00:00Get out. We've got Baylor and St. John's. We knew this one was going to be a doozy.
00:19I mean, 13 and 22, meeting in paradise.
00:22You know what you're doing in the white? Who you're guarding?
00:30Wait, you didn't guard anybody. The game is on the f***ing line. You don't know who you're guarding.
00:35Get back in a hurry and f***ing rebound the ball.
00:39Johnny's fans, Baylor's fans to their feet for the final 7.2.
00:44On a bounce pass to Jeremy Roach. Time winding down with 4 seconds, with 3, with 2. None. Touch pass. It's come for the win.
00:57He's one of the best basketball coaches in our lifetimes.
01:02How many guys are you going to lose? You just stood there and got inside cut.
01:05He's one of the only living legends in the basketball profession who's still capable of coaching at the highest level.
01:12You don't f***ing get down when things go wrong. You dig it and you cover.
01:17And now he's coaching at St. John's.
01:21The last time St. John's won a game in the NCAA tournament was 2000.
01:27His entire career has been largely about rebounds.
01:32Year after year, school after school, program after program.
01:36But here at St. John's, hopefully we're able to move our program to that national prominence again.
01:42I think that's what Rick does and that's the type of teams he builds.
01:45You've got to get a layup on the break and move the ball.
01:47It's not going to be easy. The game changed dramatically.
01:50College basketball is a billion dollar industry.
01:54Now it's the pay to play. Paying student athletes for their talent, their skill that they have.
01:59If you don't change with the times, you're going to get left behind.
02:03You should want to win the national championship.
02:05Patino is driven.
02:07He's not slowing down, but that doesn't surprise me because he's been like that my whole life.
02:12And Rick Patino is somebody who you can hire that can single-handedly change the course of your program instantly.
02:19He wants to win a national championship.
02:22St. John's has the infrastructure in place. It's his best chance to do it.
02:27What do you say we win this? What do you say we win this game?
02:31Be tough. We're going to win this game.
02:37Providence does it. The big upset.
02:40The Louisville Cardinals are champions.
02:42Rick Patino, his biggest win without a question of a doubt.
02:45The king of college basketball.
03:01Red, come on out. White on the baseline.
03:04Go down and run high five. Come back and run high five.
03:09Game speed. Here we go.
03:19This is my 50th year of coaching.
03:22And the array of different places.
03:26You're in Greece coaching Panathinaikos.
03:29You're with the Knicks coaching your favorite team.
03:32You're with the Boston Celtics, a legendary franchise.
03:35You're with Kentucky, Louisville, Boston U. It's all the same.
03:39Understand the elements of zone offense.
03:41The game may be the same, but the challenges are always different.
03:45If St. John's is Coach Patino's last stop, he has chosen the path that led back home to Queens.
03:53What I'm trying to do is get these young men to reach their potential individually and collectively.
03:59The excitement, the passion behind it, nothing has changed.
04:03But I would say that I am very grateful that St. John's hired me.
04:13Louisville firing me, I believe I was there 17 years.
04:17The way they did it, it was so distasteful.
04:20When things are said that aren't true, they made me look guilty right away.
04:26Despite never charging Coach Patino with any wrongdoing, one of the winningest coaches in history
04:32was effectively prevented from continuing his career in major college basketball
04:36until the result of an ongoing investigation would be made public.
04:40And there was no timetable for when that would occur.
04:45What did I do? I picked myself up off the floor again.
04:50I went to Greece, turned around Panathinaikos.
04:54That's the only way to lift your spirits up once again.
04:58Between the lines, doing what I do best.
05:01But I missed college coaching.
05:06And as it turned out, I was declared innocent.
05:09But they knew I was innocent because they interviewed me, the players and everybody around it.
05:13But they drag it out, they drag it out.
05:16Now that I've been exonerated, I can get hired again in college.
05:20A small Catholic university in a New York City suburb is first to bring Patino back into the fold.
05:27Coach Patino was completely exonerated.
05:30He should not have had to have gone through what he has gone through the last five years.
05:35He got a raw deal. He should be coaching at the highest level in college.
05:41And anything short of that is really unacceptable.
05:44And now to some breaking news in sports.
05:46Legendary college basketball coach Rick Patino will now take over at St. John's.
05:51It means a lot for both sides, but especially St. John's.
05:53You know, this is a program that really hasn't done much winning in the last two and a half decades.
05:57It's hard for people now to wrap their head around it because it's been so far removed.
06:01But St. John's in the 80s was as big of a deal to New Yorkers as any pro team was.
06:06There goes Mullin off the glass.
06:08Not only because they had Chris Mullin.
06:10Where does this magic ride in?
06:11I don't even want to think about it.
06:13And then Louie.
06:14They made the NCAA tournament in those years every year when Luke Connisec was here.
06:22They were a big deal.
06:24And the negative is that was 40 years ago already.
06:28Slowly, it was like an erosion or a death by a thousand paper cuts.
06:33Matching Louie's presence was never going to be doable, but they just, the wrong coach was hired.
06:39Time and time and time again.
