FunTranscript
00:00Almost 300 athletes, a lot of logistics with 15 different divisions, which is 29 different heats.
00:06It's a lot to take on, it's a lot to do, but I think the athletes are having a great time.
00:11I think we really tested for the fittest in each division, and I think things are going really, really well.
00:20Yes!
00:30I think the Games this year means more than I'll probably be able to express in words to a lot of these athletes.
00:37A lot of these athletes, myself included, when I got hurt, were told, like,
00:41we're done being athletes, we're done being competitive.
00:44Don't do this, don't do that, you can't do this, you can't do that.
00:51And for a lot of these athletes, especially a lot of the newer athletes,
00:55this is the first place that has told them, like, no, you can do this,
00:59and it may be hard, but hard things are good for you.
01:05Me specifically, I, you know, get hurt ten years ago,
01:09didn't know if I'd ever come back to be any form of a competitive athlete,
01:13and so instead of waiting for someone to build it, we built it ourselves.
01:17And I got to talk to so many athletes that have, you know, broke down in tears
01:25because it's so important to them that they have this space and they have this community.
01:32It's given, I think, a lot of these athletes, myself included, a reason to try harder,
01:38a reason to try new things, and a reason, a purpose, really,
01:42to continue to see ourselves as human.
01:49The work that we're doing is so important because I know from personal experience
01:55that people want to show what they can do.
02:02Seven years ago, I had a stroke.
02:04I was 25 years old, and I woke up, and I couldn't feel my face,
02:09and half was paralyzed, and my world literally flipped upside down.
02:15And I went to the ER and essentially was told,
02:19hey, you've had a stroke, you'll probably never lift anything heavy again,
02:26and they gave me a big orange bracelet that said, fall risk,
02:30and it felt like an identity of, you know, this has happened to you,
02:36and now your life has changed, and whatever you were doing previously,
02:40you need to alter that because of this situation.
02:44And I didn't like that.
02:48So I went back to the CrossFit gym, and that affiliate,
02:53they stood behind me when I was doing back step-ups,
02:56and when I was trying out new movements again, they literally had my back.
03:01And so understanding that it's not just a competition,
03:08but it's a pathway forward,
03:11because, you know, a burpee to most people is just miserable,
03:17but it's how I learned to get off the floor if I've fallen.
03:21And a dip to Kevin is how he gets in the car.
03:26It's how he gets on the couch.
03:28So it's not just a competition.
03:32I would say that the goal is for CrossFit to be CrossFit,
03:37and these athletes to be a part of it,
03:40and know that there's no division between an elite athlete, an adaptive athlete,
03:47and to let them know that they're part of the community.
03:50The real-world application that CrossFit creates,
03:54the functionality that CrossFit creates in its athletes,
03:58is, yeah, you can see it in everyday able-bodied athletes,
04:02but damn if it's not truly put on display by adaptive athletes.
04:07You're having people in wheelchairs do muscle-ups,
04:10and get up over curbs, and lift 100 pounds overhead,
04:14and do all these different kind of things, and that's great.
04:18But that means they get to be better fathers, they get to be better husbands,
04:22they get to be better wives, and mothers, and friends,
04:27because they do this.
04:34What's it like seeing the whole community come together like this?
04:37Dude, we have 276 adaptive athletes here, man.
04:40We had 30 at the CrossFit Games last year,
04:42102 at the Wheel of Games last year.
04:45This is insane.
04:47It's so cool. We have more spectators than I've ever seen at an adaptive event.
04:50This is what we've been working towards for 10 years now.
04:55The ripple effects in the CrossFit community,
04:58and affiliate community of the adaptive CrossFit Games,
05:01is pretty much my first thought while doing this.
05:08That's what I think about the most.
05:10I love the competition as a competitor myself.
05:13I love watching it.
05:14I love seeing these athletes put their heart and soul into it.
05:17But the whole reason I want to do this,
05:19the whole reason I think it's important for us to showcase these athletes
05:23isn't just because they're great athletes.
05:26I think the major reason, and my driving force,
05:29is that these athletes are representatives
05:32of people who are continually told that they can't, and they won't, and they shouldn't.
05:36And putting this on such a big stage,
05:39having so many people watch this,
05:41it's going to have this ripple effect that more and more adaptive athletes,
05:44more and more people who think they can't do something,
05:46are going to see these guys and walk into an affiliate and know that they can't.
05:50I work with them all the time at my gym.
05:53I've had so many athletes come in and they're like,
05:56I can't get off the ground by myself, I can't do floor transfers,
05:59I can't get myself in and out of my car.
06:01And they train with us for a little while,
06:03and they'll come smiling cheek to cheek in,
06:05like, hey, I just did my first floor transfer.
06:08I don't have to have someone pick me up if I fall out of my chair anymore.
06:11I don't have to have someone around me so I can shower anymore.
06:14And, like, that's the stuff.
06:16That's the stuff that, like, fires me up and, like, drives me to do all of this.
06:23I want this event to be visible and viewable
06:26for the next person that's put in the position I was 10 years ago.
06:30So when they wake up from surgery,
06:33and they think everything's over,
06:35they can see this event and they can know, no, it's not.
06:38I can do something, I can do anything I want to.
06:41And that's what I want this event to be.
06:43That is why this event is so important to me.
06:47And all these different PRs, all these different things we see this weekend,
06:52my brain goes immediately to, like, that's cool to watch,
06:56but the effects it has on their lives outside of this,
06:59to me, is hands down the coolest thing we can see.
07:06And that's all I can say.
07:20Every day at any moment, there are people all over the world
07:24who are heading to their gym or to their garage
07:27where they're going to push themselves hard.
07:30And they're going to get healthier and fitter
07:32than they ever could have imagined.
07:34Members of this community, they are CrossFit.
07:38CrossFit is a technology that allows people to grab health
07:43and fitness in their life by the horns
07:46and steer it in a direction that will
07:48benefit their lives long term.
