00:00I wasn't expecting that our team could come so far, you know, and winning the finals and beating all the nine of the team were, you know, great on the papers.
00:11Hello, good evening. Welcome you for the last episode of IPL's special segment of Straight Back with Mr Cricket UAE and Gulf News.
00:31With me I've got a full panel of the fans, you know, who are going to look into how the season panned out for them.
00:38Of course, the happiest person of them will be, you know, Gujarat's… I think we've got the fan from Gujarat, Akash.
00:49Yeah, I'm here.
00:50Yeah, hi. Congratulations.
00:52Thank you. Thank you.
00:54Yes. Now, before we come to you, we have got Mr Anish Sajan, Mr Cricket himself.
00:59He's just managed to come out of the Narendra Modi Stadium and is on his way back to the hotel.
01:06The Gulf News Sports Editor, aka Satish. So we have got quite a big panel here.
01:12Anishbhai, I will come to you first up. How was it? 100,000 people, the home team winning.
01:19And this is only the second time after Chennai doing it years back.
01:23This is Gujarat Titans. And what makes it special, of course, is their debut season.
01:28What are your feelings? What are you seeing there?
01:34I think Anishbhai is… We lost him, I think, Gautam.
01:39Yeah, we have dropped him.
01:41Okay, we will come back to him. Okay, then I will come to Akash, to be very fair.
01:48Akash, after the auction, as things spanned out, when people were thinking that this is a side which is strong in bowling,
01:57batting, the recruitment was not up to speed. So, did you think that you will come this far?
02:03What is your basic reaction to this?
02:05Honestly speaking, I wasn't expecting that our team could come so far.
02:13And winning the finals and beating the… All the 9 of the team were great on the papers.
02:21Gujarat Titans alone, if you see on paper, were not that good.
02:24Our bowling attack was definitely very strong. But on paper, we weren't the strongest team of all.
02:30But somehow, the team managed and we have won the cup.
02:39It was an all-rounder performance. Each and every player was given their role.
02:46And that role was definitely been through by them.
02:50The bowling was very strong. Shami, Ferguson, Rashid Khan, all of them were continuously the wicket-takers and with good economic rate.
02:59And Hardik Pandya leading the team with very good efforts.
03:02No one expected Pandya could lead the team in such a way. But he did it.
03:08And although our batting was weak, but still, there was someone or the other who always stood till the end.
03:15Be it Saha, Gill or Miller. Miller was a very…
03:24I think, Akash, they kind of redefined the concept of what a batting line-up of a successful T20 team can be.
03:35Can be, yeah.
03:37Anisbhai, can you hear me?
03:40I think still there is a problem with the link. I will come to Satish.
03:47Satish, it turned out to be almost prophetic. You said history is beckoning Hardik Pandya. So, it has.
03:54And if at the beginning of the league, somebody, even when they started off on a good note, about three wins or four wins.
04:03I think we were discussing this question that whether he could be seriously taken as a captaincy contender.
04:09But I am failing to recall that when was this kind of a complete performance that came from a captain.
04:19Because the advantage is, of course, he is an all-rounder.
04:22And the thinking cricketer that he turned out to be, the way he utilised his resources.
04:27A word from you about Hardik before we move on to the other facts.
04:32Gautam, the first couple of games, certainly they had the momentum.
04:37But what I saw was there was a method in the madness.
04:40And for everything, Hardik was really there putting things in place.
04:45He was putting the jigsaw puzzle one by one and getting it done.
04:49And I could see that he was doing it with a purpose.
04:54And I am sure with somebody like Gary Kirsten in this think tank, obviously, there must have been a lot of thought process going in.
05:05And I felt he had a lot of shades of what Dhoni did.
05:09And he was also like Dhoni, one of the captains who wanted to step in and perform.
05:15So many things worked in his favour.
05:18And they also had the momentum.
05:20Along with the momentum, there was a team effort.
05:22And I think everything came together and it gelled well, like exactly the way a winning team, a champion team should be.
05:31And due credit to Hardik Pandya for taking it forward and playing it upfront.
05:37Like, leading it from the front and taking it all the way until the final.
05:42Where today, he again proved that he is not ready to sit on his laurels.
05:47And he was willing to take on the opponent even in the final by coming in the middle overs and choking Rajasthan Royals.
05:55Brilliant.
05:56It was all over.
05:57I would say the team effort and Hardik Pandya's performance was like icing on the cake of Gujarat titles this year.
06:07Right.
06:08I'll come to Ram Ganesh.
06:11Ram, if you can see me, I was trying to honour Shane Wan's memory today by wearing a Rajasthan Royals jersey myself.
06:18But yes, it was not the day.
06:23You know, what do you think?
06:25I mean, obviously, when you score 130 on a weekend, when you are not being able to, you know, every day need not be a Sunday.
06:33But Rajasthan Royals batting, what they did was, they couldn't play that waiting game.
06:37They couldn't take this score to something like what could be called somewhat near a pass score.
06:42So where do you think they failed?
06:44I mean, they lost the match there, the moment they were all out for 130.
06:48Right.
06:49Yeah, the game was lost in the first half itself.
06:51And I think, I mean, I don't know.
06:53It's disappointing to say that.
06:55I guess in hindsight, we should not have batted first.
06:58We won the toss for the second time.
07:01The pressure is always going to be on the team batting first to put up a score.
07:05You don't know what score to put up.
07:07And in the second qualifiers, we saw that the pitch got a little better to bat on in the second half.
07:13And that's what we did.
07:15We managed to get through.
07:16I guess what I would say is, in terms of where we lost it was, one was that in terms of batting,
07:22we cannot keep relying on Butler.
