his name?
00:26:44Crank?
00:26:45With Crash.
00:26:46No, he doesn't get here till tomorrow.
00:26:48So what's up?
00:26:50Nothing.
00:26:51Just needed a break.
00:26:53Dylan's working late.
00:26:55Oh, okay.
00:26:56I'm so glad I could be your backup.
00:26:58You know, everything was cool here.
00:26:59I mean, the main construction guy stopped by.
00:27:01He said he's on schedule to start tomorrow.
00:27:04How's Nowhere's, though?
00:27:05You mean, uh, Brunswick?
00:27:08It's fine.
00:27:09Any cute toy makers?
00:27:11Or farmers?
00:27:13There might be.
00:27:15What?
00:27:16Oh my God, tell me.
00:27:17Tell me!
00:27:19I mean, if you're into hot guys from the country.
00:27:22Oh, I'm totally into you being into hot guys from the country.
00:27:25So are you?
00:27:28I don't know.
00:27:29It's too soon to tell.
00:27:31It is never too early for love at first sight.
00:27:33What is he?
00:27:34Is he a toy maker?
00:27:35A farmer?
00:27:36No, they're farmers.
00:27:37He's a toy maker.
00:27:39Oh, yes.
00:27:40And he runs the factory while his family owns the company.
00:27:44OMG, I love this.
00:27:47I'll have to tell you everything tomorrow,
00:27:49because I have so much work to do.
00:27:51Living the dream.
00:27:52I demand a full report.
00:27:53I am so bored.
00:27:54I need some drama.
00:27:55Okay, well, I report the drama.
00:27:57I don't make it, so...
00:27:59I respect that.
00:28:00I'll see you.
00:28:01Okay, well, call me tomorrow.
00:28:03Sweet dreams of your Christmas toy maker.
00:28:06Okay, bye.
00:28:37What took you so long?
00:28:41I've been knocking for five minutes.
00:28:43I wasn't just sitting by the door waiting for you to get here.
00:28:46You didn't have to get all dressed up on account of me.
00:28:49I was up all night just going through all of that.
00:28:52An embarrassment of riches.
00:28:55Have fun.
00:28:56Yeah, well, that is going to make your job easier.
00:28:58The more material they give us, the less you have to shoot.
00:29:01I'll tell you what would make my job easier.
00:29:03A sound mixer and a production assistant.
00:29:06I'm getting too old to be dragging all my gear from here to there.
00:29:09Yeah, well, welcome to the new millennium, crush.
00:29:12Just go downstairs and check in.
00:29:15I'm going to take a shower.
00:29:16I'll meet you down there.
00:29:17We can get a bite to eat.
00:29:18Okay?
00:29:19Okay.
00:29:20Okay.
00:29:21But hurry up.
00:29:22I'm starving.
00:29:23Okay.
00:29:25Hello, dear.
00:29:26How'd you sleep?
00:29:27Good morning.
00:29:28I slept fine until this one woke me up.
00:29:30She thinks she's on vacation, sleeping the day away.
00:29:34I thought that we were going to go get food.
00:29:36Oh, it's my fault.
00:29:37When he mentioned he was hungry, I couldn't resist.
00:29:40I'm sorry.
00:29:41It's okay.
00:29:42It's okay.
00:29:43It's okay.
00:29:44It's okay.
00:29:45It's okay.
00:29:46It's okay.
00:29:47It's okay.
00:29:48It's okay.
00:29:49It's okay.
00:29:50It's okay.
00:29:51It's okay.
00:29:52It's okay.
00:29:53I couldn't resist.
00:29:54Uh-huh.
00:29:55You want some?
00:29:56No, thank you.
00:29:58I'll pass.
00:29:59The trick is to salt the eggs before you scramble them.
00:30:02Makes them creamier.
00:30:03Thanks for the tip.
00:30:04Do you want to...
00:30:05You go.
00:30:06She's making cinnamon rolls.
00:30:08From scratch.
00:30:10I'll meet you later.
00:30:12Okay.
00:30:13We have work to do.
00:30:14Mm-hmm.
00:30:15Don't worry.
00:30:16I'll make sure and point him in the right direction.
00:30:46Ugh.
00:30:47Awful, isn't it?
00:30:49Your word's not mine.
00:30:51I just sleep.
00:30:52Why does everyone in this town keep asking me that?
00:30:55I guess because when people come to visit,
00:30:57they always say it's the best sleep they ever had.
00:30:59No.
00:31:00No, not for me.
00:31:01I miss the sirens and the honking and the yelling.
00:31:05You know?
00:31:06The city.
00:31:07Hmm.
00:31:08Anyway, I was up really late prepping for your dad's interview, so...
00:31:11No, you don't have to worry about that.
00:31:13There's no one who likes to talk more about the company.
00:31:16Or himself.
00:31:17Well, maybe someone is actually embracing this story.
00:31:20Wow.
00:31:21If I had known any better,
00:31:22I'd say you're trying to guilt me into participating.
00:31:24Would it work?
00:31:26What do you think?
00:31:27I think I need a really good cup of coffee.
00:31:29Any suggestions?
00:31:31I happen to know what makes the meanest peppermint latte in town.
00:31:34I'm sorry, you just don't normally hear
00:31:37meanest and peppermint latte in the same sentence.
00:31:40Well, clearly you've never had this peppermint latte.
00:31:48You know, I am usually a black coffee kind of girl,
00:31:51but as far as peppermint lattes go, it's pretty mean.
00:31:54That makes me two for two.
00:31:56You should be a tour guide.
00:31:58I can't escape the holiday spirit in this town.
00:32:00No, you can't.
00:32:02Is that why you stay?
00:32:03Excuse me?
00:32:04In Brunswick, at your family's company?
00:32:06You could go somewhere else.
00:32:08You could do whatever you wanted.
00:32:10I don't know.
00:32:11I don't know.
00:32:12I don't know.
00:32:13I don't know.
00:32:14I don't know.
00:32:15You could go somewhere else.
00:32:16You could do whatever you wanted.
00:32:18I mean, do you really like working at the company?
00:32:21I may not agree with all my dad's decisions,
00:32:24but hundreds of workers depend on our company for their livelihood.
00:32:27That's just a responsibility I don't take lightly.
00:32:30Wow.
00:32:32That's refreshing.
00:32:33What is?
00:32:35Staying at a job for altruistic reasons.
00:32:38Oh, I think you've been covering politics a little too long.
00:32:42Probably.
00:32:45So, that's the only reason you stay?
00:32:48Just out of responsibility?
00:32:51Eh, you'll laugh.
00:32:53Believe it or not, but I have never been accused of laughing too easily.
00:32:56Right.
00:33:00I like Christmas.
00:33:02What?
