00:00This election in Germany is happening in bitter cold winter for the first time in decades.
00:07Is this significant at all?
00:10Well Leanne, I think it tells you exactly just how we got here.
00:13This election was not meant to be held right now, it was originally slated for the kind
00:17of European spring, summer period, it would have made it much nicer one would imagine
00:21for all of those candidates out door knocking and trying to canvas on the streets.
00:26The reason we're having it now in the depths of the European winter is because Olaf Scholz's
00:31former government collapsed after a fairly spectacular divorce with some of those parties
00:36that were part of it, and so right now we've been thrust into this early election.
00:41Nevertheless, they're trying to not let the weather affect the campaign trail, you certainly
00:45still see many party volunteers out on the street trying to bolster their base, but it
00:50certainly is I think a signal of the fact that this is an early election, it was not
00:54intended to take place right now, but those leading candidates for Chancellor are hoping
01:00that there might be brighter days ahead I guess you could say for them and their parties
01:04as they conduct that race for the Chancellery with less than 48 hours to go until polls
01:09open.