06:41If they hadn't hired Rick Patino, it would have been the single greatest miss perhaps in college basketball history.
06:47I can't live without basketball.
06:49From the moment I wake up in the morning, I can't live without basketball.
06:54I can't live without basketball.
06:56From the moment I wake up, I think about it.
06:58I thought about it playing on the playgrounds in Cambria Heights.
07:02I just love the game so much.
07:04He is back at the power conference level.
07:07An incredible opportunity for him to really cap his Hall of Fame career.
07:14I don't try to prove anything anymore.
07:16I really don't.
07:17I've got to get St. John's to the promised land because St. John's deserves it.
07:21Not because I have a chip on my shoulder.
07:30Okay guys, we want to get on 35 deflections.
07:32It's 10 plus steals as well.
07:34Has to be a low turnover game.
07:35Now, about 10 days ago, I'm sitting in a small coffee shop in Manhattan.
07:41Guy says to me, Coach Patino, how are you doing?
07:44I said, what do you do for a living?
07:45He said, I'm an aspiring actor, but I'm bartending right now.
07:49Got to get a break.
07:50You can't get on Broadway to be evaluated.
07:52Here at St. John's, you can get on Broadway if you win.
07:56That's the only thing you're consumed with, winning.
07:59Then everything else takes care of itself.
08:01Then you go to Broadway.
08:03You're a great group of offensive basketball players.
08:06Let the defense get you up to your offense tonight.
08:08Let's get it. Come on.
08:14Win on three, y'all.
08:15One, two, three.
08:16Win.
08:19Win.
08:25Guys like my dressing room?
08:27I pound weights before I go out.
08:37It's opening game.
08:40Shooters, without question.
08:44If you don't have butterflies, it's time to get out of the business.
08:49Being prepared is crucial.
08:53St. John's, a tournament snub last year.
08:56This season, the second year under Rick Pitino III,
08:59they want to leave no doubt.
09:05Zubi Ejikor, one of the few returnees for St. John's on the opening tip.
09:10Kind of a rebuilt St. John's roster that lost all five starters last season.
09:16Richmond attacks the goal for the first time this evening.
09:19Kedari Richmond, the prized acquisition in the transfer portal.
09:23Pitino's ability to quickly rebuild the St. John's program
09:26is aided by new NCAA rules,
09:28including allowing college players to easily transfer from one school to another.
09:34The NCAA transfer portal is officially open,
09:38meaning some of the nation's top players could look to switch schools.
09:42The difference now is I can do it penalty free.
09:44It used to be that I had to sit out a year.
09:46That's the price I paid for transferring.
09:48As you can imagine, when you remove the penalty,
09:51guys just come and go as they choose.
09:53Because of the transfer portal,
09:55recruiting is becoming more of the transfer piece
09:58than it is even focusing on high school students,
10:00depending on the level of your program.
10:03They built this team with a more conscious effort of versatility.
10:08In year one, we had to make the best of it.
10:10This time around, we could be a little more calculated
10:12in what we were trying to accomplish.
10:14Rick Pitino has a very, very nice transfer class.
10:19Vince Iwuchukwu.
10:21Oh! Iwuchukwu!
10:23Welcome to New York.
10:25Former big-time recruit from USC.
10:29And it's popped away.
10:31Aaron Scott from North Texas.
10:33Aaron Scott!
10:34If this is your third ad in your transfer class,
10:36your transfer class rocks.
10:38Davon Smith from Utah.
10:40Davon Smith is a blur. He's all about speed.
10:45I think this is a great ad.
10:49Then we have Qadari Richmond.
10:51At Seton Hall last year, felt like more often than not,
10:54he was just the best player on the floor every single night.
10:57This is the best player that transferred
10:59to a new school this season.
11:01He's a superstar.
11:03He affects the game in multiple ways.
11:06Defensively.
11:09We know he can score the ball.
11:12Rebounding.
11:15He's an elite-level passer.
11:19Makes everyone around him better.
11:21Wiltshire!
11:23But he's not really a shooter.
11:31They've reworked his shot,
11:33and you can tell he's kind of overthinking.
11:35But he does everything else.
11:37And now he can be surrounded with probably
11:39the most talent he's ever had in his career.
11:41Long pass. Touch pass.
11:43And the finish!
11:47Coach, you add someone like Qadari Richmond to the fold.
11:50What'd you think about his game tonight?
11:52Once the jump shot matches the rest of his game,
11:54he's maybe the premier guard in the nation.
11:58Like his coach, Qadari's transferring to St. John's
12:01is a homecoming for this New York native.
12:04Basketball changed my life for the better.
12:06So it took me places I never thought I would go
12:08growing up in Brooklyn.
12:11The main goal is winning on a big stage
12:13and portraying my talents
12:15and then playing in the NBA.
12:17I want to be able to put myself in a position
12:19to help my family for generations to come.
12:23It'll always be great if you be a good person
12:26and do things the right way
12:28and always believe in yourself.
12:33I think a big factor in him coming here
12:35was wanting someone who could help him
12:37with his three-point shot.
