Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's diplomatic approach to the Ukraine-Russia conflict. Tharoor, who initially criticised India's stance in February 2022, now acknowledges the effectiveness of Modi's policy. He notes that Modi can engage with both Ukrainian and Russian leaders, positioning India to potentially contribute to peace efforts in ways few other countries can.

00:00Congress MP Shashi Tharoor in awe of Modi's diplomacy.
00:04Tharoor has lauded Modi government position on Ukraine, that's the story at this hour.
00:09Shashi Tharoor says, wiping egg off my face.
00:13Congress MP says, strongly slam Modi-Ukraine policy.
00:16Modi can hug Putin and Zelensky says Shashi Tharoor.
00:19Modi can help in lasting peace.
00:21Very few can do what India is doing, says Shashi Tharoor, in face of the Prime Minister.
00:30The parliamentary debate who actually criticized the Indian position at the
00:36time back in February 22, on the well-worn grounds that Espen will
00:40understand because he and I talked about all this in my UN days, that there was a
00:44violation of the UN Charter, that there had been a violation of the principle of
00:49inviolability of borders, of the sovereignty of a member state namely
00:53Ukraine, and we had always stood for the admissibility of the use of force to
00:57settle international disputes and all of those principles I said had been
01:01violated by one party and we should have condemned it. Well, a couple of years
01:05later, three years later, it does look like I'm the one with egg on my face
01:08because clearly the policy has meant that India has actually a Prime Minister
01:13who can hug both the President of Ukraine and the President of Moscow two
01:17weeks apart and be accepted in both places and therefore India is in a
01:22position where it can make a difference to a lasting peace if it were so
01:27required in ways that very few countries would be able to was the one person
01:33okay Rahul Gautam has more on that Rahul it's not be with us in fact Rahul I'll
01:40come back to you my colleague getting in those details Tom Verracken of the BJP
01:44with us as well Tom Verracken, Shashi Tharoor in praise of Prime Minister
01:48Narendra Modi's and India's approach as far as the issue of the war is concerned
01:53here how do you respond to it well it's not just about Shashi Tharoor the whole
01:58world at large has seen it that how Prime Minister Modi was able to get into a
02:04situation where he had both the sides negotiating and he could talk peace with
02:10each one of them that was the policy that we have always adopted and I think
02:15under Modi's leadership that this has occurred because normally you're in one
02:20side or the other side now if Shashi Tharoor has realized I think it should
02:25be the realization that the Congress Party should also realize that foreign
02:29policy issues that are being handled by the Prime Minister is absolutely
02:35something that we have not seen earlier and that's an extraordinary effort
02:40that has been recognized by President Trump that's been recognized by the
02:45Italian Prime Minister and the world over it's been accepted and we are we
02:51are ready for peace anywhere in the globe because we have held that peace is
02:57the only way out and that is what the Prime Minister has led from the front so
03:01I think that's very clear Shashi has realized that he's seen the light good
03:05for him and I think if he preaches this to his own party it will do them a lot of
03:12good right I'm going to thank you for joining in with your views on that Tom
03:16Barrakhan of the Bharatiya Janata Party they're talking about how the entire
03:19world is appreciative of this of the policy of India's foreign policy vis-a-vis
03:25Ukraine and Russia Rahul Gautam it comes in now this praise comes in from
03:30Congress MP Shashi Tharoor who's been in fact praising the Modi government and
03:35the Prime Minister himself very often isn't it leaving many in the Congress
03:39extremely uncomfortable well within a month it's the second time when Shashi
03:46Tharoor you know had you know praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier he
03:51said that the Prime Minister visit to the USA and his meeting with Trump is
03:57going to yield fruitful results for the country at that point of time also his
04:02comments led you know you know quite of outrage within the party and party
04:07itself distance you know from the remarks saying that these remarks were made in
04:11personal capacity later on he also defended you know his remarks saying that
04:16I cannot always speak on behalf of political party and whatever I feel you
04:22know good about the incumbent government I would certainly be not hesitating
04:27to speak about it and now again Prime Minister's you know stance on Ukraine
04:32has got has drawn praises from Shashi Tharoor and in fact Mr. Tharoor that said
04:38that he was the only parliamentarian who actually condemned the stand that was
04:43taken by India back in 2022 when when when war broke out between a Ukraine and
04:49Russia in fact said that he has been proved wrong you know by the given stance
04:54and clearly Prime Minister is one person who can actually go and have
04:59Ukrainian Premier and Russian Premier within two weeks apart and still can
05:04have good relationships with both the country so clearly it seems that this
05:09this comment you rightly pointed out will not be going well with Congress
05:12leaders and you can expect that at least Kerala leaders would not be
05:16impressed with these with these remarks absolutely how they've always been upset
05:23remarks or no remarks many problems as far as the Kerala Congress is concerned
05:27be with us Rahul Gautam coming back to you in a moment from now listening to
05:30Shashi Tharoor once again was the one person in the parliamentary debate who
05:36actually criticized the Indian position at the time back in February 22 on the
05:41well-worn grounds and Espen will understand because he and I talked about
05:44all this in my UN days that there was a violation of the UN Charter that there
05:48had been a violation of the principle of inviolability of borders of the

06:01those principles I said had been violated by one party and we should have
06:05condemned it well a couple of years later three years later it does look
06:09like I'm the one leg on my face because clearly the policy has meant that India
06:13has actually a prime minister who can hug both the president of Ukraine and
06:18the president of Moscow two weeks apart and and be accepted in both places and
06:22therefore India is in a position where it can make a difference to a lasting
