00:00:00I can't see anything that well, yeah, that's kind of the point of the blindfold and a birthday
00:00:30All right, you're right up there
00:00:38This is all mine, that's right little ladybug your very own garden and you can grow whatever you want
00:00:46This is the best birthday ever. Oh, how could I forget you're gonna need this if you plan on planting any seeds
00:00:54very own trowel
00:00:57Amanda remember this when you use that trowel the key to any garden success is the love that you put into it
00:01:03I have plenty of love to give
00:01:06Yeah, you sure do
00:01:27You
00:01:37Smells like
00:01:39Snickerdoodle
00:01:41Cinnamon give it away
00:01:42We've sold out every week since the new pastor let me sell them after Sunday service good because every cookie sale counts when the flowers
00:01:49aren't blooming
00:01:52So much for frost being over the bloom is so far behind this year
00:01:56The only thing will be harvesting for Easter is dirt. The harvest calendar is just an estimate. It's been off in the past
00:02:03Can't control the weather, but we can't control other things. I should hear back soon about our business loan application
00:02:10Can't we just?
00:02:11Refinance not with the mortgage in arrears
00:02:15Your dad would be proud of how hard we're trying I know that
00:02:20We have enough to make it through Easter though, right
00:02:24Let's see what the bank says about our emergency loan I
00:02:29Don't know we do without the farm well, we won't give up I can still hope for an Easter miracle
00:02:40Can I take a few of these for the road
00:02:42Yeah
00:02:46Maybe the tips of the cafe will be extra big on this extra cold morning
00:02:54I love you. I love you, too
00:03:02Okay, right behind you
00:03:06Awesome muffin I have a regular latte and a double espresso milk
00:03:12Thank you. Have a good day
00:03:17Hey, hey, what can I get you good morning?
00:03:20oh, I'll have a large lavender latte with a dash of cinnamon some agave and
00:03:27Um, only if you have yeah, sure. Give me two minutes. Thank you
00:03:33Effie I'm pretty sure I need another two sets of hands to make it through the morning rush
00:03:38How do you do it when in doubt?
00:03:41More caffeine, huh? Cheers Cheers
00:03:46Wow
00:03:48Thank you again for letting me pick up some extra shifts at the cafe
00:03:53Things are pretty tight the farm at least until the spring bloom comes in. Well, I know you do anything to save the farm
00:04:01For example used to love our playdates, you know, the ones where you just basically got me to help you weed
00:04:07My dad always said that pulling weeds built character, uh-huh
00:04:13Almond milk lavender latte to pump agave dash of cinnamon. Thanks, Amanda
00:04:18Have we met before? No, you just have a nice beautiful
00:04:24labeled name tag
00:04:31Hmm this might be the best latte I've ever had
00:04:38Mm-hmm. Nope that that's all yours
00:04:40That's a $14 tip and I give you a $15 if I had it
00:04:45You see some people drink coffee to you
00:04:48Drink coffee. I drink coffee
00:04:50Because it's an experience and yours has just the right amount of lavender and agave
00:04:57Hmm, not too sweet. Not too floral and just the right temperature for a cold day like today
00:05:02Well, um, well, thank you no, thank you I've never heard anybody talk about coffee like that no
00:05:09That's because we just met
00:05:12Hey, I appreciate your artistry your effort most of all that's mom. Have a good one. Have a good day
00:05:22Okay, that was adorable
00:05:24What he appreciated my artistry. That was a $14 tip. I think he was appreciating more than just your artistry
00:05:31Sam hi Gladys. Oh, hi Gladys. Amanda Raymond. You're in the coffee business now
00:05:37Uh, just temporarily until the spring bloom comes in fingers crossed that spring is hiding around the corner. I'll just take a black
00:05:45Oh, yeah, you know, I really do miss seeing those dedication arrangements from your farm in the church lobby every Sunday
00:05:52That was really more my dad's thing. I know you two were close
00:05:56Just know how much those arrangements lifted my spirits. I
00:05:59Sure, hope we get to see them again and we hope to see you again, too
00:06:04I'm sure you'll see my mom and service on Sunday
00:06:10Thank you, have a good day hi
00:06:17Everything good
00:06:19Yeah, just
00:06:21It's hard. Sometimes people talk about my dad and brings up a lot
00:06:25Everyone has nothing but love for him
00:06:29I do too
00:06:32Except some of those gardening puns were way too cheesy
00:06:37It was a good one. Oh
00:06:38You grow girl what incarnation?
00:06:46Here she comes again who someone who seems to lack a little sunshine in her life
00:06:51Hey
00:06:54I'll take the usual
00:06:56Yes
00:06:59I
00:07:02Stay with you
00:07:05Thank you, you know, it's a change
00:07:13Not one for a conversation much is she yeah, she's a real tough cookie
00:07:19Speaking of cookies. Yeah, I think we deserve a little cookie celebration after having survived that morning rush
00:07:26My mom made a fresh batch of snickerdoodles this morning. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Mm-hmm
00:07:33Mm-hmm. No words. I have no words. Yeah. Yes good that
00:07:39wait
00:07:40idea
00:07:42How many of these can your mom make?
