00:00Local fishermen on the Harayadori shore spot an unusual craft drifting in the distance.
00:06Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most unsettling mysteries
00:10that have been lost to time.
00:12Within a week, another 34 people were dancing.
00:15Within a month, 400!
00:17All dancing relentlessly without music or song.
00:21Number 10.
00:22Who were Vergi mass disappearance?
00:24Normally, people going missing would turn more heads.
00:27Some events, such as the disappearance of the colony of Roanoke, have even had stories
00:30crafted around them.
00:44Others like the disappearance of Who are Vergi in Brazil aren't quite so lucky.
00:48According to local legend, all 600 people living there vanished one day in 1923, seemingly
00:53without a trace.
00:54After they failed to arrive at a trading event, the shell of their homeland was searched,
00:58with the only evidence being a gun and an ominous message.
01:00Other civilians have claimed not to know anything about Who are Vergi's existence, leading
01:04some to wonder if it ever existed at all.
01:06Whether it's a mere urban legend or something much darker, there are still plenty of answers
01:10left unanswered.
01:12Number 9.
01:13The Lead Masks Case
01:14One of the oddest murder cases is also one of history's most forgotten.
01:18In 1966, the corpses of two Brazilian men were discovered.
01:21They were dressed in nice clothes, wearing masks made of lead, and were found next to
01:25a note containing a set of instructions.
01:37As if that wasn't all bad enough, there was also no exact cause of death due to them
01:41not being examined for weeks, causing the theories to fly.
01:44They varied in intensity, ranging from an alien abduction to an accidental overdose.
01:48A woman and her children, who lived next to the hill where the men died, claimed they
01:53had seen an orangey, oval-shaped UFO flying over the spot at the moment the detectives
01:58believed the men had died.
02:00With so much left open to speculation, we may never even come close to learning the
02:04truth.
02:06Number 8.
02:07Disappearance of Frederick Valentich
02:08Fred climbed aboard a rented Cessna 182 single engine plane for a routine cargo flight.
02:16Some missing pilots become the subjects of decades-long mysteries, and others hardly
02:19get any recognition at all.
02:21The latter was the case for Frederick Valentich, an Australian pilot who vanished during a
02:25flight in 1978.
02:27While mid-air, the Melbourne traffic control suddenly started receiving odd messages from
02:30the young man.
02:31He claimed to have been trailed by something else in the air, and that it wasn't another
02:34plane.
02:50He even reported seeing an odd green light emitting from it.
02:53After that, the only thing heard was the sound of metal being scraped.
02:56Valentich has never been found, leading the less skeptical to believe he was merely captured
03:00by members of an alien race.
03:10Number 7.
03:11Flannan Isles Lighthouse Crew Disappearance
03:13Captain James Harvey planned to land a replacement for one of the three men stationed at the
03:18Flannan Lighthouse.
03:22But as the ship neared the landing stage, Harvey was surprised to see no one there to
03:26welcome him.
03:27The crew going missing in the night isn't entirely unheard of, but some managed to slip
03:31through the cracks of time.
03:32The circumstances surrounding the vanishing of the Flannan Isles Lighthouse crew in 1900
03:37still aren't completely understood.
03:49When the suddenly abandoned post was found by ships later on, they were met with only
03:53a few signs of recent human life.
03:54The bodies of the three men were never found, leaving the cause of their disappearance unknown.
03:59A lack of storms during their final days have only muddied things further, leaving some
04:02to turn to more outlandish theories in an attempt to explain the unexplainable.
04:07Number 6.
04:08Disappearance of Connie Converse You never really know what's going on inside
04:11a person's mind.
04:12Coming onto the music scene in the 1950s, Connie Converse was one of the first to contribute
04:16to the singer-songwriter subgenre.
04:24Despite her historical significance, she didn't find fame during her lifetime, and her music
04:28career was short-lived.
04:29It was clear she wasn't satisfied with her life, leading her to disappear in 1974.
04:34The notes she left for her family are the last known proof of her existence.
04:37Her family attempted to find her a decade later, but they were eventually discouraged
04:40from continuing.
04:41To this day, it's unclear whether she adopted a whole new life or if she went down a much
04:45more drastic route.
04:50Number 5.
04:51Kasper Hauser
04:53There are some circumstances that everyday people aren't equipped to deal with.