07:49My name is Denise Thomas.
07:51And 17 years ago, CrossFit literally
07:53changed my life, not just personally, but professionally.
07:58I'm an athlete, and I'm a coach.
07:59I love coaching.
08:01But really, when it all comes down to it,
08:03I'm a gigantic CrossFit nerd.
08:05And on this CrossFit podcast, we're going to dig deep.
08:08I want everyone.
08:09I love doing this.
08:09I want everyone you love doing this, right?
08:11Because I just know how well it works.
08:13And if you're going to spend time in a gym,
08:16there's nothing else I want you doing.
08:18With people in our community who are out there changing,
08:22and better than that, saving lives.
08:24The kids, they were in quarantine the longest.
08:27We were seeing diabetes on the rise for kids.
08:31I'm at home, and I'm like, I've got this experience.
08:34I've got all of these qualifications.
08:38I can do this.
08:39I can start something in Detroit for the kids.
08:42Join me as I get to know these incredible humans.
08:46As a scientist and psychiatrist, I
08:48took this very nerdy science, cell biology path
08:53to get to the conclusions that a lot of you already know.
08:56Go do CrossFit.
08:57Together, their stories are the story of CrossFit.
09:00And I saw that with my training with my brothers,
09:02at a point they were able to beat me in a workout.
09:06And I did not like that.
09:07But I can tell you this, it made me a better athlete.
09:10And why CrossFit is more relevant than ever.
09:14We're spending more than any other country on health care.
09:18And 90% of it is $4.5 trillion that we
09:20spend on health care in the US.
09:22And 90% of that is going towards chronic disease.
09:25So get the CrossFit podcast wherever it is.
09:28You like to get your podcasts.
09:29New episodes will launch starting February 11th.
09:33So go on then, hit that button, and subscribe now.
09:41Welcome to CrossFit Mayhem.
09:42This is, of course, the home of the legendary Rich Froning,
09:46Jr. And of course, you're tuned in to watch
09:51the live announcement of 25.1.
09:58Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
10:00I'm Rich Froning.
10:01We're here at CrossFit Mayhem.
10:02About to do 25.1 tomorrow.
10:04First open announcement ever here at CrossFit Mayhem.
10:06It'll be Friday night lights feel,
10:08having everybody here at the gym,
10:09surrounded by all of our community.
10:12So I'm looking forward to it.
10:14We're at the dress reversal of 25.1.
10:17It's so much fun.
10:18I'm so excited.
10:20Yeah, so we talked weeks ago.
10:21And Dave kind of, hey, are you going to do it?
10:23Will you do the open announcement?
10:25We'll see what happens tomorrow.
10:27Yeah, so I think the last it stood,
10:29I told Dave last week, I think I was about 90% in.
10:31I think we're more towards like 99% today.
10:35You know, wild card tomorrow morning, how I sleep.
10:37You know how it goes.
10:38So we've been through the schedule.
10:40We've gone through the walkthrough.
10:41And now we're going to do an actual rehearsal,
10:43where we kind of go through all the elements, top to bottom.
10:45We can time things in the truck, make
10:47sure the graphics look pretty.
10:48They come up when they're supposed to.
10:49The people walk in when they're supposed to.
10:50And all the things kind of move in order.
10:52This crap takes a lot of planning, and a lot of practice,
10:55and a lot of people thinking about a lot of details.
10:57So practice makes perfect.
10:59So we're setting up here.
11:00We can't be in here.
11:01It's kind of secret, I think.
11:02So we're going to head up to my barn,
11:04do some training up there.
11:07Guess this would be ground zero for Froning Farms.
11:11Pretty cool to look out your front window
11:12and see bison hanging out.
11:14Buffalo, bison, whatever you want to call them.
11:17A little over 20 now.
11:18Obviously, if I get out there tomorrow,
11:20no expectations, because Hatfield's
11:23an incredible athlete, up-and-comer.
11:25Roman's been here for a long time, super good athlete,
11:28well-rounded.
11:29And then Haley is a psycho, right?
11:32And I'm old, you know?
11:33So I'd be lying to say that if I got out there tomorrow
11:36and I'm not going to try to win.
11:38So we'll see.
11:40It'll be fun.
11:40It'll be cool.
11:44What are you doing here?
11:44You're going to be biking?
11:46Yes, biking and shooting arrows, a little therapeutic.
11:50A little on 1,000, and then take my time.
11:54First arrow's pretty high heart rate.
11:57Settle in, shoot the other two, try to make good shots.
12:05I might have to, bro.
12:06This is my kind of jam.
12:08I think I've been doing, dude, I did like run,
12:10shoot in my old gym in like 2018.
12:12Everybody was calling me crazy.
12:14Never thought I'd be doing a CrossFit Open announcement
12:17workout, much less doing it with Rich.
12:21So definitely marked that off the bucket list.
12:23Definitely something I didn't see coming.
12:25But definitely someone to look up to.
12:27It was like a role model.
12:31Can I be that one day?
12:32Who knows?
12:33I guess only time will tell.
12:34How many CrossFit games have you been to?
12:37Eight.
12:38You've been to eight CrossFit games?
12:39Yeah.
12:40And they were consecutive, other than my year off.
12:42So it was a really long time.
12:45That's why I'm like, I'm so glad I took the year off.
12:47I'm like, dang, if this year would be 10,
12:51people can quit after 10.
12:54So I took the year of 2023 completely off.
12:58Before that, I got to a point where it was not fun anymore.
13:00I was really struggling with depression, anxiety,
13:03just from sport.
13:04But it was one of the most rewarding journeys.
13:06But also on the mental side of things, I feel so much better.
13:10I genuinely enjoy CrossFit again.
13:12I love being around people.
13:13I love training.
13:14I love competing.
13:15And just putting in all of that work,
13:18and the year I took off was completely worth it.
13:20It's pain.
13:23My nail fell off.
13:25Beauty is pain.
13:27So before going into the Open, I used to get super stressed.
