00:00Remember, do you know that what they call the legal tampering period, or whatever the
00:06stupid name is, that starts on Monday, and free agency officially starts on Wednesday.
00:13So you're going to start getting a real steady flow of off-season news.
00:19Christian Kirk was just traded to the Texans an hour ago from the Jaguars.
00:23You're going to start hearing this stuff.
00:26And so when Mama Bosa, Cheryl Bosa, maybe she whipped up an omelette with some onions
00:31in it this morning, and she put on her Instagram story, can we start a petition to get Joey
00:37Bosa to the Bay?
00:40And my first reaction was, alright, a Bosa on each side of the line?
00:48Come on, man, that's cooking.
00:49I love that.
00:50And Baldy's on the station this morning with the Roast, talking about how Joey can still
00:55play, and he's not as dynamic of a pass rusher, but maybe better all around than a lot of
01:02the other pass rushers out there.
01:04He's good against the run as well, so he's getting into the X's and O's of it all.
01:07And I'm thinking to myself, OK, I don't think it's necessarily a horrible idea, but what
01:15I do think, the excitement level about it is too high, and that's mainly just because
01:21of his last name.
01:22I think the novelty of this is pushing people's opinions too far in the direction of bring
01:29Bosa to the Bay, because he is often injured, he is about to turn 30, and he is probably
01:38not going to be the cheapest option out there, and you've got a lot of things to figure out,
01:44obviously, on that cap and beyond.
01:47So I am very tenuous with my thoughts about Joey Bosa to the Bay.
01:52Well, I'm out, unless it comes down to where the number is so small that it makes sense,
01:58because it's almost like a vet-min deal in the NBA.
02:01I don't want to expend real salary and real commitment to a guy, as you mentioned, he
02:07is often injured, and he doesn't really play.
02:11He's played 28 games over the last three years, which is 28 out of 51 possible.
02:16That's about half-time.
02:18That's almost like a Joel Embiid participation rate.
02:22So yeah, if you can bring him in for a very, very, very small number, then I'm into it,
02:28and I do think it would be kind of fun to have Bosa and Bosa and Bosa and Jay Bosa and
02:34Cheryl Bosa, friend of the program.
02:36We've talked to her a couple of different times, and hopefully we can reach out to her
02:40and get her on at some point.
02:42I'm trying.
02:43I know you are, maybe later this week, and she's been so generous with her time with
02:47us, and she's been a fun interview.
02:49So from that standpoint, yeah, it'd be great.
02:51No, come on.
02:52No, for real.
02:53I mean it, Cheryl.
02:54Yeah, you've been great, but if Joey even will sign for $10 million a year, even that,
03:00for me, is too much money.
03:01Oh, then he's not coming.
03:02Right.
03:03Then what are we even doing?
03:04$10 million?
03:05You're not paying him $20, which is what he was making.
03:09I don't know that you wouldn't.
03:10I don't know.
03:11I don't think that you should.
03:13You've got so many holes that, you know, one other edge rusher, a guy who doesn't play
03:19every single game, he plays half the games, and you're going to pay $15, $20 million a
03:24year for that?
03:25I'm out.
03:26That, to me, is bad business.
03:28And again, you and I have a difference of opinion about where the 49ers sit financially
03:35right now.
03:36Yeah, we are.
03:37You bring up the word cap.
03:38All the time.
03:39I bring up the word cash.
03:40I think the 49ers are fine on the cap.
03:41They've got plenty of cap space.
03:43I think the 49ers are running their business the way I wish all businesses ran.
03:48Unfortunately, ours doesn't always work this way.
03:52Ours works sometimes where people will pull out a spreadsheet and just start crossing
03:55names off without even knowing who they are.
03:58But the 49ers are working the way that golf works, which is, if you're doing well, we'll
04:06keep paying you.
04:08If you're not, get out of here.
04:10Get out of here.
04:11I honestly believe that this is not about the cap.
04:16I think this is more about frustration with 6-11.
04:20And so when the 49ers say we need to correct things financially, I don't think that they're
04:25saying, we're in cap hell, and Brock Purdy's coming, and we're terrified.
04:29I think I hear too much of that out in the streets.
04:32What I really think is going on with the 49ers is they're like, look, we went 6-11, and we've
04:38been one of the most generous, free-spending teams in the NFL.
04:42We try to take care of our guys.
04:44We've made it a thing, where if we draft you and develop you and you're good, we make it
04:48a thing that we are going to keep you and pay you.
04:52But then, if you're going to turn around and either, A, not produce, B, get injured too
04:59often, or C, take us on a crap journey, Brandon, we're done.
05:07Oh, he's still here.
05:08I know he is, but if somebody can make it worth their while, he'll be gone.
05:14Make no mistake, the Niners are still livid about the way things went with Brandon, and
05:19it is largely their fault.
05:21If they were livid, they shouldn't have done it in the first place.
05:25And the fact that his name is even being brought up in trade conversations tells you that the
05:29Niners, they know they messed up.
