00:00PTV Sports is back! We will talk to Girl Scout Game Volleyball Program Chair, Kaye Daly.
00:07Good morning!
00:09Hello, good morning!
00:10This will be an inspirational story this morning.
00:14And with that, Miss Kaye, tell us the story behind Girl Scout Game.
00:20So Girl Scout Game, we are a non-profit organization built in, we started in 2015 actually.
00:28So it's our 10-year anniversary this year.
00:31And we are all women athletes.
00:34Our founder is two athletes also from Ateneo, Nika Arcelia and Kersanti.
00:43So they started the group in 2015 not knowing that it will be this big today.
00:50But it's giving opportunities for underprivileged girls to experience playing sports that are different.
00:59So we have basketball, volleyball, rugby and football.
01:02So different sports that they usually don't experience in their community.
01:08But what was your inspiration for this Girl Scout Game?
01:12This is a women empowerment through sports that you mentioned for the underprivileged girls.
01:18So what's the inspiration behind building this GGG?
01:20Yes, so there are a lot of studies that women are not given as many opportunities as men in terms of sports.
01:27And a lot of girls usually quit sports because of also body insecurities or you know,
01:37the typical societal standards of patriarchy or whatever.
01:43But by doing this, we're able to show the girls that there is a future in sports or values in sports.
01:52Because all our coaches are all women athletes and all our volunteers are also women.
01:57So in that way, they can see that there are role models that they can follow after playing.
02:06Or there are opportunities for girls in that field.
02:10Because we have a lot of professionals also.
02:13Former athletes, now engineers, attorneys, and so on and so forth.
02:20Parter, Kay mentioned earlier that the change of GGG is already big.
02:26How is it different from the time it was inaugurated?
02:30So I was telling you earlier that our humble beginnings, we used to do roving sports camps.
02:37So it's two different modules now because of the pandemic.
02:41So before, we would go everywhere in the Philippines, partnering up with different LGs and schools.
02:47So we would just do the trainings in whatever court we have.
02:50So if there's a court available, we would go there.
02:53If there's a net available, we would go there.
02:55But now with different sponsorships with different brands and different partnerships,
02:59different organizations also are reaching out to us to help financially.
03:05Or others are also giving volunteers.
03:08So now, we have a home court in Santa Maria, Bolacan in Sacred Heart Academy.
03:14And that home court is more equipped to host more camps.
03:19And that's what we've been doing for the past five years since we started the partnership in 2018.
03:26Ms. Kay and I were talking earlier and I asked,
03:30the design of the court here in Sacred Heart is different.
03:34It's like a work of art.
03:37It's very artistic, right? It's very colorful.
03:39That's the first time we've seen that, to meet Megota.
03:42What's even better is that a WNBA player even visited and played with the players of the Girls' Cat game.
03:47But tell us, what's the idea behind this?
03:50Who's the artist behind this?
03:51And what's the inspiration behind this art?
03:54So, even before that court was made,
03:58before, she already had other artworks.
04:00But this time, Jill, the artist, she designed the court specifically for the Sabrina brand.
04:08So, you can see what she did for basketball.
04:13Because Sabrina is also a game changer.
04:16So, she embodies what we try to do with Girls' Cat game also.
04:22So, with her creativity, I don't know how they did it.
04:27But the design of the court embodies Sabrina's recent championships.
04:32And the girls and the different...
04:37When you see the court, the drawings of the kids are different.
04:42The art around the court.
04:46So, it embodies empowerment, I think.
04:50And every girl can really make a difference.
04:53I'm sure the participants of the GGG will be empowered.
04:58But how do you choose the participants for the GGG?
05:03Okay, so we have two modules.
05:05So, before the pandemic, we would go in different barangays and different areas in the Philippines.
05:10And then from there, we would have partner communities or partner schools.
05:15Because it gives 10 to 12-year-old girls for a two-day camp.
05:20So, it's a back-to-back camp.
05:22We usually do it Saturday and Sunday.
05:24But now, we do have our GGG club.
05:27So, to track the sustainability.