00:33:03You said you wouldn't laugh.
00:33:05No, I'm not laughing because of that.
00:33:07It's just after everything that you said about mistletoes.
00:33:10Yeah, well, look, I may not be enamored with all the things we manufacture,
00:33:14but it doesn't mean that I don't understand their purpose.
00:33:17You know, we're a big part of people's Christmas traditions.
00:33:21You know, it is a shame that I can't put that in my piece.
00:33:26So, am I going to see you later this afternoon?
00:33:28Do you want to interview Alton?
00:33:30This time of year?
00:33:31No, sorry.
00:33:32Way too busy for me to step away.
00:33:35Maybe you'll change your mind.
00:33:36Someone's got to run the factory, Mary.
00:33:38You see, and those elves, they can't do it all by themselves.
00:33:40They can't.
00:33:41Would you go on the record with that?
00:33:43Because that is a scoop.
00:33:44You are relentless.
00:33:45You have no idea.
00:33:47I'm starting to get a sense of it.
00:33:51I've got to go.
00:33:53I have a one-man crew, and as awesome as he is, it's going to take a while to set up, so...
00:34:00I guess I'll see you around.
00:34:02See you.
00:34:09Hey, you miss Bernice's savory cinnamon rolls.
00:34:15Just like my mama used to bake.
00:34:17Crush, can we talk about that later?
00:34:19Did you do this?
00:34:21It was here when I came in.
00:34:23I assumed you did it.
00:34:24Me?
00:34:25How many years have we been working together?
00:34:27Have you ever seen me stage something this cheesy?
00:34:31That was me.
00:34:33Hey.
00:34:34Hey.
00:34:35And since the mistletoes are the company's most famous item, I thought it would be appropriate.
00:34:40I know that Elton would like it.
00:34:42Unless, of course, you have a better idea?
00:34:46You know what? It's fine.
00:34:51Oh, good. I see you two have met.
00:34:53I asked Lexi to oversee things on our end.
00:34:55Not only does she have media experience, but she knows which is my good side.
00:35:00Come on. Let's get your bike up.
00:35:02Thank you, Crush.
00:35:06Okay, Elton. Let's get you set up, and then we can go ahead and go over some of the ground rules.
00:35:10I am in your very capable hands.
00:35:13Do I look down and talk into that?
00:35:15No. You know what? Just forget that it's there, and then when we do start the interview, just don't look in the camera.
00:35:20Just stay looking at me.
00:35:22Okay?
00:35:25Okay, Elton. How do you feel?
00:35:28Great.
00:35:30We can see his microphone.
00:35:32Yeah, I'm aware.
00:35:34That's his primary mic, though, and sound quality is actually more important than visibility.
00:35:37Oh.
00:35:40So it's just like we talked about earlier. Just look right at me.
00:35:43And it's just like we're having a normal conversation.
00:35:45Camera speeds.
00:35:46Okay, great. So let's go ahead and just start at the beginning.
00:35:49Tell me about the founding of Johnson Toys.
00:35:52In 1946.
00:35:54I'm so sorry, Elton. I forgot to tell you.
00:35:56So you're going to want to rephrase the question in the answer, so it'll sound something like Johnson Toys was founded in 1946.
00:36:03Aye-aye, Captain.
00:36:05Stop. Stop. Cut.
00:36:08That mistletoe? It's out of focus.
00:36:11We can't even see what it is. It looks like a green blob.
00:36:15It's supposed to be out of focus.
00:36:17We want the viewers to focus on Elton.
00:36:19I don't know. I think we want to see the mistletoes.
00:36:22After all, they're what we're known for.
00:36:24Not green blobs.
00:36:26Yeah, I think so, too. It's all about the mistletoes.
00:36:30What do you think, Mary? How about we put it right here, like he's my right-hand man?
00:36:35You know what? If it makes you happy, Elton, that's fine. Let's go again.
00:36:40Speeding.
00:36:41Why do you say that?
00:36:43What?
00:36:44Speeding.
00:36:45It just confirms that we're recording.
00:36:47Why not say recording or filming?
00:36:50Elton, if we could just...
00:36:52Really from the old days when you actually used film.
00:36:55You needed to wait a few seconds for the film to reach the proper speed.
00:36:59So you'd say speeding.
00:37:01I love that. So you just do it out of tradition.
00:37:04Habit for me. Tradition for the new kids.
00:37:07And thank you for the history lesson, Crash.
00:37:10Still speeding.
00:37:11Shall we begin again?
00:37:13Okay. Elton, can you tell me a little bit about the importance of Johnson Toys being a family business?
00:37:19Actually, Lexi, I cannot have all these interruptions.
00:37:23So I'm going to ask you if you need to say something to me to wait until afterwards.
00:37:27And if you can't do that, I'm going to have to ask you to leave.
00:37:35Go ahead.
00:37:40You know how we came up with the mistletoes?
00:37:42Could we talk about that in a little bit?
00:37:45Right now I'd really like to hear about how it's a family business.
00:37:48Well, this is a story about family.
00:37:52Blake's mother had mistletoe up around the house.
00:37:56She loved Christmas.
00:37:58I do too, but she really loved it.
00:38:01Anyway, Blake would smash words together when he was two or three.
00:38:04And when he saw some mistletoe hanging one day, he shouted,
00:38:07Mistletoed!
00:38:10We just thought it was the funniest thing.
00:38:14The rest is history.
00:38:16We drew it up that night and the mistletoed was born.
00:38:20This is great.
00:38:26So what do you think?
00:38:28Honestly.
00:38:30He's a natural storyteller.
00:38:32Plus he's funny and likable.
00:38:34Got nothing to worry about.
00:38:35Yeah, but you're not the one that's going to have to sift through hours of mistletoe talk just to find the good stuff.
00:38:40Well, that's the job.
00:38:41Yeah.
00:38:42But what about Lexi? Can you believe her?
00:38:44You've dealt with plenty of PR flags before who were just as pushy.
00:38:48Yeah. The politics on this one is tricky.
00:38:51I mean, how are we supposed to maintain integrity like this?
00:38:54You just stick to your guns.
00:38:56Now, we've worked together a long time and there's one thing I've come to learn about Mary Romero
00:39:00is that she brings integrity into everything she does.
00:39:05You got this.
00:39:06Crush?
00:39:07You all softy?
00:39:09I just call it like I see it.
00:39:11Well, thank you.
00:39:13Oh.
00:39:14You want to screen some footage with me tonight?
00:39:17No can do.
00:39:19I have plans.
00:39:20You have plans.
00:39:21Here. In Brunswick, Iowa.
00:39:22Please.
00:39:23I make friends easily.
00:39:25You are the biggest misanthrope I know.
00:39:31What?
00:39:32Brenny's offered to cook me dinner.