12:38I mean, that's what he's missing to be an NBA player.
12:42He has a hitch. He brings the ball back too far.
12:44He stops at the top, so we've got to get it here.
12:47And we've got to get the elbow up and out.
12:50Personally, I knew that there was something
12:52that needed to be fixed,
12:54and he spoke about Donovan Mitchell,
12:55how he changed his arc and stuff like that,
12:57how he made him a better shooter.
12:59That was also part of the decision to come here.
13:03It's not going to happen overnight or in a few months.
13:06It's got to be worked out daily.
13:08If you don't spend hours upon hours
13:10by yourself at nighttime,
13:12you're not changing anything.
13:13Qadari's a very talented basketball player.
13:16The lead down to single digits.
13:18It's a matter of how strong do you want to make the changes.
13:21Smith finds Richmond.
13:23Jump shot for the lead!
13:26What is this year two under Rick Pitino,
13:31what's it going to be like?
13:33Because everywhere he's been,
13:35it's been that jumping off point.
13:37It's been that catapult into success.
13:40His whole career, his season two teams
13:42have taken huge leaps.
13:46Providence, Kentucky, Louisville, Iona.
13:52You look at last year's team,
13:53by March, they were really good.
13:59St. John's fans, we always have expectations,
14:02but I think there's going to be real expectations
14:04from the national media.
14:06I think there's an expectation that this team
14:08makes the tournament and could do some damage,
14:11and it enlivens the fan base.
14:15Rick Pitino is a godsend for this program and university.
14:18His experience, his results speak for themselves.
14:23I think what separates Rick is one of the all-time greats
14:25is his ability to win at a lot of places
14:27that people didn't think you could before he got there.
14:31To win at a place like Kentucky,
14:33that had lost its way entirely.
14:39In 1989, the Kentucky men's basketball program
14:42was coming off of a massive recruiting
14:44and ineligibility crisis.
14:46The program was put on three years probation
14:48and banned from postseason play for two years
14:51and live television for one year.
14:55Kentucky, this is not a rich state.
14:58It's a state where you go to places like Manchester
15:01and you walk down the street and there was nothing but dust
15:04and a clothing store and a bank.
15:06But they knew one thing that they could brag about.
15:10It was their team.
15:11When I was the coach of the New York Knicks,
15:13CM Newton came to my house and he said,
15:17this is a monumental job that you would have to take.
15:22No TV.
15:23The players all leaving.
15:25Embarrassment.
15:27On and on and on.
15:29He totally killed the program with sheer honesty.
15:34I said, CM, I can't let you know now
15:36because you're not going to win.
15:38I said, CM, I can't let you know now
15:40because I've got the playoffs coming up.
15:43We swept the 76ers and Charles Barkley at that time.
15:47Unfortunately, ran into an unknown superstar
15:49named Michael Jordan in the second round.
15:52If it wasn't for MJ,
15:53I'd still be coaching the New York Knicks.
15:55Former New York Knicks head coach Rick Pitino
15:57hopes to put the University of Kentucky back on top
15:59after signing a seven-year contract
16:00to run that school's basketball program.
16:03Rick Pitino, feeling out of sync with the Knicks GM,
16:06resigns from an NBA team that has just won 52 games
16:10to take the head coaching job
16:11at the embattled University of Kentucky.
16:14It's going to be a long commitment.
16:16It's going to take quite some time.
16:17It's unlike any other job I've ever had.
16:20When I first started out,
16:21everybody's self-esteem from the fans to the players,
16:24they were all demoralized.
16:26We had to now build up an entire state
16:29that rooted for Kentucky
16:31to get them back believing it's going to come back.
16:34When we had our first practice,
16:36I wouldn't know if we'd win five games.
16:39He goes in, and the first thing he tells the players
16:42is that I'm going to tear you down,
16:44but I'm going to build you up into something
16:46that you never dreamed you could be.
16:48It's not going to be fun.
16:50It's not going to be easy.
16:52But it's going to be unbelievably effective.
16:54And the joy you will get out of it
16:55will be the best joy you've ever had in your life.
17:02Now, it's one thing to say it.
17:03It's another thing to drill it.
17:05Quite another to demand it,
17:06but to sell it like he did,
17:08and the belief he was able to create
17:11resonated as what a leader is.
17:14He brought a swag there.
17:16He brought a style there.
17:18And then you add to that their style of play.
17:21Immediately, Kentucky goes to that press.
17:24Coach evolved a lot with his philosophy
17:27as far as full-court press.
17:29We will continue on
17:31and simulate a full-court pressing drill.
17:33If you're a running pressing team,
17:36you're going to shoot 6 to 8 more free throws per game.
17:40The first year, we beat Shaquille O'Neal,
17:42Stanley Roberts, and Chris Jackson
17:44in a major upset,
17:46even though I believe we finished .500.
17:50The second year, we won the league.
17:52We were just starting to come back,
17:54but it was beginning.
17:57But at Kentucky,
17:59resources are unlimited.
18:01Everything in the state is based around Kentucky basketball,
18:04so your support is off the charts.
