00:00Zindi Girls, of course it's an exciting show because this show is about students' decision making power, their solidarity and the way they have shown their determination in this show.
00:24So, what was exciting for me in this show was that I was playing the role of a professor for the first time and I have never played such a role before.
00:33Secondly, the cast of this show is very brilliant. I enjoyed working with the students because they were extremely dedicated, passionate about their work, extremely focused and the makers.
00:47Because British Tanvi Communications has been doing this work for so many years and they have made excellent content earlier as well.
00:55So, when I got to know that they were producing the show and the writers and directors, the way they have written the script, it's a beautiful script.
01:05So, there was no reason to say no for the show.
01:09But I had a doubt in the beginning whether I would be able to do justice to this character because I had never played a professor before and the way I played a professor in my mind was a little different.
01:20But when everyone's efforts came together, Rangita explained it to me.
01:27I had my first call with her about how she looks at Professor Dhar.
01:31Then going through the reading sessions, when I spoke to the directors and writers, Shonali ma'am explained what she expects out of PD.
01:41I think everything put together then just fell in place and I said yes for the show because this was something which I didn't think I would play this way, this character.
01:53But it turned out to be really, really good after everybody's combined efforts.
02:02Initially, it was slightly intimidating because there were a lot of female actors on this show.
02:09And I was also told in the beginning that all the students from girls' college will be female actors.
02:18Most of the professors, 90% of the professors are going to be females and PD will be the only strong male character in the show.
02:27Initially, I didn't realise that.
02:30I thought, okay, I am working with actors and it will happen as it happens.
02:36We will go on set, we will meet everyone, we get to know each other in a day or two.
02:40And then when the shoot starts, everything falls in place.
02:43But this set on the first day was very different for me.
02:47When I went on the set, the director is a female, Neha.
02:52The other director, a female, Vasant of course, he is also a writer on the show.
02:57But in the cast, there were very, very few people who were male in the cast.
03:02And the unit members were also, a lot of females in the unit member also.
03:06Plus the cast was completely females, all the students.
03:11So for me, it sort of became slightly intimidating because of the fact that I come from a boys' school.
03:21I have studied in a military school, which was an all-boys' school.
03:25And from there, to come to a set where there are mostly females.
03:30So, you know, initially when I came to Bombay also, it was a little difficult for me to have a conversation with females.
03:38Because in school, we never did that.
03:40We were just boys, very, very few girls, who were staff students.
03:46And I feel, I also feel proud in a way that from where, from a military school,
03:53which was an all-boys' school in a small town, I have come a long way,
03:58where I can now be on a set where there are only females, mostly, on that set.
04:05So it was intimidating, at the same time, it was a proud moment also for me,
04:09when I saw my journey, that from where to where, and now to perform with all these talented actors.
04:19It was a good experience.
04:21I think a very, very different feeling from the kind of feelings that I have had on any other set.
04:30The first thing that I try for any character, I am not saying like a 100%,
04:38but I try not to copy what has been done before.
04:45So I try and take references from real life.
04:48For this, the reference that I had, that was my English teacher.
04:53I have taken his name a lot of times, Atul sir.
04:56And he had a lot of characteristics, which PD has.
05:01My second inspiration came from my professor who was in college, Sher Fayyar.
05:11He was again somebody who was extremely approachable,
05:14with whom we could take our problems, who would listen to us.
05:18If we asked him for advice, not as a teacher, but as a human being, he would give us advice.
05:25But at the same time, he would not force his opinion upon us.
05:29So I think these two people really, really set the basis for how should I perform PD.
05:37Plus after that, that character and all the other characters were written so beautifully by Neha and Vasanth.
05:45They have written all the characters so beautifully.
05:48Going to the set, their inputs, Shonali ma'am's inputs,
05:53and working with such a brilliant cast, Vandita Das, Revati, Simran Baka,
05:58I think everything put together just shaped PD how he should have been.
06:03And I'm just grateful that people are liking PD.
06:12Choosing my projects is...
06:14First of all, I think I get an opportunity, so I don't have a choice there.
06:22After getting the opportunity, whether I want to do it or not depends on how impactful the role is,
06:31how powerful the story is, how I'm fitting in with the rest of the characters in this project,
06:40and how much scope I have to get Nandish or my experiences into that character.
06:47If all these things fit, then of course, I go ahead with the project.
06:53Also, a lot of it depends on who's directing the show, who are the makers, who is the other cast.
06:58So that gives me a fair bit idea about how serious the makers are,
07:03how serious is the director about their job.
07:06If everything fits in, then the last thing is my instinct.
07:11After everything falls in, after all the logic falls in place,
07:15I feel that now everything is sitting according to the logic,
07:19so what does my instinct say, what does my gut feeling say?
07:22And if that also says yes, then I go ahead with it.
07:28.
