Laremy Tunsil was introduced to media covering the Washington Commanders this week and talked about his time in Houston. Watch Seth Payne and Sean Pendergast react to it here.
Transcript
00:00He met with the media in Washington yesterday.
00:07I don't think he was in he went to the building and visited and but the press conference he
00:12did yesterday looked like it was on a zoom where he was sitting on his front porch.
00:16So I don't know the logistics of his travel but he's he's he's a Washington commander
00:21now and he did a press conference yesterday and he said he said no hard feelings in leaving
00:28Houston.
00:29In this position so what I learned don't take anything personal and it's just strictly just
00:36a business.
00:37And I actually before I left the building I talked to those guys pretty much they're
00:43just trying to keep the young guys together as simple as that.
00:47When I was a when I was a rookie and I would talk to my OG who was Brandon Albert and Jermond
00:53Bushrod and Mike Pouncey they told me it's a young man's game and you know I've seen
00:57it for myself.
00:59You know they drafted some young guys and they hit on every draft pick you know they're
01:03trying to keep those guys together.
01:04So I fully understand like they just paid stingy today.
01:08They just gave that boy that bag.
01:09So I truly understand like it's no hard feelings like at the end of the day it's a business.
01:14You know I mean don't take anything personal there's no hard feelings against the Houston
01:17Texans.
01:18You know I thank them for just put me in this position and I thank you for everything they
01:22did for me and my family and changing my life.
01:24So I get it man.
01:27When I was with Miami I didn't get the courtesy call from Miami you know I kind of woke up
01:31out of my nap and got traded so at least this time I was a little bit different.
01:35Okay so he's talking about when Bill O'Brien traded for him he probably woke up and found
01:40out on Twitter or got some text messages or something like that.
01:43Well remember when he got traded for Miami he had a pretty funny comment about it when
01:47he found out he'd been traded for two first round picks he said I would have traded me
01:51too.
01:52Yeah.
01:53So it was easier probably not to take it personally that time around and everything he said is
01:57true and accurate and I think that's where there was kind of an emotional upheaval in
02:02a good way or it just felt like an emotional cleansing in a lot of ways because so many
02:06people were so tired of Laramie Tunsell's consistent false.
02:12Starts and it's all starting for the entire duration of time he was here he was a league
02:16leader almost every single year but that also it does just financially make sense that when
02:23you pay guys like Derrick Singley when you're probably going to pay guys like Will Anderson
02:27when the Texans are in the situation they're in right now two things can be true one yes
02:32they're going to have to make some tough decisions on veterans and clear some space but you do
02:37get to choose which expensive veterans you do that with and there's some guy an offensive
02:43tackle who's a genuinely if you're as genuinely good as some people want to talk about Laramie
02:49Tunsell which is like a Trent Williams type you don't let those guys go that there's so
02:55there's a little bit to both sides of the issue here with Laramie Tunsell both the fact
03:00that he wasn't a truly great all-around offensive tackle he was a past protection specialist
03:05but then also yeah you cleared almost 20 million dollars off the cap this year you clear way
03:11more than that next year and it does open up things to be able to give guys these future
03:16contracts yeah that was clearly the story that was told to him by D'Amico and Nick that's
03:21very evident is that yeah when he you know if he wanted a reason as to why the reason
03:25because I agree with you as he was laying that out I'm going yeah okay dude as he's
03:30laying that out and him being told that's the reason why they got some young guys they
03:34want to take care of you know I know this I was one of those young guys at one time
03:37when I was in Miami I talked to Brandon Albert he was my OG I'm the OG now blah blah blah
03:42I was thinking the same thing you were I'm like okay the toxic nature of the offensive
03:48line room that we read about with Albert Breer you know it's here in to us now that
03:53this is what Laramie was told it's like no it's probably both it's it's probably maybe
03:58toxic is overstating it a little bit but it's probably both the issue I had with that Albert
04:02Breer statement was that Albert Breer talked about the talk the O-line room having a near
04:08toxic atmosphere but that that doesn't really fill in any details as far as whether it was
04:14Laramie Tunsell's fault whether it was Chris Strouser's fault or Bobby Slowick's fault
04:18so I didn't I didn't really feel comfortable using that as some kind of ammunition against
04:24Laramie Tunsell there's lots of reasons a room can be toxic and it doesn't doesn't like
04:29Breer didn't specifically point out Tunsell necessarily so I don't know exactly what all
04:34that was about and I feel like it's it's a little irresponsible to act like it but I
04:39am not as I was talking about Trent Williams the irony is not lost on me that Trent Williams
04:44forced his way out of Washington DC yeah when you talk about not letting go of a guy who's
04:49as good as Trent Williams Trent Williams sat out an entire season because he flat out hated
04:54the commanders yeah when they were owned by Dan Snyder it's obviously a different environment
04:59there now with the new ownership yep Laramie talked about the penalties he was asked about
05:04the penalties as he should be with his new team that is the one glaring thing at least
05:09on the stat sheet it sticks out about Laramie Tunsell he said he wants to fix that I kind
05:13of just like challenging myself to to find new challenges in my game to get better so
