A new Taiwan-Philippines-U.S. trans-pacific submarine cable system has arrived at its Taiwanese landing point in Taitung. The cable is set to come online in May. Taiwan relies on submarine cables for almost all its internet connectivity, and has experienced coms blackouts in the past due to the cables being damaged by China-linked ships.

00:07The undersea cable is more than 13,000 kilometers long and stretches from California to Guam
00:13to Taiwan's Dawu and Taitung and to the Philippines.
00:16It should go online in May.
00:18Taiwan is set to have 16 international cables by the end of the year.
00:22Almost all its internet connections come from these cables, currently relying on 14 international
00:28lines.
00:29Some cables have been damaged multiple times by China-linked ships, cutting off communications
00:34and raising concerns about Taiwan's security.
00:36If more international cables are built, the chance of being isolated will be smaller.
00:47This is a way to increase our capacity.