18:08But I don't want to compare St. John's to Kentucky.
18:10That's the Roman empire of college basketball.
18:16It was my vacation.
18:17If you said to me,
18:18would I rather coach or go on vacation?
18:20I would rather coach,
18:21because that was my vacation.
18:23This here is a job for the first time in my life.
18:27Rome wasn't built in a day,
18:29so these new surroundings
18:31are a bit of an adjustment for this Hall of Famer.
18:34Everything about this place is antiquated.
18:36We have small offices.
18:38We had no weight room.
18:39We had no meeting rooms.
18:41So everything's got to be done,
18:43and you don't even have time to think.
18:46He's seen it at the highest of levels,
18:48so he wants that out of St. John's.
18:51I love that, because he's pushing that bar.
18:54When he gets to a school that lacks
18:56whatever it might be,
18:57facilities, good players,
18:59commitment financially,
19:00donor interest, fan interest,
19:03he is very blunt,
19:04and it throws some people off.
19:06This has been the most unenjoyable experience I've had
19:09since I've been coaching.
19:10We are so non-athletic.
19:12We just lack toughness.
19:15Long time, my friend.
19:17Besides fundraising, marketing, ticketing,
19:19we're building a $68 million practice facility
19:22I haven't been able to hug this place yet,
19:26because I've been so busy.
19:29Yeah, she's a big fan of yours.
19:31I will.
19:32A lot of coaches don't want to do that stuff,
19:34let's be honest.
19:35It's a lot of work to be out and glad-handing
19:37and being that showman.
19:40But it's all part of the act,
19:42because guess what?
19:43By act two, he gets the dorm,
19:45he gets the funding,
19:46he gets the players.
19:47So he poor mouths,
19:49and people act on it.
19:51Act on it, I guess is the best way to phrase it.
19:55Right now, I don't have any special feeling for St. John's.
19:59That has to be developed,
20:01and I haven't had time to develop it yet.
20:04That time will have to wait,
20:06because the Red Storm has seven games approaching
20:09over the next three weeks.
20:11Everything we do has got to be one.
20:13There's no individuals.
20:14All it is is team.
20:16Everything is about winning.
20:17Everything is about each other.
20:19Pick each other up.
20:20Get the loose basketballs.
20:21Go out there and kick some ass.
20:27White, go behind that basket.
20:29Red, go behind that basket.
20:30You've got to get 45 layups in a minute.
20:33Everybody go as fast as you can go,
20:36and dribble the ball.
20:38We do more player development here
20:40than most places.
20:41Go!
20:43Come on, you've got to pick it up.
20:45What I'm trying to do is get these young men
20:47to reach their potential each and every day.
20:49Make it, make it.
20:50Make them!
20:51Make them!
20:52Make them!
20:53Coach Pitino is energetic.
20:55His energy is really infectious.
20:57How many guys are you going to lose?
20:58You just stood there and got inside.
20:59Got it.
21:00The passion he still has for the sport
21:02at his age is just unbelievable.
21:07Zuby, the next pass has got to go inside.
21:10Zuby is someone that, because of his passion,
21:13because of his work ethic,
21:15he achieves every single day
21:17and gets better every single day.
21:19I just come in with the mentality
21:21that I'm going to outwork everybody
21:23that's in front of me.
21:24Go!
21:25This is my second year now,
21:27and my game has improved so far.
21:29That's what you've got to do right there.
21:32For you guys that weren't here last year,
21:34Zuby was a below average basketball player last year.
21:39And now he's one of the best players
21:41in the Big East.
21:43Just in one year.
21:44So that's got to excite you.
21:45Excite you.
21:47Because of where you are.
21:49At the end of the day,
21:50it's how much better can they get?
21:52What does that player look like in 15 months,
21:54doing individual instruction every day
21:56with Coach Patino?
21:57What is their upside?
21:58And are they willing to put in the work?
22:00The guys with the most potential,
22:02which is unusual,
22:04are guys like Qadari and Devon.
22:06Because they have tremendous upside.
22:10Tremendous upside.
22:11Because right now you're not on any draft boards.
22:14So if you have tremendous upside
22:15and tremendous room for improvement,
22:17that's a great thing.
22:20Qadari doesn't understand.
22:22It's not the 40 minutes I spend with you in the morning
22:25that's going to change your shot.
22:27And so far he's having a difficult time changing it
22:30because he's not spending enough time
22:32trying to make the changes.
22:35But Qadari came here, look.
22:38He wanted to play for me,
22:39but we paid him a lot of money.
22:41We gave him a very large contract.
22:43If Seton Hall gave him the same contract,
22:46he would stay at Seton Hall.
22:47St. John's has NIL.
22:49Obviously NIL is always a big factor these days.
22:53NIL, name image likeness,
22:56allows college athletes to profit off of their fame
22:59in a variety of ways.
23:01From endorsement deals,
23:03to social media,
23:04to direct payments from the schools themselves.
23:08How we recruit student athletes
23:10is a whole new crazy world.
