00:00Welcome to another episode of the Goldmouth Action Podcast, where we take a look at all
00:04the latest goings on at Brighton, Hove Abbey and Crawley Town. I'm Matt Pole and this week
00:08I'm joined by Brighton writer Darren Howard, Crawley Town expert Mark Dunford as well as
00:12Sam Morton who covers both the Seagulls and the Reds. Brighton, twice pegged back fellow
00:16top five challengers Manchester City and an entertaining two will draw on Saturday afternoon.
00:20We'll look back at that draw at the Itty Hatt plus, we'll reflect on how it's been season
00:24so far as well as bring you all the latest from Crawley Town, who this week have bid
00:28farewell to manager Rob Elliott after a torrid run of form. You can read all the stories
00:32we are talking about, videos and pictures online at sussexworld.co.uk forward slash
00:36sport and you can check out other great videos on shotstv.com and through the channel 262.
00:41You may also be watching on latest TV, so thank you very much for tuning in. And we'll
00:45start at the Itty Hatt where Erling Haaland sent Brian King and Barbara Kruger in the
00:49runway with his 11th minute penalty to open scoring for City. In a game of superb goals,
00:54Pervez's Stupinyan equalised with a curling free kick that bounced him off the post before
00:57Omar Mahmoud's level with a marvellous 20-yard strike in the bottom corner. But City's brutal
01:02defence let them down again three minutes after the restart as Abdulkadir Kusanov diverted
01:07Jake Hinshaward's effort into his own net. It was very much a pulsating game, wasn't
01:12it, Darren? Sum that Albion performance up for us.
01:15Yeah, I think overall it was a good display from Brighton and I think it shows that they
01:21can go to these places now and go toe-to-toe with the very best in the Premier League and
01:27it was a really entertaining game. And one I think the fans that travelled up there got
01:34really good value for money from really. But I think from back to front it was great. I
01:41thought Verbruggen and Van Gecken defensively were really good for Brighton. Obviously Van
01:47Gecken was up against Erling Haal and had another physical battle with him again that
01:54day and spoke afterwards about how he kept taking knocks but kept coming back. But that's
02:01the type of game that he enjoys.
02:05And then you've got Believer in midfield as well. I thought he was really good. It was
02:09a shame he just couldn't quite convert that chance at the end. He did everything right.
02:15He made the break into midfield, arrived at the box at just the right time but just couldn't
02:21quite find the finish. But yeah, all in all I thought it was a really good performance
02:27and importantly for Brighton the point keeps them well in the hunt for the Champions League
02:32places. So they're seventh in the table. They're one point behind the fifth place team which
02:39is where the Champions League qualifications will probably drop down to this year. So they're
02:44very much in the hunt. They've got nine Premier League matches to go once we get the international
02:48break out of the way. So very much all to play for into the quarter-finals of the FA
02:53Cup as well. So yeah, pretty positive. Probably should have got the win.
02:58Yes, well you say that there. Post-matcher, Malby manager Fabian Zola admitted he was
03:02happy with the performance but not the result of the Etihad. What do you make of his comments,
03:06Sam? Does it show how far Brighton have come under the German that a draw against arguably
03:10one of the best teams the Premier League has ever seen is considered a disappointment?
03:14Well, it absolutely does. Yeah, it just goes to show the form that Brighton are in and
03:18obviously just as you say just how far they've come in recent seasons that that can be seen
03:23as a disappointing result because obviously Man City, the champions, have been exceptional
03:30for years and this season obviously they have struggled. So Brighton obviously went there.
03:35I think we predicted wins in last week's podcast and they could have won it and probably as
03:40Dara mentioned probably should have with them some of the chances they had but then
03:43Man City hit the post as well. So all in all we can say 2-0 is a good result and it keeps
03:48Brighton well in the hunt for those Champions League places. But when Herzog was asked about
03:53the big chances, especially the Believers one, did he think, he was asked if he thought
03:58Brighton would win the game and he said no because the ball wasn't in. I didn't think
04:01about that. First of all, we have to put in the, we have to score and obviously had two
04:06or three really big chances to find the winner but in the end they don't have to
04:10complain. It's about reflecting, analysing what small margins they have to improve and then see
04:14what they can do better next time. And in terms of the result, it's the first time Brighton
04:19have actually got a point at the Etihad. So that's obviously a really kind of big positive
04:25as well. I think from the game to obviously just show kind of how far they've come this season.