00:39:34We got to talking about mushrooms.
00:39:37Years ago I did a piece on truffle hunters.
00:39:39And it turns out she forges her own mushrooms.
00:39:43What is going on?
00:39:45You have a date?
00:39:46And I have a PR person telling me how to direct my shoot.
00:39:49Is this the Twilight Zone?
00:39:51Nope.
00:39:52Just Christmas time.
00:39:54Season for miracles.
00:39:57And speaking of miracles, thank you.
00:40:04Mmm.
00:40:06A date.
00:40:07A date.
00:40:09Mmm.
00:40:10The fries are good.
00:40:11Try them.
00:40:14Mmm.
00:40:15Mm-hmm.
00:40:16Mmm.
00:40:37Mmm.
00:40:38Mmm.

00:40:46Mmm.
00:40:47Mmm.
00:40:48Mmm.
00:40:49Mmm.
00:40:50Mmm.
00:40:51Mmm.
00:40:52Mmm.
00:40:53Mmm.
00:40:54Mmm.
00:40:55Mmm.
00:40:56Mmm.
00:40:57Mmm.
00:40:58Mmm.
00:40:59Mmm.
00:41:00Mmm.
00:41:01Mmm.
00:41:02Mmm.
00:41:03Mmm.
00:41:05Mmm.
00:41:06Mmm.
00:41:07Mmm.

00:41:20Mmm.
00:41:21Mmm.
00:41:22Mmm.
00:41:23Mmm.
00:41:24Hey.
00:41:25No solicitors.
00:41:26What are you doing?
00:41:27Oh, I was taking a shower.
00:41:29One second.
00:41:30Be right down.
00:41:31OK.
00:41:32Hi.
00:41:33Hi.
00:41:34Um, how'd you know where I live?
00:41:39Um, right off the town square, vintage tractor in the front yard, I mean even in a farming
00:41:59town that's not really a dime a dozen, so it wasn't that hard.
00:42:04Come inside.
00:42:05It's freezing.
00:42:06Yeah.
00:42:07Okay.
00:42:08You always have a fire burning for all your guests?
00:42:13I was just about to settle in and do some work.
00:42:16Oh yeah?
00:42:17What can I do if you're married besides warm you up?
00:42:20I mean, with the fire.
00:42:23I know that.
00:42:25So, um, how did the interview go?
00:42:30I mean, don't you already know?
00:42:32What do you mean?
00:42:34You had Lexi there to spy on me.
00:42:37Uh, no, Lexi does not wait on my instructions on anything.
00:42:40Right, but you guys are, you know, like...
00:42:43What are you doing?
00:42:45I'm trying to say that you're together, right?
00:42:49Lexi grew up here, and so did I.
00:42:51We went to the same school together.
00:42:53Let's just say there weren't a lot of options, you know, for either of us.
00:42:58So you dated?
00:42:59A lifetime ago.
00:43:00Yeah, and now she works for you, which is not weird.
00:43:02It's not weird for me.
00:43:04I don't think it's weird for her.
00:43:06Is it weird for you?
00:43:07Why would it be weird for me?
00:43:11Is that why you came by, to chat about Lexi?
00:43:15No, you distracted me.
00:43:17Oh, I'm sorry.
00:43:18I think.
00:43:20Look, I came by to ask you to please reconsider.
00:43:23Oh, you really don't give up, do you?
00:43:26No, Blake, this story is going to happen whether you want it to or not.
00:43:30Don't you want your story to be told correctly?
00:43:33That's what Lexi keeps saying.
00:43:34You know, get in front of it, control the narrative.
00:43:38Exactly.
00:43:39Lexi and I agree.
00:43:40Just this once.
00:43:41You know what?
00:43:50Wow.
00:43:51Are these?
00:43:52Grandpa's, yeah.
00:43:53Really?
00:43:54Some of them just look a little more contemporary.
00:43:55You know, he was ahead of his time.
00:43:56Oh, sure.
00:43:57Wow.
00:43:58You know, Brunswick is a lot more than just Johnson Toys.
00:43:59I guess.
00:44:00I guess.
00:44:01I guess.
00:44:02I guess.
00:44:03I guess.
00:44:04I guess.
00:44:05I guess.
00:44:06I guess.
00:44:07I guess.
00:44:08I guess.
00:44:09I guess.
00:44:10I guess.
00:44:11I guess.
00:44:12I guess.
00:44:13I guess.
00:44:14I guess.
00:44:15I guess.
00:44:16I guess.
00:44:17I guess.
00:44:18I guess.
00:44:19I guess.
00:44:20I do know that, yeah.
00:44:21Unfortunately, not everyone does.
00:44:23This town is hurting.
00:44:25Well, they just need to look at your annual budget.
00:44:27I mean, you're receiving less and less money from the state each year.
00:44:30You're cutting back on the schools, the clinic.
00:44:32I do my homework.
00:44:35Well then you also know that we're having a hard time filling the empty seats on Town
00:44:39Council.
00:44:41Nobody wants to face the music.
00:44:43That's what I'm talking about.
00:44:44This piece could bring Brunswick exactly the type of exposure that you need.
00:44:48I couldn't.
00:44:58If I did this, I'd be trusting you to tell the real story about the company.
00:45:06Johnson told me it's more than just mistletoes.
00:45:09What we mean to this town and what this town means to my family.
00:45:14Something that my grandpa would be proud of.
00:45:18I wouldn't have it any other way.
00:45:23What?
00:45:24Told you I'd get you to say yes.
00:45:32It's my turn.
00:45:35No, it's not.
00:45:36It's mine.
00:45:37It's my turn.
00:45:38There you go.
00:45:39You're so bad.
00:45:40Kiki.
00:45:41What are you so happy about?
00:45:53Blake agreed to my interview.
00:45:54Really?
00:45:55Mm-hmm.
00:45:56I thought he was dead set against it.
00:45:58He was, but I feel like we're really connecting.
00:46:02I bet.
00:46:05How was dinner?
00:46:06So-so.
00:46:08He had two helpings.
00:46:09He would have had more, but I made him save room for dessert.
00:46:13I was hungry after a hard day's work.
00:46:16That's all.
00:46:17Had nothing to do with the meal.
00:46:19You guys, you are too much.
00:46:23What about you, dear?
00:46:24What?
00:46:25Can I fix you something?
00:46:26No, thank you.
00:46:27I have a lot of work to do.
00:46:28I'll just...
00:46:29Bye.
00:46:30Oh, yeah.
00:46:31Mm-hmm.
00:46:32It's time when we're nearing the end of the year.
00:46:33Time for the season of joy and such good cheer.
00:46:34Oh, yeah.
00:46:35Mm-hmm.
00:46:36Oh, yeah.