23:12And the scholarship is just an automatic at this point.
23:15What above and beyond can you do?
23:19I prefer the recruiting today.
23:21It's much more efficient.
23:23You don't waste two years recruiting a young man
23:26who then at the end you lose.
23:28A player has the ability to now earn real money.
23:32Schools, making a lot of money.
23:35NCAA, making a lot of money.
23:37To get a piece of that is long overdue.
23:42This is professional basketball without question.
23:46We are the 11th pro team in New York.
23:50And it doesn't bother me at all
23:52because for years I've made millions of dollars
23:54coaching young people
23:56and they've made nothing.
23:57I'm happy to share the wealth, so to speak.
24:00If it wasn't for my players,
24:01I'd be a no one in this business.
24:05Players put coaches in the Hall of Fame.
24:08When you're an older coach,
24:09you realize in a very humble way
24:11why you win.
24:12And it's because of the athletes you're coaching.
24:17I'll give you an example of what I'm talking about.
24:19Havis Ford into Mashburn.
24:20Mashburn will take it to the hole again.
24:22And Mashburn now with a total of 32.
24:25At Kentucky, Jamal was the difference maker.
24:28There goes the monster bash!
24:30He's magnificent!
24:32He had the skills that were amazing.
24:34In over 50 years of coaching,
24:36Rick Pitino has had several exceptional players
24:38that helped him run up the kind of wins
24:40that put a coach in the Hall of Fame.
24:42Tops on that list might be Pitino's
24:44fellow New York City native,
24:46Jamal Monster Mash Mashburn.
24:49Everybody recognized Coach Pitino
24:51from coaching the Knicks.
24:52And I really wanted to be a pro
24:54and I needed to find the coach
24:56that could really not just highlight my strengths,
24:58but take my weakness and make them
25:00as strong as possible.
25:03We started with something I never heard of,
25:06which was called conditioning.
25:07And Coach Pitino quickly introduced me
25:09to that.
25:10Rick started out by telling him,
25:13you don't give less than 100%.
25:15My definition of 100%,
25:17not your definition of 100%.
25:19When I got there, we had players
25:21that weren't thought of highly
25:23on a national scale.
25:24So we had to beat people on being in shape.
25:26Come on, come on, come on!
25:27He had incredible conditioning sessions
25:30that would break athletes today.
25:33They would probably call it, like, inhumane.
25:36Inhumane.
25:37And the work that they put in
25:39and that they invested hardened them.
25:43I think Coach Pitino thinks of it
25:44as a competitive advantage,
25:46understanding how to get past
25:48your perceived limits of yourself.
25:50Mashburn for three!
25:53He was the greatest college player I've coached.
25:56And he was driven to be successful.
26:01A lot of the stuff happened
26:04in hours that nobody saw.
26:08The Monster Mash
26:09probably cut our building
26:11from three years to one year.
26:14But we hadn't made it to the mountaintop yet.
26:18Even the greatest players
26:20need to develop.
26:22Just like how Jamal Mashburn
26:24was a key player in turning around
26:25the Kentucky program 35 years ago,
26:28Qadari Richmond could be that player
26:30as St. John's today.
26:32Nothing changes if nothing changes.
26:35And that's the case with Qadari.
26:37Qadari's a very talented basketball player
26:40that will not reach his potential
26:42unless he changes that jump shot.
26:46Shot clock down to seven.
26:47Trying to get past that Red Storm defense.
26:50A good drive and kick out the horn.
26:52That's away, that's clean.
26:53Brian Mabry.
26:58Looking to answer.
26:59Rattles around the rim.
27:01Not to be.
27:02It's this guy, Mabry.
27:04Way downtown.
27:05Kansan.
27:08Mabry, not again from three.
27:10Yes, sir!
27:11Bangs another.
27:12Coach Patino cannot be happy
27:14with his three-point defense.
27:18All right, way down four.
27:20Devon, you gotta stop getting beat
27:22on the perimeter.
27:24You can't take everything too personal.
27:26He just expects the best
27:27out of every single person
27:29on this roster.
27:30And he's gonna push you
27:31to a point where you might break.
27:34As bad as your defense is,
27:36and it's deplorable,
27:37it's your offense that's killing you.
27:39The quick shots every time down the court.
27:41Move the basketball,
27:43and when it goes inside,
27:44don't stand.
27:45Cut to an open area.
27:48But you can't break.
27:49It's all about winning.
27:51Them bad cuts is gonna keep coming,
27:53so we gotta take care of business.
27:55Come on.
27:57Let's do it.
27:59The core group were returning.
28:01It's so important.
28:05That is tipped.
28:06Ejiofor was tracking him the whole way.
28:11Phenomenal defense right there
28:12by St. John's.
28:14That's Ejiofor.
28:15He's doing a lot of little things.
28:20Those guys were not brought back
28:21by accident.
28:22R.J. Lewis seems to be
28:24everywhere they need him.
28:26Their talent,
28:27their ability to grow.
28:29Wilcher to the hoop!
28:30Oh, lefty poster!
28:33Simeon Wilcher.
