Phil and James react to Anthony Patterson's mistake as poor Sunderland lose to hull City
Transcript
00:00Hiya there Phil and James at the Stadium of Light Sutherland have just lost 1-0 to Hull City.
00:07Phil, I mean let's not beat around the bush, extremely poor performance I thought.
00:11Yeah, I thought Sutherland were really, really poor. I think they missed big chances in the second half so they should have got something out of the game.
00:17But at the end of the day they made a big error early on, I think Patterson pushing a corner into his own net should have been dealt with.
00:22And I think after that Sutherland really struggled to build up any head of steam.
00:25I think what's concerning is very, very few players are at their best at the moment.
00:28I think there seems to be a lot of tired legs out there struggling to create chances.
00:33And I think at this time of the season what tends to happen is we've seen in recent weeks that teams who at the start of the season are really aggressive,
00:38like Hull City were under their previous manager.
00:40They completely change their style don't they because they're in trouble, they need to grind results out.
00:44And it's another team who's come here, who's defended quite well but has taken time out of the game,
00:48defended in a low block a lot of the time and at the moment Sutherland just can't find the answers to it.
00:52And that's one win in four at home, it's not automatic promotion form simple as that.
00:57An absolutely fair play to Hull for coming in frustrated.
00:59I thought they were decent, there didn't have to be anything more than that really.
01:02But it felt like a bit of a League One game in a sense, the way they sucked the life out of that.
01:06And Sutherland didn't really deal with that.
01:09Yeah, it was quite an extreme approach after the goal I would say in terms of the time-wasting that was going on.
01:14And I'm not simply criticising, they're in a relegation battle.
01:18It did feel like quite an almost Mourinho-esque performance from Hull at times today.
01:22That's not criticism, I understand the position they're in.
01:26You think back to the start of the season when a team like Sheffield Wednesday for example came here,
01:29had an ultra-aggressive game plan, playing out from the back, smashed up.
01:32Teams just aren't doing that at Sutherland anymore because they know what will happen.
01:35It's up to Sutherland to find the answers to that and at the moment they're just not.
01:38And I don't think it helps them to me.
01:40There looks to be a lot of tired legs out there.
01:42Obviously the injuries to Enzo Lefe and Dan Ballard, hopefully they're not serious.
01:45But that's a massive concern because at the moment Sutherland just can't find the answers in an attacking sense.
01:49Everything seems a lot slower and clunkier than it did here at the start of the season.
01:53So I think there's quite a lot for Lebrich to think about moving forward.
01:56Yes, lots to think about.
01:57Anthony Patterson is a player we've defended I think for large parts of the season.
02:02For me, he does look like he's stagnated a little bit coming into this final third of the season.
02:07The kicking thing in the command of the area does seem to be a bit of a mental block.
02:11Could have come for that corner, did try to come for it.
02:14It slipped through his hands.
02:15Roberts is sort of in the way but having watched it back two or three times,
02:18I don't really think there's any mitigation.
02:20I think a goalkeeper in the Championship has to be claiming that.
02:22I will also add that it's a mix-up by him in 0-9 in the first place to concede the corner.
02:27Had they dealt with that better, I don't even think it was going out for the corner, was it?
02:30It was going out for the goal kick.
02:31I mean, what have you made of Patterson?
02:33I think it was just sloppy all round from Sutherland today and I think it was the same from Patterson.
02:37It's a bad error. I don't think there's any two ways about it.
02:39I think it's very rare for Patterson to make errors.
02:42If I think back since he came into the team, it hasn't happened very often.
02:45I know there's discussions about the area of this game that people would like to see improved, the kicking and stuff.
02:48It is rare for us to say that he's probably cost Sutherland points.
02:51I think that's worth pointing out.
02:52But, for sure, it's been a difficult week and you can see to me that the confidence and the form isn't quite there.
02:58So, I think that's another thing for the Braves to think about.
03:00I agree we haven't watched it back.
03:01Robson does get in the way a little bit, but I expect the goalkeeper to deal with it and I'm sure Patterson feels that way as well.
03:06Does Sutherland to you at the moment feel like a team that are too good to finish seventh with the sort of stuck-at-that-no-man's-land?
03:13Not good enough to go, but automatically going through the motions a little bit?
03:17Yeah, I think so.
03:18I think they've hit the wall a little bit.
03:19That's my feeling.
03:20I don't want to overreact to one home performance because they did a lot of good things at Leeds.
03:23But, if I take the last four home games…
03:25You could say it's been covered.
03:26You know, they did deserve to be looting, but I do feel the home record has been hanging by a bit of a thread.
03:30Certainly, those Plymouth and Watford games.
03:32I do think they've hit a bit of a wall.
03:33I think there are players like… I'm not singling players out.
03:36I'm just saying as an example.
03:37I think Chris Frick needs a rest.
03:38Yeah, he does.
03:39I think Dennis Serkin looks a bit lethargic to me.
03:40I'm not picking on those two.
03:41I think there's a lot of players in the same boat.
03:42Isidore, nowhere near the Isidore that we've seen this season.
03:45It's probably going to happen, given the amount of football he's got to play.
03:47So, I think Leif Brinson will need to think about freshening things up.
03:51Just very quickly, we need a little bit of perspective.
03:53294 days since Sunderland's last league loss at home.
03:5617 games unbeaten with us all previously coming into the day.
03:59First home championship loss under Lebris.
04:02It's been an okay season.
04:03We don't want it to fizzle out.
04:04It's been an excellent season.
04:05And what we're talking about now doesn't detract from what Sunderland have done through the first two thirds of the season,
04:09which has been superb.
04:10And it's still all to play for in terms of…
04:13Yes, it is now looking like it's probably going to be the playoffs for that.
04:15But we will have all changed at the start of the season.
04:17So, perspective for sure.
04:18But at the same time, there's no doubt that there's some things to think about
04:21and some things that need to get better.
04:22Brilliant.