05:31Because usually, before, it's a two-weekend event.
05:35But now, it's all year round.
05:38So, we have sign-ups on our website.
05:41And then, we vet those who signed up.
05:44So, someone calls from our team to see how interested they are.
05:48And then, they're with us for a year.
05:50So, aside from the four camps, before, we used to do it in two days.
05:56All the sports in two days.
05:58But now, it's a span of one year.
06:00So, the next one that we're having now is actually rugby.
06:03So, they're going to be doing a three-weekend rugby.
06:06And then, they also have online sessions.
06:08Online check-in with our coaches.
06:11To track their development in the sport that's scheduled that time.
06:20So, I guess online, we have sign-ups on our website.
06:26So, we do it every year.
06:29So, the sign-ups.
06:30It's fun because before, it's a two-day training.
06:34But now, it's a one-year program.
06:38And I'm sure our participants are more focused for the GGG.
06:42Because it's a one-year training program.
06:45Yes. I'm just curious about your teammates.
06:47Girl Scout Games started in 2015.
06:49You've been doing this for 10 years.
06:51So, how are the pioneers who played in the Girl Scout Games?
06:57Did they play for the universities?
07:00In UAT, NCA?
07:01Or professional?
07:03Professional.
07:04Do you have a Girl Scout team that plays in the Philippines?
07:10Actually, that's our dream.
07:12That's the motivation for the club.
07:15To see the sustainability of the program.
07:19But we do have some girls, I think,
07:22that started playing in the varsity teams in their schools.
07:26And then, recently,
07:30the one with Sabrina, actually.
07:32They're not part of the club yet.
07:34But recently, we have a group of girls
07:36who are part of the camp,
07:38who were champions in the earlier division
07:42to play in the national games.
07:45But only in the sectionals, regionals area.
07:49So, hopefully, in the near future,
07:52we'll have products of the GGG
07:56that we can watch on TV.
08:00That's our dream.
08:01To be able to change lives of those children
08:05in that way.
08:06To have an athletic scholarship.
08:08Just like the founders of the Girl Scout Games itself.
08:13Ms. Gay, do you collaborate with the local,
08:15both local and private sectors
08:18for the expansion of the GGG?
08:21Yes, we do collaborate.
08:23So, we have partners
08:26from different NGOs.
08:28So, they usually ask what we need.
08:30On our end, for LGUs,
08:33if they wanted to bring a camp there.
08:36So, we've done camps all over the Philippines.
08:39We've done it in Mindanao.
08:40We've done it in Bacolod.
08:45All over Luzon.
08:46So, with different LGUs and different schools.
08:49So, yeah, we do have partnerships also.
08:52So, they can just reach out
08:54and see where they can collaborate with the program.
08:59Ms. Gay, aside from sports,
09:01of course, we're also developing
09:03the hopes and personalities of the girls.
09:05But what are the life skills
09:07taught by the Girl Scout Games
09:09so that they can be a good Filipino
09:11when they grow up here in the Girl Scout Games?
09:14Yeah, I think sports play a huge role
09:18in the development of a person's character.
09:23So, that's why we want those kids
09:25to learn the value of sports.
09:27So, first of all, discipline
09:29so that they can be goal-getters.
09:32But at the end of the day,
09:34it's really about respect with your teammates,
09:37your respect for your teammates,
09:39your respect for your coaches
09:40that are deep-rooted in being a good person.
09:44So, at the end of the day,
09:45we're not teaching them sports
09:47because they're good or they're a good person.
09:50But we want to teach them sports
09:52so they can be better individuals.
09:56What are the future plans of GGG,
09:59aside from the ones we mentioned earlier,
10:01to be seen in the big leagues
10:04like UAAP, NCAA?
10:08Yes.
10:09Actually, when we were doing the court reveal
10:12and Sacred Heart,
10:13was that two weeks ago?
10:15Yes, March 15.
10:17March 12, I think.
10:19March 12.
10:20When we were doing the court reveal,
10:22they made all the core team,
10:24or our coaches,
10:25to pull the...