28:35They're so high on the sophomore
28:36from New Jersey.
28:39Them understanding what coach wants.
28:42Smith on the drive.
28:43Dunlap flashing.
28:44That's good fundamental basketball.
28:47Can help the other guys in the lock room.
28:49He'll take it back for three.
28:51Brady Dunlap having a day!
28:57The players win games.
29:00Our players deserve a lot of credit
29:02for the way they came out
29:03in the second half.
29:04And they deserve a lot of criticism
29:06for the way they guarded
29:07the three in the first half.
29:08But they came out
29:09and got the job done.
29:11Last year at this time
29:12we would have lost this game.
29:15I don't have any illusions
29:16of grandeur right now
29:17with this basketball team.
29:20Can they make the NCAA?
29:21Yes.
29:22Can they go far?
29:23Yes.
29:25Can they not make it?
29:26Yes.
29:27They have enough frailties
29:28to not make it.
29:29They have enough talent
29:30to make it.
29:31So we'll see what happens.
29:33After starting the season
29:34with four straight wins
29:35by an average of 22 points,
29:37the Red Storm is about
29:38to take a step in competition.
29:40It's an opportunity
29:41to test themselves
29:42against the nation's elite.
29:53Earlier today
29:54the Associated Press
29:55voted St. John's
29:56into the top 25 poll.
29:59That's right.
30:00Your St. John's Red Storm
30:01are ranked number 22
30:02in the country.
30:03And man,
30:04does that feel good.
30:12The last time
30:13St. John's was ranked
30:14inside the AP top 25
30:17before Thanksgiving,
30:19you have to look back
30:20to November of 2000.
30:23We are talking
30:2425 freaking years.
30:30Our ranking.
30:31It's undeserved.
30:32It's conjecture.
30:33It's potential.
30:35We have played three teams
30:36that we've been much better than
30:38at home.
30:40But you can't say
30:41we're number eight
30:42in the country
30:43and you can't say
30:44we're number 22
30:45in the country.
30:46How do you know
30:47until you face competition?
30:48And that's not to belittle
30:49the teams we have played.
30:50But you'll find out
30:51when we play Baylor
30:52are we a real top 25 team?
30:54Do we have the potential
30:55to be a top 10 team?
30:57Family on three.
30:58One, two, three.
30:59Family.
31:00Good job.
31:01Good job.
31:06Are you sure?
31:07Of course.
31:08Huge fans, guys.
31:09Came from New Hampshire
31:10just to see you.
31:11Yeah.
31:12That's awesome.
31:13That's love.
31:14Appreciate that.
31:15Awesome.
31:16So you guys are
31:17in the final four, right?
31:18Yes, sir.
31:19Yes, sir.
31:20Awesome.
31:21All the way down to the bottom.
31:22Never get nothing like this
31:23in Queens.
31:26You look at the Hudson,
31:27it might be bubbling
31:28and fizzing up
31:29and all that.
31:31You jump in the Hudson,
31:32you might not,
31:33you might come out
31:34just straight bones.
31:40Here, put the camera on him.
31:43Johnny's Nation, baby.
31:47This is my first time,
31:48so, you know,
31:49I'm taking it in.
31:50You know, it's very nice,
31:51very beautiful.
31:52Stingray, dude.
31:53Oh, my God.
31:54Oh, nah.
31:55That's fire.
31:56Nah, this is great.
31:57A lot of times people
31:58take foreign trips to Bond.
32:00I think having fun together
32:01a little bit
32:02is really important.
32:03We're so serious
32:04with what we do
32:05between the lines.
32:06Getting together
32:07away from the lines
32:08with your families,
32:09with your friends
32:10is just a great experience.
32:11It's not all about work.
32:14It has to be
32:15away from the lines,
32:16fun,
32:17between the lines,
32:18a lot of hard work.
32:21All right, guys.
32:22Right here, guys.
32:23Here we go.
32:26Now, guys,
32:27this is an opportunity
32:28for a team
32:29to play against
32:30other great teams
32:31that build your resume
32:32in March.
32:33We didn't make
32:34the tournament last year
32:35because we didn't
32:36take care of business
32:37in November.
32:39So we want to start it
32:40right now.
32:41We want to stay undefeated.
32:42And you have the ability
32:43to do it.
32:44That's the key.
32:47College basketball
32:48comes your way
32:49from Nassau
32:50in the Bahamas.
32:52The number 13
32:53Baylor Bears
32:54take on
32:55the number 22
32:56St. John's
32:57Red Storm.
32:59You can't make mistakes
33:00in these big games.
33:01At the end of the year
33:02and the committee
33:03gets together,
33:04that one game
33:05could cost us
33:06an NCAA berth.
33:07So you have to cover
33:08every base.
33:09Every possession
33:10can determine
33:11whether you win
33:12or lose those games.
33:13No middle.
33:14Early step-ups.
33:15Get out of the glass.
33:16I believe there's
33:17a lot of potential
33:18with this team,
33:19but potential's
33:20a dangerous word
33:21because you can't wait
33:22forever.