05:32They messed up, but they messed up in the name of being like, oh, man, we're so close
05:36to the Super Bowl.
05:37We got to go for it.
05:40But they messed up, and they should not have signed that deal.
05:43And so, to me, this is almost just the mood they're in.
05:46The mood they're in is, if your name next to your money makes sense, then you're good,
05:55and we're fine here.
05:56If it doesn't, then we're looking to get off of you.
05:59And I do think that part of that is because of the cap.
06:03And you and I can have this debate, and we'll never have a real answer, because the team's
06:07not going to come out and say, yeah, we're making these moves because we're in cap trouble.
06:11They're not in cap hell, but they're not in cap heaven.
06:15And you look at what they have under the cap right now, and it's about $34 million.
06:19And I'm just looking at their dead cap number this year, Deebo 31, Eric Armstead, remember
06:25him?
06:26He still has a dead cap charge of $15.5 million.
06:29Mooney Ward is $12.3 million.
06:31That right there is about $58 million of dead cap money for three guys who won't play football
06:36for you.
06:37So, I know that they have a lot of cash, and Jed's been very free with his money in the
06:42past.
06:43I also look at their cap situation with a quarterback who's going to get fill-in-the-blank
06:49dollars per year.
06:50Maybe.
06:51I mean, if they do sign him, and they don't have to sign him, they can do a number of
06:55different things with the quarterback.
06:56It's not a requirement.
06:57Right?
06:58Because he's under contract for $5 million this year, because he's been so good that
07:02his $1.1 million is actually $5 million.
07:05But I look at their cap number, and their cap room is not as big as it usually is.
07:11And that's why I believe that they're having to make some of these hard choices.
07:15Yep.
07:16Look, and in or out on Bosa, not Nick, Joey, 888-957-9570, we're going to have some fun
07:22with this.
07:23We'll take some phone calls.
07:24888-957-9570, are you in or out on the idea of Joey Bosa?
07:29Again, I'm not offended by it, but it has got to fit.
07:33My response is, Joey, you better be ready to give him a discount.
07:36And if you are, and you want to play with your brother, and you want to rehab your sort
07:42of standing within the NFL community, not that it's taken some sort of huge hit, but
07:47he's missed a lot of games lately.
07:49He is not able to go command a major number.
07:54But I bet he feels like he could put up, if he's healthy, he could put up some really
07:59good numbers opposite of Nick, because Joey would not be getting all of the attention.
08:04And I bet he thinks it would be pretty fun.
08:06And I bet his family thinks it would be pretty fun.
08:09But what do we also know about the Bosa family?
08:11What do we hear every time one of them is up for a deal?
08:14Oh, don't mess with the Bosas.
08:16They drive a hard bar.
08:17Well, if you want to drive a hard bar, you can drive it somewhere else.
08:21Honestly, there's way too much of people getting all kind of enamored with the entertainment
08:29side of this, the quirkiness of it, having brothers opposite one another on the defensive
08:36line.
08:37I don't care about any of that at all.
08:41I am interested in cost-effectiveness and effectiveness.
08:47That's it.
08:48And your name can be Bosa, Snosa, Flosa.
08:52I don't care what your last name is.
08:55All I care about is the production for the cost.
08:59That's it.
09:00That's it.
09:01And so with someone missing as many games as he has, I'm very, I got a lot of trepidation
09:06about this idea.
09:07Right.
09:08And I don't believe that the cost is going to be even remotely close to what they would
09:13be willing to spend.
09:14Because as Evan mentioned, they have 11 draft picks, which means you're going to want to
09:18have 11 players that you sign.
09:21You're hoping to draft players that are good enough to make your team.
09:24And then you're going to pay those 11 players and you have to fill in other spots on your
09:29roster because you can't draft 11 players to fill 15 or 17 or whatever it is, holes
09:35on your team.
09:36If you look at the Niners roster from last year, I think they have 31 free agents.
09:41So those are 31 players who starter backup, special team, whatever you need to find replacements
09:48for them.
09:49They need to be paid.
09:50I don't think that they have enough money to just give Joey Bosa $15 million a year
09:55because he has a cool last name that you're familiar with.
09:59I don't think they can afford him.
10:01I don't think they can afford if he wants to make, well, it depends on what he wants
10:05to make.
10:06They can afford him.
10:07And again, this is the difference in the way you and I look at it.
10:12I don't think the Niners have any trouble with what they can afford.
10:15It's simply a matter of where they want to put the assets that they have.
10:20They can afford him provided that he gives them bank for their damn buck.
10:24That's it.
10:25They got the bucks.
10:26They just need the bank.
10:27Yeah.
10:28I don't think they have the buck.
10:29And we'll see what they do in free agency.
10:30And already we're seeing moves that they're making with cap casualties like Debo Samuel.
10:36They've already said how much they like Debo, but they traded him because he makes more
10:40money than what he's able to produce.
