00:00To help the local government units prepare for the earthquake and tsunami,

00:05the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council in Region 1

00:10is encouraging the use of the Rapid Earthquake Damage Assessment System.

00:14The details are reported by Anthony Ian Reyes of the Philippine Information Agency Region 1.

00:21The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council in Region 1

00:26is encouraging the use of the Rapid Earthquake Damage Assessment System, or REDAS,

00:30to help the local government units prepare for the earthquake and tsunami.

00:34Although LGUs are the first to be targeted during an earthquake,

00:38not all have the capacity required for effective preparation and response.

00:43According to Dr. Maria Leonila Bautista of the DOS TV Box,

00:46the REDAS gives the LGUs who conduct risk assessments

00:50the ability to use hazard simulation tools for earthquakes, floods, and tsunamis.

00:54REDAS is a hazard simulation tool from the word hazard and simulation.

00:59So first, it can simulate ground shaking hazards.

01:03If an earthquake happens, as I speak,

01:05we can simulate what the intensity will be in all places in the Philippines.

01:10The increasing effect of climate change increases the risk,

01:14which is why it is important to use science-based tools like REDAS

01:17to strengthen the preparedness and resilience of the communities.

01:20The RDRRMC also passed a resolution encouraging LGUs to use REDAS

01:26and hazard maps for a science-based preparation and response to earthquakes.

01:30Prevention and mitigation play a crucial role in disaster preparedness.

01:34They serve as a foundation of our resilience strategies,

01:37aiming to reduce risk before disasters strike.

01:40Our proactive approach will save lives,

01:42project infrastructure, and sustain economic progress.

01:45Climate change is rapidly increasing,

01:48which is why it is important to use science-based tools like REDAS

01:52to build a safer and more resilient community.