33:23You want to make sure
33:24that the group
33:25understands
33:26what the tasks
33:27at hand are
33:28and where we need
33:29to get better.
33:30At the end of the day,
33:31you're judged
33:32on your ability
33:33to execute
33:34and bring those
33:35things to life.
33:38Wilter skips it.
33:39Smith lets it fly.
33:40And lifts the lid
33:41off the scoring tonight.
33:43Shoot it!
33:46Gets a step
33:47and scores
33:48off the glass.
33:49What happened on that?
33:50What happened?
33:51Just don't get it!
33:55And Hedgcomb
33:56with a big collision.
33:58We didn't touch him!
34:00He didn't touch him!
34:01You can't call like that!
34:02He didn't touch him!
34:03He is a performer.
34:05Basketball is his stage.
34:07It's real.
34:08It's coming from
34:09a very genuine place
34:10that he's that fired up
34:11and that in the moment.
34:13You blew it!
34:14Admit it!
34:15Admit it!
34:16Admit it!
34:17Just admit it!
34:18I am what I am.
34:20I don't shy away
34:21from the camera.
34:22Zuby!
34:23You gotta stop that!
34:26Here comes Zuby
34:27with another
34:28high flying finish.
34:30St. John's
34:31doing whatever
34:32they want early
34:33in the Bahamas.
34:36The Johnnies are back.
34:37A 14 point lead
34:39over the Baylor Bears
34:40at the break.
34:42Can we look
34:43at our half court offenses?
34:45Keep the ball movement.
34:46Don't stand and say
34:47Qadari do it.
34:48RJ do it.
34:49Davon do it.
34:50Play with each other.
34:52Constant movement.
34:53They will make a mistake.
34:54They're not a good
34:55defensive team.
34:56Now they're in that
34:57locker room right now
34:58pissed off as hell.
34:59They're gonna come out
35:00like gangbusters right here.
35:01Rebounding is the key.
35:02Don't let up.
35:03And if you make a mistake
35:04don't bang your head,
35:05Sim.
35:06It's okay.
35:07It's not a problem.
35:08As long as you play hard
35:09and you make a mistake
35:10it's not a problem
35:11and you're playing hard.
35:12Let's go.
35:13Let's get it.
35:16Welcome back.
35:17Number 22, St. John's
35:18Dominant.
35:19If you can win
35:20an early season game
35:21like this
35:22this is gonna stay
35:23on the resume
35:24until you get to
35:25selection Sunday.
35:27Here comes
35:28Qadari Richman
35:29missing.
35:31Reginford picked it up.
35:34Smith
35:35finds Richman
35:36for three
35:37and he missed everything.
35:43None misfires
35:44from straight on.
35:45He'll try one more time.
35:46This one's pure.
35:50That's your rebound!
35:54Jalen Celestine
35:55connects.
35:56Baylor's within five.
35:59Celestine around the screen
36:00and Baylor is pulled even.
36:02Low in this f***ing game.
36:04Time winding down
36:05with four seconds
36:06with three
36:07with two
36:08none.
36:09Touch pass.
36:10It's come for the win.
36:11No good.
36:13Overtime
36:14in the Bahamas.
36:18What do you say
36:19we win this?
36:20What do you say
36:21we win this game?
36:22Be tougher.
36:23Win this game.
36:24Come on.
36:25Let's go.
36:29Richman with a step
36:30and he scores
36:31off the glass.
36:32Jaden Nunn
36:33gets it into Almir
36:34the handoff to Roche.
36:36Bobbling the basketball
36:37down to ten seconds.
36:39With eight
36:40has to hoist the contestant
36:41three
36:42and he puts it in.
36:46Eyes on me.
36:48It is not over.
36:50It is not over.
36:52You hear that?
36:53Everybody get out of bounds.
36:55Run full speed
36:56as fast as you can.
36:57RJ any problem
36:58get a time out.
37:03RJ Lewis
37:04the quarterback
37:05for St. John's
37:06in the pocket
37:08delivers
37:09over the middle
37:10and after
37:11a couple of seconds
37:12of contact
37:13the whistle finally comes
37:14with four point one.
37:15Zubi Ejiofor
37:17six of ten
37:19at the free throw line
37:20tonight.
37:21Don't make him wait
37:22another moment
37:23before
37:24letting these go.
37:25What are you doing?
37:27What's the call?
37:28What is he saying?
37:29He wants to look
37:30Scott want to say
37:31that he elbowed.
37:32It's a box.
37:33Come on.
37:34Come on.
37:35That's ******.
37:38The coach just iced up
37:39free throw shooter.
37:40Take your time.
37:42Got two right?
37:43Two?
37:44Ejiofor can all but
37:45put this game away
37:46with a pair of makes.
37:56Take your time.
37:57Ejiofor can all but
37:58put this game away
37:59with a pair of makes.
38:02First one
38:03pops out.
38:04Hey!
38:05He makes it.
38:06Time out.
38:08Grab it!
38:09Grab it!
38:31I had the chance
38:32to essentially ice the game
38:33and
38:34I came up short.
