Andrew Marr is joined by Sergei Markov, a former adviser to President Putin, Director of the Institute for Political Studies.

Vladimir Putin's ceasefire conditions are for Western countries to stop arming Ukraine and for Kyiv to stop its mass military mobilisation programme, the former Kremlin adviser has said.

But the interview doesn't last long before Andrew Marr has to tell Sergei Markov, "a lot of that is contested here in the West..."

Sergei Markov, a former adviser to the Russian president, told LBC's Andrew Marr that the conditions would be "simple" in themselves, but "difficult" to accept for the US and Ukraine.

It comes after the Russian president told reporters that he accepted the idea of peace in principle, but there were "nuances" to be ironed out.

Many Western observers have interpreted this as an attempt to equivocate on the US' peace proposal and not reject it outright. US envoy Steve Witkoff is in Moscow for a meeting with Mr Putin to discuss the deal.

00:00and so to Moscow where President Putin has given his reaction at last to the
00:04American proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in the Ukraine war and it was
00:09interesting. Putin thanked Donald Trump and said I'm
00:12quoting that the idea of peace is correct and we support it but he said
00:17there are nuances he would agree to a ceasefire what he called an end to
00:21military hostilities but only if it was one that leads to a long-lasting peace
00:26and eliminates the root causes of this crisis now that's a much bigger question
00:31it was a bit Vicky Pollard I suppose da but net but net but da it showed that he
00:37doesn't want to offend Trump by rejecting his big idea out of hand but
00:41it also reminds us that Putin's demands for the end of the war are still the
00:46obliteration of an independent democratic lively Ukraine he wants it to
00:51be unprotected by NATO or anybody else he wants it have formally surrendered a
00:56third of its territory and he wants it above all to be run not by Zelensky but
01:01by a tame hand-picked pro-russian leader did Ukraine fight for so long and so
01:06bravely for that I take away from all of this that the big American plan may well
01:11have brought an up brief armistice so there are people who would have died on
01:15the front line who will not now die but it hasn't brought us any nearer to an
01:20actual peace settlement and perhaps further away from one let's talk first to
01:24Sergei Markov a Russian political scientist at Moscow State University and
01:28a supporter of President Putin mr. Markov thank you very much indeed for
01:33joining me you listen I'm sure to President Putin today did you take from
01:37that that there is a likelihood of a 30-day ceasefire no I think that Putin
01:48say the conditions which is will be quite difficult first of all as the main
01:54reason of Putin's condition is very simple Russia already signed to cease
02:00fires with Ukrainian regime backed by Western countries means one agreement
02:07means two agreements or both of them is agreement can be sharply violated by
02:11Ukrainian regime with great support of the all Western countries including
02:16your Great Britain and all so Vladimir Putin wants to prevent collapse of this
02:27fire this new ceasefire compared with previous ones that's why okay ceasefire
02:34but embargo for weaponary to Ukrainian army and stopping of mass mobilization
02:41to Ukrainian army it's so in conditions so do you think that there is any
02:48possible peace agreement that allows an independent democratic Ukraine to
02:54survive yes of course democratic Ukraine it's absolutely solution look when
03:05Ukraine been democratic it was 23 years between independence 1991 and 2014 when
03:14last democratically elected president of Ukraine I was thrown by neo-nazi
03:19putsch agonized by you by American and British intelligence service before this
03:25Ukraine was in absolutely safe and peaceful situation all neo-nazi criminal
03:31regime create this world it means a solution for Ukraine is democracy
03:37absolutely clear sure well mr. Markov you know a lot of that is contested here
03:42in the West but I think we can agree that despite some warm words from
03:47President Putin and his thanks for President Trump we aren't any nearer to
03:51a peace deal tonight than we were perhaps two weeks ago or a month ago
03:56absolutely now we have conditionally but stepping forward to the peace all right
04:05mr. Markov thank you very much indeed for talking to LBC from Moscow tonight
