00:00Because the number of smokers is still increasing, vaping and drinking alcohol should be declared an epidemic according to some medical groups.

00:14This is the news of Dano Tingcunco.

00:16According to some groups of doctors and health advocates, even though the number of smokers, vaping and drinking alcohol is declining, the number of smokers is increasing.

00:31That's why some groups like the Philippine Medical Association and Philippine Pediatric Society are urging the declaration of an epidemic.

00:39The government to implement more laws, possibly raise taxes on these harmful products.

00:46We also call on the candidates of the coming midterm elections to include health taxes as a cornerstone of their agenda and to improve delivery of health, health delivery laws.

01:01There is a sad and increasing prevalence of young smokers and sad to realize that these are mainly among the poor sector of our society.

01:13What does this mean to us?

01:16The risk for non-communicable diseases is there at an early age and sad to say they are the sector in our society who have lesser health access.

01:28The data from the Action for Economic Reforms, which is based on the National Nutrition Survey of 2023, shows that the number of vaping users has increased by more than 1,000 percent.

01:41It was at more than 423,000 in 2023 from more than 30,000 in 2021.

01:48The number of smokers has also increased from half a million in 2021 to more than 1.6 million in 2023.

01:58There is also an increase in the number of drinkers.

02:01The group calls on the government to tighten the provisions and implement the laws that have been passed, such as the Vape Law and Syntax Law.
