Will the EU be able to save Radio Free Europe after Trump's funding cuts?

European Union government ministers are discussing ways to keep the pro-democracy media outlet afloat after the Trump administration stopped its grants over the weekend.

00:00EU government ministers debated ways Radio Free Europe could be kept afloat after the
00:07Trump administration announced sweeping cuts to the pro-democracy media outlet over the
00:12weekend.
00:13The Czech Republic, which has hosted Radio Free Europe for 25 years, is leading an EU
00:18push to keep the network alive. Sweden's EU affair minister expressed support for the
00:24initiative on Tuesday.
00:25Today, we will also support a Czech initiative, which Sweden has co-signed, with the ambition
00:33of making sure that Radio Free Europe really continues to be an important voice for freedom
00:39and democracy, especially in those places where it is most needed.
00:43But EU foreign chief Kaya Kalla said finding funding may not be easy.
00:49It is sad to hear that the US is withdrawing its funding. Now the question for us is can
00:55we come in with our funding to leave or fill the void that the US is leaving. The answer
01:05to that question is that not automatically, because we have a lot of organizations who
01:10are coming with the same request to us. But there was really a push from the foreign ministers
01:18to discuss this and find a way.
01:20Radio Free Europe began broadcasting during the Cold War, and its coverage has played
01:25an important role in countries across Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East.
