02:35Why is it a foreign manager always seems to get the huge role

02:40But Eddie Howe has put himself as one of their managers

02:43who is a top, top class manager.

02:45He's took Newcastle to the Carabao Cup final.

02:54So, I think what he's done is an incredible job.

03:06and he's managed to do a brilliant job there.

03:08Last question, didn't they, when the owners came in,

03:10whether he would keep the job,

03:11whether they'd go for a big-name foreign coach?

03:14Yeah, absolutely.

03:15I think there was a lot of people saying,

03:17he'd go after a big manager, Jose Mourinho.

03:19You know, lots of people were talking about

03:21potential managers who had won things to go in there.

03:24But he knows this football club.

03:25He knows it inside out.

03:27He knows how to get the best out of the players.

03:29And let me tell you, the players absolutely love him.

03:32You can see the way they perform.

03:34You can see the way they run around

03:35on that football pitch for him.

03:37And he's got them organised.

03:38And, you know, I've played against Eddie Howell teams.

03:40He's a brilliant manager.

03:41Tactically, he knows how to get a team playing.

03:44You know, he can pass teams off the pitch when he needs to.

03:46But he also knows how to mix it up.

03:48And he knows how to get a team organised.

03:50And Joe Linton, one of the best performances

06:59and they've just produced big for that football club.

07:04I mean, he's instilled himself in folklore now forever as a hero.

07:11You know, look, he's a top-quality player.

07:39I have to say, you know, Liverpool, I get it.

07:42They're going to win the Premier League.

07:43They've had a great season.

07:44You know, Carabao Cup maybe is not, you know,

07:47a massive trophy for them.

07:48They've won plenty of big trophies.

07:49But that meant more to Newcastle today, I have to say,

07:52because they, the way they perform,

07:54the way they run around that football pitch,

07:56the energy levels that they produced

07:58was absolutely fantastic.

08:03And the fans, look at those pictures

08:08They're going to be taking over the capital tonight,

08:13But the pictures that we were seeing from Covent Garden,

08:16there's delirium at Wembley as Newcastle prepare to lift

08:21the Carabao Cup.

08:24So we were talking about Joe Linton

08:27as the player of the match.

08:28Yeah, he was.

08:29We're very impressed with Livermanto, I believe.

08:31Yeah, Livermanto played fantastic.

08:33Salah hardly touched the ball.

08:34He was really poor in the game, Salah.

08:36I was surprised.

08:37And, you know, in the first leg against PSG,

08:39he had a really off game.

08:40He was better in the game in midweek,

08:43but still not where I'd expect him to be.

08:47I thought big players are going to turn up,

08:49and they really didn't.

08:50You know, they didn't deserve that today.

08:52They're taking that long walk up them steps,

08:54you know, picking up a loser's medal,

08:56and they'll be really disappointed

08:57with the way that they performed in that game.

08:59That's a long old walk after getting beat,

09:01you know, against Newcastle,

09:03going into the game as favourites, for sure.

09:05Yeah, but, I mean, Wednesday night

09:07will have had a bearing on it.

09:09I mean, you've come off a big defeat like that

09:11against PSG, and is it hard to lift yourself,

09:14even for a Cup final?

09:16Well, I don't think it's hard to lift yourself,

09:18but I think you can't underestimate

09:20the physical and the mental fatigue

09:23that you get from a big night like that.

09:25You know, mentally,

09:26you're building up to that game all week

09:28to play against PSG in a massive game,

09:30you know, and then you lose it,

09:32so you're absolutely down and out.

09:34You get knocked out on penalties,

09:35and then physically,

09:36you've had to play 120 minutes

09:38against a really good side,

09:40giving everything on the pitch

09:41to try and make something happen,

09:42and then you lose it.

09:43So then, yeah, look, it's really difficult.

09:45Of course, the next game's a Cup final,

09:48so you have to pick yourself up.

09:50You know, there's no point moaning about it

09:52and whinging about it.