07:24Samson threw his wicket again for the hundredth time, I think.
07:27As Anisbhai had said, Sanju Samson had to put his hands up at the final and say,
07:33you know, I'm here as a batsman to do something for you.
07:36And I'm not just going to be scoring the 20s and 30s.
07:38He's too good for his 20s and 30s.
07:40So very disappointing there.
07:41Every other batsman struggled.
07:44Hitmayer, after his comeback, was not the same batsman.
07:47And I guess, I think, I don't know, I hope we stop backing Rehan Parag now.
07:53I think it's high time.
07:54We've seen for an entire season, the batting just collapsed.
07:57And I think in the bowling, of course, it hurt that we had a drop catch in the first over.
08:02But I have to say one thing.
08:04I cannot understand Sanju Samson's captaincy leaving Ashwin till the 12th over.
08:09He's bowling the 16th and the 18th over.
08:11I just don't get the experiment that we have done this entire season.
08:15Some of them has worked, but it just goes to show that, you know,
08:18you cannot experiment like this.
08:19In contrast, Hardik had his plans from the start.
08:22I think what happened today was we were outplayed by a genuinely better team.
08:26I had, I actually have been in the previous, how do you say, during this league stages,
08:32I was guilty of actually thinking that Gujarat have been lucky, but they just peaked.
08:36They just peaked from there.
08:38I think Kudos, the better team, I think, I guess, won today.
08:40Right.
08:41I think, Gautam, I'd love to add a couple of things.
08:43Sorry.
08:44I'd love to add a couple of things to what Rama said.
08:46One thing is, as much as they relied too much on Butler,
08:52if you look at the averages or the scores or even the top performers,
08:564, 5, 6, Pandya, Gill and Miller, these are the top three performers.
09:01So, they were playing as a team that was, as a unit.
09:06As a unit, they were playing.
09:07Whereas here, Butler was number one.
09:09Samson was number nine, with 28 as an average.
09:12And Padikkal is about 26 as an average.
09:16It can't rely on these one player to come and…
09:20We have seen it time and again, Chris Gayle or Virat Kohli.
09:23It can take you up to the final, but it cannot give you the victory.
09:27It's very difficult.
09:29And secondly, I think that's one of the reasons…
09:34Maybe I don't like the way Sanju captained so far.
09:37But at least in the final, one defence could be in favour of him.
09:42Ashwin has been leaking runs.
09:44So, they wanted to put pressure on Gujarat as much as they could go far.
09:50So, that's when they had to push Ashwin to the end.
09:55And as we expected, the moment Ashwin came in, he leaked 15 runs in the first over.
10:00And another 12-13 runs in the second.
10:02And so, the match pitted away and it became easier for Gujarat at that point of time.
10:07So, yes. These are the two points which I wanted to add.
10:11Right. In fact, I will take this opportunity to again ask Ram before we move on to the other fans.
10:18You know, Ram, this Rajasthan Royals…
10:22Let us put aside the Shane Warne effect, etc.
10:26But Rajasthan Royals had waited for 14 seasons to make another final.
10:30And the best takeaway from this campaign is…
10:35They are once again looking like a team who are a genuine contender to make that last four again next season.
10:41And possibly give another shot at winning it.
10:44So, how do you look at that and what are the kind of changes?
10:47Do you think there could be a change at the top?
10:51Yeah, I think the batting definitely has been…
10:55No, I am talking about captaincy here.
10:58I don't think that's going to change.
11:00Although, yes, I would say that…
11:02I mean, I would actually have…
11:04Even Butler could make a better captain or somebody else.
11:07But the way the partnership between Sanga and Samson goes, they are not going to change that.
11:12So, that's going to keep staying the same.
11:14Maybe there will be some personal changes.
11:16Yeah, I mean, I had actually joked about it earlier that until now, until today, Rajasthan had a 100% record of winning the finals.
11:22So, now that has changed.
11:25Let's make it 50%.
11:28I will just hold you on there, Ram.
11:31I think I can see Aniz Bhai…
11:34Yes, sorry, guys.
11:35There was a lot of congestion. So, I got stuck.
11:37So, Gautam, let me first answer your question about watching a match with probably more than 100,000 people in the stadium.
11:44It was a one-off experience.
11:46I had seen the finals in Australia.
11:48But obviously, India was not playing.
11:49So, I did not have that sort of emotions running high.
11:52But this match, from ball one, you could feel that emotions running high between all the fans.
11:58And obviously, 90,000 plus people were supporting one team, Gujarat.
12:02And like you call MS Dhoni the Thala of Chennai.
12:06I want to say one line for Hardik Pandya, Mota Bhai.
12:09Mota Bhai means the big brother.
12:11And the big brother, the captain led from the front.
12:13First with the ball.
12:15It was a fiery spell.
12:16You can't take it away.
12:17The way he got the wickets of Sanju.
12:19He got the wicket of the dangerous Butler and then Hetmeyer.
12:22And ran with the bat in a precarious position.
12:25Being 20 for 2, losing Saha and Wade.
12:29Come back and bat and play the innings.
12:31You know, took the game away from Rajasthan.
12:33And it was all about Hardik Pandya leading from the front.
12:37So, I want to say, he came, he saw and he conquered.
12:40Right.
12:42In fact, this is not the first game.
12:45He has done that.
12:47We saw in the qualifier in Calcutta.
12:51How he has adopted this new approach of playing risky cricket.
12:56And then he knows the perfect situation when to open up.
13:00So, this cricket sense that we are seeing in him.
13:04Apart from being the captain.
13:06Today's bowling was a fantastic example of that.
13:10So, now, would you seriously consider him to be a contender for the white-ball captaincy for India?
