00:00What happened in practice for the Australian Grand Prix?
00:05du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du.
00:15We're back.
00:16Ferrari are winning it all.
00:18Forget everything, forget the predictions forget everything you have heard because now
00:23we've seen track running.
00:25Charles Leclerc, fastest in FP2.
00:27the most representative session of the entire year.
00:31And I'm so ready, Tommy.
00:34How are you feeling, my friend?
00:36Well, it's amazing to see you so jolly
00:38at this time of the morning.
00:40Only Ferrari can do that to you.
00:43It's so true.
00:44It's so true.
00:45But look, we will start with practice one,
00:49where Lando Norris was fastest from Carlos Sainz.
00:51And Carlos Sainz is not in a Ferrari, it's worth saying.
00:56But the thing that we saw kind of a running trend
00:59for both FP1 and FP2, mistakes everywhere.
01:03And it's almost as if having gravel traps
01:06around a high-speed circuit create moments.
01:10Indeed.
01:11Yeah, you don't get that at Bahrain, do you?
01:13We saw a few offs, a lot of people going into the gravel,
01:18which we'll talk about in a bit,
01:19but obviously the big one,
01:21a big crash for one of the rookies.
01:24I mean, not the best start
01:25to Oli Behrman's full F1 season campaign.
01:29Of course, he's come in and had a few substitutions
01:32and done very well.
01:34But it's a different thing than building momentum
01:37for an entire season.
01:38So I'm sure Oli will be regretting massively
01:41that crash in FP1, but it's about how you bounce back.
01:44He didn't do any running in FP2
01:47because his car was being repaired,
01:49which means his weekend will start tomorrow, realistically.
01:53It might be a slight saving grace
01:55in the fact that Sunday appears to be wet, very wet.
02:00So in that sense, he hasn't lost,
02:03well, he hasn't lost any data
02:04in terms of the wet running on Sunday,
02:06but for tomorrow, for qualifying,
02:08of course, he's going to be on the back foot.
02:10After all the kind of talk of Haas
02:12just running their entire program on their own,
02:16they're not looking great, are they?
02:18I know it's only FP1 and FP2,
02:20but they were kind of last in both of them.
02:24And have we finally got the 2024 Haas
02:29that we were expecting of them finishing dead last
02:31in the constructors?
02:32Who knows?
02:33Or maybe they're still sandbagging
02:34and they're the absolute goats.
02:36We will see.
02:38A question from P1 Patreon member, Sophie.
02:40Should we reconsider the gravel?
02:43Should it be runoff?
02:44No, no, stop.
02:47Commentary spoke about it as well.
02:49They were like, oh, maybe we should change it to grass.
02:51Maybe we should.
02:52No, we don't want any of that.
02:53We want mistakes to be punished.
02:56And that is the beauty of Albert Park
03:00and the fact that when you ride on board
03:03with a car around here, it's awesome to watch
03:06because you know that they are within an inch
03:08of either hitting an outside wall
03:10or going into the gravel.
03:12So for me, absolutely not.
03:14It is an old school track and it should remain that way.
03:17It's an old school track and I think the excitement
03:21of going into a new season, starting with Albert Park,
03:25reminds me of the days where, you know,
03:28they used to start the race
03:29and as the drivers are a little bit rusty,
03:33I know they've done testing and stuff,
03:34but kind of finding their feet again,
03:36they get punished from their little mistakes
03:38and they need to be on it from kind of day dot.
03:41But I guess the problem that they do have
03:44and the reason why is because they're kind of chucking
03:47the gravel onto the track and then they need to kind of,
03:54well, they had a red flag, didn't they,
03:55to kind of clean it up.
03:58Maybe they need to do, was it Zandvoort,
04:00they kind of tried to stick it down
04:02that time, which was very bizarre.
04:05Let's move to free practice two then
04:06and more importantly, obviously, FP2,
04:10definitely the more representative session.
04:12And of course, it was Charles Leclerc fastest
04:14ahead of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, the top three.
04:17Question from P1 Patreon member, Sierra H,
04:20were teams right about Ferrari possibly sandbagging
04:24at testing?
04:25No, no, no, no, no,
04:27this is all Charles Leclerc at this point.
04:30Four tenths appears to be the gap.
04:33Pretty much when they were comparing Charles to Lewis
04:35at most stages in this Friday running,
04:39which is interesting to say the least,
04:43but we know Charles is great over one lap.
04:45We know that Ferrari have been quick around here.