09:53You've had to go and pick yourselves up,

09:54but they didn't.

09:55They weren't good enough today.

09:57They were flat.

09:58They lacked energy.

09:59They lacked creativity.

10:01The big players I was expecting

10:02to perform on the day didn't,

10:04and Arnie Slott, you know,

10:06it's been a big week for him,

10:07and it's all fell apart for Liverpool.

10:09Knocked out of the Champions League,

10:10and then you lose the Carabao Cup final.

10:12Look, he's done a fantastic job.

10:14He's going to win the Premier League with them.

10:16We know that because they've been the best side,

10:18but he'll be sitting there after this week

10:20absolutely devastated that he hasn't managed

10:22to lose both games.

10:25You know, you can accept losing against PSG

10:27maybe if you win the Carabao Cup,

10:29but to get well beaten today by Newcastle,

10:31fully deserved.

10:32And the nature of the defeat as well.

10:33You know, you said that Newcastle, you thought,

10:35looked as if they wanted it more.

10:37That's got to be more disappointing

10:39almost than anything for a manager, surely.

10:42Yeah, look, I think he will be.

10:44He'll be devastated,

10:45but I think that they just weren't at the races.

10:48I can't see anything other than that

10:50Newcastle wanted it more than them.

10:52Every first ball, every second ball,

10:55they were the first ones to get to it.

10:58You know, in midfield, they had more energy.

11:00You know, they had more running.

11:02They pressed better than Liverpool.

11:04You know, when they tried to play out from the back,

11:06Kelleher and Van Dijk-Kanay trying to get on the ball,

11:09Newcastle were at them.

11:10You know, and they were having to play direct.

11:13And then Dan Byrne was just eating everything up at the back.

11:15He was absolutely superb today.

11:17Showed everyone who was maybe questioning his...

11:20Well, I was about to say, eyebrows were raised

11:22for his first call-up at the age of 32.

11:25You think that he's answered his critics very much today?

11:28Oh, yeah, I don't think he had anything to answer anyway.

11:30But, you know, people will, you know, obviously ask the question,

11:33you know, a 32-year-old getting, you know, called up to him.

11:36But he deserved his call-up for a long time.

11:38He's been brilliant. This isn't just coming out of the blue.

11:40He's been performing at a high level now for a number of years.

11:43And, you know, look, I think he deserves it.

11:46And he's answered his critics today.

11:48If there are any out there, I think he has answered them.

11:51He was absolutely fantastic.

11:53A brilliant header.

11:54He is, you know, he's an issue. He's a problem for you.

11:57Because he's so tall. He's great in the air.

11:59You know, and he will go and, you know,

12:01he'll go and get himself in the box.

12:03And set pieces in big moments can decide games.

12:05And today, it was Newcastle's set pieces

12:07that were causing Liverpool all sorts of problems.

12:10So maybe Thomas Tuchel will look at that and say,

12:12right, I can use Dan Byrne because he is a problem from corners.

12:15So we've looked at the first goal scorer, the second goal scorer,

12:18you know, all the billing beforehand.

12:20Yeah.

12:21Who's the best striker? Is it Mo Salah?

12:23Is it Alexander Isak?

12:25Well, Isak performed better today.

12:27I think it's unfair to, you know, put...

12:33But today, Isak was the better player.

12:35Salah has probably had the better season.

12:37He's going to win, you know, player of the season,

12:39in my opinion, for his performances.

12:45That's where he wants to be, doing it every season,

12:48every week, scoring goals for your team.

12:50You know, he can be potentially a world-class centre forward.

12:55Does he walk into any team in the Premier League?

12:58Yeah, I think he probably does, you know,

13:01apart from maybe Haaland, you know, at Manchester City,

13:03who play in the same position.

13:05But I think if Manchester City were to sign him,

13:08you would find a place for him in the side to start

13:11because he's that good.

13:12He's a brilliant football player.

13:14You know, he's got great feet. He's sharp.

