00:00A disturbing news coming in from Karnataka at an Islamic school, a madrasa, where there
00:07has been charges of assault on female students that have come in, this is from Bengaluru
00:12and all recorded on a CCTV in a madrasa.
00:15Look at that.
00:16Parents are alleging there was serious physical assault, sexual assault even at that madrasa
00:22and remember all of this was caught on camera.
00:24Look at that brutal slapping, beating, kicking a minor girl.
00:29We do not know what happened, what was the reason, you can see other children watching
00:33it in horror.
00:34An incident of an assault on girl students has been reported from a madrasa, this is
00:38Hegre Nagar in Bengaluru, identified as Jamia Ayesha Siddiqa Al-Banat, the madrasa's name.
00:46The accused Mohammed Hassan Ali allegedly summoned some of the girl students to the
00:50office and assaulted them.
00:52Remember inappropriately touching them, forcing them and then beating them.
00:56The girls are clearly scared.
00:59Now he is accusing them of wrongdoing, but these are little girls, little children.
01:03He places a pencil I believe between the fingers and then starts to beat these little girls
01:09who you can see in fear, screaming in pain.
01:13Now the parents also are demanding justice now because remember this is not conjecture,
01:17this is not rhetoric.
01:19Look at that, absolutely pains me and this man clearly is no experienced teacher.
01:24You can see he is a young man kicking, who gave him the right to kick a young girl student,
01:30beat her.
01:31Thankfully it was all recorded on CCTV because one doesn't even know how worse it actually
01:38got.
01:39Who gave him the right to behave like this?
01:41Let's listen in to reactions coming in.
01:54Absolutely disturbing and I hope immediate action is taken on this.
02:15India Today's editor Nagarjun Dwarkanath joins me on this.
02:18Nagarjun, good morning.
02:19Tell me this, what exactly happened, what are the details picking up, how are the parents
02:23escalating this because often in these conservative schools even the parents can sometimes take
02:27a step back.
02:28So what are you hearing, what exactly happened and how is the fight now escalating on this?
02:34Good morning Pooja.
02:35This incident occurred on 7th 16th in the evening 4.30 is what we are told.
02:41Accused Mohammed Asfan is related to the hostel in charge of the madrasa as well and he is
02:47accused of beating up the minor kid for wrong doing and also having complaints while playing
02:53not maintaining rules and also splitting the rice.
02:56Some petty issues is what we are told and finally when the kid complained to the parents,
03:00the parents lodged a complaint in Kothnur police station in Bangalore North East division
03:05limits and finally Hassan was arrested by the Kothnur police on 17th February and has
03:11been taken to judicial custody as we speak.
03:14But the shocking visuals prove that what happens when parents are away and how the school authorities
03:20treat the kids in this.
03:21Hassan was beating up the children just for petty issues like lot of complaints that you
03:26are not maintaining rules while playing, you are spilling rice while carrying from a plate.
03:30Such petty issues is what we are told and finally when the kid complained, the family
03:34took it to the police station and accused has been arrested.
03:37Okay so he has been arrested, that's good news.
03:39Remember there has to be discipline but there's a reason that guidelines have come in.
03:44Specially when you are dealing with young minor age female students.
03:48Abrinda Adige, social activist is also joining me on the phone line.
03:52Abrinda tell me this, in any way if anyone is watching right now saying, but thoda discipline
03:58karna chahiye.
03:59What would you say to these visuals on your screen?
04:02First and foremost, all of these hostel wardens and supervisors and management must understand
04:09that they are not parents.
04:11One.
04:12So when we talk about discipline, there are two different kinds.
04:15There is a discipline that you have a right to do as a institutional guide or mentor and
04:22that absolutely is not caning, beating, slapping or hitting a child because that goes against
04:30the Juvenile Justice Act.
04:31We are very very clear, no institution dare take up that responsibility.
04:36We must also applaud the parents for taking the courage to make that complaint because
04:42often parents' hands are tied because institutions will continue to say, this was for the good
04:48of your child.
04:49We have a, you know, you have put the child in the hostel because you cannot look after
04:53the child, uncontrollable child.
04:56So you are at fault, making the parent feel guilty that they have admitted the child to
05:01a hostel.
05:02So here the hostel authorities, specially madrasas, because they have a lot of religious
05:07connotation attached.
05:09So that becomes a double burden on parents.
05:12Should I even report about an organization that is so closely associated and attached
05:18to my religion?
05:19And all of this is a huge burden, not only on the parents, but also on the children.
05:24So even when they beat up the children, they make it sound and look like they have a God
05:29given right to beat the child and correct the child.
05:34They don't understand that they are pushing the child through so much of mental and emotional
05:38turmoil.
05:39That's right.
05:40And some of this turmoil, this childhood trauma can actually continue.
05:43Absolutely right.
05:44I think good of parents also to have come in here.
05:47Remember, what you're looking at is not a slap of a discipline, or it's not a punishment
05:53that you would be aware about.
05:55This is kicking.
05:56He's kicking a girl student, possibly repeatedly, puts a pencil and then starts to slap her,
06:02beat her.
06:03This is a man doing it to a young female student, remember.
06:06The board says, giving Islamic and formal education to these young minds.
06:11You don't instill fear in this manner.
06:13The CCTV has caught it.
06:14At least the accused, we are told, Mohammed Hasan Ali has been arrested, but it also needs
06:18an overhaul.
06:19You need discipline, but you need to follow guidelines.
06:22This is not instilling discipline.
06:24It's instilling fear in the mind of young girl students.
06:27Thank you very much, Nagarjun and Brinda Adige for the latest on this.