04:29But Herzog didn't really get kind of too drawn in on that. He's not a big fan of statistics and
04:34he doesn't want to chase individual records or anything like that. So it's just about team
04:37performance and kind of playing to the next level. And he thought the performance was really
04:42impressive and they showed their style and showed they can compete with every team in the league,
04:47especially in the second half, he said. So I think he had lots of reasons to be to be positive,
04:51even if they thought they should have won the game. Absolutely. One potential negative was
04:56Tarek Lemte was due to return from suspension on Saturday, but was not even in the Brighton
04:59squad at the Etihad. Do we know why the Ghana international was absent, Darren? Is it something
05:04that Seagulls supporters should be worried about?
05:07It's a little bit unclear at this stage, but I guess with his track record of injuries that he's
05:12had over the years at Brighton, it probably could be a concern. It seemed to be an ankle,
05:17a foot or ankle injury that he picked up in training prior to the match. And it's unclear
05:23at this stage how serious that is, but hopefully it will clear up during the international break.
05:30All Herzog said after the match was that it's a bigger issue than Solly March's latest injury. So
05:36Solly March is out with another knock. But yeah, it is a concern because Joel Veldman is still
05:42struggling. The other recognised right back at Brighton, he's still out with a foot and ankle
05:47injury issue of his own. So if both of them are unavailable to face Forrest,
05:52then that does leave them a little bit short. Jack Kinchelwood can obviously fill in
05:57a right back that he does very well. But yeah, there's a bigger picture of Lamptey. I think he's
06:04out of contract this summer. So the club have got to make a decision. He's had such a bad track
06:09record with injuries since he arrived at Brighton. I think it's about three million they paid for him
06:17from Chelsea in 2020. And he always looks as though he could, you know, be a great player.
06:25And he has sort of a little run in the team where he looks so good and then injury just knock him
06:30back. So he's never really been able to get into a rhythm at Brighton. Joel Veldman's extended his
06:37contract, but there hasn't been any talk about Tarek Lamptey's anything on what's his future
06:43hold. So yeah, it's going to be an interesting decision what happens in the summer. He was
06:47linked to Ajax last January, but I think because of the injuries to Estupinan and Veldman, he was
06:54the only fit full-back. So that move sort of fell through. So yeah, big call to make on Tarek
07:01Lamptey this summer. Yeah, absolutely. Watch this space. The upcoming international window means
07:06Brighton and Am Not in action until their home FA Cup tie against Nottingham Forest on the 28th of
07:11March, which is a Friday. So what better time to reflect on how have been seasons so far, Sam?
07:15I'm going to give you the easy task of picking out what's gone so right for Brighton this season.
07:19Plenty to choose from. What have your highlights been so far from this excellent campaign?
07:24Yeah, as you say, there's plenty to choose from, really. Some that just stick out in my mind at
07:27the moment is that FA Cup win at Newcastle. Obviously, recently, that was really, really
07:33up there with one of the best results of the season. It didn't look likely, especially as
07:37Fabian Scheer seemed to score the winner really deep into the game, into injury time. And then
07:42obviously, disallowed, went to extra time, Brighton won it and progressed through to the
07:45next round. And to win it at St James' Park in that style was really impressive.
07:49Brilliant goal by Danny Welbeck to kind of underline his superb season,
07:53which is one of the big things that's gone right this season for Brighton.
07:57You can also look at the double header over Chelsea, which Brighton won both games at home
08:03with obviously that Matoma goal in the second of the two wins. That's one of the top moments
08:08of the season. Probably will go down as the goal of the season, or at least one of the goals of
08:12the season. The 3-2 comeback win over Spurs, obviously earlier on in the season, where it
08:17looked very unlikely when they were 2-0 down at halftime and they came back and won 3-2 at the
08:22Amex. That was a really, really good day. That was another loss. Another kind of dramatic moment
08:28was the Matt O'Reilly's last minute winner over Man City on his return from injury.
08:34Obviously, you had that Jal Pedro last minute penalty against Fulham recently as well.