38:37It was a really emotional
38:38moment for me because
38:39I know that
38:40I'm better than that.
38:53You gotta go.
38:54You gotta get out.
38:55Get out.
38:56Well, that was about
38:57as difficult a loss
38:58as you can have.
39:00I felt at the end
39:01of the game
39:02that was highly unethical.
39:03The referee didn't do
39:04his job by
39:05looking whether
39:06the shot clock
39:07expired on that shot.
39:10That shot was not good.
39:13And
39:14we should be
39:15sitting here now
39:16at 7-1
39:17still ranked
39:18in the top 20.
39:20It's bitter.
39:21It's bitter.
39:22Maybe the worst loss
39:23I've had as a coach.
39:27I don't know.
39:28Zach, don't ask me
39:29stupid questions, please.
39:30Because how am I gonna
39:31know something like that?
39:35Once every couple of years
39:36you'll face
39:37an instance where
39:38something happens
39:39that haunts you
39:41over and over and over
39:42into a sleepless night.
39:44Like the Christian
39:45Leitner game.
39:51Oh my goodness!
39:55How did he get
39:56the shot off?
39:57Every year
39:58you turn on
39:59the NCAA tournament
40:00and they show
40:01Christian Leitner's shot
40:02which is great
40:03if you're a Duke fan.
40:04It's not so great
40:06Mashburn!
40:09Fouled!
40:10He'll shoot one!
40:11That second year
40:12we won the SEC
40:14and went to
40:15the NCAA tournament.
40:17We played the Duke game
40:18to get to the Final Four.
40:207.8 seconds remaining.
40:23Woods!
40:25Yes!
40:28I still remember it
40:29like it was yesterday.
40:31At the end of the game
40:32he decided not to
40:33guard the inbounds pass.
40:35So he decided
40:36they wanted to
40:37double Leitner.
40:39The mistake I made
40:40was grabbing
40:41Fellhausen-Pelfrey
40:42and said whatever you do
40:43don't foul Leitner.
40:44He hasn't missed a shot.
40:46Because I did say to them
40:47it's going to Leitner.
40:492.1 seconds left.
40:50There's the pass
40:51to Leitner.
40:52Puts it up.
40:54Yes!
40:59You can forget a loss
41:00and get on to the next game
41:01but a loss
41:02in such a big game
41:04that's a different
41:05scenario altogether.
41:09When Rick took the job
41:11Sports Illustrated
41:12came out with an issue
41:14that was called
41:15Kentucky Shame.
41:16And he kept it with him.
41:19And after they lost the game
41:22the kids were really
41:23crying in the locker room.
41:25It was really an emotional thing
41:26and Rick pulled out
41:27that cover
41:28and showed them
41:30and then ripped it up
41:31in front of them.
41:32Says it'll never be
41:33repeated again.
41:36Emotion is a great thing
41:38as long as it's channeled
41:39the right way.
41:42Because
41:43excuses are truly
41:44a sign of weakness
41:45and complaining
41:46never gets you
41:47to where you want to go.
41:49We lost after
41:50Christian Leitner
41:51and with his shot
41:52but for us
41:54the turning point
41:55happened.
41:59And then Camelot started.
42:01And then we had
42:02one of the best
42:03six-year runs of all time.
42:09Run it again.
42:11What I want to do is
42:12build St. John's
42:13into something special.
42:16So we've got to go through
42:17the growing spurts
42:18that we're going to have
42:19this year
42:20where we live with mistakes
42:22and overcome them.
42:24Stop. Stop.
42:25Brady, I don't know
42:26how you're not making
42:27that steal.
42:28Hey, can you give me
42:29a better trap than that?
42:30The guy threw a bullet
42:31out of the trap.
42:32We will get better and better
42:33as the season moves along.
42:35Aaron, Aaron,
42:36you've got to get open, son.
42:37You're hiding behind Sim.
42:39Get open.
42:45Run it again.
42:47Who wants it more?
42:50They just need
42:51to put in the work.
42:53Who wants it more?
42:57Coming up this season
42:58Ego stops the workout.
43:02It makes you think
43:03you've arrived
43:04and you haven't.
43:06Big game this Sunday.
43:07Rick Pitino versus
43:08Richard Pitino.
43:09Never have thought about
43:10this owning a son,
43:11but it may come to that.
43:12Be relentless.
43:13Pitino's not thinking
43:14anything
43:15except the Final Four.
43:18Is this team good enough?
43:19I don't know if it will be.
43:21Shut the f**k up.
43:22We don't got time
43:23for that bulls**t.
43:27We need a little bit
43:28better shooting.
43:29Don't be knocking my players.
43:30Grab the f**king ball.
43:32Don't you know what
43:33adversity is all about?
43:34That's the f**king
43:35game of life.
43:36Regardless of their talent,
43:38anything's possible.
43:44See your son up there?
43:45There's no feeling like it.
43:46Every single night,
43:47everybody's fighting
43:48to make the tournament.
43:49Stay out of foul trouble
43:50and play like a champion.