13:17I am very, very glad that Gautam you asked this question.
13:23It's not about his individual performance.
13:24I wanted to hit the nail and you have hit the nail.
13:26That his captainship throughout the tournament.
13:29He was a student's captain.
13:31Not just because he batted and bowled well in some innings or fielded well.
13:35But his bowling changes.
13:36Let's take today's example.
13:38First important change.
13:39He brought in Ferguson.
13:40Who has got a much better temperament.
13:42And solid match experience compared to the West Indian bowler whom they dropped.
13:46Second thing.
13:47You know, when the chips were down.
13:49I would not say the chips were down.
13:5054-1.
13:51He brought himself in.
13:52He got that couple of wickets.
13:53That crucial wicket.
13:54And then, you know, the bowling change to bring that left-hander.
13:58He held on to the left-hander.
13:59Till Hetmayar and all the left-handers were there.
14:01That Sai Kishore.
14:02And he picked up two crucial wickets.
14:04Every bowler, he went to it.
14:06It touched gold.
14:07Like, whatever Hardik was doing.
14:08And not from this tournament.
14:10Not this match.
14:11Throughout the tournament, if you watch.
14:13That the sharpness which he has developed being as a player for Mumbai Indians.
14:17Could be seen delivering this tournament.
14:19When you ask me this question.
14:20Yes, I would dare say.
14:22Not just because India has won.
14:23I know sometimes people think IPL is not a platform.
14:25But this guy has got the talent.
14:27And most importantly, the temperament.
14:30And in today's situation, India, I wish can make that bold decision.
14:33Of making him as the captain as they did in MS Dhoni for 2007.
14:37Absolutely.
14:38Because if you remember, Rohit's development as a captain.
14:43We came to know him as a captain when he delivered first with the IPL.
14:48And he grew the other way around.
14:50And Hardik is a cricketer whose genesis has come from IPL.
14:53So, there is no reason why he can't be considered as one.
14:57On that note, I will quickly move to the RCB fan in our middle.
15:05Sanjay, why is there 12 o'clock mark on your face?
15:13Sanjay, I think the scar is still raw.
15:18But yes, it does hurt when it turns into a 15-year wait.
15:24When you have got arguably one of the world's best batsmen batting there.
15:29His 973 runs could not be overhauled.
15:32But yes, at the end of the day, once again a case of Sonia Yates so far.
15:37I mean, playing by and large consistent cricket.
15:40But in that qualifier when it mattered the most.
15:43They were just blown away by this man called Josh Butler.
15:46So, quickly your reaction.
15:48And what are you expecting for the next season, Sanjay?
15:51Yes, actually on the first nod, on the first part, 157 was not at all a good score to put on.
15:59Because yes, Butler was fresh.
16:0287 or 85 not out.
16:04Because in the qualifier one, Butler, even though he started slow, he took on the score.
16:11So, even in the league stage when you see Butler has the rate of conversion.
16:16One match he scores 80 and the next match he is coming back with 100.
16:20The same thing happened here.
16:21And yes, losing the toss was a disadvantage because we were put to bat first.
16:28And yes, Kohli taking on the first over six, I expected something might be different from that.
16:38So again, that outside of the ball pressure, gets Kohli out.
16:45Then Fab getting out in such a way, giving catch to Ashwin.
16:49Yes, batting we were not to the par.
16:51Maxwell not scoring.
16:53What I want to ask you or pick your brains about is, you see, I mean, you've got a combination which worked.
17:02I mean, you got a team where, you know, despite Virat being largely, you know, can be termed as a failure in this tournament.
17:10But still you went up all the way because you were getting those contributions.
17:15Virat and not only that, Fab, who was such a key factor for CSK triumphs even last year.
17:20He couldn't deliver.
17:22But the team had gone up all the way because of Patidar, because of Lomror, because of, you know, DK finished with the best strike rate.
17:32So what else, you know, the RCB management must be tearing their hair.
17:38What more do we need to do?
17:40So as a fan, what do you feel?
17:42I mean, what can be the way out of this?
17:44It's like, just openly, I'm telling you, retaining Siraj was one of the bad decisions that RCB took this year.
17:49Because, yes, leaving Chahal and retaining Siraj.
17:53And so this is how he delivers.
17:54Spot on, Sanjay. Spot on.
17:55Two overs on 31. Just being a fan, I'm totally telling it out even in the live show.
18:00Retaining Siraj was a bad decision because just he performs two seasons.
18:03Then my head of Chahal is a very bad decision.
18:08You can see Chahal how he's performing for Rajasthan.
18:10He's been a standout spinner for the Rajasthan in the years to come.
18:14For 15 years, no other spinner than Shane Auer has performed.
18:17He went on to win the Purple Cap.
18:20You know, they will, yeah, he's going back to the Purple Cap.
18:23Yes.
18:24I will quickly move on to, you know, the other fans and get their lowdown as to how they summed up some of the performance.
18:31Sanket, are you there?
18:33Sanket Jain?
18:35Yes, I'm here.
18:36Yeah.
18:37Hi Sanket.
18:38Welcome Sanket.
18:39You know, DC, it's been a bit of an up and down performance after, you know, a very good three seasons where they kind of turned around the fortunes.
18:48They began looking like a potential, you know, title threat.
18:52This year, there were a number of factors.
18:54I mean, of course, the campaign was hampered by that phase where, you know, COVID hit home.
19:00Then, you know, Rishabh Pant's form was, you know, he didn't bat like last year.
19:06Then, Anrich Nockier, I mean, though he was retained, he came back.
19:10You didn't get the same kind of services from Nockier in the absence of Kagi Zurabada.
