00:00The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres denounced the non-fulfillment and
00:17violations of human rights worldwide during the Human Rights Council held in Geneva.
00:24Venezuela has activated the so-called criminal self-government halls as part of the participatory
00:29democracy promoted by the Bolivarian government.
00:35And Argentinian education sector unions are holding a national strike to demand better
00:39salaries and dignified treatment in the face of the policies of President Javier Millay.
00:47Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:52To begin with the news, stay with us.
01:08The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres denounced the non-fulfillment and
01:12violations of human rights worldwide during the Human Rights Council held in Geneva on
01:17Monday.
01:18Guterres expressed that actions against the rights of humanity are due to autocratic governments
01:23that eliminate the opposition because they fear retaliation from empowered peoples.
01:28The diplomat warned that the military that take part in the conflicts disregard international
01:34humanitarian law and the United Nations Charter.
01:37Meanwhile, the head asserted that violating human rights poses a direct threat to all
01:42the mechanisms and systems that had been so hard to establish in the last 80 years.
01:51Recent rollbacks on social media, fact-checking and content moderation are reopening the floodgates
01:57to more hate, more threats and more violence.
02:02Make no mistake.
02:09These rollbacks will lead to less free speech, not more.
02:14Meanwhile, the great promise of artificial intelligence is matched by limitless peril
02:19to undermine human autonomy, human identity, human control and yes, human rights.
02:27Cuba's Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez denounced the rise of neo-fascism at a global level
02:32and the threat of policies to support vulnerable groups in the West.
02:47We note with great concern the advance of conservative and neo-fascist platforms and
02:52how developed countries are experiencing decades of regression on fundamental rights, including
02:58women's equality, sexual and reproductive rights, the rights of Afro-descendants, ethnic
03:04minorities and migrants.
03:07Attempts by Western countries to turn this Council into a repressor against countries
03:11that do not subordinate themselves to their interests are unacceptable and jeopardize
03:16its credibility and existence.
03:19The grim history of the implosion of the old Human Rights Commission must not be repeated.
03:35The Cuban Minister also recalled the US practice of allocating millions of dollars in federal
03:40budget funds through entities such as the USAID to organizations and media outlets as
03:46Recently, copious evidence has come to light about the United States government's practice
03:50of dedicating millions of dollars of federal budget funds through entities such as USAID
03:55and NASA to finance organizations, media outlets, artificial intelligence, labor unions, and
04:00private companies.
04:01The United States government's practice of allocating millions of dollars in federal
04:05budget funds through entities such as USAID and NASA to organizations and media outlets
04:11organizations, media outlets, artificial intelligence, laboratories, and technology platforms that
04:18use as a facade the protection of human rights and the supposed promotion of democracy, while
04:25responding to illegitimate political objectives of that government.
04:30This is a serious and pertinent matter for this Council and its mandate, as it demonstrates
04:36the double standards and opportunism with which the issue of human rights has been used
04:41to subvert sovereign governments.
04:51The Venezuelan Foreign Minister Iván Gil denounced the Western hypocrisy, the silence
04:55in the face of the genocide in the Gaza Strip, and the attacks against sovereign governments
05:00at the United Nations Human Rights Council.
05:05The United Nations organization, instead of being a space for justice and peace, has become
05:10a market where human rights are auctioned off to the highest bidder.
05:15While campaigns of disinformation against Venezuela are being waged in this Council,
05:20there is absolute silence in the face of the genocide of the Palestinian people in Gaza,
05:25carried out with the complicity of the same actors who here present themselves as moral
05:29judges.
05:30It is the height of hypocrisy, and it is not just silence, it is institutionalized corruption.
05:36USAID has financed phantom projects with the sole purpose of attacking sovereign governments.
05:42How much of these funds have been used under the cover of resolutions emanating from this Council?
05:52Gil denounced the resurgence of fascism as the greatest danger facing humanity and criticized
05:57its manifestation in conflicts such as those in Ukraine and Palestine, as well as repressions
06:02in Latin America.
06:06The resurgence of fascism is the greatest danger facing humanity.
06:10In Ukraine, the conflict has been turned into a pretext for prolonging the war and maintaining
06:15the machinery of death.
06:17In Palestine, an attempt has been made to justify barbarism with a discourse of absolute
06:22cynicism.
06:23In Latin America, soft coups, judicial persecution and repression are being used to confront
06:29any attempt at real change.
06:31That is why, in Venezuela, we have decided that Caracas will be the world capital of
06:35the fight against fascism.