00:07:44Cuz we could sell them in the cafe. I was hoping you would say that you sent me up. Oh
00:07:50And whatever profits we make can go right back to the farm, okay, you don't go that far. Uh-huh, Amanda
00:07:56Um, I just died and went to cookie heaven. So yeah, we should do that
00:08:04Hi, how can I help you?
00:08:20You
00:08:25Because they still need time ladybug
00:08:28What if something is wrong? I'm getting worried
00:08:32You know what? I do when I'm worrying I
00:08:34Say a little prayer
00:08:36Why do you do that? Because it lets me get my worries away instead of letting them weigh me down
00:08:44And I know God will take them from me
00:08:47You really think so? Yeah
00:08:49I guess I'll try
00:08:53Hi God
00:08:54It's me Amanda Raymond. I'm really nervous about my garden. Please help them grow to be big beautiful and healthy
00:09:03Amen
00:09:05How's that that was perfect
00:09:08I
00:09:19Know that you'd probably be praying right now
00:09:23Prayers can't melt ice
00:09:26They can't bring you back
00:09:28I
00:09:37Think so. Yeah. No, no bumps. No bruises. Oh, thank goodness. Did you live nearby? I'm closer to town
00:09:42My husband and I just moved here
00:09:45Yeah, I'm gonna call him. It's gonna come and get me
00:09:48Okay. Okay. Um, I can also get your car out with our tractor, but um, should we go inside? It's it's freezing out here
00:09:57You're a godsend
00:09:59Amanda oh, sorry
00:10:01Yeah, yeah, just watch your step. They're just a little shook. I'll put the kettle on
00:10:06Nothing better than a hot cup of cocoa on a frigid day
00:10:11Cheers to that. Oh
00:10:14You have a lovely home
00:10:16You live here with your husband. No, I am single
00:10:20It's my parents house, well, um, it's actually it's my mom's house my uh, my dad died last year
00:10:27Sorry to hear that. I
00:10:30Did see the sign on your farm out front the Raymond pick your own bouquet flower farm
00:10:36Yeah, that's our family business
00:10:38I I know it doesn't look like much right now, but hopefully in a few weeks. It'll be a
00:10:45Cornucopia of color out there. Yeah the weather
00:10:49So either there were gardeners greatest ally or a worst enemy
00:10:53Let me guess
00:10:54Pink peonies and maybe a row of purple hyacinths to complement them and oh I can imagine a wide array of tulips
00:11:03perfect Easter flower and
00:11:05Well, maybe a hybrid or two when they cross pollinate. Okay, Lori
00:11:10Most people don't know the difference between a daisy and a daffodil
00:11:14What's your secret my whole life has been the business of flowers dear so you're a florist what's for 40 years
00:11:21I'm officially retired now. It's just a hobby. I
00:11:25Don't even compete in the annual Easter flower arranging competition anymore, but you have have you have you ever won?
00:11:31Oh, I haven't but I can play second last year my highest finish
00:11:35So, um, I'm sitting with floral royalty is what you're saying. That's certainly not the Queen but
00:11:41Perhaps in her royal court
00:11:45I can go get my tractor and we can get you back on the road. Oh, oh, I certainly appreciate that
00:11:52Thank you so much
00:11:56Amanda is there anything that I can do to repay you for your help with my car?
00:12:03Well, can you pull a miracle and melt the ice out there?
00:12:06You really need a bloom, huh, you know the flower business
00:12:09We make most of our money during certain seasons and with the Easter bloom being so far behind
00:12:14well, sadly, my alter ego is mother nature, but
00:12:18What what about that Easter flower arranging competition? I mean prize is $20,000
00:12:26Wow, I mean
00:12:29That would be enough to get us through the season
00:12:33Except there's just one tiny huge problem
00:12:37I'm a farmer not a florist. I mean, that's why we have our customers pick their own bouquets
00:12:42Well, that's where I come in. I mean, I know six weeks is not a lot of time, but I
00:12:47Can teach you what you need to compete if you're willing to learn?
00:12:51The cost of flowers alone. No, I can handle it and we can always practice with silk flowers. I
00:12:57Mean think about it. We might even dethrone Queen Constance Hughes
00:13:05Constance yeah, she's won ten years in a row
00:13:10Come on just take my number here
00:13:18Go
00:13:22This is a very generous offer and
00:13:27Sure, it'd be fun to learn
00:13:29but I
00:13:31Couldn't compete I'd be going against people with years of experience
00:13:36Thank you, but I'll just have to find some other way to keep us afloat
00:13:41Okay
00:13:44Call me if you change your mind. I will come on. Let's go get your car. Yes, please
00:13:50No, I understand you're just doing your job. Thank you
00:13:57Hey, is everything okay? That was the bank Amanda
00:14:01our last two years of sales just
00:14:05Aren't enough to give them confidence to approve the loan
00:14:08That was our hail Mary to get caught up
00:14:11I
00:14:13Have to do it do what?
00:14:16The statewide Easter flower arranging competition. The first prize is $20,000
00:14:22It's at least enough to keep us afloat until the bloom comes flower arranging. Is this a skill that you've been hiding from me?