19:16So, what do you think?
19:18I mean, how do you sum up?
19:19I think overall, they managed to salvage the situation a lot.
19:22I mean, they were just pipped at the post.
19:25What do you think, Sanket?
19:26I mean, what should be the way forward?
19:28So, you know, some people might expect that, you know.
19:31I might say that, you know, this change should be made or that change should be made.
19:35But I mean, when you look at Delhi Capitals, you need to look at the past four years, you know.
19:41Because basically, since the first year of their change to Delhi Capitals, Delhi has been qualifying each of the seasons, you know.
19:49This is the first time that Delhi Capitals, you know, since they've changed, has not qualified.
19:55And that too, you know, we all know.
19:57It was a very bare margin, you know.
19:59Like, they still finished at fifth.
20:02It's not like they finished in the bottom three or something like that.
20:05They still finished in fifth.
20:07And it was just a matter of one match.
20:10I, as a Delhi fan, feel really confident, you know, to say that I still feel that Delhi is one of the best teams.
20:17You know, because the players that you look that they have, the foreign players, I mean, David Warner, he came back again.
20:24You know, he just showed everyone, you know, why, you know, he's one of the best batsmen in IPL, like, you know, all time.
20:31Because he's had three orange caps.
20:33This season also, you know, he's played really well.
20:36Taken over, you know.
20:38You know, a very good responsibility for Delhi, you know, leading from the front.
20:42Then you have Mitchell Marsh, you know, who really fired up at the end of the season, you know.
20:46Showed some promising knocks.
20:48Then Roman Powell, you know, you could see glimpses of him, you know.
20:51And innings or two over there, you know, his bare strength that he, you know, possesses.
20:56Yeah, Nokia definitely, you know, an issue with him.
20:59But it's not really, you know, that you can blame him because he's been coming from an injury, you know.
21:04So, like, he's been away from cricket, you know, from five to six months.
21:08And we all know the level and, you know, the level of IPL as a tournament, you know.
21:14So, it does take time for a fast bowler, especially for someone like Nokia, you know.
21:18Who's used to bowling regular 150k plus balls, you know.
21:21So, it does take time for someone like him to get back into the groove and perform.
21:25Because before he came back into the camp, we could see that Mustafizur Rahman, you know,
21:30who was playing instead of him in the team, performed really well.
21:34So, I mean, he also had a lot of pressure, you know, to come back in the team and perform.
21:39So, maybe, you know, he could not do as well.
21:41But I still feel that, you know, Delhi is one team that I feel that does not need any changing
21:46moving on to the next, you know, season.
21:49And we should keep as many things as, you know, the same as possible.
21:54Stick to the same 11.
21:56I feel they have, you know, a very high chance of, you know, qualifying or even, you know, winning the next tournament.
22:03Because the team seems really stable and really promising this year.
22:08You know, we could see Kuldeep Yadav dropped by KKR.
22:11They did not opt for him.
22:12But he finished with 21 wickets, you know, which is really good.
22:15You know, you could see a new Kuldeep Yadav over there.
22:17And if you look at, yeah, there's definitely something to worry about in Rishabh Pant's form.
22:22But he's a young player, you know.
22:24And we all know the talent that he also possesses.
22:28And sooner or later, you know, it's going to come out from him.
22:30Maybe this was an underpass season from him.
22:33But I can, you know, I back him that he'll come next season and do what we all know him for.
22:39Right.
22:40Anisbhai, I'll just come quickly to you.
22:43Can you hear me?
22:44Yes, yes.
22:45Very clearly.
22:46Yeah, yeah.
22:47Anisbhai, Delhi was, you know, post-auction when we were doing these chats.
22:51You know, from the strength on paper, you had pinned a lot of hopes on Delhi.
22:55And overall, finally, they didn't do badly.
22:59They just missed out by that, you know, by that whisker.
23:02How do some of their performance and as our, you know, as you said that, you know, they don't need to tinker with it.
23:10Just see how it goes.
23:11And, you know, finishing fifth out of 10 teams after all.
23:15How do you think Delhi's performance of future panning out next year?
23:20Yes.
23:21They don't need to tinker.
23:23You're absolutely right.
23:25And I agree with the fan who has mentioned that you don't need to do more chop and change.
23:29A little bit of maturity which Rada, Rishabh Pant can take on his shoulders.
23:34And as he said that he is a bit young.
23:36The experience if he can gather, that will help.
23:39Because they have the stars, especially the foreign players like the Warners, the Mitchell Marsh, the Rommel Bowles, the Mustafizur Rahman.
23:46They have that bunch of players.
23:48And Indian fast bowler.
23:49We are talking about the left-arm Seema.
23:51Who is that I am talking about?
23:52Khalil Ahmed.
23:54Khalil Ahmed.
23:56He bowled with lot of fire.
23:59To be very honest, a little disappointed with Shahrukh Thakur.
24:02He was good with the ball.
24:04But I am afraid he did not contribute with the bat.
24:06But I am sure with this experience, he will learn.
24:08They have a smart captain in Ricky Ponting.
24:11So, without doing much of change, you know, just a little bit of maturity.
24:16Which if he can learn from MS Dhoni, that how to keep his calm and composure.
24:21Where he lost his head in one of the matches where it was a no-ball.
24:24All these things, if he can take care, I am sure he will pay dividends to Delhi.
24:28Right.
24:30I think I will come to Anmol of Punjab Kings who have been patiently waiting.
24:36My apologies to the other fans.
24:38In fact, there is so much to talk about today.
24:41Anmol, finally you finished 6th position on the table.
24:46Once again, a bit of a blow-hot, blow-cold campaign.
