Speaking at a New College event on Thursday, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) accused Congress of moving too slowly in codifying President Trump's border policies.

00:00Secretary, I'll come back to you.
00:04A lot's been said lately about, until we get this under control, until there's some real
00:08meaningful long-term solution, just shut down the border completely.
00:13Your thoughts?
00:14Well, I think that's what President Trump and the team is doing, right?
00:18They're using the authorities that they have to make sure that they protect the American
00:22people.
00:23So the national emergency, a 212F order, all the things that they're doing now are things
00:27that could have been done last four years under President Biden, right?
00:30They chose not to do that from just the sheer will of not wanting to go in a certain direction.
00:36So we hear a lot of talk about comprehensive immigration reform, which is like the worst
00:42term I've ever heard.
00:43But I think what the Republican Congress needs to do now is look at all the actions that
00:49President Trump and his team are putting in place, and how do you codify that into law
00:53so that if you do have a different president from a different party, that they're just
00:57not going to undo everything.
00:59And so Congress really needs to take a good look at what's being done here, put it into
01:05law so that we don't have the chaos of the last four years that we had under President
01:10Biden at that border.
01:12Because that's what will happen if we don't get a lot of this just enshrined into law.
01:18Executive authority is great because you can do it quickly, you can do it fast.
01:22I'm just worried in four years when President Trump leaves office, and it's not a Republican
01:27and a conservative that has an enforcement mindset, what is that border going to look
01:31like?
01:32And so that's where I would push the Republican Congress to do, you know, obviously, we can
01:37get a lot of infrastructure.
01:38I know we're building wall, there's a maritime buoy going in in South Texas, there's a lot
01:43of stuff that President Trump's doing today, but you got to get it codified into law.
01:48And they've really not in Congress done anything to codify any of these actions.
01:57I mean, let's just be clear.
01:59You know, you came in and it's almost like you have the Trump administration has gone
02:04a mile, you know, 100 miles a minute on all this stuff, you know, everything but the kitchen
02:09sink to move the country in the right direction.
02:13Congress is like almost the opposite, like they're on a two week vacation right now.
02:18They haven't voted to codify, they haven't successfully codified a single executive
02:23order.
02:24You know, we were talking about the border wall, they just passed a continuing resolution,
02:29Republicans votes, that did not provide one cent for the border wall.
02:33It was just a continuation of Biden's spending from last year.
02:38That's all it was.
02:39USAID, they go on cable news, oh, this is so, so bad, and yet they voted to fully fund
02:45AID.
02:46Now, President Trump's not going to probably allow some of these grants to go out, which
02:50is great, but why wouldn't Congress at least do that?
02:53I mean, Doge is doing all this stuff.
02:55So I think that they've not shown any inclination to do what Chad is saying needs to be done.
03:01And what will happen is you will absolutely see all that go up in smoke.
03:06If a new president comes in in 29 that doesn't agree with these policies, it'll happen like
03:11that.
03:12So, you know, you got to start to think strategically.
03:14You got to start to think more long term.
03:17And it's great to see what's happened at the border for it to go down by 96, 98 percent,
03:22whatever, in two months when they said you needed some convoluted bill to be able to
03:26secure the border.
03:27That was obviously a lie, but it's been proven to be a lie.
03:30But you can just as easily reopen the border like Biden did.
03:33I mean, he reopened the border.
03:35He was flying people in.
03:37They were literally going to foreign countries and flying people in to the country and dumping
03:42them all over the United States.
03:44And that happened for four years.
03:46So we've got to get this into law.
03:49And I think Congress really needs to be way, way more aggressive than what they've been
03:54so far.
