00:00Good evening, Kapuso! I am your Kuya Kim, who will give you the trivia behind the trending news.
00:09If there is a plant, there will be a harvest.
00:12So to make sure that our plants and animals are protected here in the Philippines,
00:16did you know that experts from UP Los Banos have impacted bengalitos in a vault in Europe?
00:26We can't help but feel it here in the Philippines.
00:29The effect of climate change.
00:31Because of global warming, these typhoons are getting stronger.
00:35It is possible to reduce it compared to our 21 per year average.
00:39But while it is decreasing, it is getting stronger.
00:42This is what matters.
00:43The Philippines is also the third country to be listed in the World Risk Index
00:48as the most disaster-prone country in the world.
00:51We are in a situation where the risk is too high.
00:53We should take care because we will put ourselves in danger.
00:56Many communities will be affected.
00:58And the effects of the continuous change of our climate,
01:00not only humans, but also the plants that grow on our land.
01:04Our plants will also die.
01:06Many of our plants are disappearing.
01:08If it disappears, we will not be able to return it.
01:11So that some of our plants will not completely disappear,
01:13especially those that we harvest.
01:17The National Plant Genetic Resources Laboratory or NPGRL
01:21of the Institute of Plant Breeding of the University of the Philippines Los Banos
01:24has thought of a way
01:25to deposit seeds or seeds in the Svalbard Global Seed Vault.
01:29The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is a facility located in Spitsbergen,
01:33a remote island in Norway.
01:35It serves as a seed bank or bank for seeds.
01:37Here, they hide and take care of duplicates or seeds of a plant
01:41to protect them from any natural disaster or calamity caused by humans.
01:45It is a duplicate because the similarities of the plants that are hidden there,
01:49if there is a war or a storm, there is a copy that can be taken.
01:53There are 127 depositors from 233 countries and territories
01:57that have impacted on the duplicates.
01:59At present, there are 1.3 million seeds that are hidden or buried there.
02:05In February, Hidalisa went to Norway to deposit in the Svalbard Global Seed Vault
02:09the 14 boxes of NPGRL that contain different seeds.
02:13My seed box is just a small box.
02:15It contains rice beans, sorghum, and eggplant.
02:20In October 2024, we were able to deposit tomatoes, chilies,
02:26bitter gourd, or kaupi, and string beans.
02:29We can withdraw our deposits anytime we need.
02:35This is our backup in case anything happens to our plants.
02:39A good example of the importance of the vault is the war in Syria.
02:43Because of the Syrian Civil War, many of their plants were destroyed.
02:47They were not the first country to withdraw from the vault.
02:49What they did was they took what they deposited, planted it,
02:53and part of what was planted was returned to the seed vault.
02:57But why is it so important for the NPGRL to preserve our plants in the Philippines?
03:03We need different kinds of plants because in a large area,
03:08it is easy to be attacked by insects or pests.
03:11And if it's different, we have many kinds of food.
03:14That's why they continue their mission to make these plants more abundant.
03:17Our tagline is conservation through use.
03:20If our diet is diverse, we can see the importance of eating different kinds of vegetables.
03:26If we preserve it, it will be planted by our farmers.
03:30Second, let's plant.
03:32Even if it's just at home, our last resort is the safety duplication in the Svalbard.
03:38But do you have any idea how the plants survive in a seed vault?
03:43The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is located in a mountain in Spitsbergen, Norway.
03:48The temperature is very cold.
03:50A natural freezer serves the plants.
03:53The plants are placed in durable and sterilized containers.
03:57These containers are placed in a vault where the humidity is controlled
04:01and the temperature is maintained at negative 18 degrees Celsius.
04:06Meanwhile, to find out what's behind the viral news,
04:09post or comment with the hashtag Kuya Kim.
04:12Always remember, it's important to know.
04:15I am Kuya Kim and I will answer you 24 hours a day.