24:50Once again, if you look at the positives, Liam Livingstone.
24:54I mean, definitely what an investment he had been for you.
24:58But then again, there are certain question marks about Mayank Agarwal's captaincy.
25:03In some matches, you got the plot mixed up.
25:09How do you sum up your campaign and what do you want from the team in 2023?
25:16Sir, we are coming 6th from last 4 seasons.
25:21From 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022.
25:25From 5 seasons, we are 6th.
25:27It's a height of consistency for us.
25:29And another thing.
25:33Yes, you point out right that there are some of the positives.
25:37It would be Liam Livingstone.
25:39That was a big positive.
25:42Yes, some of them will perform for us too.
25:46Like if you say that, Arshadib.
25:50Arshadib was also a very great investment.
25:54Some of them were saying that he is not a 4 crore worth player.
25:58But he has put the full stop on all of them.
26:02Some of the critics or some of them.
26:05He was your best bowler under pressure situation.
26:10Yes, yes.
26:11If you have seen Manik Agarwal giving an interview.
26:14He was saying that, Paji, give me the ball.
26:16I will bowl the difficult over.
26:18He has stood up every time when the team needs him.
26:21Some of the phases we left out.
26:24Like after that last match against SRH.
26:28Liam finished 4 overs to spare.
26:32And I actually forgot that match.
26:35Like 4 overs to spare.
26:38It came to my mind that if Odian Smith could have thrown that one.
26:43Then we could have GT and we could have qualified.
26:46But some of the phrases we need to conquer next time.
26:53In the coming year.
26:55Yes, coming in the auction.
26:57I would say that in the next year.
26:59There are two parts of my heart.
27:02One is saying that go as a flow.
27:06And another part of my heart says that go in the auction.
27:12Just drop Shahrukh and Odian and pick Ben Stokes.
27:15And just leave the auction.
27:16Nothing change is required.
27:18Well said.
27:20Well said, well said.
27:22Yes, I can see Maaz there.
27:25Hi Maaz.
27:26Yes, our man who has been supporting KKR.
27:30A disappointing season.
27:32Very disappointing season after raising the hopes as a runner-up last year.
27:37There had been no pattern in their campaign.
27:42So, what do you think?
27:46There had been a lot of talk about food sites on the playing 11.
27:50The captain.
27:53A lot was expected out of Sehar Shah who did so well.
27:57Under somewhat congenial circumstances in Delhi.
28:01With his Delhi team.
28:02He couldn't reproduce that.
28:04Whether there was a question of functioning with full autonomy.
28:08His form was also a little up and down.
28:10So, what do you expect from the team?
28:12Do you think they should still persist with their faith on Andre Russell and Sunil Lareen?
28:18Or they do some complete overall?
28:20What do you think, Maaz?
28:22When a season of IPL becomes a 10-team season.
28:25The margin of error becomes very small.
28:27And that's when you need consistency.
28:29And that's one thing that's been missing.
28:31As you said in the pattern of KKR's performance.
28:34Consistency was what was missing.
28:37We won 3-4 matches up front.
28:39And then we started losing matches.
28:41And then we again win 3-4 matches.
28:42Lose a match.
28:43Then win a match.
28:44So, that consistency was not there at all.
28:46So, I think that's one point that was not acceptable in a 10-team season.
28:50Where the margin of error is very small.
28:52But, yeah.
28:53A disappointing season.
28:54But, yes.
28:55I'll go with a few positives as well.
28:57A new captain, Shreyas Iyer.
28:58Yes, he has not been the best.
29:00And not given what we expected from him.
29:03But, you know, when he was the captain for Delhi Capitals for the first season.
29:07He was not so great.
29:10So, maybe this was just a trial ball season for him.
29:13And next season he comes with a better performance with the bat.
29:16And captaincy has been very, very good.
29:19And then another positive was Umesh Yadav coming back into the form.
29:23And giving us those power play wickets that we were missing in the previous season.
29:26And I think I will meet Anmol and Punjab Kings in the auction for Ben Stokes.
29:32And we can get a substitute for Andrew Russell.
29:37And not just depend on him.
29:38And a few more players in opening position.
29:42And maybe a substitute spinner in place of Varun Chakravorty.
29:46Would give us the balance that we were lacking this season.
29:51And we can be the contender for playoffs again for next season.
29:55Maaz, you were saying that you will buy Ben Stokes for Andrew Russell substitution.
30:01I think you would get a star player for only a substitution.
30:05You would not get him in the playing XI.
30:07I mean, you know, substitution as in not just depending on Andrew Russell.
30:12And having another player in the squad or in the playing XI.
30:16Who we can depend on if Andrew Russell fails.
30:19If Ben Stokes fails, Andrew Russell performs.
30:21If Andrew Russell fails, Ben Stokes performs.
30:22I don't think that type of international player is a second choice for any of the team.
30:27Well, if you had a choice between Andrew Russell and Ben Stokes.
30:31I would still go with Andrew Russell in IPL.
30:34I am not talking about international ticket.
30:36But if you see IPL, Andrew Russell has been the man.
30:39Yes, but you know, one thing we will have to keep in mind.
30:43You shouldn't end up making the same mistake which Royals did in the previous years.
30:48Just if you look on those four big names overseas.
30:52And then you don't get an opportunity to get your combination right.
30:55So, that could be an issue.
30:57But we will come to that.
30:58I see Varun is waiting.
31:01I haven't met Varun before.
31:03Varun's full name is Varun Dallamakanti.
31:10Hi Varun, welcome.
31:12Yes, Varun, you are the Sunrisers Hyderabad man among us.