13:29Because I'm like, I got to do good.
13:30Because I'm one of the top five in the world.
13:32And if I'm not, then I'm off track.
13:34But now it's like, OK, let's just
13:36use this as a chance to throw down with your community,
13:39connect with people, and get to do cool things like this.
13:42Oh, there's a song playing right now
13:44that I get to hear tonight live.
13:46It's called Russian Roulette.
13:47I'm going to a Nessa Barrett concert tonight.
13:50So that will be fun.
13:53Can't wait.
13:54Got to put my nail back on, though.
13:57What day is today?
13:58Oh, today is Open 5.1.
14:02We make breakfast, oatmeal, for me, for my friends, for him too.
14:08We feel happy because we live in Cookville.
14:12It's a small city, very safe.
14:15It's very important for me, like a father,
14:18because I really care about my family, about my son,
14:22about my wife.
14:23So you make breakfast for everyone?
14:25Yeah, for my friends, yeah.
14:29I'm like chef today.
14:34I was like, hello.
14:36Hello.
14:38What are we doing right now?
14:40Go to daycare.
14:42Yes.
14:42Go drop him off?
14:43Yeah.
14:44Let's go.
14:45My son go to daycare.
14:48He have friends, also English friends,
14:50because we speak in Russian with him all day.
14:58What did he say?
14:59He keep snacks for when I pick him up.
15:05He feel like boss, yeah.
15:07What did he say?
15:09I think he feel like boss.
15:12He's controlling everything right now.
15:15Snacks, music.
15:18I'm so excited for this season because I was injured.
15:22I feel more motivation because I feel hungry.
15:25This is my year, I feel I win games.
15:28Also, I always coming for first place.
15:32I never think about like top 10 or top three.
15:35Always come for first place, yeah.
15:37Yeah, Roman's back.
15:39Where are we going right now?
15:41Yeah, we're going to daycare.
15:42Daycare.
15:45Hey, hey.
15:46Hey, hey.
15:49Say bye.
15:50Bye.
15:51Bye.
15:52See you later.
15:57I mean, we've got, what, over an hour to go.
16:02And it is like I'm, look, if we're
16:04going to be real for a second, like I've already got the nurse
16:07and I don't usually have that.
16:09I'm not even competing and I went to bed at 8 o'clock
16:11last night and Haley's like, my voice
16:13is hoarse from going to a concert last night.
16:15I'm like, yeah, you were.
16:16Yeah, you were.
16:18I ought to be young again.
16:22I went to a concert.
16:24It was really fun.
16:26What are we eating right now?
16:28Grilled chicken sandwich.
16:30Hormone free.
16:31I don't know if that's true.
16:33Free range.
16:36Wheat bun, organic.
16:38Rich's diet, what I've been seeing,
16:40I've never seen him eating anything else but this.
16:43So once a time, this only happens on game day.
16:45Yeah.
16:45Well, I mean, it paid off for you.
16:47When every day is a game day.
16:48It paid off for you, right?
16:50Feeling good, feeling ready, yeah.
16:52Yeah, it feels so comfortable because it's
16:54like you're doing it at home, yeah.
16:57No travel, no stress, no hotels.
17:01Oh, so comfortable.
17:03I told people, you need games, you need move.
17:06CrossFit Games here, to Cookville.
17:09I think one time when I was talking to Roman,
17:12he introduced me to somebody.
17:13And he was like, hi, I'm Roman Krenkoff, ninth place
17:16CrossFit Games, Austin Hatfield, 10th place CrossFit Games.
17:19So he was like, you've got that one up on me.
17:21But every time I try to see Roman,
17:23I just try to mess with him a little bit.
17:25I'm like, like we were talking earlier, we were like, hey,
17:27I'm going to win.
17:28Woo!
17:32It's freaking go time, baby.
17:34I want to cry, I'm so excited.
17:36Are you excited to be here?
17:37Yeah.
17:39Say, go Roman.
17:40Go Roman.
17:41I have little Oakley.
17:43She's got her little earmuffs on in case it gets too loud.
17:4623 minutes away from the kickoff of 25.1.
17:49So we're bringing Sexy back is what we're doing, Ian.
17:51Sorry, that's a short answer.
17:52We're bringing Sexy back.
17:55Hello, I'm your host, Rory McKernan.
17:56So happy to share our home with you.
17:58And of course, you're tuned in to watch
18:00the live announcement of 25.1.
18:04And bad news if you're not here, because as you can tell,
18:07we're having a party at CrossFit Mayhem.
18:09We've got a crowd of about 500 to 600 people
18:11here to watch three athletes throw down.
18:14All right, ladies and gentlemen, we
18:15know why you guys are really here.
18:17You want to hear the announcement of the workout.
18:19A 15-minute MRAP, lateral burpee over the dumbbell.
18:24Dumbbell hang power clean to overhead and walking lunge.
18:28You think if we're loud enough, maybe you
18:30would join us for the workout?
18:32I mean, you know.
18:33You know that I know.
18:34Just tell them.
18:35Know what?
18:36Tell them that we're going to have you work out,
18:38ladies and gentlemen.
18:39Rich Froning is coming back to the competition floor for 25.1.
18:43Man, that was great to have Rich back, wasn't it?
18:46I got, like, I usually get goosebumps,
18:48but that was the next level.
18:50When the shirt came off, I mean, I
18:54went from announcer to fanboy in, like, 0.2 seconds.
18:59I mean, I can do everything.
19:00It's just going to hurt.
19:01These guys are going to go really fast, so.
19:03What are you waiting for?
19:04Let's go.
19:06Going in 3, 2, 1, go.
19:14The return of the champ, Rich Froning
19:17donning the Rocky Balboa American flag shorts.
19:21That was really hard.
19:23I went out or went way faster than I wanted to.
19:25If I was to do that by myself with nobody watching,
19:29I would not have done that.
19:31Austin and Roman took off real hot.
19:34Austin Hadfield moving a little quicker on the burpees.
