00:00Lady Gaga is finally opening up about her long-lost alter-ego, Joe Calderone.
00:07Joe's debut to the world was on the September 2010 cover of Japanese Men's Vogue,
00:12and then was also featured in the You & I music video.
00:19Gaga then made a notable appearance as the alter-ego,
00:22who's described as a mechanic from Sicily, at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards.
00:27There, Joe pulled off a memorable performance of Gaga's song,
00:30You & I, and presented Britney Spears with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award,
00:35where the two almost recreated Spears and Madonna's kiss at the same award show in 2003.
00:41Now, the Born This Way singer is revealing to them that the persona helped her come to terms
00:46with how she viewed men at the time.
00:48That was actually kind of a big moment for me as a woman,
00:51to put all the pent-up fear or anger I had about relationships into one character."
00:56Gaga continued,
00:58"'You & I' was actually, I think, the first video that I ever did where I played multiple mes,
01:02and I brought that back on Mayhem. But Joe was an important character for me.
01:06It's the way I explored what I was looking for in men, and also what I was maybe lacking in myself."
01:12Last month, Gaga told Vanity Fair's Polygraph Test that Joe was no longer with us.
01:16But when asked by them what she meant, Gaga said, was,
01:19"'The character is no longer with me, but I wish Joe all the best.'"
01:23The Oscar winner also spoke about her upcoming seventh studio album, Mayhem, and its themes.
01:29"'I was always kind of fascinated with some kind of inner torture since the beginning of my career.
01:33I think I've always felt a little bit at war with myself. Like there was a soft side of me,
01:38but then also this really intense side and a desire to be heard.
01:41On this album, I was taking a really long, hard look at the last 20 years,
01:46and I think it's interesting that I ended up calling my album Mayhem.'"
01:49The album will be released March 7.