08:39But I think just in terms of what's gone right this season, Hazard has just kind of shown
08:42his ability to tweak things when things aren't going so right. There has been some times in
08:46the season where Brighton have struggled and they've had a number of games where they've
08:50not been able to kind of show their best form and then to get the results and they've dropped
08:53points in games they're expected to win. But they've just bounced back so brilliantly.
08:57None more so than obviously that 7-0 at Nottingham Forest and they really haven't looked back since
09:02then. And just obviously this performance, obviously at Man City we've seen recently and
09:07just a number of wins they've had in a row just goes to show kind of how, kind of the team spirit
09:13and the kind of the style of play that Hazard's bringing in. I think everyone's really buying
09:17into that at the moment and we've seen some brilliant kind of performances from his signings
09:21he's brought in, especially Georginio Rutter and Janko Wiminter as well. There's still so
09:27much more to come from obviously Mats Vefa, Kadioglu, O'Reilly have all been hampered by
09:32injury. Obviously, lots more to come from Diego Gomez, who's looked brilliant in the little
09:38glimpses we've seen of him so far. Brian Gruder and Kashin as well, we've obviously not seen too
09:43much of but plenty more to come. I just think, yeah, lots of really positive signs from Brighton
09:50this season and it's really good obviously as a journalist and for all the fans as well and I
09:55think it does really bode well with the squad depth they've got at the club really and it's
10:01definitely an exciting time to be involved with Brighton. Conversely, Deron, what do you think
10:05has been Albin's biggest disappointment so far this season? I think the game at Forest will
10:09probably get mentioned but at this stage where could they improve and are there any major concerns
10:14considering how well they've done so far this season? The injuries, yeah, the injuries have
10:19just been a huge concern for me for reporting on Brighton and you know for Herzela, for the fans
10:27as well. They just keep picking up so many of these muscular injuries and whether that's the
10:33training methods, Herzela has spoken in the past about the adaptation process that these players
10:38have to go through to get up to speed for the Premier League and a lot of these players that
10:43arrived in the summer came from different leagues where they're perhaps adapting to what they need
10:49to do in the Premier League and they brought in at the start of the season, it was Dr Florian Fab,
10:55they paid 250 grand to bring him in from Eintracht Frankfurt where he had a track record of dealing
11:03with the players in the Bundesliga and they had the fewest muscular injuries in the whole of the
11:08Bundesliga and he was brought in to help Herzela manage his squad and to reduce these injuries but
11:17as yet it hasn't worked and these injuries have all helped, you know, that was a massive factor
11:25in their big defeat against Nottingham Forest and when they've got their squad back you're now
11:31starting to see the benefits of it now, now that they're starting to come back, they've been on
11:35this run and that's been helped that they're just getting their better players fitter and that
11:40they're available for selection and there's more to come back the likes of Matt O'Reilly, he hasn't
11:46got going yet as Sam mentioned, Kadioglu as well, I think he's going to be great once he's fit
11:52but yeah it's the injuries and defensively I think they've conceded 42 in the Premier League and only
11:57Aston Villa with 45 have conceded more in the top 10. Obviously the Forest scoreline
12:02didn't help but they struggled with the high line initially and as Sam said they tweaked that a bit
12:07so yeah they struggled defensively but for me the injuries have been a massive part of the problem
12:13that they need to really get a grip of. We will take a short break now but when we return we
12:20will turn our attention to Crawley Town and there is a lot to talk about this week at Crawley Town.
12:25Welcome back to part two and Crawley Town have bid farewell to manager Rob Elliott after Saturday's
12:30dispiriting 5-1 defeat at Huddersfield Town. The former Charlton and Newcastle keeper took over
12:35the Reds in October following Scott Lindsay's departure to MK Don's. Elliott who joined from
12:39Gateshead only won six games in his 31 games in charge of all competitions losing 18 of them.
12:46Mark would you make the decision to remove him? I don't think it's that much of a surprise but is
12:51it a surprise that the board took so long to make that decision after the debacle at Huddersfield?
