00:00Patrick, this is your first television interview since your illness.
00:03I have no idea what I'm going to say.
00:05Welcome to Watch Mojo Español.
00:08Today we will meet the famous characters who gave interviews
00:12knowing that maybe they didn't have much time left.
00:15They look at you like you're a dead man walking, basically.
00:21Charlton Heston.
00:23Protagonist of classic movies like Ben-Hur and The Planet of the Apes,
00:27few actors dominated the screen like Charlton Heston.
00:32Take your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty ape!
00:37Although he began to accept fewer protagonists,
00:39he continued under the spotlight with important cameos
00:42and as president of the NRA.
00:45He definitely withdrew from the public eye
00:48after announcing that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's in August 2002.
00:53It is difficult to watch what age and Alzheimer's are doing
00:57to a man who's always appeared to be so strong.
00:59That December, Heston and his wife, Lydia Clark,
01:03received journalist Peter Jennings at home,
01:06who was able to verify that the disease was already affecting the aged actor,
01:11as he had difficulties remembering things.
01:14Despite trying to be brave, Heston suspected he would be afraid
01:19as his condition inevitably worsened.
01:22I don't mean for a second, Charlton, to impose my own emotions on you.
01:27But I think I'd really be afraid.
01:30I probably will be afraid too, when it gets closer.
01:35But I don't feel those things.
01:37This was his last television interview before his death in April 2008.
01:43Alex Trebek.
01:44It was impossible to imagine Jeopardy without Alex Trebek for more than 35 years.
01:51Here is the hope of Jeopardy, Alex Trebek!
01:57Thank you, Johnny Gilbert, and thank you, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome everyone.
02:00Although the long-term game show could last forever,
02:04in 2019 it was clear that Trebek's phenomenal presence would soon end.
02:10The television legend was diagnosed with pancreas cancer in stage 4.
02:16While seeking treatment, he continued to commit to his tasks in Jeopardy.
02:20I plan to beat the low survival rate statistics for this disease.
02:27Truth told, I have to.
02:29Because under the terms of my contract, I have to host Jeopardy for three more years.
02:35So help me, keep the faith, and we'll win.
02:39He also talked about his illness in several interviews.
02:42Trebek maintained an optimistic attitude and expressed his desire to return to the Jeopardy set.
02:48He also did not sweeten his condition, as he said he was not afraid of death.
02:54One thing they're not gonna say at my funeral as a part of a eulogy,
02:59he was taken from us too soon.
03:01I'm 79 years old.
03:02So, hey, I've lived a good life, a full life, and I'm nearing the end of that life.
03:07I know that.
03:09I'm not gonna delude myself.
03:11So, if it happens, it happens.
03:13During the interviews, Trebek balanced work and treatment for 20 months.
03:19He shot his last episode of Jeopardy in October 2020 and died several days later.
03:26John McCain.
03:27This Arizona senator had already overcome cancer.
03:31However, nothing could prepare him for July 2017.
03:35After doctors discovered a blood clot in his left eye, he underwent surgery.
03:41This morning, a giant of the Senate is battling brain cancer.
03:45Senator John McCain is recovering at home in Arizona.
03:48After having surgery last Friday to remove a blood clot above his left eye.
03:53Further tests, his doctors say, revealed a tumor.
04:19I was driving up here, and I got about two-thirds of the way up.
04:25And my doctor called and said, you gotta come back.
04:28And I said, hey, today is Friday.
04:30I'll just come in on Monday.
04:32And she said, no, you have to come now.
04:34It's very serious.
04:49I have feelings sometimes of fear of what happens.
04:55But as soon as I get that, I say, wait a minute.
04:59Wait a minute.
05:00You've been around a long time, old man.
05:02You've had a great life.
05:03You've had a great experience.
05:19We think what we've done is to reinvent the phone.
05:24And completely change what your expectations are going to be for what you can carry in your pocket.
05:48A giant in business, technology, and entertainment, Steve Jobs had been battling pancreatic cancer for eight years.
06:19Tony Perkins died due to complications related to AIDS.
06:22The actor, better known for playing Norman Bates, had been receiving private treatment for the last two years.
06:30And it wasn't until later when he made his disease public.
06:49A month after his death, AMC aired what turned out to be his last interview with film professor Richard Brown.
07:01Perkins reflected on his work in films like Desire Under the Elm, Friendly Persuasion, and, of course, Psycho.
07:19Haven't you?
07:22The interview focused on Perkins' legacy and his acting career.
07:26However, at the end, he mentioned how fortunate he felt to be still alive.
07:31And working.
07:33Although he seemed hopeful about the future, his disease passed him by.
07:38Thus, this retrospective interview served as a bitter farewell.
07:43The fact that I'm still working, still alive, and still productive means more to me than anything.
07:50Patrick Swayze, the star of Dirty Dancing and Ghost, was in the middle of filming The Beast when he found out he had stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
08:01I need this envelope delivered to that exact address at 1400 Sharp. You got it?
08:06What is it?
