A New York, en 1955, Harry Angel, un détective privé pitoyable, trouve enfin un client en la personne du très énigmatique Louis Cyphre. Celui-ci le charge de retrouver un certain Johnny Favorite, un chanteur qu'il a sous contrat et dont il est sans nouvelles après un retour de guerre dont il a émergé gravement choqué, défiguré et amnésique. Angel s'aperçoit rapidement qu'il ne s'agit pas d'une enquête ordinaire. De vieilles coupures de journaux l'entraînent à Harlem, à Coney Island puis dans une clinique isolée où Johnny Favorite a passé les dernières années.