04:47They literally won the race last time out
04:50that we were here.
04:51In the same breath, I am surprised to not see McLaren
04:55just be a couple of tenths clear.
04:57I do fully expect that from this practice,
05:00but then again, just like we said in testing,
05:02this is practice.
05:03This is an unusual track as well, it has to be said.
05:06I think they've mentioned many times,
05:08it's been said quite a lot.
05:10The first two races of the year,
05:12aren't you kind of bog standard circuit, if you like.
05:16So you might see a bit of a surprise.
05:18Now, whether McLaren do have a car
05:20that's half a second clear of the field,
05:23like they're kind of projecting on all these things
05:25and it's only testing, so we don't know.
05:27And McLaren are clearly trying to downplay
05:29their advantage already, it seems.
05:33But I just think it really is too early to say,
05:37but the gap between Leclerc and Hamilton already,
05:41I know it's only testing, sorry, only practice,
05:45but yeah, quite large, isn't it?
05:48And that's what I kind of expected anyway.
05:50You know, this is what we spoke about,
05:52is that Hamilton going into a new team like Ferrari,
05:54is he realistically gonna start beating Charles Leclerc
05:57in a car that's not, I mean, obviously Fred has said
06:00it's changed quite a lot from last year,
06:02but in the sense Charles is still embedded in the team.
06:05He knows how this car works.
06:08He knows how the power unit works.
06:09So is he realistically gonna beat him out of the blocks?
06:11I didn't think so, and at least from this Friday running,
06:14it appears that Hamilton is missing a bit of that pace,
06:17but let's wait till tomorrow.
06:19Question, and this one I'm excited for, Tommy,
06:23just because I've prayed for your downfall for many years.
06:26P1 Patreon member, Alan Enderpay,
06:28are Red Bull worse than we thought on first glance?
06:33The Red Bull does look still rather shocking.
06:36We rode on board with Max at one point.
06:37He shook his head off the lap
06:39because it was just slide central.
06:42The car didn't look at all composed
06:45in any part of the track, realistically.
06:47Still finished seventh.
06:49We're not gonna jump on anything just yet
06:51because teams are working out their new package
06:54around a track that's completely different to Bahrain.
06:57This is literally,
06:58it could be seen as a testing session, realistically.
07:01Red Bull brought 15 upgrades, I think,
07:05to this Australian Grand Prix,
07:06of course, upgrades being the light term
07:08because this is the first race of the season,
07:10but Red Bull are trying to figure out their package
07:12so they could figure it out.
07:14That's all I'm saying from this.
07:17They could figure it out.
07:18I mean, yeah, as a pessimist,
07:2190% of my brain is going,
07:22oh God, Red Bull in the mud.
07:24Verstappen isn't winning the championship this year.
07:26If I'm gonna take a sip of copium,
07:29I think back to a race like Qatar
07:33where Verstappen was behind a Haas
07:36and we were thinking they were absolutely awful.
07:38And that was of course in the sprint
07:40and we're thinking the Red Bull are terrible.
07:42And then just a little tweak on the setup,
07:44got it sorted for Sunday and he won the race.
07:47So I do think that the Red Bull
07:50could maybe be an even more extreme version
07:53of last year's Mercedes
07:54where it just works in a nice window
07:56when they get the setup.
07:57And if that car is good,
07:58we all know that Verstappen can deliver.
08:01It's just whether there'll be enough days
08:04and enough moments this year that can happen.
08:08Next question, still on the Red Bull side of things.
08:12Craig4004, what's happening with Lawson?
08:15All right, here we go.
08:16I mean, it's free practice two
08:17of the first race of the season
08:19and we're already questioning the second Red Bull seat.
08:24What's happening with Lawson
08:25is that he's gone into this car
08:27and gone, wow, no, this is very pointy
08:31on the front end, huh?
08:32That's a Max Verstappen car if I've ever seen it.
08:36And he's learning.
08:38It's realistic, like FB2
08:40in the sense of Charlotte Club being fastest,
08:41but it's also not realistic in terms of
08:43the likes of Liam Lawson and Kimi Antonelli
08:45getting up to speed.
08:46You've got to let the rookies do their thing.
08:47So yes, I am not going to start
08:51putting any question marks in the air
08:52over Liam Lawson and his career so far at Red Bull
08:54because we've not had one competitive session yet.
08:57Let's see if he gets knocked out in Q1,
08:59then we can start asking some questions
09:02about what on earth Red Bull are doing.
09:04Oh my word, yeah.