04:56A teenager suddenly appearing and claiming to have been raised in a dungeon is one such
04:59event.
05:00When Kasper Hauser first stumbled into Nuremberg in 1828, the townspeople didn't know what
05:04to make of him.
05:05He claimed to have been kept in a dark room his entire life, completely isolated from
05:09the world.
05:10While he was initially accepted by the town and even taken under the wing of a local schoolmaster,
05:14there were still several attempts on his life, supposedly by people from his childhood.
05:17At times, Hauser claimed descent from nobility.
05:20He was killed five years after his initial appearance, leaving questions of his supposed
05:24nobility permanently unanswered.
05:27Number 4.
05:28Yuba County Five
05:29It's been almost 50 years since five men went missing in the Plumas National Forest.
05:34They are known as the Yuba County Five, and what happened to them remains a mystery.
05:39When five men suddenly disappeared while on their way from a 1978 basketball tournament,
05:43it became the topic of investigation.
05:45The Yuba County Five, a group of five men with developmental disabilities, were last
05:50seen at a convenience store buying snacks.
05:52After that, it was as though they vanished into thin air.
06:00Their car was found a few days later without them in it.
06:02The car was found dozens of miles away with gas still in the tank, raising questions of
06:06why they had left it in the first place.
06:08The later discovery of four of their bodies confirmed they had met their end via hypothermia.
06:12However, one man was left unfound, leaving some to wonder if he survived.
06:16What makes this case so difficult to solve?
06:22No independent information, no witnesses, and the likelihood that the only people that
06:27truly know what happened that night, they perished in those hills.
06:31Number 3.
06:32Kentucky Meat Shower
06:33On March 3, 1876, Rebecca Crouch was outside with her grandson when meat started to rain
06:39down in Bath County.
06:40Some events are so bizarre that it's hard to fathom them actually happening.
06:43In 1876, citizens of Kentucky were simply going about their days when they were hit
06:48with a barrage of falling meat.
06:50It rained for several minutes, coating a small area of the southern state in an unknown viscera.
06:54Where exactly it came from is unknown, and a taste test left more questions than answers.
07:02While it was initially assumed to be beef, further testing claimed that it was from a
07:05horse or even a human being.
07:07One theory is that the chunks were vomited by vultures, but this has yet to be confirmed.
07:11A sample from the shower is still available to view today, if you're brave enough to
07:14get close.
07:16Number 2.
07:17Dancing Plague of 1518
07:18Strasbourg, France.
07:20The home of iconic cathedrals, ornate clocks, and the site of one of history's strangest
07:26unexplainable episodes.
07:28The concept of disease is nothing new, but some are so odd and so rare that they get
07:32ignored.
07:33In the summer of 1518, various residents of Strasbourg were suddenly vexed with the uncontrollable
07:38urge to dance until they dropped, literally.
07:41Within a week, another 34 people were dancing.
07:44Within a month, 400, all dancing relentlessly without music or song.
07:49It appeared to be highly contagious with those who had seen the dancing joining in soon afterwards.
07:53They would then groove until they collapsed from exhaustion, thirst, or even heart attacks.
07:57The issue ended up correcting itself after those afflicted were sent away to pray the
08:01illness away.
08:02To this day, both the confirmed number of victims and how they came to be sick is still
08:05highly contested, with theories ranging from food poisoning to widespread stress.
08:10Most evidence shows that the dancing plague was a kind of cultural contagion.
08:14A mass hysteria triggered when life got too tough and the people just wanted to dance
08:19and lose their minds a bit.

08:36Utsuro Bune
08:37It may seem that alien conspiracies are a modern-day invention, but this is proof that
08:49they've been around much longer.
08:50In 1803, a strange, hollow, boat-like object washed ashore on the beaches of Japan.
08:55Its odd shape and interior, decorated with foreign texts, immediately caused it to stand
09:00out.
09:01The most annoying aspect was its passenger.
09:02A young woman was found aboard, sporting a never-before-documented hairstyle and wearing
09:06unknown fabrics.
09:15She didn't speak Japanese, and eventually the villagers sent her and her vessel back
09:18into the ocean.
09:19Who she was is still contested.
09:21Some believe she was an exiled princess, while others question if she, and the beach where
09:25she was discovered, ever truly existed at all.
09:36Which mystery would you love to see get more recognition?