06:38We will not remain silent while the world returns to the darkest times in its history.
06:43We do not accept its order based on rules that aim to maintain the privileges of a few
06:47and condemn the peoples to subjugation.
06:52And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok
06:55at Telescreen English where you will find news in different formats, news updates and
06:59more.
07:00We'll be right back, stay with us.
07:23Welcome back to From the South.
07:25Venezuela has activated the so-called communal self-government halls as part of the participatory
07:30democracy promoted by the Bolivarian government.
07:33The activation was headed by Venezuelan Vice President Delsi Rodriguez in the Catia Parish
07:38of Caracas, where she highlighted the organization of the Venezuelan people to strengthen and
07:43promote the wealth for a good living in the face of extremist sectors that seek to destabilize
07:49the nation.
07:50On the other hand, the Vice President for Planning, Ricardo Menendez, participated in
07:54the creation of the halls in the community of Artigas in the Venezuelan capital.
07:59Both government officials detailed that this type of governance will warranty the implementation
08:04of the seven transformations carried out by the national executives throughout the territory.
08:12We have activated the communal halls in the communal circuits and are now activating the
08:16six work teams.
08:17This is how we must govern in the territory, listening to the problems, not being afraid
08:22of the problems.
08:23The problems are there to be talked about and to be resolved, and those that cannot
08:26be resolved, we must look for a way to resolve them.
08:30On the other hand, the Venezuelan Vice President for Planning, Ricardo Menendez, called the
08:35activation of the communal self-government halls as a leap to full democracy.
08:40Today, February 24th of 2025, the communal governments are born in the territory.
08:46This is not an invention that comes out of the blue.
08:49Here you have, for example, the food house.
08:51Here you have what corresponds to the health modules, the comrades that accompany us.
08:55Here in the space you have the justices of the peace.
08:57There, the comrades of the communications tables, the comrades of the water tables,
09:02the comrades of the gas tables.
09:03It has been a long developing journey to have what we have.
09:07Today, it's a leap towards new forms of government, a leap to full democracy.
09:15Argentinean education sector unions are holding a national strike to demand better salaries
09:19and dignified treatment in the face of the policies of President Javier Millet.
09:24The Confederation of Education Workers of the Argentine Republic, CETIRA, held a demonstration
09:29around the Ministry of Education as of 10 a.m. local time.
09:34For its part, the Ministry of Human Capital tried to stop the mobilization by setting
09:38up a table of warranted minimum wage for teachers convened for this Monday.
09:44Among the demands of the education sector to the Millet's administration are better
09:49salaries, an increase in educational investment, and the restitution of the National Teaching
09:54Incentive Fund.
10:01In Colombia, the trial against former President and former Senator Álvaro Uribe continues
10:06on charges of bribery in criminal proceedings, procedural fraud and bribery.
10:11After the High Court of Bogota declared the protection action filed by the defense inaudible,
10:17the oral trial against Uribe, accused of involvement in alleged witness manipulation, moves forward.
10:23The hearing of the oral trial will resume with the testimony of Senator Iván Cepeda,
10:28recognized as the main victim of the case.
10:31For his part, Senator Cepeda reported that the victim's bench will turn to the Inter-American
10:36Commission on Human Rights, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Independence of
10:41Judges and Lawyers, and internationally recognized non-governmental organizations to appoint
10:46observers.
10:54I was shown text messages and audio messages addressed to my WhatsApp account titled Ivan2.
11:12Who sent you these messages?
11:15Mr. Juan Guillermo Monsalve.
11:18Do you remember what Mr. Monsalve was informing you about?
11:26He was informing me about a situation that he considered anomalous.
11:30A lawyer was looking for him, and that lawyer was asking him to take back his statements
11:39made in the past about Mr. and Mrs. Uribe and about the matters that we have learned
11:49about in the narrative that I have developed from the interview of 2012.
11:57Also in that text he said that an offer had been made to him, but that he had refused
12:02to accept it.
12:32As something to be expected from this government and the whole international situation, we
12:54also know that from other countries in the region, including the United States, with
12:58the inauguration of Trump, let's say that this is the proposal to reduce women's rights
13:03because in reality what they want is to silence us.
13:06In reality they want us to remove us from the spaces because they want to sustain their
13:10social economic policies in order to always benefit only themselves.
13:16This March 8th us women are going out to march very worried because of the threats that exist
13:20to eliminate the Ministry of Women, the Ministry of Children and Adolescents and also the Law
13:2557, 77 to 16, against all types of violence against women.
