Jonathan Allen has been thrown around in trade rumors, would you trade him for a day 3 NFL Draft pick in 2025?

00:00would you keep Jonathan Allen or trade him
00:04for a day three pick if that's what he came down to?
00:08Now remember, if you were to trade him
00:10and get a late round draft pick,
00:11you're also freeing up a ton of cap space.
00:14So normally that would be a no brainer,
00:16except in this case, Danny,
00:17there's not really much of a need for more cap space.
00:20They already have literally more than they're going to use.
00:23Like that's a saying, got more money than you can use.
00:26They have more cap space
00:27than they're gonna use this off season.
00:29I guess it's still beneficial to just have more
00:31that you could potentially roll over.
00:33But this is our poll question today
00:36on our 106.7 The Fan Twitter account.
00:39The poll of the day on Grant and Danny
00:41presented by Metropolitan Moving and Storage.
00:43Let Metropolitan Moving and Storage do your heavy lifting
00:46and take it to the house more
00:48at dcmetropolitanmoving.com.
00:50This is pretty simple.
00:52Interrupt, no, simple is the wrong word.
00:55It's a pretty basic calculation.
00:56Again, this is what Adam Peters and company
00:58are tasked with doing.
00:59The way Bobby Roseman thinks about it,
01:00the way all the smart GMs are doing it.
01:02Where are we better?
01:03What's more valuable to me?
01:05The services of John Allen at his present deal
01:08or salary cap space and call it a fifth or late fifth.
01:13I'm just making up that number.
01:14That's the value that, you know,
01:15we're doing our best to kind of quantify
01:17what that might look like.
01:18Maybe you could do better if you're willing to pay
01:19some of the salary,
01:20but just to keep things as simple as possible.
01:22Where is this football team better?
01:24I don't know that it's that concrete and easy an answer
01:28to a fairly simple question,
01:29because I don't believe this group is now going to go,
01:32Oh my God, I got 16 million bucks.
01:34Watch what I'm going to do and do a Brewster's millions bit
01:37and go fill in every single need.
01:39You're going to responsibly bring back
01:40so many of the guys that were on one year deals.
01:42A lot of them will be at pay raises.
01:44Think Dante Fowler.
01:45I think they'll go into a similar bin in terms of shopping.
01:49I don't see them going for a lot of big ticket items.
01:51Maybe I'm wrong about that.
01:53So if it's me doing it, Danny Peters,
01:58I'm more handsome and much more qualified than I am.
02:01I'm doing this because I want the cap space
02:03because I want to go make a couple of splashes.
02:05I don't know that that's their MO.
02:07So given in the real world,
02:09given that's where we are
02:10and the way that they've gone about their business
02:12and kind of, you look at San Francisco
02:13and you look at the Peters' proclivities,
02:16I might actually want to just keep John Allen,
02:18even if it is a bit of an overpay this year.
02:20Well, the argument I think to keeping John Allen
02:23is that the import of D-Tackle seems to be
02:27growing more and more and more.
02:29When you think about how teams
02:30are affecting quarterbacks now,
02:33and it seems like if you can have
02:36a presence on the interior
02:38and the ability to get to the quarterback from the inside,
02:42that it's actually more effective and beneficial
02:44than doing it from the outside.
02:46It's kind of odd to think about,
02:47but you think about like Aaron Donald winning
02:49the Defensive Player of the Year Award all those times
02:51where he was so dominant and great.
02:53Even the Eagles, the Eagles' pass rush,
02:57where they're at their best is Jalen Carter.
03:00The Chiefs, it's Chris Jones.
03:03It's not their edge rushers.
03:04They both have guys coming off the edge who can have success
03:07and Lord knows the Eagles did in the Super Bowl.
03:10But I think there's something to reassessing now.
03:14What's most valuable?
03:15Is it pass rush from the inside,
03:17pass rush from the outside?
03:19We've always kind of thought,
03:20you got to go get that defensive end
03:21who can get you a dozen, 13 sacks.
03:24And we're talking about it with Miles Garrett,
03:26who could be the best player on your defense
03:28and one of the best players in the league.
03:30But what if you're just awesome
03:32along the defensive interior?
03:34I think that that's probably the way forward
03:36for a lot of teams.
03:37I just don't know if Allen changes that algorithm
03:41at this point of his career.
03:42Like you've had him the last couple of years
03:44and what do you have to show for it?
03:45I don't mean, was your defense good enough?
03:47I just mean, I think at his peak,
03:50probably three, four seasons ago, whenever that was,
03:53he was a little better different player than he is now.
03:55And with Allen and Payne on the inside,
03:58that and a few bucks got you some coffee.
04:00Like neither of those guys changed games,
04:03ended drives, took over games the way that you want.
04:06You're hoping that Johnny Newton can become that guy
04:09who they just drafted at 36 overall
04:11early in the second round.
04:13But if he's not going to be,
04:15at least he's going to do it much cheaper than Allen.
04:18You're paying Allen basically to be a pro bowler
04:21who might, is a fringe all pro.