00:46:37Mm-hmm.
00:46:38Oh, yeah.
00:46:39Oh, yeah.
00:46:40Oh, yeah.
00:46:41Oh, yeah.
00:46:42Oh, yeah.

00:46:51Oh, yeah.
00:46:52Oh, yeah.
00:46:53Oh, yeah.
00:46:54Oh, yeah.
00:46:55Oh, yeah.
00:46:56Oh, yeah.
00:46:57Oh, yeah.
00:46:58Oh, yeah.
00:46:59Oh, yeah.
00:47:00Oh, yeah.
00:47:01Oh, yeah.
00:47:02Oh, yeah.
00:47:03Oh, yeah.
00:47:04Oh, yeah.
00:47:05Oh, yeah.
00:47:06Oh, yeah.
00:47:07Oh, yeah.
00:47:08Oh, yeah.
00:47:09Oh, yeah.
00:47:10Oh, yeah.
00:47:11Oh, yeah.
00:47:12Oh, yeah.
00:47:13Oh, yeah.
00:47:14Oh, yeah.
00:47:15Oh, yeah.
00:47:16Oh, yeah.
00:47:17Oh, yeah.
00:47:18Oh, yeah.
00:47:19Oh, yeah.
00:47:20Oh, yeah.
00:47:21Oh, yeah.
00:47:22Oh, yeah.
00:47:23Oh, yeah.
00:47:24Oh, yeah.
00:47:25Oh, yeah.
00:47:26Oh, yeah.
00:47:27Oh, yeah.
00:47:28Oh, yeah.
00:47:29Oh, yeah.
00:47:30Oh, yeah.
00:47:31Oh, yeah.
00:47:32Oh, yeah.
00:47:33Oh, yeah.
00:47:34Oh, yeah.
00:47:35Oh, yeah.
00:47:36Oh, yeah.
00:47:37Oh, yeah.
00:47:38Oh, yeah.
00:47:39Oh, yeah.
00:47:40Oh, yeah.
00:47:41Oh, yeah.
00:47:42Oh, yeah.
00:47:43Oh, yeah.
00:47:44Oh, yeah.
00:47:45Oh, yeah.
00:47:46Oh, yeah.
00:47:47Oh, yeah.
00:47:48Oh, yeah.
00:47:49Oh, yeah.
00:47:50Oh, yeah.
00:47:51Oh, yeah.
00:47:52Oh, yeah.
00:47:53Oh, yeah.
00:47:54Oh, yeah.
00:47:55Oh, yeah.
00:47:56Oh, yeah.
00:47:57Oh, yeah.
00:47:58Oh, yeah.
00:47:59Oh, yeah.
00:48:00Oh, yeah.
00:48:01Oh, yeah.
00:48:02Oh, yeah.
00:48:03Oh, yeah.

00:48:18Oh, yeah.
00:48:19Oh, yeah.
00:48:20Oh, yeah.
00:48:21Oh, yeah.
00:48:22Oh, yeah.
00:48:23Oh, yeah.
00:48:24Oh, yeah.
00:48:25Oh, yeah.
00:48:26Oh, yeah.
00:48:27Oh.
00:48:28I don't want Lexi there.
00:48:32She's the Vice President of Marketing.
00:48:34She's a distraction.
00:48:36And I do not need or want her looking over my shoulder all day.
00:48:41Okay.
00:48:43Okay?
00:48:44Okay.
00:48:45I'll tell her to stand down.
00:48:51So what happens after? You filmed everything you need?
00:48:56Um, go back to the city and put it all together?
00:49:02That's it.
00:49:04That's it? That's a lot.
00:49:08No, I mean, that's it for Brunswick?
00:49:15Yeah, it is.
00:49:18That's too bad.
00:49:21Yeah.
00:49:27You know, I did, I did enjoy it here a lot more than I thought I would.
00:49:32Yeah, no, me too. I mean, you know, have a new year.
00:49:37I know.
00:49:40And I won't say it wasn't great, getting to know you.
00:49:47You have a life and a job back in Chicago.
00:49:52And you have an entire family legacy to continue.
00:49:56Yeah, yeah.
00:50:00Another time, another place.
00:50:16Hello?
00:50:28You were asleep?
00:50:30Yeah, I guess I needed it.
00:50:32Sounds like the country life agrees with you.
00:50:34It was just a late night.
00:50:36See, I love that. I love that for you.
00:50:38Okay, now tell me everything. How's the toy farmer?
00:50:41Blake.
00:50:43He has a name?
00:50:44Blake.
00:50:45Yes.
00:50:46Yeah, he's a really great guy.
00:50:50But I just think it's bad timing.
00:50:53Oh, who cares about timing? I mean, can't he leave Iowa?
00:50:57No, girl, he's not leaving. He has roots here.
00:51:01Would you, gasp, move there?
00:51:04No. No.
00:51:06I have spent way too many years working my way up that network ladder.
00:51:09It would be so stupid to leave now.
00:51:11And this story is just so much better than I ever could have imagined.
00:51:15I think I'm just getting caught up in it. I think that's all it is.
00:51:19He's part of the story, you know?
00:51:21But Mary, what about your story?
00:51:25It's just complicated.
00:51:27Is it?
00:51:29How's my bathroom?
00:51:31It's fine.
00:51:33I think the guys left early for lunch because I was talking too much.
00:51:36Oh, I'm sure that's not happening.
00:51:38Look, I'm coming home tomorrow, so just call me if anything explodes, okay?
00:51:43You'll be the second person I call. Bye!
00:51:45Bye.
00:51:51Okay, I gotta get up.
00:52:03Don't do that.
00:52:09Um, you know what?
00:52:11I interviewed Alton behind his desk.
00:52:13I don't want to do the same thing with you.
00:52:15It's too similar, so I think we'll put you here.
00:52:19Okay. Whatever you say.
00:52:22Sorry, Mary. Give me a minute.
00:52:24The colors on the monitor are off.
00:52:26Plus, I still need to mic him.
00:52:28Uh, okay. You know what? I can mic him.
00:52:30Yeah?
00:52:32Yeah. Thanks.
00:52:34Could you stand up, please?
00:52:38And I'm going to go ahead and just slide this down your shirt.
00:52:44You can grab it on the bottom.
00:52:55And you can just put that in your pocket.
00:52:59And you can just put that in your pocket.
00:53:05And have a seat.
00:53:11All right.
00:53:13Speeding.
00:53:14Okay, so just remember what we talked about.
00:53:16Look at me. Don't look at the camera.
00:53:18No one-word answers.
00:53:20And try and rephrase the question in your answer.
00:53:23Rephrase. Right. Right. Got it.
00:53:25So, why don't we start talking a little bit about craftsmanship?