31:18Sunrisers, you know, they raised that glimmer of hope after a poor start.
31:23And definitely, you know, despite not being able to qualify and finishing on the 8th position.
31:31The biggest positive had been Umran Malik got everyone talking.
31:38Then there have been couple of matches where there have been really strong turnarounds.
31:43Five matches you won at one stage on the trot.
31:47Rahul Tripathi's performance.
31:50Then Niklas Buran seemed like he's finally ready to take some responsibility.
31:56But overall, it was an insipid campaign.
31:59You know, from Ken Williamson, we expected a lot more.
32:04So, if you can just tell us that, you know, what does SRH need to do?
32:09I mean, after all, in the short term, they have been one of the consistent teams till say about two years back.
32:16And they have got a title in their pocket.
32:18What do they need to do?
32:20Well, it's been an up and down season for us.
32:23First, we won five and then we lost five.
32:26It wasn't a great consistent season, but okay.
32:30There are a lot of players in our squad who are very young.
32:33Our average age is around 27.
32:35So, it's the youngest squad in the IPL that do.
32:37And many of these players have not even played their 14-match quota.
32:41Like Aidan Markram, Niklas Buran, Malik, Abhishek Sharma, Priyam Garg, he played some.
32:48You know, these players, they never played their 14-game quota.
32:51And SRH has given them the chance to prove their skill set and, you know, to get the full, what can I say, like show of what the IPL is going to be.
33:01So, maybe, you know, after this experience for these guys who just got in their full quota of experience,
33:07maybe by next year, they would know what the IPL is like.
33:10And, you know, they can prepare according to that and play according to the situations as well.
33:14But, you know, when we won those first five games, the pitches were really, you know, helpful to us.
33:19Like it was helping pace a lot.
33:21We had Marco Jansen who was taking wickets consistently.
33:24Purushar Kumar who was, you know, economical.
33:28And then Umran Malik who was also taking wickets consistently.
33:31You know, so it really helped us.
33:33We, even if, you know, Washington Sundar was injured, right, we really did not feel his absence in the first seven games.
33:40Even if you saw the 68 dollar, we really did not even feel his absence.
33:44After that game, you know, we gained a lot of confidence, but then the pitches have changed a lot.
33:49Now it's more spin reliant and that's where our department was completely messed up.
33:55Now there, we have seen the absence of Washington Sundar come in.
33:59Jagadeesh has switched, he did some justice, but again, we need a second spin option.
34:04But Varun, Abhishek was not used, isn't it?
34:08Yeah, that's what I was about to come to.
34:10Abhishek Sharma, he could have bowled.
34:12He bowled well for Punjab as well.
34:14You know, he's a pure all-rounder.
34:15You know, it was just minimal errors, small errors, which bosted us those five other games as well.
34:24If I recall, Abhishek has been used in the past in powerplay as well.
34:28I mean, this time I was quite surprised not to see him at all.
34:32Yeah, I mean, even if not in the powerplay, like we have Washington Sundar, at least you can bowl like an over or two of him in the middle overs as well.
34:39Because, you know, you are using Aiden Markram, who is going at 10 runs per over.
34:43You have Abhishek Sharma on the other end, but Kane Williams unfortunately did not give him the chance.
34:49But with the bag, he is our highest run scorer.
34:52Never expected that.
34:53People said he was a bit overpriced, but he really turned the page, turned the blocks for us.
34:59And, you know, he scored around 450 runs for us this season.
35:02It's been fantastic for him.
35:04And then going to Umran Malik, he just won the Emerging Award as well.
35:08Just saw that.
35:09And it's great to see these young fast bowlers, especially Umran Malik, clocking those 150 kilometers.
35:16He bowled more than 30 this season as well.
35:19So he's firing pace is good.
35:20But if he gets the line and length right as well, every game, he's going to be a man to watch it for in the upcoming seasons as well.
35:26But again, as I said, it's just a recovery season to get the full of 14 game quarter for these players to learn to, you know, experience and come better next season.
35:37But what we need is, as I said, we're missing the spinner in the spin department.
35:43So, you know, many people are now saying like Ben Stokes, Sam Curran.
35:46But personally, I want Shakib Al Hasan just for the spin option.
35:50Right. I mean, he can also give you the batting option.
35:53People talk about his attitude and all.
35:55But let's forget that.
35:56A trophy is more important than the fair play award here.
35:59No, people talk about his attitude when he goes to play for Bangladesh.
36:04He has played for SRH as well.
36:08I mean, like KKR has played for SRH.
36:10And he's done decently with on infielding with the bat and with the ball.
36:14So he wouldn't be a bad investment.
36:16I want to I don't want to see like Romare Sheppard anymore in the team.
36:21No offense to him, but I think he's just a bit too overpriced.
36:24These West Indian guys, they went a lot expensive like Cody and Smith and Romare Sheppard to be examples.
36:31They might have not played all the games.
36:33And the only reason is they have not been going consistent with the bat or the ball.
36:37So they have been a bit overrated.
36:39So a 7.75 crores may be in the bank.
36:42And then a Sean Abbott, I haven't really used him.
36:45I think only one game.
36:46And why do we really need him?
36:48A net bowler, you can get a net bowler for 20 lakhs.
36:50No issues for that.
36:51So maybe Romare Sheppard and Sean Abbott out of the spot.
36:54And as I said, someone like Shaki Balhasan can help us.
36:58If you want a spinner, Riyan Bala can spin.
37:01No, I'm sorry.
37:03We are not that lucky.
37:06We had Vijay Shankar, we had Kedar Jadhav.
37:09We had Vijay Shankar, Kedar Jadhav.
37:11Our luck has run out there only.
