00:00When playing Nintendo's biggest games, it's pretty easy to tell the heroes apart from
00:10the villains.
00:11The good guys are usually squeaky clean and do nothing wrong, or at least nothing that
00:16outright hurts anyone.
00:18But that isn't always necessarily true.
00:21Welcome to Mojo Plays and today we're looking at deeds done by Nintendo characters that
00:26were anything but heroic.
00:28Bear in mind that most of our entries are just for a bit of fun and shouldn't be taken
00:33that seriously.
00:40But before we dive in, we publish new content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and
00:45ring the bell to get notified about our latest videos.
00:48Possessing Living Creatures
00:51Super Mario Odyssey
01:01Super Mario Odyssey is built around the concept of using Cappy, Mario's new sentient hat
01:07companion, to take control of various objects and creatures.
01:12And if the cinematic of his first capture, an adorable little frog, is anything to go
01:17a pretty uncomfortable experience if what you're possessing is a living thing.
01:22Say goodbye to free will because your sole purpose now lies at the whims of Mario.
01:27Sure it's mostly designed and presented as a fun mechanic to interact with the levels,
01:33but imagine you were just walking along, minding your own business, when suddenly your body
01:38is taken over, with no way out of it.
01:41This is clearly worse in cases where Mario possesses someone who has thought and speech,
01:47like Lakitu, Glidon, or even a human being, just so he can play a minigame with an RC
01:53car.
02:00Working for Grizzco
02:02Splatoon 2
02:09Splatoon 2 introduced a new multiplayer mode called Salmon Run, in which the Inklings would
02:13complete work for the shady Grizzco Industries.
02:17Your task was to defeat Salmonids, clearly this game's version of Salmon Fish, collect
02:23their eggs, and earn different rewards based on how well you did.
02:28In case you couldn't tell by the radio that CEO Mr. Grizz uses to communicate with you,
02:34shaped like a bear with a salmon in its mouth, you are clearly taking unborn Salmonid children
02:40and feeding them to this guy.
02:43We understand the concept of the food chain, and with most mammals extinct in this world,
02:48Mr. Grizz has had to get creative.
02:51But sacrificing eggs to a hungry bear for money and gear is pretty cold.
03:01Eating the Shipment
03:03Pikmin 2
03:11In Pikmin 2, we're introduced to Louie, a hapless hero who plays the role of second
03:17playable protagonist to Olimar.
03:19The plot follows the duo returning to the Pikmin planet in search of treasure.
03:24Their company is on the verge of bankruptcy, not helped by the fact that Louie lost a valuable
03:30shipment of rare carrots to a ravenous space bunny.
03:34Except this never actually happened.
03:37The epilogue reveals that Louie ate the shipment of carrots and just lied about it, causing
03:43the events of the game and pulling Olimar back to the planet he had just escaped from.
03:48What a jackass.
03:51You might think Olimar isn't so great either, using the cutesy Pikmin to fight and carry
03:56heavy objects on his behalf, but the games imply his leadership saved them from extinction.
04:02You know what species wasn't on the verge of extinction?
04:05Segway!
04:14Enslaving an Entire Species
04:17Pokemon series
04:26This one's an oldie, but a goodie.
04:29In every entry in the Pokemon series, you control an adventurer who goes around stealing
04:34creatures from their natural habitats and using them to battle others against their
04:38will.
04:39While the games and adaptations have long implemented a philosophy that the Pokemon
04:44don't mind this and bond with their trainers, it's still a bit unsettling when you think
04:49about it.
04:50We have to imagine that some Pokemon, if not all of them, would be more comfortable in
04:55the wild with their kind.
04:57Granted, your trainer is never the first to have captured Pokemon, instead having been
05:02born into this world.
05:04But you do wholeheartedly benefit from it.
05:07Some games have even introduced organizations who want to free Pokemon, yet they're painted
05:12as the bad guys.
05:14Ridiculous.
05:15Brutal Putdowns
05:26Super Mario 64 DS
05:39While the Toads are not often placed in the hero role, they are on the side of the good
05:44guys, and have joined Mario on several adventures.
05:48But in the remake of Super Mario 64 for the DS, they can be viciously mean towards Luigi,
05:55a character you won't find on this list because he's never done anything wrong.
05:59Whenever Luigi talks to a Toad, some will treat him like absolute garbage, telling him
06:05not to get in Mario's way or calling him quote, the world's most inept and least charismatic
06:11brother.
06:12Dude, what is your problem?
06:15Luigi has saved the Mushroom Kingdom almost as many times as Mario has, and is literally
06:21in the middle of doing it right now.
