00:00On the third anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, United Nations Secretary General
00:04António Guterres warned that human rights worldwide are under threat by warmongers and
00:09autocrats. He also noted abuses linked to economics, technology, climate change, migration
00:14and gender.
00:15We have our work cut out for us. Human rights are the oxygen of humanity, but one by one
00:24human rights are being suffocated. By autocrats crashing opposition because they fear what
00:31the truly empowered people would do. By a patriarchy that keeps girls out of school
00:38and women at arm's length from basic rights. By wars and violence that strip populations
00:44of their right to food, water and education. By warmongers who thumb their nose at international
00:52law, international humanitarian law and the UN Charter.
00:57Guterres was speaking at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday. At the same session
01:02the council's chief warned of a very dangerous situation in a world increasingly dominated
01:07by authoritarians.
01:08By some estimates, autocrats now control around one third of the world's economy, more than
01:15double the proportion 30 years ago. Leaders cite national security and the fight against
01:23terrorism to justify gross violations. Hypocrisy, double standards and impunity have also played
01:31a part.
01:32Volker said the system of global protections built in the years following World War II
01:36have never been under so much strain and stressed the need to ensure that human rights and the
01:40rule of law prevail.