09:05And if he does get knocked out in Q1,
09:09you best believe that all the stories will happen,
09:11all the questions we'll be getting every week.
09:14And would it be a surprise, realistically,
09:18that it's a trend that's happened in Red Bull,
09:22but we're just going to have to wait to see
09:23until we get some footage of it running.
09:25It's categorical proof, in my opinion,
09:28that it's Red Bull and not the drivers,
09:30like in the sense of how they set up their car.
09:32Okay, next question, npadron95.
09:35Is Doon the GOAT?
09:39I love these questions.
09:40Only on the P1 podcast.
09:42Yeah, I think that Jack Doon has done a very solid FP2,
09:46at least, in the fact that ahead of Gasly.
09:48So he's taken how McMarco's words
09:51of being a C-tier driver and then gone,
09:52well, watch this, P14 ahead of Gasly.
09:55He was, so yes, to answer your question,
09:59Doon, yes, is the GOAT and has had a strong Friday
10:03compared to the rookies around him
10:06that haven't beaten their teammates or have crashed.
10:09Yeah, well done, Doon.
10:10Jack Doon is the GOAT and Pierre Gasly is a Finnish driver
10:14and will be replaced by Colopinto for FP3.
10:18Only the most top-tier analysis here at P1 in 2025.
10:24Next question, P1 Patreon member, Sierra H.
10:26Wow, she got two of them.
10:27How unpredictable is it to pick a winner this weekend?
10:31It is very unpredictable because we know it's going to rain,
10:35but we don't know how much rain,
10:36although Zach Brown on the pit wall said rain, rain, rain,
10:40which I kind of don't want.
10:42I don't want a full wet race
10:43where it's just raining the whole time
10:45because they are actual stinkers.
10:46So if we get that, it's going to be
10:51whoever's kind of out in front, I would imagine,
10:53unless obviously they snatch a break, make a mistake.
10:55But to answer your question,
10:57it is very unpredictable right now.
10:59I would say McLaren are still the favorites
11:02because they're both up there, they both look decent,
11:06but we don't know how these cars will react in rain.
11:10I think this is such a intriguing kind of start
11:14to the season that essentially it seems very likely
11:18that we're going to have qualifying
11:20in not even sunny conditions,
11:24like absolute blazing, insane heat.
11:29And then you're going into a race
11:31where all the temperatures are completely different.
11:36Yeah, could rain as well.
11:38I'm like you, I hope that it's like kind of sprinklings
11:41here and there or it's changing a bit or it gets heavier
11:43so they need to kind of be changing their tires a bit.
11:46Like, you know, if we get a Brazil,
11:48that rained all the way through.
11:49If we could just have a Brazil.
11:50If we could just have one of the greatest Grand Prix's
11:52of all time again, that would be great.
11:55But yeah, I do think that it's going to make
11:58a really intriguing race because they're going to have
12:03to almost gamble on what they want to do
12:06because if they are convinced that it's 100% going to rain,
12:11you don't want a completely dry setup.
12:14And do you just go for pole position
12:17and hope that if it is a wet race,
12:20it's going to be so hard to overtake
12:21and you just hope that you don't get overtaken
12:23or you could be a sitting duck.
12:25I can't wait.
12:26I am so excited.
12:27I've never been this energetic
12:28at this time of the morning ever.
12:30And Formula One could only do that to me.
12:32So I think that pretty much wraps up Friday running.
12:35Mistakes everywhere, Charles Leclerc fastest,
12:39rain on Sunday, a blazing heat qualifying tomorrow.
12:44We will be live on YouTube and Twitch tomorrow
12:47and Sunday with our brand new, good looking,
12:51multi-viewer live update positions
12:55and all that sort of stuff.
12:56Like you're going to be, you're going to enjoy it for sure.
12:58So please wake up with us.
13:01And if it isn't an unsociable time,
13:02you have no excuse to not tune in with us.
13:04Tell me what your final thoughts.
13:06I just think that the time of,
13:09I've never been this kind of feeling absolutely fine
13:13at this time of the morning.
13:14And that clearly just means that F1
13:16is the remedy for early starts because-
13:18We'll ask that again when our alarms go off at 3.30.
13:21I was going to say 3.30.
13:23Right. Thank you so much, everybody.
13:25We'll see you tomorrow for qualifying.
13:28Charles Leclerc, pal.
13:30Stop it.
13:31Can't get that excited in the morning.
13:33Bye.
13:34Bye.
13:36Bye.
