00:00The specter of a transatlantic trade war looms again over the U.S. and the E.U.
00:11The E.U. replied with countermeasures to the United States' 25 percent tariff on imports
00:16of steel and aluminum.
00:19But the commission's president stressed that tariffs are bad for business and worse for
00:23consumers.
00:25When it comes to the reserves, natural reserves like steel and aluminum, will ultimately have
00:34an impact on the production machine at the European Union level.
00:39However, we cannot be certain if these tariffs especially accommodated, are accompanied by
00:47additional policies from the E.U. institutions, this response of 26 billion in tariffs from
00:54the E.U. will create ultimately an inflationary impact for the E.U. citizens.
01:01Recent research from the Kiel Institute has proven that the tariffs from the U.S. to the
01:05European Union will first and foremost hurt the U.S. in terms of inflation, employment
01:11and growth.
01:13But what about European citizens?
01:15There are different channels on how tariffs could ultimately affect the citizens, maybe
01:22citizens when they see imported goods being more expensive, they will switch their consumption
01:28to domestic goods.
01:29However, we also have two very severe problems to think about, which is going to be the monetary
01:35reaction and the financial market reactions.
01:38According to the analysts, the E.U. remains dependent on the U.S. financial system and
01:43a possible recession in the U.S. could influence the European economy.
01:49We are still uncertain on what is going to happen on U.S. and consequently international
01:54growth because now more and more analysts discuss about the prospects of a U.S. recession.
02:00I will not exclude this scenario.
02:02Even Donald Trump during his State of the Union speech recently, he's in front of Congress,
02:08he mentioned that things could get worse before they get better.
02:12But if we keep that in mind, that can translate into a recessionary impact worldwide.
02:19The analyst says that although the E.U. has reacted more effectively to global crises
02:24before, it is still quite unprepared to deal with an extensive global recession.
