AccuWeather's Joe Lundberg looks ahead to next week where a break from severe weather should provide some relief for the nation. A chilly start of spring is in store for the Midwest and Northeast.
Transcript
00:00First full week of spring is going to appear next week and what's it going to look like
00:09across the country?
00:10Well, usually you have to deal with severe weather and you get some warmth that's starting
00:13to show up.
00:14Well, we'll see a little bit of that, but not much in the way of severe effect.
00:17I think that that's one of our highlights for next week.
00:20It's generally not a big stormy pattern until maybe next week and beyond.
00:23However, there's a lot of chilly air in the pattern and as you see typically in late March
00:27and early April, the northern tier states are the places where you have to be concerned
00:31about any opportunities for some snow.
00:33In contrast, it may feel more like May or even early June in portions of the southwest
00:38and the reason why, look at the strength of this amplitude ridge here in the Rockies.
00:43As that bulges northward, you're going to bring the warmth with it and a lot of sunshine.
00:46So places like Billings, Salt Lake City, St. George, Las Vegas, Albuquerque, you're going
00:51to see temperatures well above historical averages.
00:53In contrast, in the east, you're going to see a lot of chilly air days in the forties
00:57and maybe fifties.
00:58Chicago to New York City, Washington D.C., concerned as high pressure tries to develop
01:03in here Wednesday night, that you may have some late season frost that gets down into
01:07the Tennessee Valley and the southern Appalachians and most of the week after Monday morning
01:11is probably going to be dry in most of the southeast.
01:14But as we take a look at these waves of cold that will be coming, I think the worst of
01:17the one is probably Wednesday into Thursday for the Ohio Valley to the east and again
01:21as that high pressure system comes down in here, that's probably your coldest night on
01:25the averages next week.
01:26But then toward the late week period, that cold will start to retreat to the north and
01:30east and as it does, maybe a storm that comes out of the Rockies, there could be some severe
01:34weather with that and maybe some snow to its north.
01:37This pattern really doesn't change as we wrap up the month of March and go into the first
01:40week of April.
01:41Still some ridging in the Rockies, warm and dry weather there.
01:44Keep an eye on a storm for the first and second of April.
01:47That could be a big one for California.