00:14:29hiding from
00:14:31I don't know. I don't know. I don't know
00:14:33I don't know. I don't know
00:14:35I don't know. I don't know
00:14:37It's a skill that you've been hiding from me hiding from
00:14:42Everyone including myself
00:14:45But I met a florist yesterday and she's retired, but she's competed before and she said she'd teach me
00:14:53Your dad would love to hear that. I have to at least try
00:14:57Maybe our last hope
00:14:59well a
00:15:01Little bit of hope is all we need
00:15:04Oh
00:15:07Amanda I have to ask what made you change your mind about the competition?
00:15:14our
00:15:15business loan application got denied so
00:15:20Winning the competition prize money. It feels like maybe the farm's last hope
00:15:26Then let's not waste any time
00:15:29Take a look at your blank canvas
00:15:34No, I know that look the I have no idea where to begin look
00:15:39Yeah, that one. Let's just have fun to start and we'll see what we're working with
00:15:48So he and ease and
00:15:51Ranunculus iris
00:15:54and
00:15:56Go to a classic got some roses. Yeah, you do know all the names of the flowers and how they grow
00:16:01but I I want to see you actually
00:16:04Create something. I think that my creative side is still hibernating for winter. It's good thing. There's no pressure
00:16:11Come on, just have fun
00:16:13Okay
00:16:14You asked for it
00:16:19Soon
00:16:23And
00:16:29Roses
00:16:32I
00:16:37Call it a
00:16:39Thorn amidst roses
00:16:43It's rough I I I know but I am ready and willing to do whatever it takes that's the spirit
00:16:51Don't be so hard on yourself. You got a lot to learn. There are five principles to floral design you master those
00:16:57You got a chance to win they are harmony contrast purpose balance and
00:17:03I'm gonna keep the last one a secret a secret. Well, I mean don't I need all five to in the competition?
00:17:10That's a secret for now at least. I mean it it's something that you can only learn after you've succeeded at the first four, but
00:17:17Let's get on with it
00:17:19No, the first principle is harmony
00:17:23Harmony yeah, we're going on a field trip for this one
00:17:27Come on, let's take a walk
00:17:29Okay
00:17:36Lesson awaits inside. How's everything? Okay, I
00:17:42I
00:17:44Haven't been back inside since my dad's funeral and that was over a year ago
00:17:50So it brings back a lot a
00:17:54Lot. Hey mom
00:17:58Perfect timing meet Amanda Raymond. She's the flower protege was telling you about
00:18:04We've met
00:18:06Mr. Lavender latte. Mm-hmm. It's good to see you minus the name tag
00:18:13I'm Derek the new pastor. It's a pleasure
00:18:17Well, I don't want to get in the way of flower training. Yeah, they require practice myself. So
00:18:23Oh
00:18:25As you can hear I need all the help I can get well, we're on our way there as well. I'll see you inside
00:18:33I'm only of course you're ready
00:18:53I just need a moment. Take your time
00:19:15Thank you, just thank you pink was Sonia's favorite color. Yeah
00:19:22I
00:19:31Laurie I I'm I just can't
00:19:42I
00:19:44Know I'm I'm running the lesson. I don't feel bad for one sec
00:19:49You know, it's not one of the five principles but the key to any successful arranger is the ability to adapt it's not
00:19:56Not every arrangements gonna go exactly as you want it to
00:20:01Amanda everything, okay
00:20:03yeah, I
00:20:06I'm just not ready to go back in there pastor, please. Don't we pass it on Sundays?
00:20:11Derek
00:20:13Don't be so hard on yourself
00:20:15You're not ready it's on your time, okay, and I'd be happy to open the door for you if and when that time comes I
00:20:23Appreciate it. It's um, it's very chivalrous. Well, I was raised. Well, I'll let you two get to it
00:20:32Hope to see you again
00:20:34I
00:20:40Just like a antique well, it's very retro now for your lesson. I
00:20:46Want you to pay special attention to each person solo?
00:20:59Tenor
00:21:05Right, okay, I'm following
00:21:13The harmony
00:21:16So I
00:21:18think
00:21:20We can agree and
00:21:23Individually
00:21:25These flowers are lovely right right now. I want you to close your eyes
00:21:30Close your eyes, and I want you to imagine that the quartet is singing
00:21:45Voila
00:21:48How did you
00:21:50Your first lesson grasshopper. I'm more of a ladybug person
00:21:56noted
00:21:57See the key is to look for ways for the flowers to complement one another
00:22:05Now you give it a try ladybug
00:22:11Okay
00:22:14So as you can see we've substantially upped our offer really taking into consideration the value and a courage of the land
00:22:21Tom
00:22:22We've told you before and we will tell you again. It's not for sale
00:22:26Hi, Amanda. Your father was a good friend of mine, and I'm trying to help you and your mom by providing another alternative
00:22:35That a letter from the mortgage company
00:22:38We're getting more and more behind and without the business loan to notice of foreclosure again
00:22:45I don't want to be in this position
00:22:47But I'd like to give you the option to earn something substantial and fair based on what you've built as
00:22:53opposed to other options
00:22:56We still have time Tom and you're right you and Craig were close. So you'd know that he would decline my offer
00:23:04respectfully
00:23:07I'm rooting for you reach out to me before you hear from the bank again
00:23:14You know where to find me
00:23:17I
00:23:22For closure
00:23:24How did this happen no reserves and bad weather and your dad was the flower whisper
00:23:31I should have put back here when dad asked me to
00:23:34Maybe then I would know more about the business and listen to me
00:23:38This is not your fault
00:23:40Have faith that things will turn around
00:23:42Why would God do this to us after everything we went through with dad and frost and now foreclosure?