13:16He makes brilliant runs off the shoulder

13:18of the centre half all the time.

13:21He's always trying, and he knows where the net is.

13:23You know, he doesn't even have to look.

13:25His first touch is fantastic. He gets it out of his feet,

13:28you know, and he can score goals.

13:29And look, the goal today, it's just a nod down from Murphy,

13:32and he's sharp. He's the first one there.

13:34Nod down, bang, finish.

13:35Doesn't give Kelleher the chance to set.

13:37You know, doesn't need a touch.

13:38He knows where the net is, and he's got that instinct

13:41to, you know, put the ball in the back of the net.

13:43And, you know, they fully deserve their victory today.

13:46And Isak is probably one of the best centre-forwards

13:48in the world right now.

13:49Right.

13:51So what does a cut win do for, you know,

13:53you've talked about the fact that they're not out of it

13:55for Champions League qualification either.

13:58They're sixth in the table.

13:59They're just a point behind Manchester City,

14:01who are in fifth, and fifth, of course,

14:03may be enough on the coefficient.

14:05Yeah.

14:06Does this lift you, or does it absolutely,

14:10is it so emotional that it kind of saps you?

14:13No, I don't think it does.

14:14I think this is going to lift this football club

14:16to go again.

14:17You know, they're going to enjoy tonight, that's for sure.

14:19They're going to enjoy themselves, you know,

14:21in an unbelievable moment.

14:22Brings everyone together, even though they're already,

14:25you know, a fantastic group of players who are,

14:27you know, you can see clearly that they're all friends.

14:29They're all close.

14:30You know, they've got a fantastic team spirit.

14:33I think it brings the whole club together.

14:35You know, they are all pulling in the right direction,

14:37and we see, you know, clubs who are not pulling

14:39in the right direction right now, you know,

14:42in Tottenham and Man United.

14:44This football club, every single person, you know,

14:47involved with that football club is pushing

14:51in the right direction, and the fans are all on side.

14:54It's all those long journeys they spend together,

14:56travelling to a away game.

14:57Yeah, well, the fans do, but yeah, I mean, the players,

15:00yeah, they're obviously getting up and down in airplanes,

15:02but yeah, no, look, they're spending a lot of time

15:04with each other.

15:05You know, they've had to.

15:06And, you know, you can tell they've got a fantastic

15:08team spirit, and what a moment they've got,

15:10and what a moment for them, because they fully deserve this.

15:13And I can see them going on to great things.

15:16They've got that, you know, that monkey off their back,

15:19You know, now they've been waiting, what, 70 years

15:21to win a trophy.

15:22You know, the new owners have come in, you know,

15:24and people say it's still little old Newcastle,

15:26and Newcastle were only a big club up north.

15:28Let me tell you now, this is a massive football club,

15:31and they are going in the right direction.

15:33They've got brilliant owners, you know,

15:35and willing to put money into the football club.

15:37Big plans for a new stadium.

15:38Yeah, big plans for the stadium.

15:40Big plans to take this club further.

15:42You know, and they're going to attract big players now,

15:44because anyone around the world who's been watching this,

15:47you know, every football player, you know,

15:49will be sitting on their couch watching this final today

15:51and saying, look at them fans, look at this football club.

15:54You know, I want to be part of that.

15:55You know, and they're going to, if they can get themselves

15:57in the Champions League, they've got a good chance

16:00of attracting some big, big signings.

16:05Newcastle United have waited since 1969

16:09to lift a trophy of any sort.

16:11The Fairs Cup in 69, the FA Cup back in 1955,

16:17and now Newcastle United have a trophy in the Cabinet again.

16:21They are the 2025 Carabao Cup winners.

16:26It was 17 games since they'd beaten Liverpool,

16:30and today is the one that counts.

16:32Dan Burnham, the goalscorer, is celebrating with that trophy,

16:36and Jamie's player of the match, Joe Linton, with it as well.

16:45They absolutely love it.
