Imagine stepping ashore on a young, rumbling volcano rising from the sea—Anak Krakatau, the “Child of Krakatoa.” In 2012, I set foot on this remarkable island while it was still draped in unexpected greenery. The jungle that spread across its slopes was a vibrant reminder of nature’s resilience, thriving on freshly forged land where black volcanic sands met a wild, living canopy. Standing at the crater’s edge, you could feel the heat radiating from the earth, sense the subtle tremors underfoot, and hear the faint hiss of steam escaping from vents—a living testament to the fiery forces deep below.

Fast-forward a few years, and the fate of Anak Krakatau took a dramatic turn. In late 2018, the volcano experienced a partial collapse that triggered a massive tsunami, devastating nearby coastlines. The event radically altered the island’s shape and terrain, stripping it of much of its previous height and changing the landscape forever. The green jungle that once stood defiantly on the slopes gave way to barren rock, ash, and lava, reminding us just how powerful and unpredictable nature can be.

Join me on this journey back to 2012, when Anak Krakatau still boasted its surprising tropical forest. We’ll explore the island’s lush, mysterious trails, peer into the steaming crater, and witness the rugged beauty that once was—before history took an unexpected turn. It’s a story of awe, transformation, and a stark demonstration of how quickly the face of our planet can change. Come along and experience Anak Krakatau in all its raw, volcanic glory!