00:23:50God doesn't work like that Amanda
00:23:54I'll tell you what
00:23:56I'll get more hours at the accounting firm and I'll keep baking and I'll give you time to practice so you can win that competition
00:24:05How'd it go today
00:24:08Yeah
00:24:10Sorry, but um, I wouldn't count on winning the competition
00:24:20God wants us
00:24:22to be joyful
00:24:24But that doesn't mean we have to be happy all the time
00:24:28there will be times in our lives of struggle of
00:24:32Loss, but even when there are tears rolling down your cheeks, there can still be joy in your heart
00:24:39Ultimately, I want you all to remember that during the Easter season
00:24:44joy
00:24:45can be steadfast in sorrow and
00:24:49triumphant in tribulation
00:24:52Amen
00:24:54Amen
00:24:57James pleasure
00:25:00Thanks for me. Good to see you
00:25:03Sweetheart great. Thank you
00:25:06Thank you
00:25:08wonderful sermon today D
00:25:11Or should I say pastor D?
00:25:13Samuel Stevens in the flesh. It's good to see you my friend. Don't tell me he came all this way just to hear me preach
00:25:18I know you're busy now, but hear me out
00:25:21I'm starting a new venture. That could be a really exciting opportunity for you a way to connect your two passions
00:25:27Okay. All right. Well, we should find time to chat catch up. We'll talk soon. Good. See you too
00:25:33Hmm
00:25:36Pastor, uh
00:25:38It's so sunny. Okay, you get a hall pass
00:25:42Lavender latte just the way you like it. And what did I do to deserve this?
00:25:47token of my
00:25:49Appreciation for your very generous tip the other day, but I don't keep you from the congregation
00:25:54Please my congregations too busy gobbling up your mama's banana bread. So
00:25:59I've got an hour until my next service. Do you care for a walk?
00:26:11So, how are you liking town so far I love it although for me it's a it's a bit cold
00:26:17Yeah, my parents grew up in Vermont. So they're used to it, but I was raised mostly in the South
00:26:23You know come to think of it people here like the weather there
00:26:29Your mom said that you are a bit of an outdoorsy type
00:26:33That's my mom loves talking about her son, but she's right. I do love being outside
00:26:40It's my happy place
00:26:43She also mentioned four-wheeling
00:26:46Did she and?
00:26:49axe-throwing
00:26:51Of course you did mountain biking. What else skydiving? That's actually a lot of fun
00:26:58If I met you today, I never would have would have guessed
00:27:02Is it the clean-shaven?
00:27:05Tailored suit jacket polished dress shoes things not your typical mudding outfit
00:27:11Can't say I've met too many pastors who like axe-throwing and skydiving. Well, if you can't tell that means I'm doing a good job
00:27:19What does that mean?
00:27:21I'm new to this town. So I don't want people
00:27:25you know knowing about my
00:27:28Extreme-adventure side just yet. You think that they really care what you do for fun when you're not working
00:27:34They have a lot of trust in me and being a pastor is a big responsibility
00:27:38I don't want people thinking that I'm reckless of me responsible during my downtime. I hope you understand
00:27:45Can we just keep this between us?
00:27:48seriously
00:27:50seriously, I
00:27:53Sure
00:27:55Only if you tell me more about skydiving I never prayed so hard in my life
00:28:10Amanda it's 6 in the morning. What are you doing? I couldn't sleep and wanted to start prepping things before heading to Lori's later today
00:28:18Well, let me help
00:28:21I
00:28:24Got to meet her son
00:28:26Mom it's not like that. He's the the pastor and I don't know we're just in
00:28:33two different places
00:28:36You know when I met your father at the farmers market we were both searching for the perfect bouquet
00:28:41I both found it exactly the same time and he insisted on buying it and I let him
00:28:48Only to have him purchase it and give it to me
00:28:52But while your father was a man who was incredibly firm in his faith
00:28:57He was also a man who was always willing to meet me wherever I was in my faith journey
00:29:03And I just met Derek. I don't know that much about him. Well, and I'm sure he has a lot to learn about you, too
00:29:11Just do yourself a favor. Don't let your own fears get in the way
00:29:18You
00:29:21Weren't always dad's ladybug the ladybugs are returning. There's a slight bit. I hope that the ground will soften soon
00:29:34Well a slight bit of hope is all we need
00:29:48Amanda are all of these table arrangements yours. Ah, yeah, I'm practicing for a flower arranging competition
00:29:55Why are you using fake flowers?
