Camping and Fishing for Sturgeon in British Columbia
North America’s largest freshwater fish, the white sturgeon. A river giant, often growing 6-10 feet long, and living for more than 100 years. These prehistoric fish weigh hundreds of pounds and are native to the Fraser River in Chilliwack, BC - a vital part of the ecosystem.
With the guidance of Yves Bisson Sturgeon Fishing Co. we had the most amazing day on the water, tagging and tracking these incredible creatures as part of ongoing conservation efforts to protect the species. Over the course of the day, we caught four sturgeon, ranging from 6 to over 8 feet long, all over 50 years old. 100% catch and release supports the critical work being done to protect these ancient giants, not just for their ecological role but also for preserving a species that has been around for over 200 million years!
Did you know that sturgeon are the source of caviar? To protect wild populations, most caviar is now produced from farmed sturgeon. One reason it’s so expensive is that female sturgeon don’t produce eggs until they are 10–15 years old, and even then, they only spawn every 2–4 years.