06:29Unleashed Nightmares on Dream Land, Kirby's Adventure
06:38The second game in the Kirby series follows our hero in search of the Star Rod, which
06:43powers the Fountain of Dreams, allowing the citizens of Dream Land to, you guessed it,
06:49dream.
06:50You see, King Dedede broke it into several parts and gave them to his minions.
06:55After rebuilding the Star Rod, Kirby returns to the fountain and whoops the king's butt.
07:01Maybe if Kirby had stopped to ask why King Dedede did this, he would have realized that
07:06it was in an effort to stop Nightmare, a powerful entity that had corrupted the fountain,
07:11causing actual nightmares for Dream Land's citizens.
07:15But because King Dedede was the villain of the first game, Kirby went about making things
07:20worse.
07:21Well, at least he put a stop to Nightmare in the end.
07:32Exploiting Family Members, Donkey Kong Series
07:41Like Toad, Cranky Kong isn't often in the hero role, but since he is also on the side
07:48of the good guys and is playable in Tropical Freeze, we're going to include him.
07:53Plus, he sucks.
07:55Just look at his actions throughout the series.
07:57In Donkey Kong Country 2, while DK is kidnapped, he charges Diddy and Dixie just for helpful
08:03tips in the world, a service he provided for free in the first game.
08:08In Donkey Kong 64, he charges money for new abilities, and in Donkey Kong Country Returns,
08:14he charges money for helpful items.
08:16Other Kongs charge for services too, but he does so while belittling his family members
08:22about how dumb or worthless they are when they're out there trying to save their home.
08:27Hey Cranky, maybe don't be so stingy and donate an item or two to the cause next time, would ya?
08:37Poor Treatment of Animals, Donkey Kong Series and Super Mario Series
08:43Well, seeing as how Cranky Kong was canonically the first Donkey Kong, maybe his bitterness
08:54is justified.
08:56The first Donkey Kong game chronicles Mario's escaped pet gorilla kidnapping his then-girlfriend
09:01Pauline.
09:02However, in the sequel, Mario retaliates and boy does he cross the line.
09:08He locks DK up, prompting DK Jr. to come to his rescue.
09:12Wait, did DK Jr. exist in the background of the first game?
09:16Because if Cranky was separated from his son to be some guy's pet, I can't say I'm
09:21too surprised at how he acted.
09:22Plus, look at the size of that cage.
09:25It's so small there's no room to move around in.
09:28Then you have Super Mario World and the introduction of Yoshi.
09:33In that game, to get Yoshi to stick out his tongue and eat enemies, Mario punches him
09:38in the back of the head.
09:39Of course, there are also loads of players who leapt from Yoshi's back to save themselves
09:44as he fell to his doom.
09:46Thankfully, Mario seems to have long left his animal abuse days behind him.
09:54SPARING THE FINAL METROID
10:01METROID 2 RETURN OF SAMUS
10:10We wouldn't often see the eradication of a species as a good thing.
10:15But in the case of Metroids, we'll make an exception.
10:18These creatures were created to destroy a harmful parasite before growing vicious, turning
10:23against their creators, and consuming everything they could.
10:27They are pure evil, and they deserve to be wiped from existence.
10:32In Metroid 2 and its remake, Return of Samus, the bounty hunter is given that very job.
10:37And she does it until she finds an egg that hatches right in front of her.
10:42Admittedly, the final Metroid imprints on her, so we're sure completing the task would
10:46be very hard to do.
10:48But in sparing it, Samus brings about a lot more trouble and death.
10:53In Super Metroid, it results in the deaths of multiple Galactic Federation scientists.
10:59In Other M, its DNA leads to the recreation of more Metroids, and therefore, even more
11:05death.
11:06While that same DNA does save her life when she's attacked by an ex-parasite in Fusion,
11:11it also leads to her being hunted in Dread.
11:14So yeah, she should have killed it.
11:26Destroyed a reality.
11:29The Legend of Zelda, Link's Awakening.
11:39Other than barging into people's homes, breaking their pots, and stealing their money,
11:44Link is a pretty stand-up guy.
11:46But in Link's Awakening, he knowingly goes about causing the deletion of an entire island
11:51and its citizens.
11:53Sorry to spoil a game more than three decades old, but as he goes about his journey, Link
11:58discovers that the entirety of Koholint Island is a creation of the Wind Fish's dream,
12:04and that the bosses in its dungeons are nightmares.
12:07However, these people all seem real.
12:10They all have personalities and desires, especially Marin, the girl who finds and cares
12:15for Link after his opening shipwreck.
12:18He's told waking the Wind Fish is the only way he'll get home, but completing the game
12:23doesn't feel right as every person we've grown to know simply vanishes.