08:08It's an envelope.
08:10Patrick finished his work during the season while receiving treatment.
08:15He also found the strength to talk to Barbara Walters.
08:18With his wife Lisa Niemi by his side, he expressed his gratitude to those who had sent him letters of support.
08:25The outpouring of love has constantly astounded me.
08:28These letters and the kind of genuine love and support, without expecting anything in return, has personally restored my faith in what people are made of.
08:38He was grateful for having overcome the 10 months of treatment and trusted he could move forward.
08:44Even so, he knew his time was limited.
08:47In the best of cases, he thought he would live another 5 years, although he believed 2 would be more realistic.
08:53Unfortunately, it was even less.
08:55He died in September 2009, 9 months after the interview was broadcast.
09:01Last month, Patrick and his doctors decided to discontinue treatment.
09:05Anything that could be done had been tried.
09:08His last days were spent at home in his ranch, resting without pain.
09:12Chadwick Boseman
09:14Chadwick Boseman discovered he had colon cancer in stage 3 in 2016.
09:21During the next 4 years, he made The Black Panther a universal icon.
09:31Beyond the MCU, he appeared in several other projects while privately supporting chemotherapy and surgeries.
09:39What makes his achievements even more heroic is that he never showed any sign of deterioration of his health during the interviews.
09:47When he saw Boseman laughing with the nocturnal presenters, he looked like an actor with a long career ahead of him.
09:58However, as his cancer progressed in stage 4, Boseman's life was tragically cut short.
10:05During an interview in 2018, he mentioned with tears in his eyes two sick, terminal children who had decided to live long enough to see Black Panther.
10:17It put me back in the mind of being a kid, just to experience those two little boys' anticipation of this movie.
10:26And when I found out that they...
10:28This interview is even more emotional knowing the actor's problems in secret and how his legacy continues to inspire thousands.
10:35Olivia Newton-John
10:37After surviving two previous experiences with cancer, Olivia Newton-John faced another assault in 2017.
10:46The star of Grease seemed resilient when addressing the return of her cancer during interviews with 60 Minutes Australia and on the show Today.
10:56How is it the second time around different for you?
11:00Um...
11:02I think it's not as frightening.
11:04You know, I've had a wonderful life and so I'm not as freaked out as I was when I had a young child.
11:10Speaking of treatment, Newton-John seemed confident that she could overcome cancer again.
11:16During the next five years, she gave news about her life and health in several interviews.
11:22Although she always seemed optimistic, in an interview in 2021 with Extra, she revealed that her cancer had not disappeared.
11:30I don't know that I'm cancer-free, but I am stable and feeling well.
11:36And, um...
11:38So I feel very fortunate.
11:40In February 2022, she spoke with Direct Talk and said that her favorite expression was,
11:45Will this also happen?
11:47Sadly, it was a goodbye message as Newton-John passed away that same August.
11:53However, her contribution to the research of breast cancer continues to make a difference.
11:59Life is never the same. We're moving and changing all the time. You just gotta go with the flow.
12:04If you can, don't resist because it'll take you down.
12:07Karen Black.
12:08Many celebrities have given interviews knowing that it could be the last.
12:12But few have adopted a approach like Karen Black.
12:35The actress nominated for the Oscar received the cancer diagnosis in November 2010.
12:41After being removed from the pancreas, she lost a lot of weight and had a hard time getting out of bed.
12:47As her condition worsened, she decided that she wanted to document the final stages of her life.
12:53There's nothing that blocks me from loving my fellow man, from feeling close to my fellow man, and knowing I've always known this.
13:06According to journalist Elliot Mintz, Black got in touch with him about a month before his death, in August 2013.
13:16At his request, he interviewed her from the hospital bed.
13:19They both talked about their life and career, as well as their friendship.
13:23Years later, Mintz reflected that nothing in his life as an interviewer had prepared him for that conversation.
13:36But, uh, not so much. Kind of on and off.

13:53Now, let's get to the end.
13:56Shannen Doherty
13:58Shannen Doherty had a history of medical problems, including a battle against breast cancer in stage 3 in 2015.
14:07It was about a year and a half ago you said that you were in remission, so how's everything going?
14:11Everything is going really well. I mean, you know, you hear the word remission.
14:14I know.
14:15There's, it's a rush of different emotions, right?
14:18It's, it's like, what's next? There's a little bit of fear and apprehension.
14:22Although Doherty went into remission in 2017, the cancer finally returned and advanced to stage 4.
14:29After initially keeping his diagnosis in private, he shared his heartbreaking experience in an interview with ABC.
14:38This is a much more difficult one to deal with. I'm grappling. I haven't found my path and my peace.
15:00Let's be clear.
15:07Doherty also had time to answer the questions of his fans.
15:10Doherty continued to record the podcast regularly until his death in July 2024.
15:17The actress rose to fame for her roles on Beverly Hills 90210 and Charmed and was so open about her valiant fight with cancer for nearly a decade.
15:25She passed away at the age of 53.
