00:00Quickly, do you think we ought to be sending government checks to dead people?
00:06No, Senator, I think that's poor management.
00:09During the pandemic, we sent out 1.4 billion dollars of checks to dead people, didn't we?
00:16I don't have the figure, Senator, but I wouldn't be surprised by that.
00:19And they were cashed, weren't they?
00:21They generally get cash whether they're dead or not.
00:23What does that tell you?
00:25Somebody's alive.
00:26Yep.
00:28Now, Senator Carper and I passed a bill.
00:30It took us two years to try to stop that.
00:37When you die, the state sends your name to the Social Security Administration.
00:42Your name goes on what's called the Death Master File.
00:45Yes, sir.
00:47I went to Social Security and I said, can I see the list?
00:51They said, sure.
00:53I said, who do you share this with?
00:54They said, nobody.
00:56We can't.
00:56We don't have statutory authority.
00:59So you don't share it with the do-not-pay folks at Treasury?
01:02They said, nope.
01:04It's against the law.
01:06Well, rather than argue with them, Senator Carper and I passed a bill.
01:10But believe it or not, to say Social Security, share the dead people list
01:16with the rest of government, for God's sakes.
01:18Put down the bong and share it with them.
01:22And believe it or not, we had opposition.
01:25So we had to agree to a three-year trial period.
01:30That three-year trial, we saved a bunch of money.
01:35That three-year trial period is up at the end of 2026.
01:39I've got another bill with Gary Peters to extend it, to make it permanent.
01:43You guys got any problem with that?
01:46Well, Senator, I cannot speak for the president or for Director Vogt.
01:49Oh, go ahead.
01:50But I can't.
01:52It's hard for me to imagine who would be opposed.
01:55Well, you'd be surprised.