00:53:29Why is craftsmanship so important to Johnson Toys?
00:53:33Craftsmanship is important to Johnson Toys because...
00:53:39Craftsmanship is important to Johnson Toys because...
00:53:42Well...
00:53:46Look, I'm sorry.
00:53:47Could we start with something a little easier?
00:53:49Like, what do we manufacture?
00:53:51Things like that.
00:53:53We already got that with Alton.
00:53:55But it's okay. Just relax.
00:53:57I'm trying.
00:53:59Pretend that we're at dinner.
00:54:02Just like the other night.
00:54:04Speak from your heart.
00:54:06And just tell me.
00:54:09Why is craftsmanship so important?
00:54:16My grandfather, the founder of Johnson Toys,
00:54:19he always said,
00:54:21anything worth doing is worth doing right.
00:54:26I know. I know.
00:54:27Millions of people say the same thing,
00:54:29but I don't know how many of them actually live it.
00:54:32You know?
00:54:34Because to him, craftsmanship wasn't just about doing your best work.
00:54:38It was about allowing other people to see the greatness of themselves.
00:54:45That was really great, Blake.
00:54:48So...
00:54:49Johnson Toys could manufacture whatever it chooses.
00:54:53Why focus on Christmas items?
00:54:55Alright, don't...
00:54:57Please don't take this out of context, but...
00:55:00You know what drives me crazy?
00:55:02Is that for so many people, it's all about the money.
00:55:06That's what Christmas is about.
00:55:08The money.
00:55:11Not for me.
00:55:14What's it about for you?
00:55:17They say Christmas is the happiest day of the year.
00:55:20Well, we'd like to bring that spirit to the other 364 days.
00:55:28Great.
00:55:32Ah, there you are.
00:55:34I was looking all over for you.
00:55:35Hey.
00:55:36Everything okay?
00:55:38Yeah.
00:55:41Are you not happy with the interview?
00:55:43Because Crash said I was pretty good.
00:55:47Oh wow, he was just being nice, wasn't he?
00:55:50Crash wouldn't do that.
00:55:52Okay, then...
00:55:53What is it?
00:55:54You were amazing.
00:55:57Well, I guess I was just lucky that I had someone that could put me at ease.
00:56:07Just, um...
00:56:08Remember our deal.
00:56:10Alright?
00:56:11The real story.
00:56:13Real story.
00:56:17Look, I hate to throw you out, but I got some work to do.
00:56:22Um, maybe if you're free later we could get some dinner.
00:56:27Just to say goodbye.
00:56:29I think I can fit you in.
00:56:32Okay.
00:56:33Sure.
00:56:34See ya.
00:56:43You sure you don't want to ride back to the inn?
00:56:45Nah, I feel like walking.
00:56:47You know, I had my doubts about all this, just like you did.
00:56:51But the truth is, it's turning out to be a nice piece.
00:56:54Get out of here.
00:56:56See ya.
00:56:57See ya.
00:57:15A smile with enough sunshine
00:57:18To bring a snowman to his knees
00:57:24There's something in the air
00:57:27That makes me wanna make
00:57:30More memories with you
00:57:34Let's make some more memories
00:57:36Mary!
00:57:37How long have you been there?
00:57:39Not long. I'm just on my way out.
00:57:41Oh, can I fix you something?
00:57:42No, no, no. Thank you. I have plans.
00:57:44Plans? Here? In Brunswick, Iowa?
00:57:47I make friends easily.
00:57:49Touche.
00:57:51Mm-hmm.
00:57:52Can I get you guys anything while I'm out?
00:57:54We're fine, dear. You have fun.
00:57:56Okay.
00:57:57We don't lock doors here, so come back whenever.
00:57:59Thanks.
00:58:00Good night.
00:58:14Hey.
00:58:15Hi.
00:58:20You look great.
00:58:21So do you.
00:58:23Oh, hey, Blake. Good. We're slammed.
00:58:25Give me a minute?
00:58:26It's a good time. We're in no rush.
00:58:28You want something to drink while you wait?
00:58:29I'm good.
00:58:30Mary? Ride?
00:58:31No, thanks.
00:58:35You know, I'm really starting to like how people know my name here.
00:58:38Oh, you're gonna miss our small-town hospitality.
00:58:41I am.
00:58:42Speaking of which, how's Bernice treating you?
00:58:45She's so sweet. I want her to adopt me.
00:58:47Careful what you wish for.
00:58:49Oh, looks like we're ready.
00:58:52So my next piece is on the transit authority and how the bidding process is not transparent to the public.
00:58:57Sure.
00:58:58This makes for potentially criminal behavior, and even if it doesn't, it foments distrust of the government.
00:59:02Wow. That sounds like quite the expose.
00:59:05It's important for people to see.
00:59:07Making a difference, right?
00:59:08That's right.
00:59:10So, the interview must have gone well if it turned into a date.
00:59:14I'm kidding. Seriously, though. How'd it go?
00:59:18It was fine.
00:59:20I recall you using the words you and were and amazing.
00:59:25It was a very good interview. I got exactly what I needed.
00:59:30Oh, I'm thrilled to hear it.
00:59:32What else do you need for your story, Mary?
00:59:35Blake was the last holdout, so as of a few hours ago, we're wrapped.
00:59:41Heading back to Chicago then, huh?
00:59:44Yeah, I guess so.
00:59:46Well, we're all going to be so sad to see you go.
00:59:49Thanks.
00:59:51Well, I don't want to intrude, but I just wanted to make sure everything went great.
00:59:56Glad to hear it did.
00:59:58Have a good night.
01:00:00So, where were we?
01:00:04Making a difference, yeah.
01:00:06Yeah.
01:00:09Sorry, one second.
01:00:13It's my foreman. I need to take this.
01:00:15Please, yeah.
01:00:17Yep.
01:00:20No, I understand.
01:00:23See you soon.
01:00:26The assembly line is down again.
01:00:29What's that mean?
01:00:30It means I gotta go.
01:00:31Oh.
01:00:32I'm sorry.
01:00:33It's too bad.
01:00:34Yeah.
01:00:35I know it sounds dramatic, but Christmas is on the line.
01:00:38Santa and those elves.
01:00:40Can't do it all themselves.
01:00:42Yeah.
01:00:47Well, if this is goodbye, it was so nice to meet you.
01:00:54And thank you for everything.
01:00:57No, yeah, it's been great.
01:01:02Yeah.
01:01:04Goodbye, Mr. Johnson.
01:01:06Goodbye, Ms. Romero.
01:01:15Bye.
01:01:16Bye.
01:01:25Hey, I don't think I'm-
01:01:26Oh, did Blake have to leave?
01:01:28Yeah, something went wrong at the factory, so...
01:01:32He tried, you know.