12:56Yeah it was really because yeah I think we were all expecting that corner flag picture from the
13:02club on their socials sort of like on Saturday night, no not Saturday night it might have been
13:07a bit too soon but certainly Sunday or Monday you were expecting it. It would get on to the
13:12game later but it was so bad that and it just looked all bereft of ideas, tactical now or
13:20anything like that and you just thought well this has got to be it now but as it as the week went
13:25on you thought all right okay maybe they're not getting rid of him maybe they're giving them a
13:27chance against Bristol Rovers at home. Bristol Rovers the only team to have a worse result than
13:31Crawley on Saturday but then yeah last night it all came out that yeah he's been sacked.
13:37Louis Storey's in now as interim manager with Anthony Sweeney helping him out. Yeah just very
13:44odd timing. It doesn't give those interim, it doesn't give Louis Storey long to prepare for
13:52the Bristol Rovers game and what was happening on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday you just think
13:57and most of the day Wednesday it just seemed all very, very strange but I'll let you say no
14:04surprise at all and I think me and Sam were messaging last night and just saying the Cambridge
14:09game that was the obvious time to get rid of him. Not get rid of him that sounds horrible and
14:14disrespectful but you know what I mean. Part ways with him because that was a particularly bad
14:21bad day at the office as well losing 2-0 at home to relegation rivals so
14:25yeah very, very strange timing and it doesn't yeah it doesn't sort of set the week up well
14:29in preparation for what is really last chance saloon. If they don't get a win Saturday
14:35you have to say that. I mean most people think that's it anyway but if they don't get a win
14:39Saturday that is it and probably the final nail in the coffin. Where did things go wrong for
14:44Elliott Sam? Much has been made of his tactical inflexibility and his poor substitutions but to
14:49be fair to him he was hampered by a lengthy injury list. Yeah he certainly was. I mean just to start
14:55with it was almost an impossible job from the start really because obviously Scott Lindsay did
14:59an incredible job with the group of players that he had to get promoted to league one. Pretty much
15:05all of them had left by the time Rob Elliott took over so it's a real difficult situation. Obviously
15:12things weren't exactly great at that time and he was given obviously a big task to come in and try
15:18and steady the ship with this new group of players to obviously try and get them to understand his
15:22way of playing but I think the main problem for him is he's quite stubborn in the sense that he
15:27didn't want to change things too much. He wasn't the best at making substitutes at the right times
15:32and he obviously went horribly wrong on a couple of occasions but obviously with a record of six
15:37wins in 31 games it's not great at all. I think as Mark mentioned in his opinion piece it does give
15:43Kevin Betsy run for his money which is not the kind of comparison you want to be having as a
15:47quarter-time manager really but I think it's fair to say Elliott's job was much tougher circumstances
15:52than in Betsy's to be fair as I've mentioned. He's a young inexperienced manager coming up from the
15:58National League with a squad of young and inexperienced players really. We've all been
16:03thrown together in the summer and it was always going to be a huge kind of task especially when
16:09you consider the the budget of some of the clubs in league one and the stature of some of these
16:14clubs obviously in Birmingham and Wigan, Wrexham just to name a few. So it was almost an impossible
16:20job from the outset and as you mentioned Matt injuries have been a real problem to some key
16:25players. Josh Flynn's been out for most of the season after starting so well. Armando Couturne
16:30has missed quite a lot. Toby Malarkey, Jeremy Kelly, Harry Forster all missing at kind of key
16:35stages of the season which left Elliott with very few options. So yeah you obviously don't want to
16:42make too many excuses for him but yeah I think he was dealt with a really bad hand and hopefully
16:49he can still make a good success of himself as a manager somewhere else. Yeah absolutely. In the
16:54meantime Louis Story will take control of the squad as interim head coach with Anthony Sweeney
16:59supporting him as interim assistant head coach. Mark do you have any idea if the pair will see
17:03out the rest of the season or will Wagner look to make a quick permanent appointment and on that
17:08permanent appointment who have the bookmakers made favourite? I think I can probably guess who they've
17:12made the favourite. What have they said? Well to your first question I don't know if it's
17:18going to be a short appointment of Louis Story and Anthony Sweeney but I get the impression
17:25they... I had a conversation with somebody at the club a while ago and it was when Scott Lindsay
17:31got sacked from MK Dons and I said it seems like a bizarre time and they said oh it could be a
17:39good time because you can get someone in, see out the rest of the season and then they're all
17:43set up. They've got their regime in already and they can get set up and go straight into the summer
17:48and then really implement what they want and stuff. So from that conversation I'm
17:55getting the impression that there could be a permanent appointment but that person coming in
18:00do they want a relegation on their CV? I mean it cracks me up when I see that phrase do they want
18:06that on their CV? Who's going to put a relegation on their CV? Does anyone actually knock up a CV
18:10and say oh yeah I got relegated with Crawley Town? So yeah but yeah would they want that on
18:17their record? I don't know but again I always say it's a really good challenge for someone.