00:29:57well the frost and I
00:30:00Don't have the budget for a fresh one. So I've just been using fake ones to practice practicing with fake flowers
00:30:05That just won't do please. Let me donate to your flower fund and I'll take all of your mom's cookies, too
00:30:11No, no, you know you can't you can't um, it's too generous
00:30:15Of course I can consider it an investment in you and your talent my reward comes in a beautiful arrangements
00:30:22I get to see from you
00:30:23here and at church
00:30:27Thank you
00:30:29It's a freedom
00:30:39Okay, as much as I would love to take a break and go shopping shouldn't we be focusing on flowers
00:30:45Ladybug, you have much to learn Lori right on time. Yeah
00:30:51Amanda so good to see you. I am so excited that you came in today
00:30:54Our spring line just came out and let me tell you it is amazing
00:30:58Feels like you should be focusing more on pushing scarves and jackets the current weather
00:31:03Well, you know what if you think spring then it will come
00:31:07But what do you say we try on some outfits? Yes, Amanda. I want you to pick out an outfit
00:31:13Any outfit whatever moves you?
00:31:24Oh
00:31:31Very cute bright. Oh, it's bright. What do you think?
00:31:37It's lovely but now follow me
00:31:54Oh
00:32:25I
00:32:30Seems like a fun fashion show. It's actually a valuable lesson in floral design. You're gonna learn that very soon
00:32:44Come on
00:32:50So, is there a reason you're avoiding B Constance
00:32:55I
00:32:57Constance and I
00:32:58Well, we used to be best friends. We used to be
00:33:03We worked in the same florist shop for years
00:33:06Why she had such an eye for design
00:33:09Yeah, there's so much laughter
00:33:11We worked so many hours in that shop
00:33:14Creating arrangements for every occasion. It's missing something
00:33:19something bright and
00:33:21yellow
00:33:24Sunflower
00:33:26There was a signature to all our designs. It was a single
00:33:30Sunflower, I like to think that it represented the brightness of our friendship
00:33:35until
00:33:37Circumstances changed that forever
00:33:41You see
00:33:43We had a plan
00:33:45We were going to open our own floral shop. And then I then I met Don
00:33:52Fell in love got engaged
00:33:55He relocated for work and I had to make a choice
00:34:01Follow my fiance or keep my promise to my best friend
00:34:09Broke Constance's heart she stopped talking to me and I did the same there was no coming back from it
00:34:16I'm sorry to hear that. You can imagine how tense it is when we see each other every year at competition and now
00:34:23Thanks to my son. We're practically neighbors
00:34:26Why haven't you ever tried to reconcile? I think we're both just too proud to forgive
00:34:31So
00:34:41Take a look at this first outfit you see how the black skirt really makes the red top stand out even more
00:34:47Yeah, it pops. Yeah, it doesn't have to be just color. I mean look at this one with the free-flowing skirt and the fitted top
00:34:54so shape
00:34:57And and the stripes here with the solid color
00:35:01Patterns. Yes, right. You're learning
00:35:04The second principle is contrast how contrasting colors patterns shapes textures can all make things stand out
00:35:11Even more now look I made this one earlier
00:35:16It's not terribly exciting is it use a boost I think so
00:35:23Hey
00:35:27Mm-hmm
00:35:32So what you're saying is
00:35:35That contrasting things can come together to create something. That is
00:35:42beautiful
00:35:43exactly
00:35:45Kind of like you and Constance
00:35:50Yeah
00:35:51You caught me in my own lesson
00:35:54Maybe you have something to learn too. I
00:36:01Think it's too late for that
00:36:06But you know what I am gonna go make us some lunch
00:36:08You're gonna practice contrasting arrangements and then I'm gonna see what you have when I get back
00:36:15Okay
00:36:24Hey, oh
00:36:26Hi, are you in the floral zone or can I say a quick hello? I
00:36:31Think I would have to be skilled to be in the zone. Come on in
00:36:37So I have to ask which one of these flowers is your favorite
00:36:45Favorite flower that's like picking a favorite child. I mean, I guess I would have to say the
00:36:52Hydrangea Oh or maybe on second thought carnations or no, maybe roses
00:36:58I don't know. It's too too difficult to do. I love seeing how passionate you are about them
00:37:07Well flower protege, I'll leave you to your craft I do have one very important question
00:37:15Mm-hmm
00:37:21Will you
00:37:24Accept this rose
00:37:30Well after careful consideration, mm-hmm, I
00:37:36Will gladly accept this rose you have my heart pounding for a second there
00:37:42I have another question for you
00:38:03Hey, is this because of you ask your daughter
00:38:12You
00:38:15All right, everyone right this way don't be shy
00:38:30So, what's up, well, like I said Sunday I'm starting a new venture it's a new mountain retreats program
00:38:36We're doing week-long spiritual retreats for young men up in the Shenandoah Valley
00:38:41It's a great experience for our retreatants to be in nature and pray
00:38:46I've actively been looking for a spiritual leader to guide them
00:38:51But then it hit me
00:38:53You're the perfect guy for the job God the mountains it has Derek Matthews written all over it
00:39:01I mean Sammy, you know, I would do it just about anything for you. I mean, I wouldn't be here right now if wasn't for you
00:39:09It's just I know relocation is inconvenient given you just moved here, but this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity
00:39:16Come on, don't you miss the mountains?