19:37This is a burpee workout, honestly.
19:40Your heart rate kind of comes down on the dumbbell,
19:42but, like, the lunge is really starting
19:44to calm down a little bit.
19:45Austin Hadfield, your leader, and he
19:48seems like he is speeding up on that return lunge.
19:52I think he knows there is blood in the water.
19:54Boz, we've got the battles of strategy.
19:56It seems to be paying off in your favor,
19:57but Rich Froning is pulling up into second
20:00on the run with Kretikoff.
20:01And I slowly started to reel Roman in on the burpees,
20:03and I was like, ah, I might as well.
20:0910 seconds remaining.
20:12Took 10th last year as a rookie.
20:15In 2024, in 2025, he starts it off
20:19with an open announcement win.
20:21Austin Hadfield takes 25.1.
20:2725.1 open results.
20:29Austin Hadfield scored 334.
20:32Rich Froning, 309.
20:34Four reps ahead of Roman Kretikoff and Haley Adams.
20:38Man, it was awesome.
20:39I'm glad we did it.
20:40Glad that workout's over so now I don't have to do it tomorrow
20:43and I will not be redoing that.
20:45So, man, it was fun.
20:46It was cool.
20:47Man, there's just something about the Open.
20:49I've had a love-hate over the years.
20:51When I was competing, I hated it because you put
20:54all the stress on yourself.
20:55Now, it's become way more about the community
20:57and giving the people that walk in this door something
21:01to train for, people that walk into any affiliate door,
21:03something to train for, something for us
21:04all to come together.
21:05Over the years, it's kind of taken on less stress
21:09and more, I guess, fun and celebration
21:11of what we're about.
21:12Seeing the community come out and to support
21:15what we're doing, not just the athletes,
21:18is really the whole point of what makes the Open great.
21:21And it's like, yes, the athletes are cool.
21:23The announcers are super fun.
21:25But this is meant to celebrate what we all do.
21:28We all do it in different ways, vary by degree, not kind
21:32kind of a thing.
21:33But it's all centered around the same thing,
21:35a love and passion for life, a love and passion
21:38for opportunities to be with other people,
21:40and a love and passion for CrossFit.
21:48Me and my sister, we'd always done the same sports
21:51in high school.
21:52When we went off to college, she continued to do CrossFit.
21:55And I ran track.
21:58My name is Sydney Wells.
21:59And I have been to the Games one year in 2023.
22:04Once I got on with college sports,
22:05I actually got a full-time job.
22:07I didn't know if I'd ever compete at anything again.
22:10I realized I was missing something mentally
22:12and physically challenging for my life.
22:14I guess what keeps me coming in to the gym every day
22:18is, of course, my goals.
22:19Like, I have really big goals for myself.
22:21But also, I just really like inspiring others,
22:24whether it's them watching my progress throughout the years
22:28or seeing me come in every day putting my best foot forward.
22:32I just want to show others that they can do the same thing.
22:45I've been with Proven since the day I started competing.
22:49It is Tia Claritini and Shane Orr's gym.
22:53You get to train with the best athletes in the world.
22:57It's crazy to even think that I'm training
23:00next to Tia every single day.
23:02I'm, like, scared, like, of 30.
23:05Maybe I'm just surrounded by all these young people
23:07that it makes me feel old.
23:09Unfortunately, I'll be turning 30 this year.
23:11I do think that I've grown a lot as an athlete,
23:14both physically and mentally.
23:17It's not about being perfect.
23:18It's about showing up and being consistent.
23:21And I just know how to embrace challenges a lot better
23:24than I did in the beginning.
23:27I would absolutely love nothing more
23:29than to be competing with my sister in Albany this year.
23:32It's kind of crazy.
23:33We've never competed at the Games together.
23:36We're twins.
23:36If she can do it, I can do it.
23:38We'll see who's the better twin here.
23:54I just want to do as well as I can.
23:57And I want to make myself proud.
24:00I want to make Kyle proud, my coach.
24:01Basically, make my training worth it.
24:05My name is Emily Rolfe.
24:06And I've been to the Games six years.
24:12In 2024, I finished on the podium at the Games finally.
24:16And that's kind of been a goal throughout my career,
24:18I guess.
24:19So personally, it was a really good achievement.
24:27My training has not changed one bit
24:29after finishing on the podium.
24:31I would say the month after the Games, yeah,
24:33I did whatever I wanted.
24:34But then it was right back into training.
24:40I train at CrossFit C-Level.
24:42They're super supportive of me.
24:44We're number two biggest fan, number three biggest fan,
24:47and number one biggest fan right there.
24:49It's really cool to have the support.
24:53My name's Kyle.
24:53I'm Emily's husband, coach, and all-around assistant.
25:00I think it's really an advantage to have someone
25:02who knows me inside and out as my coach.
25:04You know, he sees how I'm training.
25:06He sees how I'm recovering.
25:07He sees what I'm eating, how I'm sleeping.
25:09He knows how I work.
25:10He knows what makes me tick.
25:11And he can program accordingly.
25:14As an athlete, she's fantastic.
25:16Ask me what she's like as a wife.
25:17Even better.
25:23Other than being an elite CrossFit athlete,
25:26I work as an MRT.
25:27So I work in medical radiography.
25:30It's a fast-moving environment, which I like.
25:32If I work a day shift at work, I'm
25:35either up at 5.30 training before work
25:37and then after work again, or I take a lunch break
25:41and I go get a session in there.
25:43So we're in a garage gym called the Unaffiliated Garage.
25:48It's busy, but make it work.
25:50You got to.
25:53My mindset going into 2025 I would
25:55say is no different than previous years.
25:57Just continuously climb and keep grasping for higher.
26:02Keep improving, which I have been.
26:04So just keep riding this train.
26:22I don't know if I can describe 6 PM in one word.
26:25But if I had two words, it'd be controlled chaos.
26:33Each of our classes has its own unique characteristic.
