00:00This news is genuinely gonna be one of the craziest things
00:02you've ever heard.
00:03It's so shocking that a prosecutor compared it
00:05to something out of a horror movie.
00:07And so this news, it comes out of Waterbury, Connecticut,
00:09where police got a call about a house fire last month.
00:11When they arrived, they found 56-year-old Kimberly Sullivan,
00:14as well as her 32-year-old stepson, who has not been named.
00:17And while he was being treated for smoke inhalation,
00:18reportedly he revealed that the fire was no accident.
00:21With him telling first responders
00:22that he intentionally said it,
00:23and he simply explained, I wanted my freedom.
00:26Right, and that, because according to an affidavit,
00:28he told police that ever since he was 11 years old,
00:30he'd been locked inside an eight by nine foot storage room
00:33for 22 to 24 hours per day without heat or air conditioning.
00:36With him saying his parents secured both sides of the door
00:38with plywood and a lock and only let him out to do chores,
00:41and adding that the last time he ever left the house
00:43was with his father when he was 14 or 15 years old.
00:45And so as you might imagine with that story,
00:47when first responders found him, he looked rough.
00:49Or you had a prosecutor comparing him
00:51to a survivor of Auschwitz death camp, and for good reason.
00:54With the affidavit stating that while he was five foot nine,
00:56he clocked in at just 68 pounds.
00:59With reports adding that his hair was matted,
01:01his teeth were rotten, his skin was dirty,
01:03as well as the man himself saying
01:04that he drank from the toilet
01:05because he only got two cups of water per day,
01:07as well as two sandwiches.
01:08Right, and so according to him,
01:09he was hungry all day, every day for his entire life,
01:12which is why in the early years,
01:14he said he sneaked out of his room at night
01:15to get food and water.
01:16And then in the early days, when he went to school,
01:18he says he asked other kids for food during lunchtime
01:20and would sometimes dig for it in the trash
01:21out of desperation.
01:22But then after his food wrappings were found,
01:24that's when he says he started getting locked in his room.
01:27And after that,
01:28after the school called child welfare investigators twice,
01:29he says his mother pulled him out of school
01:31in the fourth grade.
01:32Which again, keep in mind, that was 20 fucking years ago.
01:34And since then, he'd reportedly gotten no medical
01:36or dental care,
01:37and the last time he bathed himself was two years ago.
01:39With him also saying he used bottles and newspapers
01:41to go to the bathroom.
01:42Right, all of this is according to him,
01:43the threat of losing what few crumbs he was given
01:45and suffering longer lockdowns,
01:47that deterred him from trying to escape.
01:48But apparently that changed last month
01:50because he reportedly got ahold of some printer paper,
01:52hand sanitizer, and an old lighter,
01:53which he used to ignite the fire.
01:55And then as he and his stepmother fled the house,
01:57he reportedly fell to the ground and stayed there,
01:58so firefighters would be forced to retrieve him,
02:00believing, quote, this was his only way out.
02:02And when the shocking truth was revealed,
02:04neighbors were absolutely floored.
02:06And when the investigators started asking me
02:07about a man that may look like a child,
02:11I was like, I don't know what you're talking about.
02:13He was always upstairs on the second floor,
02:16on the window, like there,
02:18like looking like a little ghost.
02:19Like he was pale, like white.
02:22And then I'm like, I don't know why he doesn't,
02:24maybe he doesn't like to come out.
02:26I've been out here, I don't know how many times,
02:27with the dogs, cutting grass.
02:29If he would've just tapped on the window and said, help me,
02:33I could have helped him.
02:34Now with all this, his stepmother,
02:36who appeared in handcuffs while wearing a cross
02:37from her necklace, is being charged with kidnapping,
02:40unlawful restraint, cruelty, assault,
02:42and reckless endangerment.
02:43But amazingly, with all this,
02:44she is insisting on her innocence,
02:46with her attorney telling reporters.
02:48He was not locked in a room.
02:49She did not restrain him in any way.
02:52She provided food.
02:54She provided shelter.
02:56She is blown away by these allegations.
02:58We think as the evidence comes out,
03:00you will see that she's not,
03:03she's not the villain she's being made out to be.
03:05With him adding that until last year,
03:06the now deceased biological father lived with them
03:08and was responsible for his son's care.
03:10And while, you know, obviously we have to wait
03:11to see what all information comes in,
03:13looking at this situation,
03:15and this is where we get into the opinion section,
03:17he was 68 pounds at five foot nine.
03:20You had officials at the press conference today saying,
03:22throughout the years,
03:23it appears the locks used on the exterior of that room
03:26increased as time progressed
03:27and the victim got older and a bit stronger.
03:29But the police chief saying,
03:30in 33 years in law enforcement,
03:33this is the worst treatment of humanity
03:34that I've ever witnessed.
03:36You know, for now,
03:36we'll have to wait to see how things play out.
03:38And if this woman is the monster,
03:40it appears that she may be.
03:42Put her in a smaller box
03:44since she allegedly put her son in
03:45for the rest of her life.
03:46No sweet release, just time and time and time.