04:22You're not getting that kind of performance.
04:23Yeah, you're paying star money for fine.
04:25And you can't be-
04:27Or even good.
04:28Yeah, you're pretty good.
04:29But if you do that a handful of times over,
04:31you're going to be a really-
04:32Right.
04:34You know-
04:34Just an okay team, honestly.
04:35Not a very well-liked GM.
04:36Right, and that's kind of the thing.
04:38This is the hard part.
04:39Because again, all this guy's done
04:40is everything right at all times.
04:42So this is one of those cultural questions.
04:44It's one of those, you want a good dude that's not,
04:46again, as I said, has done everything right.
04:48All he's done is given everything he has to a franchise
04:51that hasn't really rewarded him with many wins
04:54and a good process until right now,
04:56his final year and they end up getting hurt.
04:58So I would love some way,
05:01and I know this isn't one of the options,
05:02to say, John Allen, we would like you back.
05:05Slightly reduced role, heavily reduced salary.
05:07Let's work something out that maybe benefits both of us.
05:11If he's still in the, I need to be,
05:14I'm John Allen, I'm the dude.
05:16I'm still an alpha.
05:17I still have my fastball.
05:18I need to go to a free agency
05:19or find someplace where I can get a contract extension
05:20to get paid.
05:21I would say, seek permission, find that.
05:24If you get it, great for you.
05:25We'll move on.
05:26And one day we'll come back and have a nice ceremony.
05:28When you play against us or when you retire,
05:30you can come out at halftime and give a speech.
05:32All fun and good.
05:33I'd love for him to be back.
05:35I don't think I could do it at that money, if it's me.
05:38But for them, I don't know.
05:40I don't see them taking that money and turning it around
05:43and spending it in a major way.
05:44Because they've already got a lot of cap space,
05:46if that's your point.
05:46All right, I want to play deal or no deal
05:48with you right here on Grant and Danny.
05:50I'm going to offer you a trade for John Allen
05:54and you can either accept that deal or pass on it.
05:59And we can go around the room.
06:00I'll make an offer to each of you.
06:02But let's start with you, Danny.
06:04Okay.
06:06I will now call Danny Ruyeh in his front office.
06:09Hello, Danny Ruyeh.
06:13Hey, Danny, it's Grant Peters
06:15over with the Washington Commanders.
06:16Grant, saw you on TV looking sharp, my man.
06:19You're handsome.
06:19Thank you very much.
06:20Yeah, buddy, you got it.
06:21I'd like to send John Allen your way.
06:23Okay.
06:25All I'm looking for is a fifth round pick.
06:32You want a fifth for John Allen?
06:34Yeah.
06:35Let me ask you this, Grant.
06:36Again, I'd mesmerize.
06:37I'm trying not to look at your eyes
06:38because I'll kind of do whatever you ask me to do
06:39if I look at you in the face.
06:41Why can't I just sign him in for agency
06:42when you cut him in a couple of weeks?
06:45I don't have any questions worth answering right now.
06:48I just need to know if you're willing
06:49to give me a five for John Allen.
06:51No.
06:52Okay.
06:53No, sorry, man.
06:55I realized after I called you two,
06:56you should be the commanders in this exercise.
06:59Oh, okay.
06:59I'm calling you and making the offer for John Allen.
07:01Oh, all right.
07:02In deal or no deal.
07:03But you just said no.
07:04Basically, I'm offering a five for John Allen.
07:06You're saying no.
07:06Yeah.
07:07If you're Adam Peters.
07:08Oh, if I'm Adam Peters, I'm doing it.
07:09Yeah.
07:10Okay.
07:11Well, that's a whole different ballgame.
07:12Right, it's a different ballgame.
07:12If I'm the team that's, I go,
07:14I'm not offering him much for you.
07:16I can go get him.
07:17All right, so Darris, you're the commanders.
07:18I'm calling you now for John Allen.
07:20Allen.
07:23Commander speaking.
07:25Hey there.
07:26It's your pal, Grant Paulson.
07:27How are you doing?
07:28Oh, I'm great.
07:29I'm great.
07:30I'm just Adam Peters.
07:30That's all.
07:31Yeah, it's a good life over there for you.
07:32Life's good.
07:33I'm very handsome.
07:34So this is the LA Rams on the phone, by the way.
07:37I hold pick 26 in every round.
07:40I thought you, I thought you don't believe in picks.
07:43I didn't used to.
07:44And that's why I'm calling you right now
07:45to offer you a draft pick.
07:47I'm offering you a sixth round pick for John Allen.
07:50Ooh, sixth round pick.
07:52Less need.
07:55Okay, let me think on that.
07:56I think I can do better than a sixth.
08:00So you're not accepting the deal?
08:01No, I'm not going to accept that.
08:03Good enough?
08:03I thank you though, Les.
08:04All right, very good.
08:05So Darris turned down 16 million in cap space
08:08and a sixth round pick to keep John Allen on his roster.
08:12See, this is what I am getting to.