10:41to have that one court in that one area.
10:44So, hopefully, in the future,
10:45we'll have a lot of home courts
10:48to open up that opportunity,
10:50not just in that school,
10:52but in different areas of the Philippines.
10:54So, hopefully, in the future,
10:55we'll have one in Los Angeles-Mindanao.
10:58So, one court at a time,
11:01one game at a time,
11:02one girl at a time.
11:03Oh, I like that.
11:04That's a good start.
11:05The court we saw was really nice.
11:06Actually, there's also one outside.
11:08Is that part of Girls' God Game?
11:09There's an indoor and then outdoor court.
11:11Yes, the indoor and outdoor court
11:12are part of Girls' God Game.
11:14And then the field also on the side,
11:16we also use that for different camps.
11:18So, in our football,
11:19we use the field on the side of the court.
11:22There are several sports included with GGG.
11:25Do you plan to expand it more?
11:27We have a lot of sports.
11:29Yes.
11:31Sorry to our managing director,
11:34but I always tell him,
11:37let's add sports.
11:40Philippines has been doing very well
11:42in softball and baseball.
11:44And that's one sport
11:46that we're trying to look into expanding
11:49because a lot of our public schools
11:52do well in the level.
11:56Until 15 years old, actually,
11:58we were able to represent the Philippines
12:01in the Softball World Cup in 2023.
12:04But then after,
12:05the coaches said,
12:06after 15 years old,
12:07usually it's hard to raise the level
12:12to compete on the world stage.
12:14So, we want to expose
12:16softball and baseball also,
12:18the non-mainstream sports
12:21for other kids to learn.
12:24We'll look forward to that.
12:25Ms. Kayne,
12:26recently, a lot of Filipino athletes
12:29are participating in the world stage.
12:31How is Girls' God Game used?
12:33To inspire these young athletes
12:35to also be part of the gold medalists
12:38like Heidlin Diaz,
12:39of course, Alex Yala,
12:40we just heard about her.
12:42So, how do we use
12:43these achievements of our athletes,
12:45especially Filipino athletes,
12:46to help our kids here in Girls' God Game?
12:49So, what we do with Girls' God Game
12:51is we separate them in different groups.
12:53And then those groups are called,
12:55when there's a camp,
12:57they have a small placard,
12:59and they're a team,
13:01a team for volleyball,
13:03or a team,
13:04and then other volleyball players
13:05that are popular,
13:07or for example, in basketball,
13:08the team has a picture,
13:13and then we also tell them
13:15their achievements.
13:16And the other girls get surprised,
13:18like, oh, really?
13:20They actually achieved that?
13:22And they're like,
13:23pure Filipinas.
13:25So, I think we use,
13:27like you said,
13:28the platform that we have,
13:30and the recent achievements
13:33of our Filipino athletes
13:35to also educate the girls
13:37that, you know,
13:39women really can.
13:41That's beautiful.
13:43Very empowering.
13:44Exactly.
13:45It's March now,
13:46International Women's Day.
13:48Exactly.
13:49And now,
13:50one last thing.
13:51Yes, sir.
13:52Message to your students,
13:54to all of you who are
13:55joining Girls' God Game.
13:56Shout out.
13:57Maybe some of them
13:58would like to say something.
13:59Yes.
14:00So, to our Girls' God Game team,
14:04see you at the next camp.
14:06So, we're going to do
14:07our next camp very soon.
14:08And I just want to say
14:09thank you to our founders also,
14:12KK Curzon and Nika,
14:13and our Managing Director,
14:15Jelly and Mariana,
14:16and to the core team
14:18that tirelessly,
14:19for the past 10 years,
14:21have been working
14:23with all the girls.
14:26Thank you, thank you, thank you.
14:28And I'm so happy
14:29that we have come this far.
14:30And to the next 10 years,
14:32I hope more and more blessings
14:35for Girls' God Game
14:36and more lives changed
14:38through sports.
14:40With that,
14:41thank you so much, Ms. Gay.
14:43It's such an honor
14:44that we were with you
14:45this morning.