18:23For that someone though I don't think it's going to be Scott Lindsay. He is the favourite with the
18:27bookies at the moment. He's four to six favourable with Bet Victor and yeah I wrote an opinion piece
18:33when he was left MK Don's just saying I can't see it. You may want it but you can't see it.
18:40It wasn't an overly happily married happy marriage between Lindsay and Wagmey and the owners. I don't
18:45think that anyone can be married for Wagmey for too long but considering everything that's going
18:50on. But yeah one it would cost him a lot of money because the pay packet he would have got at MK
18:58Don's would have far outweighed what he'd got at Crawley Town. I just can't see it happening and
19:05does it always work when a legend comes back? Look at Kevin Keegan, Kenny Daglish, people like that.
19:11It doesn't always work so but other names in the mix with the bookies. Ian Everett, the former
19:16Bolton manager. Mike Williamson has suddenly come to the fore a little bit there. Scott Lindsay
19:22absolutely battered in the playoff campaign last year. John Brady, the former Northampton manager.
19:28Ritchie Barker, Charlie Barker's dad. He's been at Crawley before. Didn't have a particularly great
19:33time and then you got likes of Ryan Mason, Nigel Atkins. Someone a name I know Darren's done a
19:41story on it but Adam Hinshelwood. I'd love to see Adam Hinshelwood given. He sort of fits the profile
19:46of what Wagmey always looked for. Young manager, done well in the National League,
19:51in the lower leagues and that and he would be a cheaper appointment. But yeah lots of names there.
19:59I would happily eat a hat live on this podcast if Scott Lindsay is made the next permanent manager
20:05of Crawley Town. But yeah plenty of interesting names but yeah I'd love to see someone like Adam
20:11Hinshelwood come in but I'm sure the fans would want somebody with a bit of experience and a bit
20:16of League Two, League One now coming in. Yes I think that is what they need isn't it? Well only
20:21its last game as Crawley Town manager as we mentioned proved to be the 5-1 defeat at managerless
20:26Huddersfield Town on Saturday. The Reds found themselves 3-0 down after just 16 minutes and
20:31four behind inside half an hour with Adi Yemo hitting a late consolation strike for the visitors.
20:37Not great Mark I think it's safe to say. What did you make of it? It was as bad as it gets. It was
20:43the first 45 minutes was some of the worst football by a professional football club I've ever seen.
20:50It is that strong. I don't think I'm being too over the top with that. I always remember Mark
20:56Wright's debut, league debut not his FA Cup substitution appearance but his league debut
21:02against Harrogate and it was one of the worst performances I'd seen by a player. This was that
21:09times 10 because 10 or 11. The defence was all over the place. Huddersfield they just got a new
21:15manager. They got a little bit of a new manager bounce but they sensed blood and they just went
21:20for it. It all just came off for them but they were very much helped with Crawley Town. I can't
21:26remember which goal it was. It was a header from a corner but what caused the corner was I think
21:33I can't remember was it Ben Radcliffe? I think Ben Radcliffe tried to key the ball and he just hit
21:37it into one of his own players back of his head and it went off for the corner and then they scored
21:42from it and it just absolutely summed everything up. It was shocking. It was absolutely shocking.
21:48They did improve in the second half and they did score a really good goal at the end with
21:52Adi Adeyemo but Huddersfield had really taken their foot off the gas second half as a training
21:57session for them. It was just awful and that's why it's so surprising how long it's taken since that
22:05day. That game just seemed like the culmination of everything that's gone wrong in the last couple
22:10of months and it all just happened on that pitch in 45 minutes. Most people, including myself,
22:16were expecting some kind of announcement on Sunday or Monday but yeah, awful, awful display of
22:21football. Rob Elliott was right to be angry and ashamed and he apologised to the fans afterwards.