00:39:18more than anything
00:39:20but I
00:39:24Don't rock climb anymore
00:39:26That's not the only thing this is about
00:39:29Your story is powerful
00:39:32the agony the tears I
00:39:34Want to be able to use your story to draw others closer to God
00:39:43Please really think on it. Our first retreat starts shortly after Easter. So so you need an answer soon
00:39:57a
00:39:59New concoction, why not? I want to see what your creative sides been brewing up vanilla solid. Oh
00:40:08Cardamom
00:40:09Okay, I I know that you Amanda are still kind of a coffee novice
00:40:14But I I just I just let me let you in on a little industry secret. You never combine vanilla with cardamom
00:40:22They're totally different opposite flavor profiles. They don't work
00:40:26together
00:40:27Yeah, okay. Don't think just experience it
00:40:32Yes, it's just that the sweetness of the vanilla
00:40:37Hmm
00:40:39Contrasts perfectly with the spice and complexity of the cardamom. You're a genius. What?
00:40:43No, just just a good student. We have to put this on the regular menu like right now. What do you want to call it?
00:40:49maybe
00:40:51Ladybug latte. Oh
00:40:54Oh two pumps extra handsome incoming Oh, mr. Lavender latte
00:41:03Good morning, Amanda happy. I'll do my usual pleasing. Thank you. Oh, you know what? Actually you should try Amanda's new creation
00:41:11the ladybug latte mr. Lavender
00:41:13pastor
00:41:15Right. I'm sure ladybug latte. That sounds very unique. It's Amanda's creation. I'll try it
00:41:24Mm-hmm
00:41:25That is that is divine. Well, thank you. It's delicious. Oh, um, Amanda great shift today. I you should go home
00:41:34Don't I know no, no, no, actually, um, we're out of your mom's cookies
00:41:38So I'm gonna need you to make another batch of those
00:41:43Yes
00:41:45Cookies. Mm-hmm, and it would be so much easier if there were two pairs of hands. I'm helping you do that
00:41:51I have to stay here though. So I just I wonder if there's anyone else who could help you. Oh
00:42:01Yeah, I mean the whole reason I came in today was to get a little break from my Sunday preparations
00:42:06I'd be happy to lend a stirring hand. Of course if you don't mind, no, she doesn't mind. I I don't
00:42:22I
00:42:24Have you done this before
00:42:28Is it that easy to tell
00:42:31My mom normally takes charge in the kitchen. I just kind of follow her lead. Yeah, I never would have guessed that
00:42:40So
00:42:41How did you get into the business of God? I see you changing the subject now, huh? Oh just you know
00:42:47Redirecting away from this flowery fiasco. I'm just um, that's just kind of curious, you know to tell you the truth
00:42:54I never thought I'd be a preacher or a pastor. I
00:42:57I went to business school of all places
00:43:01Quickly found out the corporate world was not for me
00:43:04So I decided to follow my passion for the great outdoors and teach rock climbing. I loved it for years
00:43:11but um
00:43:13And one event
00:43:16Changed my life. I
00:43:19Fell
00:43:2160 feet
00:43:23Yeah, cracked my vertebrae multiple places at five surgeries. Doctor said I never walk again
00:43:31Derek I'm so sorry to hear that. Yeah
00:43:37Yeah that time in the hospital it's like my desert I
00:43:43Didn't have much to turn to
00:43:46Then I met Samuel Stevens, he was my patient therapist
00:43:51He not only taught me how to walk again, but he taught me about God
00:43:56He saved my life. I
00:43:59Do just about anything for him. Yeah, he gave me his granddaddy's Bible. I started reading and haven't put down since
00:44:06that book
00:44:08It gave me hope
00:44:10Hope turned into healing and before I know it I was walking again
00:44:16Wow, I mean that's that's an amazing story
00:44:21Yeah, but you ever wonder how you would feel it if you were never healed
00:44:30Of course I did
00:44:33But I'm a firm believer in faith
00:44:36You see things happen for a reason
00:44:41Even if you can't see it in the moment faith. Yeah, that's it
00:44:48That's a hard one, yeah it is
00:44:52Especially when things aren't going your way
00:44:55Kind of like now
00:44:57Yeah
00:45:01Care to share it's just me and a big pile of dough
00:45:11So
00:45:13I've been struggling a lot with that because every year my dad would pray for a bountiful Easter harvest and
00:45:22Every year it seemed that his prayers were answered
00:45:29So, why did he of all people have a heart attack
00:45:34When he died I I came home to help my mom on the farm
00:45:39And after his funeral I just I
00:45:43Stopped praying
00:45:45Stopped going to church
00:45:49And then this year of
00:45:52all years when we
00:45:54Needed our biggest Easter bloom yet
00:45:57We've had the worst winter in in decades
00:46:02So am I supposed to trust that's just a coincidence?
00:46:05Or is that a punishment? I
00:46:08Don't think God's waiting for us to get out of line just so he can reprimand us. It's not punishment. I
00:46:15Like to believe that God he loves us just as much good times as bad
00:46:22Maybe during hard times. He just wanted us to get a little closer to him
00:46:26comfort support
00:46:30Love
00:46:32God loves us always
00:46:35I mean you're a pastor. So you have to say that right?
00:46:40technically
00:46:43But I still make mistakes
00:46:47Also supposed to take care of people and right now getting this flower
00:47:00There
00:47:04These are winners from previous years and then there's mine
00:47:12Well, there's still time till Easter
00:47:19Oh good timing
00:47:21Laurie good morning lady bug. Can you please tell me that you have another lesson ready?
