00:00Barry, welcome back. You've been appointed as Rangers head coach. How do you feel to be taking on this role?
00:07Proud. Excited. If I'm being honest, it came out of the blue. So it's been a whirlwind 24 hours.
00:15But just happy to get it done, get my staff together and obviously get into the training ground and get going.
00:23You say it's a whirlwind. What have these last 24 hours been like for you? It's obviously all been very quick.
00:30Severe lack of sleep. I've had two or three hours because obviously I had to, as I mentioned, get a backroom staff together.
00:37I've got to be respectful that they were in jobs elsewhere so we had to get all that sorted.
00:43But thankfully the guys worked hard at that and so did the chief exec and the chairman.
00:49Thankfully we got it done quicker than expected. That allows us to get in quicker than we thought.
00:54So we're just eager to get started and look ahead to the next game, which is Wednesday against Kilmarnock.
01:01The chance to come in here as manager, is that one that you couldn't turn down? Was that such a great opportunity for you to come in here?
01:09Yeah, if I'm being honest, I didn't think it would ever come. I've been happy with what I've been doing the last two or three years, if I'm being honest, since I came out of coaching.
01:17I've been back at the club, obviously, as you know, as an ambassador. I've been enjoying that role.
01:22When I got asked, it was a job I couldn't turn down, albeit it's only for three months, I know that.
01:28But it's my job to go and get a kick out of this group of players because when I watched them, I think there's really good players there.
01:35So it's our job as staff and my job as a manager to go and get the best that I think I can get out of them.
01:43Did you speak to anyone about taking the job before you? It's obviously been quick, but were there any conversations with those people that you had before you took this?
01:50Yeah, a couple of people who I respect in the game. They were a bit surprised as well.
01:55But I always lean on these guys because I trust them. I trust their judgement.
02:01They knew when I spoke to them, they knew how excited I was.
02:06I'm just desperate to get started and I'm looking forward to, as I said, just getting out on the training pitch and spending a bit of time with the players.
02:15As a player here, you of course played under a number of successful managers too.
02:19Is there things that you can take from them now, from your playing days into your coaching now here?
02:25Yeah, I'm my own man. But listen, as you mentioned, I played under some fantastic managers that obviously I learned so much from.
02:34So obviously I'm going to take bits, but my own guy, I've got a certain way of playing.
02:38You'll see that straight away and that's where we have to get to work on the training ground.
02:43We've only got a day's preparation before the commandment game, which is no ideal, but it is what it is.
02:48I'm not complaining. Listen, I'm in a fantastic position and we're just going to give it our all.
02:55But you will see certain differences come Wednesday night.
02:59You have watched the team, of course, this season. How do you assess it so far?
03:05Inconsistent, if I'm being honest with you.
03:07I think in terms of, for instance, Europe, I think some of the performances have been top class.
03:15Domestically, for me, that's your bread and butter. That's where you've got to win most weeks.
03:21Look, you're always going to have a bump in the road, but I think there's been too many bumps in the road.
03:25So it's our job and my job as a manager and the staff's job is to try and get a level of consistency into the squad.
03:33Because as I said, there's definitely quality players and they look a good group.
03:39They just look a bit flat at this moment in time.
03:41But again, that's our job as a staff to try and get that confidence back up.
03:47You will have your first session with the players tomorrow.
03:50What will be your message to them in these early stages?
03:53Enjoy it. You're playing with Glasgow Rangers.
03:57It's a privilege walking through into this training centre.
04:02I've not been here for a while. I see the number of changes.
04:06Enjoy yourself. They're going to enjoy training.
04:09Training will be tough, there's no doubt, but it'll be enjoyable as well.
04:13It'll be at a certain standard, which I would expect.
04:17So, yep, it's all about enjoying your football.
04:21Listen, it's serious when it comes to 90 minutes.
04:23It's all about winning it, Rangers.
04:25That's how I was brought up.
04:27And that's the way I want my players to be.
04:29You have to win every game.
04:31The demands and the expectations put on you here.
04:34When people come to watch you, they expect you to win games.
04:37And I don't think we've won enough this year.
04:39You spoke about your coaching staff a bit earlier.
04:41The guys that are coming in with you here.
04:43Can you tell us a bit more about them and what kind of roles they'll take on?
04:47Will you all have your own individual things or how's that going to shape up?
04:51Well, obviously I'm going to be the manager.
04:54I brought in Billy Dodds and Neil McCann, who have had previous experiences as managers.
04:59I played with them.
05:00I know the characters that they are.
05:03I know how good they are on the training pitch in terms of organisational skills.
05:08They put on really good sessions.
05:10And obviously Arlie McGregor, everybody knows what he's done for the club.
05:15So, I'm excited with my staff.
05:17When I asked them, I was unsure if I could get them.
05:20But they were great.
05:23The first point was, no, desperate to come and work for you.
05:26And that's what I want.
05:28So, just delighted to get it all done.
05:30And as I said, I'm excited to start working with these guys.
05:33And we're excited to get to work with the players.
05:35Sam has been in the coaching staff here for a few weeks now.
05:39How much are you looking forward to working with him too?
05:41Yeah, looking forward to it.
05:43I've met him.
05:44We spent a bit of time together.
05:46Just me and Sam talking about just players.
05:50And obviously, the way that I want to take the team forward.
05:54So, yep, he'll just need to get used to, obviously, a new coaching team coming in.
05:59But listen, he's eager.
06:01That's what I want.
06:02He's got a good work ethic about him.
06:04That's important to me.
06:06So, yep, looking forward to bringing him into the staff.
06:09Just finally, on the fans.
06:11What would your message be to the fans tonight?
06:14The message would be, you're going to see a team that's going to have a certain style of play.
06:20Attack-minded.
06:22And we're going to try and win every single game.
06:25We're going to be aggressive, which was a part of my game as well.
06:30And I don't mean that by going and tackling people or going over the top on people.
06:35I mean aggressive in the press.
06:37So, we just need to make sure we get it right.
06:41But, as I said, when I look at the squad, I do believe there is a team capable of winning games week in, week out.
06:48So, I'm just excited to get started.
06:51You can see I'm getting a bit sweaty here and ready to go.
06:55And we'll just, listen, we'll take it game by game.
06:59But every game we enter, we enter to win.