22:29Well yeah, that leaves them 12 points from League One safety with nine games to go.
22:34A bit of a damning indictment there from Mark Sam about that performance. Is there any glimmer of
22:39hope for Crawley or has that result in the position they find themselves in, being managerless,
22:43well and truly extinguished, any dreams of staying up for the Reds? Yeah, I think it's extremely
22:48unlikely. When you look at the table now, 12 points adrift. They've obviously got Bristol Rovers up
22:53next who are obviously the nearest to them in terms of safety so that could be cut down to nine
23:00points but then even then it's still a huge mountain to climb. Obviously with nine games
23:06to go I think Crawley would have to win every single game and hope that all the teams around
23:11them lose. I know they have got a couple of teams around them and whatnot but it will take a miracle
23:18I think at this point, especially if they do decide to bring in a new manager, them trying to
23:25get their own style of play in and then try to embed that in. It's all going to be a tricky time
23:32for everyone involved really so I think they just need to kind of steady the ship, ready for next
23:36season which is most likely going to be in League Two. So I feel like that needs to be the aim now,
23:41make sure you're fully prepared for this new season, that it doesn't get any worse than it is
23:45now. Get a long-term manager in that can do a really good job with obviously the players he's
23:51already got and hopefully he can bring in some new ones as well. Yeah, absolutely and we're going to
23:54kind of roll the score predictions and the preview all into one. Mark, they've got Bristol Rovers as
23:58we mentioned this Saturday and they were battered, much like Crawley, they were battered by Lincoln
24:03on Saturday. What do you reckon the score is going to be and do we have any idea
24:10of what kind of set-up there's going to be or performance that the Reds might put in? Do we have
24:14an indication of what these interim bosses might do? Well, the fact that they are part of
24:20Rob Elliott's team, I can't imagine you'll see huge changes but what everybody will want to see
24:25is just a reaction from the players from last week's debacle as we called it earlier. If they've
24:30got any professional pride, they will want to put in a performance this week and they'll be at home,
24:35there'll be a big crowd but like you say, Bristol Rovers are in just as bad a state in some aspects
24:40with recent results. They could really be dragged into it and if Crawley beat them then Burton will
24:44send blood and you think they can chase down Bristol Rovers. So, I think we'll see a new
24:51manager bounce and I think it will be one or two-one maybe, a tight victory but it will be
24:58hopefully a really good battling performance that puts a bit of pride back into the club.
25:03I think that's what Crawley fans want at the moment, isn't it Sam? How do you see
25:06this going? Yeah, exactly that. A bit of fight because that's obviously not what they've seen
25:12in recent weeks and there's been some really, really poor performances. You think of that
25:17Cambridge one especially which is obviously a must-win game so they're going to be looking
25:21for a good home performance to recover from a really difficult period but I think it will be
25:25a one-all draw because obviously Bristol Rovers will be looking to avoid defeat as well for the
25:30first edition they're in. Yeah, they will do. Darren, what do you reckon? I think this might be
25:34quite a nervy, cagey game with two teams low on confidence. What do you reckon?
25:38Yeah, I was going to say exactly that. They're both really low on confidence and
25:44yeah, let's just say I think it's going to be tight but let's say Crawley will sneak it.
25:49It's like one-nil.
25:52One thing I can guarantee, it won't be a spectacle.
25:57Well, as long as they come home with three points that's all that matters at this stage,
26:00isn't it? It's the best of the club to Crawley Town this weekend. Thank you very much,

26:12and Freeview channel 262. Mark, I'm right in thinking you're speaking to the new interim
26:16manager today? I am indeed, yeah. I should be speaking to Louis Story in the next sort of half
26:21hour or so. So hopefully, yeah, check out Sussex World for the video interview I'm going to do with
26:25him and see what answers we can get in terms of length of how long he's expecting to be there
26:30and if we can expect any changes on Saturday. A comprehensive interview is what it sounds like.
26:35It's going to be off the back of that and I know that it will be. Thank you very much for
26:37listening and or watching and we will see you all next week.