00:47:26Because I still don't feel like I'm getting it patients makes perfect. It's time for your third
00:47:32It's time for your third principle
00:47:35purpose now, we've been working on floral arrangements, but it's important that every design says something on a more
00:47:42Deeper personal level you have to find inspiration outside the flowers to put into the flowers
00:47:49Okay, I'm following. So here's what I want you to do. The church is hosting an Easter basket raffle tomorrow
00:47:55We've been a parish hall to raise money for the local food bank
00:47:58Church members and non-church members are creating and donating
00:48:02Individualized baskets now the items in these baskets. They all mean something very personal to their curators
00:48:09So you want me to arrange an Easter basket, but how is that supposed to make me a better floral arranger?
00:48:19Laurie
00:48:21Sorry dear, um
00:48:25Not every lesson reveals itself right away
00:48:29Okay, I will do my best you always do I'll see you tomorrow
00:48:44Any ideas on where I get some inspiration for an Easter basket, I just might
00:48:50I
00:48:57Used to love it when dad would push me around in that wheelbarrow and you always came in needing a bath
00:49:07Remember that Christmas that's probably the best Christmas ever. You know, I still use those pruning shears
00:49:13Hmm
00:49:17Feeling inspired I've got an idea. Oh
00:49:24Thanks so much for coming don't forget your raffle tickets
00:49:29So
00:49:30What do you have? I did a my first garden basket. I got something like this
00:49:36Christmas's many many moons ago and it really meant a lot to me. It gave me a sense of
00:49:42Independence and purpose so hopefully it'll do the same for someone else you ladybug have aced the assignment when you have a special
00:49:50Connection to your arrangements. It's gonna show in the final product
00:49:59Grace can I have your help please? Sure
00:50:05Well, well, well look at that garden basket, yeah, where's the mulch?
00:50:10Didn't go with the aesthetic
00:50:13Where's yours?
00:50:15It's a faith-based basket
00:50:19complete with mustard seeds
00:50:21Very on-brand. Mm-hmm. But why didn't you do something? That's you know, like a rock climbing basket with some ropes
00:50:29Carabiners, I know I know I can't control everything. But one thing I can control is how people in the church see me
00:50:36Maybe there's something important about sharing all sides of yourself
00:50:42It's a little more complicated than that
00:50:47But of course I'm here to meet you where you're at
00:50:51I'm sorry. Are you coming for my job?
00:50:54I'll stick to farming
00:50:56For now. All right. Well for now, I should go MC the event
00:51:06You
00:51:13All right, and now for all the green thumbs in the church
00:51:17we have a basket donated by the wonderful Amanda Raymond a
00:51:23Beautiful starter set for the next great gardener out there. Would you look at all those tickets? All right
00:51:30See what we got
00:51:31And the lucky winner is two eight four two two eight four two
00:51:39Two eight. That's me. Well, there we go Constance Hughes
00:51:45Constance Hughes everyone. Thank you Constance. You enjoy? Okay, everyone. I think that wraps up our event for today
00:51:52Thank you all for coming out
00:51:55I
00:52:02Look over there this this is for you. Really? Yeah, I think this is oh
00:52:14You're welcome. Hey, look at that. Uh-huh
00:52:19That right there
00:52:21That's the power of God's love
00:52:24I am I do have to get home and practice but I
00:52:30Was wondering if I could show you something first
00:52:33Yeah
00:52:35Yeah, of course
00:52:47Voila Wow, you got good secrets
00:52:55Look at those stars God's freckles. That's my mom used to say
00:53:04Can I ask you something
00:53:06Sure. I haven't been to church in a year and
00:53:13You're a pastor
00:53:16What do you see in me
00:53:19So much I
00:53:21Don't look at someone
00:53:23Wonder how often they're going to church or praying every day
00:53:28besides of someone's faith
00:53:30that can change his life changes, but
00:53:34The size of someone's heart
00:53:36That's what I see. I
00:53:39See that in you
00:53:43The way you love your family your farm
00:53:49Flowers
00:53:52And I might be losing all that soon I
00:53:56Know the stress of all this must be a lot
00:54:00Have faith I
00:54:04See that you too you do I do
00:54:11I'm praying for you
00:54:13Be patient with yourself
00:54:16That's my sermon for tomorrow
00:54:19The fruit of patience now, that's a tough one
00:54:24Yeah
00:54:26It is
00:54:28But it's worth it
00:54:36You you you probably have some flowers that need to be arranged yes, you should probably get going
00:54:44Thank you
00:54:46For bringing me here
00:54:54Patience
00:54:57Right everything's set
00:55:02I
00:55:04Remember doing these eight races back in the day. This is your fourth principal balance. Oh
00:55:11All right kids Oh and Amanda welcome
00:55:17The first race is a practice race. Okay time to perfect your strategy. You drop your egg. Don't worry
00:55:23It's a hard roll that you just pick it back up and keep going. All right, come to the starting line on
00:55:27your marks
00:55:29Get set
00:55:32Go
00:55:40That's it, that's it Timmy go go go
00:55:43Oh
00:55:45Great effort
00:55:47Great practice round. Okay, the real race starts in a few minutes. Do you stretches?
00:55:51How did I used to be so good at this as a kid?