13:31These ministries were conquests of years of much struggle and we are not willing to back
13:35down. We defend what is ours.
13:55Welcome back to From the South.
14:02Mexican President Claudia Chamba urged Monday her U.S. counterpart Donald Trump to prioritize
14:09relations and reach an agreement in the North American region. During her regular morning
14:17press conference, Chamba expressed her hope to reach an agreement with the United States
14:39during the talks to be held between both nations on economic issues. The head of state pointed
14:44out that the protection of the Mexican people and efforts to avoid the imposition of tariffs
14:50between both nations will be a priority issue during the talks. The Mexican leader also
14:55called to continue negotiations on the free trade agreement between her country, the United
15:00States and Canada, and said she was willing to talk with Washington again if necessary.
15:07They had a first meeting and what they agreed is to continue working this week. A team from
15:17the Secretariat of the Economy will remain in Washington. They will be accompanied by
15:23some colleagues from the Secretariat of Finance to work with the United States Department
15:28of Commerce to establish agreements. What we are establishing is that we must prioritize,
15:34as I have said from the beginning, the relationship and the trade agreement with the United States.
15:41And we ask the United States to prioritize its trade agreement with Mexico and Canada,
15:47the so-called T-MEC.
15:52The Mexican president also reiterated her commitment to fight drug trafficking to prevent
15:57drugs from breaching young people in any nation as well as to support the United States in
16:01its humanitarian crisis.
16:07We are going to do what is in our hands, because we are going to help the United States because
16:11of this humanitarian crisis it has, but also because we do not want fentanyl to reach any
16:16place, we do not want drugs to reach any place, not only the United States but also young
16:22Mexicans or young people from any country in the world, we do not want that. And for
16:27that we have to collaborate and coordinate. All three countries have to analyze, where
16:32are the precursors coming from, where is it being manufactured, how is it being sold illegally,
16:39because where is drug use highest? In the United States.
16:45After three years of the Russian special operation in Ukraine, the US government changed its
16:50narrative on Moscow after voting against the Kyiv-sponsored resolution at the United Nations
16:56General Assembly. The resolution, which was drafted by Ukraine with the support of its
17:01European allies, made emphasis on the use of the term invasion, which was rejected by
17:06the United States, Argentina, Israel and other allies. On its part, Washington presented
17:12its own resolution calling for a definitive end to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
17:17At the proposal of the European Union, the text was amended, leading to the Trump administration
17:23173 countries abstentions from voting. Washington's dramatic shift on the conflict marks a major
17:29break with its European allies and coincides with Donald Trump's administration's bid
17:35to end the conflict and repair relations with Moscow.
17:50Russian forces on Sunday liberated the town of Topley in the Kyiv region, which had been
17:55occupied by the Ukrainian regime. The Russian ministry said that during the military operations
18:01the Northern Group killed at least 25 Ukrainian soldiers in the city of Kharkov, while the
18:06total number in Lugansk was 200. A number of weapons were also destroyed, including
18:11six field artillery guns and four military vehicles, most of them Western-manufactured.
18:17Since the beginning of the Russian special operation, Ukraine has lost 656 fighter planes,
18:24283 helicopters and more than 44,330 unmanned aerial vehicles.
18:36Outlets of the United States Agency for International Development, USAID, found that the agency
18:42spent more than 14 million US dollars in funding to non-governmental organizations
18:47between 2013 and 2014. Their data shows that, with USAID's support, the organizations provided
18:55more than 110 local facilitation grants and helped more than 550 organizations improve
19:02their internal structures. Similarly, the information details how these organizations
19:07supported and boosted the 2013 Ukrainian protest, known as Euromaidan, which led to
19:13the overthrow of President Viktor Yanukovych in February 2014.
19:24In France, explosions are reported at the facilities of the Russian consulate in the
19:29city of Marseille. According to local media, the Russian consul in France has confirmed
19:34that the explosions took place inside a building without causing any injuries. The spokeswoman
19:39for the Russian foreign ministry pointed out that the attack on the consulate had all the
19:44hallmarks of a terrorist attack and urged the French government to take the necessary
19:49measures to investigate and strengthen security on the territory of the Russian consulate.
19:54Earlier, Moscow's Foreign Intelligence Service warned that Ukraine could carry out terrorist
19:59attacks against Russian diplomatic missions in order to disrupt negotiations on the settlement
20:04of the conflict in Ukraine.