37:13I love this banter, guys.
37:15Why do we need Riyan Parag again?
37:17Yes, yes. True.
37:19Okay, Gautam, you will have to give me a couple of minutes.
37:22You know what, I will sign off.
37:23This banter is going on superb.
37:25So before I sign off, I want to thank all of you guys, all the lovely fans.
37:29You have been very, very good, very passionate about your teams.
37:32And we hope we can catch up with you.
37:34The year will pass soon.
37:35Or we will have you guys in the World Cup or everything.
37:39Thank you, Satish.
37:40Thank you, Gautam.
37:42I'm running out of battery and gas.
37:44Aneesbhai, before you sign off, you just need to give a little recap about the wonderful competition.
37:56How did the audience do in terms of prediction?
38:03Oh, yes.
38:04You know, Gautam, this IPL, which was a 10-team IPL, was one of the most unpredictable IPL.
38:10We couldn't judge a winner except for one team, Gujarat title, who were bossing probably the tournament.
38:15So it was very difficult.
38:16And we had a tournament game, rather prediction, where you had to predict the winner.
38:21And you could win with an attire of Mr. Rishikesh, a t-shirt, a cap, as well as a one-year digital subscription.
38:28So we thank all the fans who came on our page and actually predicted the winner.
38:32It was difficult, but that's the beauty about Doubt News.
38:35You come to our page and win prizes.
38:36So thank you, guys.
38:37I'll sign off.
38:38And once again, the commiseration to Ram Ganesh.
38:41I'm sure RR has done well, much more to the expectation.
38:45They could have done better, but you have to give it to Gujarat.
38:48They were the better team, they bossed, and they deserved to win.
38:50See you, guys.
38:52Thank you, Aneesbhai.
38:53Thanks a lot.
38:54Bye-bye.
38:56Thank you so much.
38:58Thank you so much.
38:59I will quickly come to the youngest among the fans.
39:05If Arjun is still awake.
39:08Arjun, are you there?
39:09Yeah, I'm there.
39:11Hello.
39:12Yeah, he's there.
39:14Hi, Arjun.
39:15Hi, Arjun.
39:16We all are excited.
39:18And from tomorrow, we are going to have, you know, what is a withdrawal symptom?
39:23When something ends, you feel a sense of emptiness, something like that.
39:29So, Arjun, I want to see.
39:31We have spoken about, you know, Chennai Super Kings not being the same team this season.
39:38Issues with the captaincy, etc., etc.
39:40Finally, you know, just a few words from you that, you know, how the team, I'm sure, with this kind of a history behind them,
39:49they will turn a new leaf and come out with a new approach.
39:52What do you want to see in the team?
39:55Do you still want to see, of course, MS Dhoni will be playing, so he's possibly going to be the captain.
40:00Who else but him?
40:02What kind of changes do you want to see, Arjun, very quickly, if we can have you on that?
40:06The captaincy issue has been resolved.
40:14It's going to be Dhoni next season.
40:16That's the way.
40:17Yes, yes.
40:19This season, our batting did not come up to the mark that I did expect.
40:24But I think it was just a seasonal issue.
40:28We will recover from that.
40:29To think about next season, I think our batting lineup would be much more suited to the conditions.
40:37Also, see, Deepak Chahar is going to come back.
40:40Deepak Chahar is going to come back.
40:42He would have made a lot of difference on these weekends.
40:45The only problem is with our bowling.
40:48Of course, Chahar is going to come back.
40:53I think we need to groom one of our rookie fast bowlers.
41:00I'm thinking Simarjeet Singh into becoming a good bowler for CSK.
41:07And I'm thinking we need another pacer.
41:11One good international talent.
41:14Maybe that will come up next season.
41:16I don't know.
41:17But someone on the international level that can help us.
41:22That can be a good pace bowler for us.
41:25Maybe an all-rounder pacer from West Indies.
41:30I had a question.
41:33Do you think Ravindra Jadeja is going to continue with CSK?
41:35Yes.
41:37It's a big question.
41:38Yes.
41:39Let us put the ball on Satish's court.
41:43Because we may need another session on this.
41:47Satish, can we have your take on that?
41:51I'm following on social media and all that.
41:56It looks end of the road for Jadeja.
41:58Generally, Chennai is not the team that reacts so quickly.
42:03Because if you look at the previous episode, it was with Raina.
42:06And after that, though they patched up, Raina didn't last too long.
42:11And today, he is not even in any part of any of the franchises.
42:15So, I hope it is not the case with Jadeja.
42:19Because he is a valuable member of the team.
42:22And I hope whatever the issues are, supposedly gets resolved.
42:27Though we don't know much.
42:28There is no real communication.
42:30It's all about speculation and all that.
42:34So, I hope Ravindra Jadeja comes back.
42:37But even otherwise, I think the team is well-served with Santner there.
42:42And we have enough among the spinners.
42:44The team is actually, from the dad's army, Chennai is now turning into a younger team.
42:51Of course, with the ever-young Dhoni leading the side.
42:56He keeps to be getting younger and younger by the year.
42:58Right.
43:01Well, finally, I will come to Mr. Naresh Mansukhani of Mumbai Indians.
43:06Naresh, sorry to keep you waiting.
43:09As I keep repeating, today there have been simply plenty of things to talk about.
43:14I think I will come to you with a different, to have your take on something else.
43:21See, we have spoken about Mumbai.
43:24We have spoken about the bright spots in the batting whom we saw in the last few wins.
43:30It could be a different Mumbai next year with Archer coming in and Sky regaining his fitness.
43:35What I want to ask from you is, this bigger and better IPL, this kind of really lived up to its promise
43:45with the kind of intensity in competition.
