00:25Janab-e-Alaikum, welcome to you once again.
00:27Iqrar Bhai will introduce you to today's institution.
00:30I have personally been there and I am a witness of their work.
00:34In what way they are doing a great job.
00:36Iqrar Bhai will introduce you, Inshallah.
00:38Yes, absolutely.
00:39We are very thankful.
00:40Today the people who have come in our segment
00:43are representing Memon Medical Institute.
00:46Right now the situation is that there are 225 beds.
00:51There are 225 hospital beds.
00:53Approximately 3.5 lakh people have benefited from it.
00:59I will introduce the guests.
01:01We have with us Mr. Mohammad Ijaz Hussain.
01:03Sir, thank you so much.
01:04You are the honorable chairman of MMI.
01:07And Brigadier Dr. Malik Waqar Ahmed Awan.
01:10Sir, thank you very much.
01:11You are the chief executive officer of MMI.
01:14Mr. Ijaz, we will start with you.
01:16MMI started in 2010.
01:19And again, what were the objectives at that time?
01:21Who thought about it?
01:23What was the basis on which it was understood
01:26that such an institution is needed?
01:28We want you to tell us about the journey.
01:30The journey started from here.
01:32The Sindh government was auctioning a half-built hospital.
01:36Really?
01:37And at that time the finance minister was Hafiz Sheikh of Sindh.
01:42So, he gave it in the newspaper.
01:45So, when I read the Sunday newspaper,
01:47I spoke to my elder brother first.
01:50Then I spoke to two or three friends.
01:52That we will buy it.
01:54So, everyone agreed.
01:57After three days, we held a meeting
02:01at the office of a trustee, Mr. Ibrahim Qasim.
02:04And there we set up a foundation.
02:08And we decided on a vision
02:11that there should be such a hospital
02:13in which everyone can be treated.
02:18Because in Pakistan and Karachi,
02:20the charitable hospitals that are built,
02:22there is a big problem
02:24that we ourselves create a class difference.
02:27This is for the poor and this is for the rich.
02:31We said that there should be a place for both.
02:34Both should get the same kind of treatment.
02:36Both should get the same kind of service.
02:39Because being poor is not a sin.
02:42So, we said that we will make such a facility
02:46which is a seven-star facility.
02:48Where my treatment is also there,
02:50and the treatment of my employees is also there.
02:53So, we ended the class difference.
02:55This was our vision.
02:57This is the most important pillar of our vision.
03:02And we said that we have to prove this.
03:05And everybody, all our 15 founder trustees,
03:08they all supported us.
03:10We set up a foundation.
03:12We bought it.
03:13We worked on it for seven years.
03:15We made the whole facility new.
03:17And with a new vision,
03:19we made it a five-star, seven-star facility.
03:22And we started working on it.
03:25Today, Mashallah, there are 225 beds.
03:27And by the end of this year,
03:29it will be 500 plus beds.
03:31More than double.
03:33More than double.
03:35And secondly,
03:37we thought that there are so many NGOs in Karachi.
03:41There are NPO hospitals
03:43who are doing free treatment.
03:45But one thing was that
03:47what they were doing,
03:49it was not like that.
03:51Everything was being treated.
03:53We said, let's focus on this.
03:55We brought the focus charity banner.
03:58Under that, we did the first program
04:01for knees and knees.
04:03Today, we have reached 1400,
04:05which is a world record.
04:07We have given knee and hip surgery
04:09to 1400 people for free.
04:12And the poor people
04:14who could not afford it.
04:16Yes, it is a very expensive treatment.
04:18And the biggest thing is that
04:20not all hospitals can do this surgery.
04:22Not all primary care hospitals
04:24can do this surgery.
04:26So for that, we requested surgeons
04:28from Europe and America.
04:30They came there.
04:32They came here and did free of cost work.
04:34Then we called a surgeon from the UK
04:36and put him on a permanent salary,
04:38a very heavy salary.
04:40We wanted a poor man
04:42to get a good implant,
04:44get a good doctor,
04:46and work in a good facility.