01:01:35I'm sorry.
01:01:36In the city.
01:01:37He tried to sell his paintings in Chicago, even opened a little store.
01:01:40They just never sold.
01:01:42His grandfather's paintings.
01:01:45Is that what he told you?
01:01:53Why are you telling me this?
01:01:55Maybe to save you some heartache.
01:01:57I can take care of myself.
01:01:58Please, Mary.
01:02:00Blake is amazing, and we all love him.
01:02:02But if he can't face the past or his own failures, how's he ever gonna grow?
01:02:07Be the leader that Johnson Toys needs.
01:02:10Maybe he needs some encouragement.
01:02:13Or the right support.
01:02:16Yeah, maybe.
01:02:18Guess we'll never know.
01:02:22Well, safe travels.
01:02:26Thanks.
01:02:52This is ridiculous.
01:03:23Hi.
01:03:26Hi.
01:03:29Everything okay there?
01:03:31No.
01:03:33I don't know, I can't sleep.
01:03:35Yeah, I don't know.
01:03:36That makes two of us.
01:03:40I have one more question I need to ask you.
01:03:44Okay.
01:03:46Come inside.
01:03:50Would you like something to drink?
01:03:52Coffee?
01:03:54If you have it.
01:04:03Here you go.
01:04:04Thanks.
01:04:05So, what's your question?
01:04:08Were you gonna tell me?
01:04:09Tell you what?
01:04:10That all these are your paintings.
01:04:15Not all of them.
01:04:16A few are my grandpa's.
01:04:19They're really similar.
01:04:21Yeah, well, I adopted his style and I had a little flair of my own.
01:04:25It's just too bad I didn't inherit his talent.
01:04:28They have a ton of talent.
01:04:30Did you ever sell any?
01:04:32A few.
01:04:33Here and there, but, you know, not enough to ever...
01:04:36To keep a gallery open in Chicago?
01:04:39Yeah, I know.
01:04:41Let me guess.
01:04:42Luxy.
01:04:44Is it true?
01:04:45Is it true that I once opened a gallery in Chicago and that I don't own it anymore?
01:04:49Yeah, it's true.
01:04:52What happened?
01:04:53You're leaving tomorrow.
01:04:54What does it matter?
01:04:55You lied.
01:04:56I omitted.
01:04:57Same thing.
01:04:59I answered the questions you asked me.
01:05:02I participated in your piece to the best of my abilities.
01:05:05I see.
01:05:08Listen, I'm exhausted.
01:05:10We work farm hours here, so I gotta be up soon.
01:05:14I know.
01:05:15Absolutely.
01:05:17I better get going.
01:05:21Look forward to seeing the story.
01:05:22Mm-hmm.
01:05:33Good morning, Mary.
01:05:35How'd you sleep?
01:05:36Okay.
01:05:37You know, it wasn't the room's fault, though.
01:05:41You're up early.
01:05:43Yeah, I thought I'd get a head start on the day.
01:05:46You heading home?
01:05:47I am.
01:05:48Are you?
01:05:50You know, I've been in this business a long time.
01:05:53Some might say too long.
01:05:55No.
01:05:56So I thought I'd stay here for a while.
01:05:59On the house?
01:06:01Oh.
01:06:02Well, Bernice, you need to watch out because this one here is a shameless charmer.
01:06:06I got that feeling.
01:06:08She'll probably get tired of me before Christmas.
01:06:11From what Crash tells me, this place and the folks here have a tendency to grow on people.
01:06:16People you least expect.
01:06:19Yeah.
01:06:20Did you tell Hank?
01:06:22Not yet.
01:06:23I'll wait until after the holidays.
01:06:25Okay.
01:06:26Okay.
01:06:27Great.
01:06:28Well, this is a lot for me right now, so, Bernice, if I could just settle up, I'll get on my way.
01:06:33You won't be a stranger, will you?
01:06:35You know, I have enjoyed it here, but I honestly don't know how often I'll be back.
01:06:40Except for probably the 50th anniversary of the mistletoes.
01:06:44Well, good luck with the story.
01:06:47Everyone is so excited to see it.
01:06:51Thank you for everything.
01:06:52You're welcome.
01:06:53Crash?
01:07:06Cheers.
01:07:07Cheers.
01:07:08It is about time we made this happen.
01:07:11Finally.
01:07:12I know.
01:07:13I'm so sorry.
01:07:14It's all my fault.
01:07:15I just had a really busy year.
01:07:17Mary is the busiest, the coolest, and the prettiest person I know.
01:07:22Okay.
01:07:23Yeah, you're a reporter, right?
01:07:24I am, yes.
01:07:25I actually just finished a story about this company in Iowa that I'm working on.
01:07:29And it's a great story.
01:07:31I am, yes.
01:07:32I actually just finished a story about this company in Iowa that manufactures Christmas items.
01:07:36But the real story is actually about the town more than it is the company.
01:07:41Cool.
01:07:42Like a charity piece.
01:07:43No.
01:07:44No.
01:07:45Not a charity piece.
01:07:46Right.
01:07:47So, I'm not sure if Brianna told you, but Dylan and I are in real estate.
01:07:50Yeah, she mentioned that.
01:07:52We're working on a huge project right now.
01:07:54It could be a game changer.
01:07:55Great.
01:07:56And you know, if those investors really come through, we could bid on that riverfront property as early as next quarter.
01:08:00Properties.
01:08:01Remember, we don't want to limit this to the riverfront.
01:08:02Absolutely.
01:08:03Properties.
01:08:04I'm not the one you need to convince.
01:08:05I still think we should do commercial...
01:08:16Hey, what's up?
01:08:17Oh, thanks for swinging by.
01:08:19Coffee?
01:08:20No, thanks.
01:08:21We gotta talk.
01:08:22You know the Transit Authority bidding scheme story?
01:08:24It's really starting to heat up.
01:08:25I want to talk Brunswick.
01:08:26Johnson Toys.
01:08:27I watched your cut.
01:08:28I had Phil show me.
01:08:30It's not done yet.
01:08:31I think we should just wait until I fine-tune it.
01:08:33Come on, Mary.
01:08:34Don't spin me.
01:08:35I've been doing this a long time.
01:08:36I know how to watch a rough cut, and I can see where you're taking the story.
01:08:39But that is the real story, okay?
01:08:41It's an artist who sacrifices his dream to save a small town and then becomes one of the biggest employers in the state.
01:08:47I'm taking over.
01:08:48I had Phil start a new cut.
01:08:49Hank, you promised me creative control.
01:08:51Look, I like what you did with the Christmas paintings and the old man building up the company so the son has something to inherit.
01:08:58But you missed the brief.
01:08:59You were supposed to be there for the mistletoes.