26:38The 6 PM class is a little unique
26:40in that it used to be a class that we
26:41had a hard time filling.
26:44And over the last year or two, it's
26:46become our only capped class because we will now
26:49have upwards of 23 to 26, 27 members in that class.
26:54So we kind of become its own little family.
26:58Some of the groups in 6 PM, they're
27:01either highly competitive or they're kind of just
27:05starting out.
27:07It is controlled chaos.
27:08It is chaos.
27:10Everybody just kind of understands
27:11how busy that class is.
27:12And everybody loves it so much and wants
27:14to be a part of it that they help
27:16me kind of control all of it.
27:19Nobody's ever interfering with each other.
27:21Everybody works really well.
27:22Everybody shares a barbell if they need to.
27:24If we have to run two full heats on a workout
27:26with like a 10 minute delay, it's not a big deal.
27:29They're so good about just listening.
27:32They actually listen, unlike some other classes.
27:40We do kind of a social beer club once a month
27:43where a group of us will go out and visit
27:45a local small business, try them,
27:47just get outside these four walls.
27:49Maybe someone from the 5 AM class
27:50may meet someone from the 7 PM class
27:52where they usually wouldn't.
27:53That gives them an opportunity to find
27:55camaraderie and family and home.
27:59And keeping a nice tight core.
28:01We're going to go five straight on pullovers.
28:046 PM class is unique in that I think
28:07it's kind of a really cool cross section
28:09of not just our gym, but I think of kind of society.
28:14You have a couple of our coaches that
28:15may attend that class, and then you
28:17have some people that didn't really
28:18know CrossFit from anything before they joined here.
28:21And now they're definitely getting
28:23outside their comfort zone.
28:24We have young kids who are just trying
28:27to move and stay healthy.
28:29You have kind of the three fire breathers
28:31in there as well that like to go head to head
28:33and enjoy that push that they give each other.
28:37A little friendly rivalry, a little competition every day.
28:40Me, Brandon, Dustin.
28:43We had this thing where we'd always send like a Matt
28:45Frazier meme over to whoever won the workout that day.
28:48Progressed into what if we did a leader's jersey.
28:50Whoever won the workout that day would wear the shirt
28:52the next day, and everybody else would have to look at him
28:54wearing the dang leader jersey, and then
28:56do the Matt Frazier pose.
28:57So we always kind of know who the top dog in the gym is.
28:59Usually me, almost never Brandon.
29:02I mean, I'm just the old guy trying to just
29:04hold on to whatever I got.
29:05I was lucky enough to win yesterday,
29:07so I am wearing the leader jersey today.
29:09And still!
29:11This is my social interaction, and I'm
29:13just proud to have these guys as buddies.
29:15And they want to compete with me.
29:16They want to compete next to me and against me.
29:17So yeah, I'm really appreciative of these guys.
29:19He's got to do his laundry again tonight.
29:22A lot of the uniqueness of our gym and our classes
29:25is the way each class becomes its own family.
29:29They don't miss a class.
29:30They show up for each other, and they support each other
29:32through everything.
29:34Cancer survivors and all those things in that class.
29:38It's a microcosm of not only incendia,
29:41but I think it's a microcosm of society, which is really cool.
29:55All right, ladies and gentlemen,
29:57it's finally time to kick it off.
29:59For the official start of 25.1, the competition director,
30:03Adrian Bosman.

32:15Well, Bos, we're here.
32:16Dude, we are here, and these guys are going crazy.
32:17The environment is absolutely electric, right?
32:18Yeah, absolutely.
32:19This is where it's at.
32:20And listen, Bella gave us a great tease.
32:2125.1 gave us great memories, but to me, it was long and simple.
32:22If I could define it, it was a steady pace.
32:23It was a steady pace.
32:24It was a steady pace.
32:25It was a steady pace.

34:50It was a steady pace.
34:51It was a steady pace.
34:52It was a steady pace.
34:53Well, what I'm seeing is that we've got some crafty veterans versus, you know, some newcomers
34:59to the game.
35:00I mean, I know that Well's name is well-known, pun intended, and often I think that Brooke
35:05has kind of created a big shadow for her sister, but I think it's time for her to step into
35:08her own light, and, man, she's got to have some fire in the belly from last year.
35:12There's no doubt.
35:13I have a complete agreeance there, and I think it's an opportunity for her to step into the
35:16forefront, even after last year with the setback, getting an opportunity to miss out on the
35:20games last year due to some lack of standards being hit, right, and now what a great place
35:24to showcase the fitness and the focus that she's put into practice over the last calendar
35:28training year.
35:29Absolutely.
35:30Can't wait to see what she's bringing this season.
35:32We've also got Emily Rohl.
35:34Now, several-time CrossFit Games competitor, six to be exact, she's bringing a lot of competition
35:38to the floor today.
35:39Absolutely, and I think Emily has made a name for herself that the longer the event goes,
35:44the stronger she is.
35:45However, you can't discount 10 years of experience.
35:48That speaks to her well-roundedness, so we'll see what she's got here today.
35:52You talk about the longer the test goes, the more success she tends to have.
35:55Well, with the announcement looming and us not having any idea what we're exactly in
35:59store for, it seems like it's only appropriate to get ready to announce that time, so let's
36:04go down to the competition floor to put the speculation to bed.
36:07For the announcement of 25.2, I'm going to hand this over to CrossFit affiliate, Rob,
36:25and CrossFit Games athlete, Tammy.
36:29Thank you, Dave.
36:30I'm Rob Best.
36:31I'm the CEO and founder of the Barbell Saves Project.
36:38We are a non-profit CrossFit affiliate right here in Phoenix, Arizona, and to learn a little
36:44bit more, I'm going to hand it over to my good friend, Tammy.
36:47Thank you, Rob.

37:32Are you guys all excited?
37:34All right.
37:38All right.
37:40One more shameless plug for thebarbellsavesproject.com.
37:43Follow us.
37:45My good friend, Rob Best.