08:14I think that we saw it with the calls earlier from fans.
08:17Darris is turning down an offer.
08:19I think people kind of get steamed up
08:21to keep John Allen on the roster.
08:23Oh, fans do.
08:24Who else are we talking about?
08:25100%, yeah, people are very much in.
08:26I'm not actually calling Adam Peters right now.
08:29Darris is a fan.
08:30All right, let's get Toby on the horn then.
08:32Let's see what Toby's got.
08:33Washington Commanders.
08:36Hello, Mr. Altizer.
08:38It's Grant Paulson from the Green Bay Packers.
08:40How are you?
08:40Any thoughts in regards to John Allen?
08:42It is.
08:43You can have him.
08:45I haven't given you my offer yet.
08:46That's fine, I accept it.
08:48Wow, so what do you have against John Allen?
08:51I'm saving a lot of money.
08:5216 million dollars.
08:53I'm saving a lot of money for a player
08:56that had a nice run here,
08:59been reasonably effective in recent times,
09:03but not too recent times.
09:04All right, so shtick aside,
09:06then I will offer you a seventh in 2026.
09:09Sure, let's do it.
09:11You're doing that?
09:12Yes, 100%.
09:13How about Toby Altizer?
09:14Yeah, Toby's ready to move, by the way.
09:14Are you turning up the heat a little bit
09:16for some radio shtick, or is this serious?
09:18This is a behind the scenes too.
09:19No, I believe this.
09:20So you're just in, you're just moving on.
09:22I'm moving on regardless.
09:23Because your point is I'm cutting the guy.
09:24You would cut him for the 16 million.
09:25Yep, anybody that calls and offers, great,
09:27you can have him.
09:28All right, now you might want to work the phones
09:30a little bit, but I like for the exercise,
09:31you're saying I will accept that offer.
09:33Yeah.
09:34Basically, you're going to tell the GM then,
09:36hey, we've got a deal, if I can't do better,
09:38I'll call you back in a few hours.
09:40I love it.
09:41Toby Altizer's moving John Allen for a bag of footballs.
09:44But this is a man who rules with an iron fist.
09:46He wants that cap space.
09:47A lot of blood, a lot of sweat,
09:49a lot of press conferences where he was angry after losses.
09:52All right, Ryan, you're the last one to get an offer.
09:54Adam Peters.
09:58Yeah, Mr. Peters, this is Grant Paulson
10:00with Houston, Texas.
10:02How are we doing?
10:0225th pick in every single round.
10:04How you been?
10:05I'm doing pretty well, how are you?
10:06Doing well.
10:07I want John Allen.
10:08Heard you guys have made him available,
10:10talked to the agent, we're working some things out,
10:12but here's what you need to know.
10:15I'm going to give you a seventh round pick this year
10:18and a fifth round pick in 2026 for John Allen.
10:23Okay, we do like Jonathan Allen,
10:25and if you're in a two and a half sacks,
10:27obviously, that's a lot of sacks there,
10:30so I would see why you would want him.
10:31The Joning, I don't understand.
10:33Well, no, no, but here's also the thing, though.
10:36He's a team leader.
10:37You guys need a leader in Houston.
10:39Why are you talking me into the trade?
10:41I called you and offered you a trade.
10:43Because here's what I'm going to do.
10:44Okay.
10:45I want that fifth round pick in 2026
10:48to be a fourth round pick.
10:49No, we're not doing that.
10:50You need a leader.
10:51The offer is a seventh round pick this year
10:53and a fifth round pick next year.
10:55Okay, let's talk.
10:56Martin.
10:58Martin retired, by the way.
10:59Marty.
11:00Marty retired also.
11:02This is going tough.
11:03The assistant GM.
11:05Lance.
11:06Lance Newmark.
11:07Yeah, silly white-haired Lance.
11:09You better get your corporate ladder straight.
11:11I know, you're right.
11:12We got a deal.
11:14Wow.
11:15So we picked up at the end there.
11:16We picked up two trades pulled off for John Allen.
11:20Danny Ruyeh would not take a,
11:23you would take a five for him.
11:23I would take a fifth.
11:24Would you take a six for him?
11:25No.
11:26You wouldn't?
11:27Keep him on your roster.
11:28Yeah.
11:29Because I don't hate the idea near as much as Toby.
11:31I don't either, but 16 million, you're clearing up.
11:34Plus the six.
11:35You have to add 16 million cap space when you do this.
11:39That's not nothing.
11:40No, it's significant.
11:42I just, again, if this was a,
11:45now we've got the opportunity,
11:46watch what we do with it,
11:47that we're going to go to this, you know,
11:50into the open market and start going supermarket sweep style
11:53with impact players.
11:54I don't think they're really going to utilize it.
11:56To me, there's still value in having a leader,
11:59a pregame speech guy,
12:00a solid player who's transitioning to a slightly new role
12:03as rotational defensive tackle.
12:05I'll overpay for that for a short amount of time
12:08rather than just get nothing for it.