05:18every year I try to find something I could do this but I want to do this better I want
05:22to be known for this you know so I kind of just put that chip on my shoulder by myself
05:25um it's really just me versus me at the end of the day um you know
05:2919 penalties I had last season was unacceptable so that's something I want to address for
05:37sure get that number down or even having none um you know I want to keep growing as a player
05:42honestly as a pass blocker a run blocker it doesn't matter you know I'm always trying
05:47to improve in each of those fields um yeah the always part I guess I would have an issue
05:53with because he hasn't he he never really showed uh all that much interest in being
05:57a good run blocker really until this last year I think he made some improvements by
06:01about midway through the season he looked like oh here we go um I mean the penalties
06:05he's had in his entire career to start working on that he's been he's been amongst the worst
06:10and the the part that's always bothered me about Laramie Tunsell being so good in pass
06:14protection as he is is that he does game the system a little bit in having all those false
06:19starts in pre-snap alignment penalties the other genuinely great pass protectors don't
06:26don't get that many they go back to Trent Williams Trent Williams on average over the
06:29last five years has somewhere between zero to two pre-snap penalties per year it took
06:36me it took me going back through Trent Williams for five years for him to have the same number
06:41in the last five seasons Trent Williams had the same number of pre-snap penalties as Laramie
06:46Tunsell had this season so like Tunsell gets away with hey no big deal if I turn a third
06:54and six into third and eleven because it doesn't show up on my pass protection stats I don't
06:58get marked against it in pass protection but it's it's it's cheating the system a little
07:03bit yeah in a very selfish way and that's where that's what gets annoying to people
07:07it's that the manner in which he would fall start possible and he's just continually stepping
07:15over the line in hurting his team that's that's pure unadulterated selfishness and
07:21there's no other excuse around it that's the part that gets really really old with
07:25family and it was in a number that couldn't be ignored this year you know there was a
07:29four or five instead of Trent Williams getting to you can brush that under the rug when you
07:33get traded to a new team when you have I think it was 12 procedure penalties is the number
07:3719 total penalties because that's the number he just gave out yeah it was 12 false starts
07:43I believe it was two or three illegal formations line it up too deep there was then there was
07:49the illegal man downfield on that Nico screen that would have been a touchdown I know yeah
07:53that one I actually you know what that's where it kind of turned where I started like trying
07:57to give him the benefit of the doubt because he looked genuinely upset at himself for that
08:01it was the first time I remember Larry Tunsell looking like he was genuinely upset that he
08:07had screwed over the entire team look like you care that's the bar instead of right instead
08:11of blaming others yes it was a it was a big moment of progress for him because he's always
08:16working on something yeah one more from Larry Tunsell says he's very excited to block for
08:20Jaden Daniels I could tell you this I damn sure can't wait but he's a baller and it's
08:25just been seeing this this on TV and watching film and it seemed like he's a better dude
08:30to you know just hearing that from a lot of people just around the locker room his teammates
08:37is a good person to bother so I can't wait to make my job a little disappointed he didn't
08:45call it a dog he's not a baller he's a baller not a dog knows a dog who knows it Jaden Daniels
08:54just a baller he's not a dog man not a dog baby don't need no don't need no virtual reality
09:00goggles you know maybe Davis just goes out there and guns it that's right man um maybe
09:06he's around Laramie enough he'll become a dog you know you get in Laramie's orbit right
09:11there you know in his face yeah he'll get he'll he'll draw some dog-like qualities from
09:16Laramie Tunsell I actually I had a horrible horrible dream about Laramie Tunsell a couple
09:21nights ago and I think it was I think it was because I had there's a combination it feels
09:27redundant by the way I had a horrible as opposed to the amazing dreams about Laramie
09:31Tunsell I had had well no I feel guilty about it but I know I woke up and I was kind of
09:36freaked out because I had a dream that Washington was playing in Philadelphia and in Tunsell
09:43was nowhere to be seen it is because he just decided not to play that day so everybody
09:48in the Washington locker room was freaking out trying to figure out what the hell's going
09:52on with Laramie what the hell's going on with Laramie and and so this was playing out
09:57like a movie and I jumped I jump cut to the scene where Laramie is driving over a bridge
10:07in Philadelphia they have many bridges there away from the stadium and he had some staffer
10:13with him who was there with him against his will and Laramie said they were in a convertible
10:20and at one point Laramie said watch this maneuver he actually said that this is all
10:25happening in your dream yes and he goes and he jerks the wheel to the side
10:32like he was 1A turnaround or something but he hits the embankment and they go over the
10:37edge and and as they're going over the edge they have their hands up they they have their
10:44hands up like they're going down a roller coaster and then then then scene cut it goes
10:51to black and I presume that they perished in this movie but it and I felt I woke up
10:58and I was like what the hell am I wishing on people and then I remembered I had put
11:02a gif of Thelma and Louise in a video I did on my YouTube a couple days before that Wow