37:48All right.
37:51Without further ado, I hold here 25.2.
38:03It's going to be a repeat of 22.3.
38:14If you don't remember this one, I'm going to read it off for you.
38:1721 pull-ups, 42 double-unders, 21 thrusters, 18 chest-to-bar pull-ups, 36 double-unders,
38:2518 thrusters, 15 bar muscle-ups, 30 double-unders, 15 thrusters.
38:33Athletes have a 12-minute time cap.
38:36Good luck.
38:37Let's go.
38:38Oh my gosh.
38:39A repeat.
38:40We knew it.
38:41I didn't think it was going to be this one.
38:50I remember when I first took this workout on, I ripped my hands for the first time.
38:54So I'll tell you what, looking forward to this redo.
38:56Maybe not me.
38:57If it is your first time taking on this workout, now that we've heard it, for it to count,
39:01it's going to need to look like this.
39:13CrossFit Games Open Workout 25.2 is 22.3.
39:21For time, each athlete will complete 21 pull-ups, then 42 double-unders, then 21 thrusters using
39:35the lightest weight.
39:39The next round begins with 18 chest-to-bar pull-ups, then 36 double-unders, and 18 thrusters
39:47using a heavier weight.
39:50The final round starts with 15 bar muscle-ups, 30 double-unders, and finally 15 thrusters
40:01using the heaviest weight.
40:04Your score will be the total time taken to complete the workout.
40:08If you do not complete the workout, then your score will be the total number of repetitions
40:13completed before the 12-minute time cap.

40:29The 2025 CrossFit Games 25.2 Open Announcement is presented by Rogue, Don't Weaken, the U.S.
40:38Border Patrol, the Enagent of Strength, and Yeti, Built for the Wild.
40:52Welcome back to the announcement of 25.2 presented by the United States Border Patrol.
40:58We are here live having a party in Peoria, Arizona at CrossFit Incendia.
41:02We want to give a special thank you and shout out to Peoria Fire Medical Department for
41:08being here with us today and keeping our community safe.
41:11It's a treat being here at CrossFit Incendia.
41:13Listen in to how owner David Bettis and his wife found CrossFit later in life as adults
41:18and have cultivated such an amazing community here at Incendia.
41:29I joined CrossFit Incendia in 2013 and then took about six months to convince Cindy to
41:36try it with me.
41:37I enjoyed it.
41:38Forty-three years old and I was pushing myself out of my comfort zone.
41:42We were gym members for seven years before we actually purchased the gym.
41:49It was a big undertaking for us to take over the gym.
41:51We've always wanted to own a small business, so when the opportunity presented itself,
41:55we were excited to jump at it and figure it out, and we've been doing that for the past
41:59seven years.
42:00As soon as I met them, they're just those type of people that want to bring everybody
42:04in.
42:05They're very home feeling.
42:06We try to stay up to date on all of the latest equipment.
42:09We always have enough room for everybody, no matter how many people there are.
42:13It's really a spot that you can do it all.
42:15You can come in and really hit any piece that you want to hit.
42:19So we were fortunate enough to build this gym out from scratch, made specifically for
42:23our affiliate here in Peoria, which is really cool.
42:29So the thing I think I'm most proud of in Incendia and the four walls, the box that
42:33we call it, is what it's developed, family.
42:37We came here for the community, we stayed for the community, and the child care is amazing.
42:41The kids actually ask to come to daddy's gym more often than any other place that we go
42:47to.
42:48As a community, we support each other.
42:50It's a microcosm of something so much bigger.
42:53Those are some of the things that remind Cindy and I why we did this in the first place.
43:03David, or maybe I should call you Rich Froning, in our Rocky Balboa shorts.
43:13You and your wife found CrossFit later in life.
43:19What are some of those lessons that you've learned in the walls here at Incendia, just
43:23through the community?
43:25Just that you can do this at any age, any size, any shape, any experience.
43:31My wife and I are in our 50s still doing this, mixing it up with the teenagers and
43:34the 20-something-year-olds, and watching this transpire and happen in a place that we were
43:40fortunate enough to come across 12 years ago is awesome.
43:42David, the CrossFit Open is one of my favorite parts every season.
43:48It's one of everyone's favorite parts of doing CrossFit.
43:51It's got to be special to host an announcement at your own affiliate.
43:55What does this opportunity mean to you and your wife, Cindy?
43:58I mean, look at this.
43:59This is the best community out there.
44:08I know it.
44:09Where else can you have this many people taking off at 1 o'clock on a Thursday to come support
44:16these awesome athletes?
44:17My wife Cindy and I couldn't be more proud.
44:20I knew I was going to get you to cry, David.
44:24Thank you so much for being here with us at Incendia.
44:27One of the most special parts of the CrossFit Open this season is the spirit of the Open Award.
44:33This is where you and your own communities can nominate your members of people that you
44:38think are lights in your affiliates, and it brings back the heart of what we all love
44:43about CrossFit, which is the community.
44:46Use hashtag SOTO2025 to share your nominations with us, all sponsored by Rogue.
44:56This week's winner was Stephanie Hamlin from CrossFit Structure.
45:00She was shared with us for being a light in her community and bringing the energy and
45:05excitement to all of the classes.
45:07Not only that, but she also is helping other women in her affiliate find confidence and
45:12love for their bodies.
45:14Again, Stephanie Hamlin, week one winner of the Spirit of the Open Award.
45:19Absolutely amazing.
45:21Adrian, it's almost that time.
45:23How are we feeling?
45:25Oh my goodness, Bella.
45:26I'm fired up and ready to rock and roll this thing.
45:2825.2 is going to be 22.3, and what that means is that you walk into a regular gym, people
45:33ask, hey, what's your bench press, bro?
45:35In CrossFit, it's what is your Fran time, and this gives me complete Fran vibes.
45:40That is going to be the skill set tested.
45:42But that leads me directly into our recipe for success that's going to be presented by
45:47Tempo, and that is skills to pay the bills.