00:55:53Think of it like this
00:55:55Look at your floral design and you have an imaginary axis going right down the middle of it
00:55:59You can distribute flowers on both sides. Well think of it the same way with the race
00:56:05Center the egg on the spoon on that same axis
00:56:08Center on the axis to create some balance
00:56:12So
00:56:13feeling confident
00:56:15About as confident as I can be after one attempt. Well good cuz I'm racing too. Oh
00:56:23Gotta make a friendly wager. I'm listening. Well if you win, I'll make you lunch
00:56:30If I win you have to listen to my Sunday sermon
00:56:34You
00:56:36Know what?
00:56:37Hey, you're on. All right
00:56:40Line up in the starting line first one to the finish
00:56:43Wings and get ready because this one's gonna be a lot faster the last one. Are you ready?
00:56:49on your mark
00:56:50Get set
00:56:52Go
00:56:55Don't drop it
00:56:59I'm a pastor. I mean never cheat
00:57:05Oh good job guys
00:57:10Good work Wow, you really got me I
00:57:15Don't think I've ever seen somebody look so happy to lose a bet. Well losing means I get to take you to lunch
00:57:23Well ladybug those are the four principles that I can teach you harmony contrast purpose and balance
00:57:30But there's still one left master for and earn the fifth though
00:57:35That one's in here. My dear you you have to discover it
00:57:38And in the meantime, you need to do the three P's of an expert floral arranger
00:57:43the
00:57:44three P's
00:57:46practice practice practice
00:57:54All right, almost there
00:58:00You
00:58:04It's incredible
00:58:14So this is what I wanted to show you
00:58:19There's snowdrops I had no idea what they're called it just thought they're pretty
00:58:27They're perfect
00:58:30Snow drops can grow in adverse conditions like frost but they also tend to be the first flowers to bloom in spring
00:58:39They kind of remind me of you
00:58:46Thank you for taking me here, oh, we're not done yet. Nope. We just getting started
00:58:53You
00:58:58So the other day at the raffle you were talking about how
00:59:04It was complicated your image and how the church saw you
00:59:09What did you mean by that?
00:59:11Yeah
00:59:13When I told you about my accident the other day I
00:59:18Wasn't able to tell you the whole story
00:59:21You see when I fell I lost my footing
00:59:27And one of my students
00:59:30He was tethered to me. He fell even further than I did and
00:59:37He wasn't as lucky
00:59:40He didn't make it no, he did thank God he did just
00:59:50He's in a wheelchair now
00:59:55That day goes by I don't think about that poor kid
00:59:59Blame myself I
01:00:02Can't even bring myself to rock climb again
01:00:07Sorry
01:00:11You know many ways I feel like moving out here it was just my attempt to
01:00:16Get away from the memory of it all
01:00:20Feel like such a hypocrite sometimes. No, I'm asking people to
01:00:25Find joy in their sorrow and here I am running from my own
01:00:32We all have chapters of our lives that we wish we could rewrite
01:00:39My dad would say without tests there could be no testimony
01:00:46Being open and vulnerable
01:00:50Shows your humanity
01:00:53It gives people hope I
01:00:57Really like that
01:01:01Thank you
01:01:20I

01:04:14Bravo
01:04:16the final principle of love a

01:11:56Lori I just wanted to say thank you for teaching me the five principles. I I
01:12:03Realized that they're all things that I've been missing in my own life. You've given me a
01:12:10Renewed sense of purpose on Easter. That's the most important lesson of all
01:12:16You

01:13:12Warm weather on an Easter Sunday doesn't get much better than that. It's just wonderful to see the best version of my daughter back
01:13:19joyful
01:13:21and hopeful
01:13:23You're my mom you have to say that
01:13:29I
01:13:42Did so many of these for other people and we never did one for him
01:13:48Thank you for organizing this Oh wasn't just me
01:13:53It wasn't yeah
01:13:56The pastor Derek called me and asked if it was okay
01:14:19I'm gonna go get our seats Amanda pastor
01:14:26You
01:14:34On this Easter Sunday, there is just one more fruit of the Holy Spirit left to talk about
01:14:43Love
01:14:46Today it's about a resurrection and in that resurrection
01:14:52love
01:14:54Wins you see God
01:14:57Loves all of us after all we are made in his image
01:15:06And yet I
01:15:10Realized I haven't been completely open about my own journey
01:15:15I
01:15:20Got places people in our lives for a reason and someone very special in my own life taught me the importance of being who
01:15:27God created me to be
01:15:36Before God's path led me here. I
01:15:41Was involved in the terrible rock climbing accident
01:15:45It was a moment that irrevocably changed several lives mine included
01:15:50And though I was lucky enough to have forgiveness from those around me. I
01:15:55Was unable
01:15:57To find it in my heart
01:16:00To forgive myself
01:16:04But today in the spirit of the resurrection
01:16:10I forgive
01:16:13Myself
01:16:16And
01:16:18I'm committed to embracing who he created me to be
01:16:23Including my love for rock climbing gift from God
01:16:27You see our relationship with God is rooted in love and forgiveness
01:16:33And just as God forgives us we too must learn to forgive each other and
01:16:41Ourselves
01:16:44After all forgiveness is the purest expression of love
01:16:52So on this Easter Sunday, let us walk this path of love together
01:17:13I
01:17:24Get making up for a late room