11:06so I basically put Laramie Tunsell and some staffer into a Thelma and Louise type okay
11:12it's that simple to just weave the themes of certain movies into your dreams I'm just
11:16gonna start putting gifs up of some much more pleasant stuff than that if it's just gonna
11:19find it seep its way into my brain here's my question that is you were laying that out let
11:22me ask you this were you like a third person watching this whole car scene go on or were
11:28you in the back seat it was like I was watching a movie oh yeah I was third person and I was
11:34watching it as if it was a movie or a news report or something because then later they
11:39showed they showed still frame footage caught from traffic cameras yeah and in it this is this
11:46is a symbolic part that I think is related to the false starts in it Laramie as they were
11:53plummeting to their death in this convertible had this huge smile on his face like he was having the
11:58time of his life whereas the staffer was petrified yeah and like clutching the clutching the door only
12:06Laramie had his hands up and it was like this grainy black and white photo but like he like it
12:14was his birthday but the staffer was going down into his watery death so you didn't get to see
12:19exactly what led to the staffer being in the car you just know from your dream that the staffer
12:24was in there against his or her will I vaguely remember yeah some kind of drama or something
12:29where Laramie he'd forgotten something at home or something maybe maybe it was his bright green
12:34gloves yeah yeah he wanted to go get his bright red gloves at home so he had some so he had some
12:40pizzazz on camera decided to go with him yeah oh yeah we should point that out okay the vast
12:49majority of his penalties were pre-snap or were pre-snap penalties he did have a couple of holds
12:55and one of those holds was in the game where he was wearing the bright red gloves against the
12:59opponent's white jersey right that make it extra easy to see that whether or not an offensive lineman
13:04is holding or not he'll probably go with what like bright gold gloves with the with the commanders I
13:09would think he started wearing to his credit again when he started caring about run blocking this
13:15year he was wearing white gloves the rest your whiter black gloves the rest of the year I gotta
13:18tell you like I it was a very deja vu feeling watching these clips I didn't watch the whole
13:23press conference I just went and found the clips you know the two or three that everybody was you
13:27know kind of talking about afterwards and it did remind me that at various times throughout
13:33Laramie Tunsell's careers at Texan I was not happy with Laramie Tunsell for whatever reason I
13:37acknowledge he's a good player and all that but Texan fans can relate to this but it seems like
13:42he would do a press conference and I would start to feel good about him again every time like I
13:47liked him in press conference in this one yesterday I'm like ah I gotta like Laramie
13:54Tunsell he's uh it's his voice yeah he's got a very reassuring voice yeah yeah I remember that I
13:59remember that being my first impression when he met with the Houston media I was like oh this guy
14:03this guy could do voiceovers or something he could definitely speak for an insurance company I would
14:08buy that insurance yes knowing that they're gonna screw me eventually but at the very least Laramie
14:13Tunsell would make me feel good about it up soothing very white voice yes yes for sure when
14:19CJ's feeling about I wonder how CJ is feeling watching clips of Laramie Tunsell blocking for
14:24his new friend Jaden Daniels I wonder how CJ's feeling about all of this yeah he hasn't has
14:30there been a an emoji tweeted out or anything like that's not his game it is he's not it he's
14:35not right right well that but you know I wonder he probably wanted to express something publicly
14:42this is me just guessing yeah if I were CJ Stroud if I put myself hold on a second let me do a
14:46little empathy exercise all right CJ Stroud tries to do right by his teammates and he personally
14:51loves those guys all that he wants to maybe publicly express his feelings about Laramie
14:57Tunsell individually but he also knows that anything he does is going to be hyper scrutinized
15:04yes and that it's a dicey it's a dicey position to be in so I'm guessing that CJ called or texted
15:10Laramie and maybe had a conversation with him but he's he's withheld any kind of public statement
15:15just because you know how those things there's almost nothing he can say that won't be interpreted
15:19is like oh well see CJ's pissed especially the more you leave open to to interpretation if it's
15:26an emoji it's it's the wild wild west you know remember Stefan Diggs when he got a handle almost
15:33perfectly mm-hmm and yet people found ways to act like he was trying to throw shade at the
15:39Bills as he was flat-out saying I love those people I love Josh Allen I love people found a
15:45way to twist that into shade at the Bills now I feel like a hundred percent something you just
15:50said happened which was I feel like they've definitely communicated Laramie and CJ's oh
15:54yeah a hundred percent unless CJ was unless CJ was the one catalyst the knife yeah and I got a
16:01whole new feeling about CJ I you know by the way that's something I learned late in life when
16:06somebody gets fired if you don't reach out to them oftentimes they think that you were the person who
16:12was behind doing that may I reach out to everybody who gets fired yeah I guess I never really thought
16:18of it that way okay so now and so definitely the word the other life lesson there is a so a chief
16:26life lesson for one it's a nice thing to do is to reach out to somebody even if you weren't that
16:30close to him but B if you are the person that did them in I'm sure you reach out oh yeah good
16:35subterfuge Machiavelli if you're gonna play the game go all the way oh yeah