45:50This means there's going to be a high demand on those skills, but do you have the awareness
45:54to know how to break them up and how to apply them?
45:56And then power and precision.
45:58These double unders matter, folks.
46:00They were overlooked in 22.3, but in 25.2, in order to have a good time, you're going
46:05to have to be accurate.
46:07But the anticipation has reached its apex, and it is time to work out.
46:12I'm going to send it down to the competition floor with Adrian Bossman.
46:18CrossFit and Sandia, are you ready?
46:20We're starting in ten seconds.
46:24Let's go!
46:29Three, two, one, go!
46:39Yeah, and as we see here, we knew these athletes were going to be off to a fast start.
46:43We have got some great information for you guys, because our sport is measurable, observable,
46:49and repeatable.
46:50This is a repeat workout.
46:52Boss, we know that Sydney Wells has a previous best in 2022 for this workout in six minutes
46:57and 31 seconds, but Emily Rolfs is listed at five minutes and 13 seconds.
47:03What's that tell you about what we're about to see go down?
47:05Well, I think we're going to see who's improved over those last couple of years.
47:09I mean, both athletes in their promo claiming that they're getting better and better.
47:13Well, let's see.
47:14Let's prove it.
47:15I think that in order to be in the top spot, we're going to be looking at some sub-five
47:18times, so maybe we'll see one here today.
47:20Yeah, you mentioned sub-five times historically.
47:22Mal O'Brien has the best female time in this workout, listed at 4'11",
47:27and Scott Tetlow on the male side at 4'07".
47:31That is blazing and cooking fast.
47:33And an important thing for our viewers to know at home, they're going to see those
47:36placards, those scoreboards in the back.
47:38It's basically a race to 216 reps.
47:40Yeah, and these athletes are flying already.
47:42I mean, we're at rep number 70.
47:44They're neck and neck here.
47:45I mean, it's going to be a mental battle to see who can hang on.
47:49And then the question is, do you get demoralized if you have to break one of those skills up?
47:53That's exactly right.
47:54It's easy to get caught up in a workout just like this, folks.
47:57If you're watching at home, you know the adrenaline is through the roof.
48:00The crowd environment is absolutely unmatched here at Incendia today.
48:04And we got Emily Rolfe leading the way down into round two.
48:07Back for now, Chester Bar-Pelos.
48:09Crafty Canadian veteranship on display right there.
48:13This is a many, many times games athlete on full display here.
48:18But Sidney's right there with her.
48:20I mean, we're only talking the difference of a couple of reps right now.
48:23Well, Buzz, we talk about athletic history.
48:25We know Sidney Wells ran track at Mizzou.
48:27She specialized in the 2 and the 400.
48:29You think if she can hit this just right skills-wise, this energy system could be there for her.
48:34Yeah, absolutely.
48:35No stranger to that kind of glycolytic effort.
48:37But Emily Rolfe choosing not to break anything up yet and just like right to work on those double unders.
48:43I'm curious to see what each of these athletes is going to use as a strategy on their bond muscle-ups
48:47because I don't think you're going to get away with doing those unbroken
48:50unless you're really, really confident there.
48:52That's right. Emily Rolfe ahead by about 5 to 6 reps here.
48:55Making a transition right to the barbell for her next set of now 18 thrusters.
49:00And just looking smooth. No hesitation getting to that bar.
49:03Seeing Sidney take just a little bit longer to pick it up.
49:09And Buzz, the nice part about Emily now having the lead
49:11is that she's playing with house money in regards to the fact that she knows
49:14Sidney can't just magically go rep for rep faster than her on a thruster
49:20so she can pace and be a little bit more in the dictatorship role.
49:23Yeah, absolutely. I do see Sidney picking up the pace though.
49:26She's got the faster cycle rate on the barbell.
49:28But I think Emily's more confident when we get back to the pull-up bar.
49:32So I also think Emily knows that.
49:34So she can get there first.
49:36I bet you she's able to pretty confidently stay out front.
49:39But man, Sidney right there with her.
49:41That's right. Emily with about a two-rep lead on the bar muscle-ups.
49:44Sidney taking a moment to gather herself.
49:46Now she's getting started.
49:47Emily at 155 and Sidney four reps behind right now.
49:51I mean, hard to believe that we are already into the third and final round, Adrian.
49:57This is a blazing pace.
49:59Oh, and we've got Sidney breaking it up.
50:01Emily's still going strong.
50:04Emily hanging on for a big set.
50:06And you'd think this was a part of her game plan the entire time, Buzz.
50:10She paced it just enough to have these reps in reserve
50:14so that then she could dictate how she needed to break up the bar muscle-ups.
50:17Yeah, I mean, we're looking at 171 reps being the target
50:21when these athletes have done those bar muscle-ups.
50:24So we're getting pretty close on Emily's side.
50:26I can't see the score for Sidney.
50:28Looks like she's just a couple reps back.
50:33We're at 166 for Emily Rolfe.
50:35She's off the bar, onto the barbell.
50:37Or onto the jump rope, I'm sorry.
50:40Go, go, go!
50:46A reminder, 4'11'' is the fastest time we saw from the women in 2022.
50:524'11'' by Mal O'Brien.
50:54That's unreal. I mean, that's already passed.
50:56These athletes are going to put up a very impressive time.
50:59But to think that we've already got athletes in the gate at this point.
51:03That's crazy.
51:04And this is where she's taking a moment, trying to gather herself
51:06so she can ensure that she finishes with an unbroken set of thrusters
51:09and she can hold on to the barbell.
51:10And I bet you she's going sub-5 with only 15 reps to go.
51:15I think she can do it.
51:18Sidney in the back with a few snafus on the jump rope.
51:20Emily is now taking a greater lead.
51:23Man, and Emily Rolfe is so stoic.
51:25You would never know how hard she's working just by watching her.
51:28Oh, and I spoke too soon.
51:29We see a little effort on the face there.