01:09:02This story is actually very important to me, and I made promises to the people who participated.
01:09:07What do you want me to say?
01:09:08I've got bosses, too.
01:09:10And right now they're more concerned with the bottom line.
01:09:13I gave them my word.
01:09:17It's not going to be that bad.
01:09:18I know what I'm doing, okay?
01:09:20The piece airs in two days.
01:09:21So why don't you just go home and have yourself a great Christmas.
01:09:28Okay.
01:09:35Thanks for coming over.
01:09:36Of course.
01:09:37Are you excited?
01:09:39We'll see.
01:09:40I'm so proud of you.
01:09:48Chances are you've got something made by Johnson Toys among your holiday decorations or under the tree.
01:09:54And if you're of a certain age, you probably remember this festive frog whose 40th anniversary is this year.
01:09:59It's all about the mistletoes.
01:10:01He's my right-hand man.
01:10:04With annual sales in the hundreds of millions, Johnson Toys of Brunswick, Iowa is now the country's most successful purveyor of Christmas trinkets.
01:10:13Thanks to some little green helpers that had an adorable start.
01:10:16All because of Alton's son, Blake.
01:10:18Blake would smash words together when he was two or three.
01:10:21And when he saw some mistletoe hanging one day, he shouted, mistletoed.
01:10:27We just thought it was the funniest thing.
01:10:32The rest is history.
01:10:34Even though Brunswick is a small town, it has cashed in big on the mistletoes.
01:10:38We created a special drink, the mistletoed.
01:10:41It's been really popular.
01:10:42We're actually keeping it on the menu.
01:10:44And what about Blake Johnson, the little boy who inspired it all?
01:10:47Does he still love Christmas?
01:10:49He now serves as Johnson Toys' Vice President of Operations and is focused on one thing.
01:10:54It is all about the money.
01:10:56That's what Christmas is about.
01:10:59The money.
01:11:00Well, when you're as successful as Johnson Toys, Christmas would be about money for me too.
01:11:05Happy 40th, mistletoes, and may you hop along for decades to come.
01:11:10Nicely done, Mary.
01:11:13What?
01:11:14I thought it was great.
01:11:16It was great, right?
01:11:18That was terrible.
01:11:20It wasn't that bad, Brianna.
01:11:22No, it wasn't bad at all.
01:11:23I think this is exactly the kind of stuff you should be doing.
01:11:26I mean, this is what people want to see, you know, especially on the holidays.
01:11:29That is not why I got into this.
01:11:34I, uh, I'll get you out.
01:11:36No problem.
01:11:40He is never going to forgive me.
01:11:43I'm sorry.
01:11:46We'll get out of your hair.
01:11:49Thanks.
01:12:17Yes, yes.
01:12:21Well, that's Christmas for you.
01:12:24Okay, will do.
01:12:28Thanks, Jim.
01:12:29Mary!
01:12:30It's so nice to see you again.
01:12:32You too.
01:12:33Um, is Blake...
01:12:34I loved it.
01:12:35What?
01:12:36The piece.
01:12:37I already had my tech people pull it off the air and stream it on our site or stream it off the air, whatever they do.
01:12:41I can't thank you enough.
01:12:43It was so positive, so upbeat.
01:12:45It didn't take cheap shots.
01:12:47I'm making it mandatory viewing for all our employees.
01:12:49Wow.
01:12:50Well, I'm glad you liked it.
01:12:52Normally for us, Christmas is done by December 15th, but with this story, the orders are flying in.
01:12:57Will you excuse me just a second?
01:12:59Sure.
01:13:00Heya.
01:13:01Um, yeah.
01:13:02I know, I know.
01:13:04We're trying.
01:13:06We've got everything in capacity.
01:13:08Can we talk?
01:13:11Look, I didn't expect you to be excited to see me, but I did come all the way here.
01:13:14The least you could do is let me explain.
01:13:16Explain what?
01:13:18I used me?
01:13:20I used everyone in that piece to tell the story you wanted?
01:13:22It wasn't like that.
01:13:24I made our version, the real story, and the station, they took it over.
01:13:28The thing is, I'm not even mad at you.
01:13:31I'm mad at myself.
01:13:33for trusting you.
01:13:35Caring about you.
01:13:37I care about you too.
01:13:39Well, clearly we value different things then.
01:13:43That piece, that made us look so shallow.
01:13:46That wasn't about my grandpa's legacy.
01:13:48No, I know that.
01:13:50But hey, my dad loves it.
01:13:52I'm sure he's going to spend a fortune on advertising before he retires.
01:13:55He's retiring?
01:13:57Yeah.
01:13:59I'm sure he's going to spend a fortune on advertising before he retires.
01:14:02He's retiring?
01:14:04This is his last Christmas.
01:14:06He's going to announce it at the next board meeting.
01:14:08So are you going to take over the company?
01:14:11Are you asking because you actually want to know?
01:14:14Or are you still working?
01:14:16Because I want to know.
01:14:20I hope you have a great Christmas.
01:14:42Hey Tim, would you mind putting this up on the bulletin board?
01:14:45I'd love that. Thank you so much.
01:14:47Hey Mary.
01:14:49Actually, I'm glad I saw you here.
01:14:51Oh yeah?
01:14:53Let me guess, you're thrilled about the story too?
01:14:55Oh, yeah.
01:14:57I was a little cranky, but got the job done.
01:14:59But that's not why I'm glad I saw you.
01:15:03I'm competitive.
01:15:05I can be competitive.
01:15:07People have told me that.
01:15:09And I think I might have gotten a little carried away the other night.
01:15:13I hope I didn't put you off towards Blake.
01:15:16I was just angry about being excluded from the interview.
01:15:19Oh, it's fine.
01:15:21It doesn't matter anyway.
01:15:23You were put in an impossible situation.
01:15:25It happens to me all the time.
01:15:27Why do you think I was so difficult to deal with?
01:15:30You weren't difficult.
01:15:32You were just doing your job.
01:15:34And you were just doing yours.
01:15:36Yeah.
01:15:39So, what are you going to do now that Alton's leaving?
01:15:42Blake told me.
01:15:44Figure it out.
01:15:46We always do.
01:15:48And you will too, right?
01:15:50Yeah. Yeah, of course.
01:15:53What are these?
01:15:55Oh, my side hustle.
01:15:57I'm helping a friend on the town council with her re-election campaign.
01:16:00Should be a walk in the park, though.
01:16:02There are more vacancies than candidates this time.
01:16:05Here, let me see.
01:16:07Huh.
01:16:09Well, good luck.
01:16:11Thanks, Mary.
01:16:13Merry Christmas.
01:16:15Hey.
01:16:17Mary.
01:16:19No.
01:16:20Christmas.
01:16:21Yes.
