Angry residents have spoken out against plans to turn a 15-acre grassland area next to their homes into huge cemetery.

Pendle Borough Council has submitted an application to build a Muslim cemetery with over 70 car parking spaces on land in Brierfield, Lancashire.

More than 20 residents have objected to the application, calling the plans ‘absurd’, raising concerns over drainage and the effect on local wildlife.

Others have also questioned why there is no provision for multi-faith burials.

Jen Lomax, 82, has lived on a road adjacent to the planned field for over 50 years.

00:00I'm Linda Berry. I live local. Lots of people come on this field with the dogs and just
00:06to sit and talk and play. Lots of children are here playing in the summertime. But it
00:15is very boggy.
00:16What are your thoughts about a cemetery being built on this land? Do you think it's suitable?
00:21No, I don't think it's suitable at all because it's too boggy. Plus, the access to it is
00:26through an estate. We've got two schools at the bottom of the estate, which at 3 o'clock,
00:35it's just chock-a-block is that main road and we don't want more traffic on all the
00:40different roads.
00:41Do you think the cemetery will be built on here? And if you do, how much do you think
00:46it will have a negative effect on people that live nearby?
00:48Well, I hope it won't be built, but it'll have a big impact on the residents around
00:54here.