51:32But Sidney picking it up in double time to get on the barbell.
51:34Look at that cycle rate.
51:35And this is what we've got to watch.
51:36We know that the cycle rate is a little faster for Sidney.
51:38Emily chose to break and her pace has slowed with only 4 reps left.
51:42What are we going to see?
51:43I just saw the hand go up for the judge.
51:45We know she's getting close.
51:46I don't think Sidney can get there.
51:48Hand goes up for Sidney.
51:51Last rep for Emily.
51:52And that's it for Emily Rolfe.
51:54She will take 25.2 in person.
51:57And Sidney right behind her at 524, unofficial.
52:00And Sidney can't be mad about that.
52:02I mean, almost a minute improved over her last attempt at this in 2022.
52:07Wow.
52:08What a performance by both women.
52:10That's right.
52:11What a performance.
52:12These ladies went head to head, left it all on the floor.
52:14There's a lot of difficulty at being on site in person to do this right away.
52:19And I thought they executed it at a very high level.
52:21I could not agree more.
52:22I mean, I said it last week.
52:23It takes so many guts to show up, learn the workout, throw down,
52:27have this kind of pressure and environment and still, you know,
52:30throw up a top time.
52:31It's pretty incredible what these athletes are capable of.
52:34That's right.
52:35And we can't ever forget, folks at home, if you're watching this,
52:39don't try what they just did.
52:41The vast majority of you can't handle it.
52:43But let's take a look at this replay, Boz.
52:45What an execution by Emily.
52:47Yep.
52:48Unbroken through the regular pull-ups and the chest to bars.
52:50Super smooth on these double unders.
52:52First to the barbell, right into attack mode.
52:54Looking smooth and steady there.
52:56Thrusters don't seem like they're causing her any trouble at all.
53:00You talked about that stoic approach that Emily Rolfe had,
53:03and it paid off for her.
53:04She was able to toe the line all the way through the end.
53:06We thought it was a little reckless, maybe not breaking things up
53:09early enough, but she knew what it would take to get her an advantage.
53:12And she seized the moment as Sydney took moments to pause.
53:15Yeah, Sydney's just breaking things up a little bit more,
53:18but double-timing it once she got back to that strength of hers
53:21on the barbell.
53:22And here's Emily with those last couple of reps.
53:24Starting to look just like there's actually some work being done there,
53:27which is incredible.
53:28Pulls it off.
53:31What a great race there for us to kick this thing off.
53:36And those are our unofficial results here.
53:3925.2 Emily Rolfe with a first place at 518,
53:42and Sydney Wells with a 524.
53:46What an effort by these women.
53:52And this is the best part, Boz, here in person.
53:54The environment here and in Cyndia has been absolutely electric
53:58from start to finish, even before we started recording.
54:00These guys are through the roof, man.
54:02I was down there on the competition floor.
54:04I could barely hear when it was my turn to give the count in.
54:07These guys are nuts.
54:08It's awesome.
54:16All right, well, we've got our athletes who finished working hard
54:19and now they're ready to talk about some fitness.
54:21Let's go down to Bella on the floor.
54:23Emily, an amazing performance in a repeat workout for you.
54:26We didn't quite beat our time from last time,
54:28but tell me about the energy going into this one.
54:31It was fun.
54:32The energy was wild.
54:41Because it's so, like, hype in here,
54:43I think we both ran out really hard and tried to hang on
54:46and we fell apart a little, I'd say.
54:48I did, for sure.
54:50But, yeah, it was fun.
54:52I've never had that much fun.
54:54This is, like, games-level crowd.
54:56Better, better.
55:00You've been competing in the sport for ten years.
55:02How does it feel?
55:04Is it an honour to be doing an open announcement here at Insendia?
55:07Yeah, I was super excited when I got asked
55:10and it's kind of an opportunity
55:12that every athlete kind of wants to do, I think,
55:15and check.
55:21Now, Sydney, this is your second open announcement,
55:24but I will give you credit.
55:25You were over a minute faster
55:27than you did this workout in 2022.
55:29That's impressive!
55:31Tell me about your journey as an athlete
55:33over the last couple of years.
55:34You've gone to the Games,
55:35now you're here doing another open announcement.
55:37What does all this mean to you?
55:39Yeah, it's super awesome.
55:40I mean, our crew in fitness, Dwight Upshaw,
55:42and he's taught me a lot about being just, like, smarter.
55:45I think the first time I did this workout,
55:47it took me, like, two minutes
55:49to do the 85-pound thruster,
55:51so just learning pacing and learning myself
55:54has been a big change.
55:56What are some of the other things
55:58we can expect to see from you this season
56:00as a new and invigorated athlete?
56:02Yeah, I mean, of course,
56:04the goal is to make it back to the Games.
56:06I had a great experience in 2023
56:09and I want to do it again.
56:11You want to see her do it again?
56:15Ladies, thank you so much. Congratulations.
56:18That is all we have for you here at CrossFit Incendia.
56:22And now that you've seen it done,
56:24it is your turn.

56:28by Monday to Games.CrossFit.com.

57:20I'm hard on myself,
57:22probably more so than anyone else.
57:26It's all upstairs.
57:28If I believe I can do it, I'm gonna do it.
57:32There is nobody on the floor
57:34I would rather beat than the two of them.
57:36I will sell my soul to not lose to them.
57:40I'm gonna do it.
57:42I'm gonna do it.
57:44I'm gonna do it.
57:46The two of them.
57:48I will sell my soul to not lose to them.
57:5225.3, me, Dallin, and Jason
57:54are all going head to head to head.

58:00I live in Jason Hopper's head rent-free.
58:02I would say that Dallin and James
58:04push me more than anybody else.
58:06But James, you've only ever beaten me once.
58:08We could all stand on top of the podium this year.
58:10It's very likely.
58:12I'm gonna do everything that I can to make sure I win.
58:16I'm gonna do it.
58:18I'm gonna do it.
