00:00I work in a family business, the greatest basketball franchise in the history of the
00:08game.
00:09The Los Angeles Waves.
00:10First of all, we want to welcome you and I think it's for the first time, Roberto Sánchez,
00:15what a pleasure to have you here at People in Spanish.
00:17How are you?
00:18Very good, very good, thank you.
00:20A pleasure to be here with you today.
00:22Hey, there's a lot to talk about.
00:25It's a great time in your career.
00:27There's a lot going on.
00:29The first one we're going to start with is this series, Running Point, which is on Netflix.
00:36A stellar cast, you're with Kate Hudson.
00:41It's a very interesting series and I want you to start telling us first about your role,
00:47which is called Steven Ramírez.
00:49Tell us about him and how it was to record this series.
00:53Well, I play the role of Steven Ramírez, who is in charge of, he's the chairman of
00:58the board for the basketball team and I'm the only one who worked with the father of
01:08Kate Hudson, you know?
01:10And he passed away, so now I have to make sure that Kate and the brothers, they don't
01:20destroy what we've built, you know?
01:23I'm the old school.
01:25So, for me, it was a character that I really loved and to have the opportunity to work
01:33with Kate, who normally doesn't do TV shows.
01:36She's a film actor, you know what I mean?
01:39So, that opportunity to work with her and to have so many scenes with her, for me,
01:45it was tremendous pride.
01:48Hey, how cool, because I was just thinking that I hadn't seen her in a long time, not
01:52just in movies, but on screen.
01:54She's dedicated herself to other projects.
01:56We're not going to focus so much on her, but I think it's a big deal that she's back,
01:59right?
02:00Yes, yes.
02:01She's on the small screen.
02:02I'm seeing that the series is doing very well on Netflix.
02:04Very, very well.
02:05There's a lot of interest right now in these dramas, right?
02:08Like, of succession, of what happens in those meeting rooms, right?
02:12Of those powerful families.
02:15What attracted you the most from the script and from this story?
02:18Well, look, when they offered me the role, I said no twice.
02:26I wasn't interested.
02:27Uh-huh.
02:28It was crazy, crazy.
02:29But what happened was that I was working on another TV show in Atlanta called BMF.
02:34Uh-huh.
02:35So, I would have to travel from Atlanta to Los Angeles and back and forth.
02:38And at that time, I had a problem with my ankle.
02:41So, I said no twice.
02:44And finally, the third time they offered me, we talked again.
02:48Uh-huh.
02:49And at that moment, I said yes.
02:51And thank God, because at that time, I had only read part of what this show was going to do.
02:58But at that time, they gave me the 10 episodes.
03:01And when I saw what this show was going to do, I said, thank God that we were able to
03:07work, to have the opportunity to do this show.
03:11But reading it, but also watching it and seeing it, how they put it together,
03:20I was like, oh my God, thank you so much that I was able to do this.
03:24Because tremendous cast, tremendous production, I mean, I was there, I worked on it.
03:34And when I saw it, I was pleasantly surprised at how great this show is.
03:41I think you are someone, and maybe I'm completely wrong,
03:44but I think you have fun in some way, or you try to enjoy your characters,
03:49because they are so different from each other.
03:52And we're going to talk about that in a second.
03:54But first, I want to ask you a little more in detail.
03:57How did you get in? How did you take that leap into acting?
04:00Because from the Navy, to modeling, to acting, it's not like a straight path.
04:09No, look, let me tell you, that was a miracle.
04:15I was doing commercials, I was doing modeling, I was very happy with that.
04:20I was working as a security guard in Miami, in the Metro Rail,
04:24I don't know if you know the trains they have in Miami.
04:27And it was simply an agent that I had at that time,
04:31who said, Roberto, I know you're not interested in acting,
04:35but I want to submit you for this film, because I think they'll like your look.
04:39And I didn't know anything, I said, what do I have to do?
04:41No, no, no, no, no, if you get the audition,
04:43I'm going to send you a paper and you have to memorize the lines.
04:48I was lost, I didn't know any of that.
04:50And it just so happens that they like me, I get a callback, and I come back.
04:54And the callback is in front of the famous director John Singleton.
04:59And this man, look, gave me three opportunities.
05:03It's a scene where I grab Paul Walker and I'm screaming,
05:06no, put the gun down, put the gun down.
05:08And he's sitting there and he's saying, no, no, no.
05:12And now I'm getting nervous because I see that,
05:14listen to me, this is not going well.
05:16And he says to me, do you speak Spanish?
05:18And I say, yes.
05:19Okay, do it in Spanish.
05:20Listen to me, you know?
05:22And he starts saying words that I don't want to say here.
05:24And he's sitting like this, no.
05:27And I said, no, I've already lost this.
05:30And then he gave me a piece of advice,
05:33he gave me a piece of advice and he told me, look,
05:35I know a lot of Cubans.
05:37And when those Cubans get mad,
05:41they get mad.
05:43It's over.
05:44And I don't know what happened,
05:45a light bulb went off in my head.
05:47And I said, no, this guy wants a crazy Tony Montana.
05:51And he grabbed Paul Walker and he screamed,
05:54that's what Casim Directo was saying, cut, cut.
05:57And I didn't see it because I was lost, screaming.
06:01And John Singleton is sitting there doing,
06:03that's what I wanted, that.
06:06There it is.
06:07And that moment changed my career.
06:10And I have to tell you,
06:11there are times when we have people in our lives
06:14that they see something in us that we ourselves don't see.
06:18Hey, Roberto, nice to meet you.
06:20Nice to have you here.
06:22Congratulations on Running Point and everything you're cooking.
06:25See you soon.
06:27Thank you very much, it's been a pleasure.
06:29Thank you so much.
