00:00Welcome along to the Met Office, weather for the week ahead.
00:04We are in for a bit of a change as the week goes on.
00:07It's the Equilux today, the Equinox on Thursday.
00:11So however you measure it, spring has started.
00:14But the big question is, will we see any spring sunshine?
00:17And, well, short answer is yes, thanks to this chunky area of high pressure
00:21just sitting to the east, low pressure down to the south
00:24generating further wet and windy weather across Spain and Portugal through this week.
00:29We're more interested in the high pressure.
00:31The winds go clockwise around high pressure.
00:34So with it sitting out to the east, it's drawing in some cool air from northern Europe.
00:39But we are in for a bit of a change.
00:41The high pressure remains kind of in control but slips away down to the southeast.
00:46Low pressure still sitting down across Siberia generating further wet and windy weather
00:51all week really for Portugal.
00:53But with the high shifting to the south, the winds will be changing direction,
00:57will lose the easterly flow.
00:59And through this week, the winds will start to draw up from the south bringing milder air.
01:04So temperatures will be on the rise.
01:06Eventually, low pressure and weather fronts will also bring some showery rain.
01:10But that's right at the end of the week.
01:12OK, let's rewind the clock and draw that high pressure back close to us to start the week.
01:18Still sitting to the east and generating a bit of an easterly wind
01:21which will push the cloud away overnight.
01:24So after a fairly gloomy Monday for many, Tuesday looks a lot brighter.
01:28But it will be a cold start.
01:30Notice the blue on the chart, a fairly extensive frost across rural parts of northern England
01:34and much of Scotland.
01:35Still potentially quite cloudy to begin with over Northern Ireland, parts of southwest England.
01:39But for many, it is a sunny day on Tuesday.
01:43Plenty of blue sky around.
01:46It will still feel pretty chilly.
01:48There's going to be a fairly brisk wind blowing across southwest England, parts of south Wales.
01:52That will be noticeable, quite gusty as well.
01:55Some brisk gusts of wind possibly coming over the Pennines to northwest England.
01:59And a bit of a breeze bringing a chill from the North Sea as well.
02:03And perhaps at times, a fair bit of cloud over the northern isles.
02:06That wind will keep the temperatures in single digits on the east coast, 7, 8 degrees at best.
02:11Elsewhere, we should creep up into double digits.
02:14But it will feel colder with that wind in southwest England and south Wales.
02:18It will certainly turn colder on Tuesday night.
02:21Temperatures plummeting by Wednesday morning.
02:24More widely down below, freezing even in many towns and cities.
02:28But notice not as cold in the southwest because here that wind will actually help to keep the temperatures up.
02:34It won't be as strong perhaps on Wednesday but still a noticeable breeze here
02:38which could also generate a few clouds and possibly even a shower or two.
02:42We could also see the winds picking up at a cloud at times on some of the coasts of eastern Scotland
02:47and again over Shetland.
02:49But for the majority, Wednesday is another fine day.
02:52We should see plenty of sunny spells.
02:55The sunshine perhaps a little hazier come the afternoon.
02:58Temperature-wise, well, they're starting to tick up as the winds start to shift around in direction.
03:04Up more widely into the teens, maybe the mid-teens across parts of the southeast and even the east coast.
03:10We'll see quite a big difference, quite a warmer feel for places like Newcastle and Hull on Wednesday compared to Tuesday.
03:17The low pressure is still down to the southwest on Thursday.
03:21The breeze, again, wafting up from the south.
03:23So, again, quite mild by day but there will be that frost to begin with, certainly across northern Britain.
03:28A bit more in the way of high cloud around perhaps and just an increased threat of some of this half threat
03:35just drifting onto eastern coast.
03:37The North Sea is very cold at this time of year so we could see some of that generated on parts of the coast.
03:43But it would be quite patchy in nature.
03:45For most places, it's another fine bright day with some hazy sunshine.
03:50And look at the temperatures by Thursday, 17, 18.
03:53We could squeak up to 20 Celsius across the southeast.
03:56First time we could do that through this year if we do reach 20 degrees Celsius.
04:02It will turn a little cooler through the nights with the clear skies.
04:05But as this low pressure edges a bit closer, the winds coming up from the south,
04:08the nights will be getting milder as we go through this week.
04:12The weather front starting to encroach from the northwest and from the south.
04:16So, increasing chance of seeing some showers across southern areas, particularly the southwest,
04:21initially on Friday but then generally perhaps coming up from the south later on Friday.
04:26Still, most places set fair on Friday.
04:29And, again, temperatures in the mid or even high teens where we hang on to the hazy sunshine.
04:34The breeze could start to generate a bit more of that low cloud on some of those North Sea coasts.
04:39So, yeah, we are seeing the changes come the end of the week.
04:42That low pressure getting closer and closer and increasing chance of seeing some showers.
04:46You've got plans for Friday or the weekend, though, do keep up to date.
04:49There's quite a bit of uncertainty about timings of these weather systems drifting north
04:53and when we'll see the showery rain moving in.
04:56But it does look as if the weekend will be certainly cloudier than the week
05:00with increased chance of some wet weather.
05:03Stay up to date yourself. Best way to do that, of course, followers on social media.