04:48Looking at his success,
04:50we kept increasing the program.
04:52And our slogan became very famous.
04:54Donors also liked it a lot
04:56because we had four criteria for it.
04:58Focus charity means
05:00it should be visible,
05:02it should be doable,
05:04it should be measurable,
05:06and it should bring a change
05:08If there is a program
05:10based on these criteria,
05:12then we will do it,
05:14otherwise we will not do it.
05:16So we kept adding.
05:18We did cochlear implant surgeries.
05:20After that we did cornea transplant.
05:22We are doing it on breast cancer.
05:24There is a special awareness program
05:26going on on breast cancer.
05:28It is a long term.
05:30Every program is going on long term.
05:32We did not do it to stop it.
05:34It is like
05:36after doing cornea transplant
05:38for 273 years,
05:40we do not get patients.
05:42We have funding and everything.
05:44We do not have patients.
05:46We have almost
05:48cleared a disease.
05:50In Focus Charity,
05:52we are doing spleen surgery
05:54for children with thalassemia
05:56whose spleen swells.
05:58We are also
06:00working on retina detachment
06:02and
06:04we are doing screening
06:06for newborn babies.
06:08There are many diseases
06:10which people were ignorant about.
06:12They did not know about it.
06:14No one is focusing on it
06:16and doing it.
06:18We have changed
06:20our direction.
06:22You are explaining
06:24everything with interest.
06:26He is very passionate.
06:28It was a pleasure to listen to you.
06:30When a patient comes to MMI,
06:32how is he received?
06:34What are the
06:36departments?
06:40Mr. Waqar will tell you.
06:42Can you tell us
06:44about the mechanisms
06:46and procedures
06:48inside the hospital?
06:50How is it treated?
06:52Can you tell us about it?
06:54Thank you very much
06:56for inviting me.
06:58Mehman Medical Institute
07:00is a tertiary care hospital.
07:02When we say
07:04tertiary care hospital,
07:06it means that
07:08there are all kinds of treatments.
07:10A patient either
07:12comes for walking
07:14which is reported by OPD
07:16and the consultant
07:18does the investigations
07:20related to his disease
07:22and if it is necessary
07:24to admit him,
07:26he is admitted.
07:28In emergency,
07:30due to an accident
07:32or an accident
07:34or at night,
07:36we have all kinds
07:38of treatments.
07:40Mainly surgery,
07:42medicine, gynecology
07:44and obstetrics are the main subjects.
07:46In medicine,
07:48we have nephrology, pulmonology,
07:50neurology, cardiology.
07:52All types of departments are there.
07:54In surgery,
07:56we have neurosurgery,
07:58cardiac surgery,
08:00general surgery, colorectal surgery,
08:02laparoscopic surgery.
08:04Please tell us
08:06which areas
08:08do the patients come from?
08:10What type of people
08:12do they come from?
08:14Alhamdulillah, all types of people
08:16whether they are
08:18downtrodden, underprivileged
08:20or rich.
08:22Our team has
08:24built confidence
08:26level so much
08:28that all types of people
08:30come.
08:32Our biggest
08:34mission
08:36is
08:38accessible
08:40and affordable
08:42quality healthcare
08:44to all, irrespective of
08:46their caste, creed, color, religion
08:48or ability to pay.
08:50So, all types of people
08:52come there.
08:54If they can pay,
08:56then they pay.
08:58If they can't pay,
09:00the hospital supports them
09:02to 100% level
09:04that they get sponsored
09:06for the consultants,
09:08for the hospital.
09:10Every patient is paying
09:12whether from his own pocket
09:14or from a friend.
09:16But the treatment
09:18is 100% equal.
09:20Right, sir.
09:22As you said, your vision was
09:24to get yourself treated
09:26by the doctors there.
09:28Now that you have
09:30decided to go there,
09:32are you satisfied with
09:34the services and expertise
09:36there?
09:38Definitely, I am satisfied
09:40but as they say,
09:42it's better to do better.
09:44If we stop there and
09:46become satisfied,
09:48then it's better to
09:50continue this journey.