01:16:23Yes.
01:16:25You're welcome.
01:16:26Merry Christmas.
01:16:28Hmm.
01:16:38Mary, what are you doing back here?
01:16:42I just need some cheering up.
01:16:45Is Crash still here?
01:16:47He's down in the basement fixing the boiler.
01:16:49I can't sit still.
01:16:51I'm not going to stay for too long.
01:16:53I just wanted to come by and say hello.
01:16:55Did you check the weather?
01:16:57No. Why?
01:16:59Because you're not going anywhere.
01:17:01The storm is supposed to last until Christmas.
01:17:03You'll be stuck on the highway all night.
01:17:06Please tell me you have a room.
01:17:08You can have your room.
01:17:10Thanks.
01:17:12I wasn't expecting fireworks, but I thought you'd be happier.
01:17:16It's not that. It's...
01:17:19Blake?
01:17:21Did you see the Johnson Toy Story?
01:17:23Everybody saw it.
01:17:26Not my best work.
01:17:28The shots were nice.
01:17:30You got the whole town in it.
01:17:32And everyone looked good on camera.
01:17:34Oh, you didn't like it either.
01:17:37It's okay.
01:17:38But you know what?
01:17:40This place...
01:17:43My time here...
01:17:45It changed me.
01:17:47And I went home. It doesn't feel like home anymore.
01:17:50But I messed up, and now...
01:17:52I don't know if there's a place for me here either.
01:17:55It'll be okay, dear.
01:17:57You just need a good night's sleep.
01:17:59Yes, maybe.
01:18:01Thanks, Bernice.
01:18:03Let's go inside.
01:18:05Okay.
01:18:09You're welcome.
01:18:11Lights on the rooftop
01:18:14Candles on the table
01:18:18Fire burning slowly
01:18:22I hold you closely
01:18:26Let's cherish the moment
01:18:29This season will leave before we know it
01:18:34Cause next year will be better than the past
01:18:38Cause we found what we didn't know we had
01:18:42I don't want any presents or snowfall
01:18:46I just want to embrace and remember it all
01:18:50This year was gone in an instant
01:18:54Turn the page, I hope we didn't miss it
01:18:57I just want this Christmas, baby
01:19:01I just want this Christmas to last
01:19:05La-da-da-da-da-da
01:19:09La-da-da-da-da-da
01:19:13La-da-da-da-da-da
01:19:17La-da-da-da
01:19:19All the cards are written
01:19:23All the gifts have their receipts
01:19:27Fire dying slowly
01:19:30We won't ever feel lonely
01:19:34Let's cherish this moment
01:19:38The calendar ends before we know it
01:19:43Hey! Merry Christmas!
01:19:45Good morning. Merry Christmas.
01:19:47Roni told me that you were here.
01:19:48Yeah, yeah, I was just about to leave.
01:19:50Good morning. Good thing you didn't leave last night.
01:19:53I know. It looks okay now, though.
01:19:56Yeah, the roads going back are probably clear.
01:19:58The plows were out all night.
01:20:00You want to get home soon, huh?
01:20:02I do, yeah. That would be really nice.
01:20:05And what about you, when you're coming back to our fair city?
01:20:08You know, we'll see.
01:20:10Okay, well I guess I'll see you when I see you.
01:20:13How about a coffee and a pastry for the road, Mary?
01:20:16That would be great.
01:20:17Okay.
01:20:32How'd you sleep?
01:21:02Blake, what are you doing here?
01:21:04Saying I'm sorry.
01:21:06No, no, I'm sorry. I didn't edit that piece.
01:21:09Once I got back to Chicago, I had nothing to do with it.
01:21:11I know.
01:21:12If I would have known how that piece was going to turn out,
01:21:14I never would have even accepted the assignment.
01:21:16Mary, I know.
01:21:19How?
01:21:21I should have known better.
01:21:23That you wouldn't have done that to me, or anyone else, really.
01:21:26And I'm just sorry that I reacted the way that I did.
01:21:31Thank you for saying that.
01:21:33I should have believed you.
01:21:36And when I realized that, I convinced Crash to call your editor
01:21:39and give me a copy of your cut.
01:21:44You know, for someone who's supposed to be taking it easy,
01:21:46Crash is a very busy man.
01:21:48Right.
01:21:49So what are you going to do about your company?
01:21:53I've been wrong about a lot lately.
01:21:55Johnson Toys isn't the problem.
01:21:57I am.
01:21:59So you're going to sell?
01:22:01No, I couldn't do that to the staff.
01:22:04Then what are you going to do?
01:22:07No more running from my past.
01:22:10I'm going to launch a new line of Christmas paintings
01:22:12to honor my grandfather's legacy.
01:22:15I love that.
01:22:17And it's all, it's all because of you.
01:22:20And once my grandfather's house is all fixed up,
01:22:22I'll start showing his paintings there.
01:22:24And maybe mine.
01:22:29Looks like you've got a lot of work ahead of you.
01:22:32Yeah.
01:22:33You know, that house has good bones.
01:22:36A lot of history.
01:22:39Well, after we get it fixed up,
01:22:41might need to find someone to help you run it.
01:22:44We?
01:22:48Maybe I was thinking about relocating.
01:22:51What about your job, your career?
01:22:55The kind of work that I love,
01:22:57it doesn't exist for me anymore.
01:23:00I was thinking that I would go somewhere
01:23:03that I could actually make a difference.
01:23:08And I did hear that there's a spot open
01:23:11on the town council.
01:23:14Maybe I could help people the way I always wanted to.
01:23:17Well, you got my vote.
01:23:20Just so you know,
01:23:22I thought your version of the story was spot on.
01:23:26Maybe I just made it for an audience of one.
01:23:29Well, sometimes all you need is one.
01:23:33Maybe I just made it for an audience of one.
01:23:35Well, sometimes all you need is one person to make a difference.
01:23:40Maybe it's the right one.
01:24:02Maybe it's the right one.
01:24:32You're my happy holiday.
01:24:36You're my happy holiday.
01:24:40You're my happy holiday.
01:24:45You're my happy holiday.
01:24:56Turning down our road, I'm like a kid again.
01:25:01I can't wait to see all of my family and all of my friends.
01:25:09And I'm on my way,
01:25:12cause you're my happy holiday.
01:25:16You're my happy holiday.
01:25:21You're my happy holiday.
01:25:25You're my happy holiday.
01:25:30You're my happy holiday.
01:25:32We'll tell stories, make our own.
01:25:34We'll sing songs the whole world knows.
01:25:41Everyone we love is here,
01:25:43drinking up the season's cheer.
01:25:52You're my happy holiday.
01:25:57You're my happy holiday.
01:26:01You're my happy holiday.
01:26:05You're my happy holiday.
