00:00Rice may be the country's main staple for subsistence, but corn is the all-versatile
00:06and revenue-generating grain that yields multiple industrial products for domestic use and export.
00:12Earlier today, the president unveiled a grains terminal and trading hub in Batangas worth
00:18over a quarter of a billion pesos, which our Kenneth Paciente covered in this report.
00:26Javier has dedicated decades to farming and livestock grazing in Batangas.
00:30However, he can't help but scratch his head every time the price of feeds for his pigs increases.
00:36Our income is low.
00:38Even if we don't have a lot of rice, it's not enough.
00:41To help ease the burden of farmers like Javier,
00:44One, two, three.
00:47President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. inaugurated the Sorosoro Ibaba Development Cooperative
00:52or Seed-See Grains Terminal and Trading Project.
00:55This P278 million peso facility aims to strengthen the agricultural sector by improving storage,
01:01procurement and trading of corn, a key ingredient in feed production.
01:05Through this, the import of our rice will be better.
01:11Our support for the industry of poultry and livestock will be stronger.
01:17And above all, our farmers and businessmen will have a better income.
01:25Not just here in Batangas, but in the whole of Calabarzon.
01:29He also pointed out that this facility will help strengthen the supply chain by boosting
01:33yellow corn production, which will ultimately benefit corn farmers.
01:37It will also lower the cost of feeds needed by local farmers.
01:40So if corn production increases, farmers' capital expenses for farm inputs will be reduced
01:45while their income will increase.
01:47He added that this will also help solve farmer storage problems because of the facility's
01:51large capacity and its equipment, such as silos and truck scales.
01:55This feed mill facility has two silos with a total capacity of 12,000 metric tons of corn.
02:08Currently, an estimated 567 hog raisers, poultry farmers and yellow corn farmers became beneficiaries
02:24of this project.
02:25We are very thankful for this project because it will help our government and our president
02:32to have a better income for the farmers.
02:35This facility is a big help to us because first of all, we will be able to maintain the quality
02:42of our corn because it has good drying and fermentation.
02:47In that way, if the quality of our corn is good, the price will be good.
02:54Meanwhile, the chief executive emphasized the importance of farmers joining cooperatives
02:58so they can have a stronger, unified voice.
03:00The president also directed the Department of Agriculture, or DA, to coordinate with
03:04the Cooperative Development Authority to strengthen farmers' cooperatives.
03:08You are only one person.
03:10You have only one voice.
03:12You build a cooperative, a cooperative that is working well together, that is managed
03:17well, such as SIDSEE.
03:19And you will find that the voices of our farmers, of our fishermen, will grow when our cooperatives
03:30are strong and they receive full support from the government.
03:36He also said that the government will not stop pursuing projects and programs for farmers,
03:41especially in funding agricultural equipment, improving irrigation, and promoting modern
03:46technologies to help the farmers thrive.
03:48From PTV Manila, Kenneth Paciente, Balitang Pambansa.