09:52Sky is the limit.
09:54We have to push it
09:56further.
09:58Our new operation
10:00theatres
10:02are nowhere
10:04in Pakistan.
10:06We have brought
10:08new technology for
10:10infection-free theatres.
10:12There are 6 theatres
10:14worth 2 million Euros.
10:16We had to go to Finland,
10:18Sweden, Italy
10:20with the entire team
10:22for the learning phase.
10:24If we do something,
10:26it's best to do it
10:28or else not to do it.
10:30It's best to do it
10:32or else not to do it.
10:34I want to know about
10:36the financial model.
10:38Who are the people
10:40who support you?
10:42How many people
10:44benefit from this?
10:46How many people
10:48pay for their own treatment?
10:50Almost 60-65%
10:52of people
10:54pay for their own treatment.
10:56Secondly,
10:58we have a
11:00costing formula.
11:02If something costs
11:04Rs. 1 lakh,
11:06we charge Rs. 1,05,000.
11:08Okay.
11:10Wow.
11:12It's 5% of the cost.
11:145%.
11:16Our idea was that
11:18the middle class
11:20who can't go to
11:22welfare or have money
11:24should also be affordable.
11:26The rich can go anywhere.
11:28That's right.
11:30The middle class
11:32can't go to the middle class.
11:34We don't have VIP customers.
11:36We have middle class, lower middle class
11:38and poor people.
11:40Right.
11:42That's why there are very few private rooms
11:44in our hospital.
11:46We have a general ward.
11:48So that people can afford it.
11:50As far as
11:52funding is concerned,
11:54people come to see
11:56our work.
11:58That's why
12:00we don't put up many banners.
12:02We don't do much marketing.
12:04We don't do
12:06as much marketing
12:08as we should.
12:10People complain to me
12:12that so many people are sending money.
12:14That's what I was thinking.
12:16It's such a good work.
12:18We say that
12:20there should be marketing for the work
12:22and not for the demand.
12:24That's right.
12:26When the work is good,
12:28people come and give money.
12:30Word of mouth.
12:32I did fundraising in America
12:34and in the UAE.
12:36Thank God,
12:38we raised a huge amount of money.
12:40Alhamdulillah.
12:42MashaAllah,
12:44your owner,
12:46Salman Iqbal,
12:48he gave
12:50a $300,000
12:52mammography machine.
12:54There are people like that.
12:56When he came for the first visit,
12:58he said, what do you want?
13:00I said, I want this.
13:02There are a lot of people like that.
13:04I talked about two theaters.
13:06Six theaters were donated.
13:08Zindabad.
13:10You are talking about 2 million euros.
13:12Zindabad.
13:14Sir, again,
13:16do you want to say anything
13:18to the people of Pakistan
13:20about MMI?
13:22I will just say
13:24that all institutions are good.
13:26Everyone is doing a good job
13:28for the people.
13:30The population of Karachi,
13:32there are a lot of immigrants
13:34from the rest of the country.
13:36The more work is done,
13:38the less it is.
13:40But it is Allah's grace
13:42that the work of MMI
13:44has become a role model.
13:46If people follow it,
13:48I think
13:50the health standards
13:52will improve a lot.
13:54Thank you so much.
13:56Since you have been there,
13:58I would like to add something.
14:00You have visited.
14:02I will definitely come after Eid.
14:04I promise to make a list and go.
14:06Inshallah.
14:08I have visited every corner of it.
14:10I came before Ramadan.
14:12I am also surprised
14:14that people should know more
14:16about this institution.
14:18By word of mouth,
14:20we have a very good patient
14:22flow.
14:24I have seen it with my own eyes.
14:26Our work is our marketing.
14:28There is no doubt about it.
14:30Again, I am a witness
14:32that the patient's inflow
14:34is very high.
14:36This institution should be run
14:38in a better and bigger way.
14:40For this, I request all of you
14:42to do your part.
14:44Inshallah.
14:46There will be no better days
14:48to do this work.
14:50Thank you very much.
14:52Let's applaud.
14:54We will come after the break.