43:47These two newcomers, the way they have delivered.
43:52How do you look back at it in these two months?
43:55Maybe a little too long, but how do you look back at it, Naresh?
43:58Thanks. Thanks, Gautam.
44:01First, I am sorry I got late getting back from the stadium.
44:04I could witness this final. It was a good experience.
44:07Other thing, on your question, yes, it is good to see more teams, more talent coming out.
44:14And we got Hardik Pandya from the finishing school of Mumbai Indians in the end.
44:20One of the leaders. So, yeah, that is something good that we have seen.
44:27I think most of them who led the teams have really done well.
44:31And they have taken a lot of learnings back.
44:35I think we had only two overseas captains, right, in this season.
44:39So, 10 teams, yeah, new talent.
44:44Mumbai, the struggle would be on getting their bowling in place.
44:48Batting looks good now, what we saw in the last few games.
44:51Geoffrey Archer, will he be fit enough or do we join the race for Ben Stokes?
44:58We don't know.
45:00And some of the good talent which unfortunately did not get a game,
45:06some other area to look at on how that can happen.
45:10You know, we had some international Navi and all not getting a game at all.
45:13So, what happens?
45:15And I felt Fabian Allen was underutilized by Mumbai.
45:18So, we cannot take a call on him at this point of time.
45:21And the biggest decision needs to be made by Pollard himself,
45:25along with the franchise of what happens to the future.
45:28But I think 10 teams, we don't know whether the number of games is going to increase
45:35to home and away 18 games per team from next year.
45:38We'll have to wait for that.
45:40But definitely we have seen some real, real good talent,
45:44especially in the bowling side, especially the left-armers.
45:48Mohsin Khan and Yash Dayal, he played today the final.
45:52So, some good talent we have seen.
45:54And it can only get better from here.
45:57But it has to give results as a national team going ahead.
46:01So, that is what we'll have to see whether we are meeting that objective.
46:04Right.
46:06Well, it's my mistake.
46:08I've got one of the top four finisher teams.
46:13Vinit had been waiting very patiently, the Lucknow Super Giants fan.
46:18Another team who, unfortunately, we didn't speak on the same breath
46:23because we spoke so much about Gujarat, who kind of blew our minds.
46:27Lucknow Super Giants, the Hindi belt has got a team who made its presence felt.
46:35They went all the way up to the last four.
46:38And finally, they couldn't make it.
46:41It's a different issue.
46:43But I'll come to you, Vinit.
46:45Surely, you must be happy with the way things went.
46:49There had been talk about, okay, it's too overtly reliant on KL Rahul and Quinton De Kock.
46:56But a team, in a 10-team scenario, if it's making the last four
47:02and you've got Gautam Gambhir's presence, whose cricketing equipment is so sharp.
47:07I mean, that's why I was pinning a lot of hopes on them when they came to Eden
47:11because of his familiarity with the venue.
47:13It didn't work.
47:15How do you sum it up, Vinit?
47:17And how do you see the team moving on from here?
47:20Well, first things first, you know, again, it was a new team.
47:26So, there was a little bit of skepticism for a lot of people
47:29whether they could actually go on to the playoffs.
47:32And especially, you know, many people also constantly saying that
47:37maybe KL Rahul wouldn't exactly be the best person to captain
47:41because of how he's captained Kings XI Punjab, who's now Punjab Kings.
47:45So, I think he's done a decent job overall to get them to the playoffs.
47:51But then again, you know, at times, he's been a little slow
47:57because of the fact that, you know, the captaincy has added a little bit of pressure to him, you know,
48:02to maybe not throw his wicket away, which we saw in the eliminator against RCB.
48:07And I'd say, but the team overall, if I tell you, it has been good on paper.
48:14But I can see maybe next auction, they could actually think of maybe changing the middle order a bit
48:22because the middle order has been shaky.
48:24As you said before, this season, they've been overly reliant on KL Rahul and Quintin Dukov to provide that start.
48:32And although Deepak Hooda has surprised many of us, including myself,
48:37because in the past season, Deepak Hooda has just blown hot and cold.
48:42But this season, you know, he's been the mainstay of that middle order.
48:46But the others haven't exactly fired.
48:49Stoinis has done a bit of finishing occasionally here and there.
48:52But Krunal Pandya has failed.
48:54Like, he hasn't exactly shown that consistency with the bat that we want him to show.
48:59So, I expect Lucknow to also maybe go into the auction for Ben Stokes if he's available.
49:04So that, you know, they can maybe strengthen the middle order.
49:10But how many overseas all-rounders do you need?
49:13I mean, see, people can also bat against their grains.
49:17A finisher can anchor the innings if need be.
49:21Hardik is a very good example.
49:23Exactly. And that's the thing about Ben Stokes.
49:26That's why, you know, he's so much in demand for many teams.
49:29Like, you know, we had earlier seen Maaz discuss about it.
49:33KKR would probably want to go into the auction for that.
49:37And that's the reason. Because Ben Stokes has such a high value.
49:41He's proven that in the international stage that, you know, he can anchor the innings.
49:45And he can also be a finisher.
49:47So, I'd say, we have a couple of foreign players who are warming the benches.
49:52So, probably, you know, cut our ties with them.
49:55Get better value for money. Yes.
49:57Exactly. Get better value for money.
49:59And I'd say, maybe get another spinner so that it might take a bit of pressure of Ravi Bishno.
50:05Because he's the only specialist spinner in the squad.
50:08Krishnapa Gautam, he hasn't played regularly in the squad.
50:11And Krunal Pandya, well, again, just like with the bat, he's also shown inconsistencies with the ball as well.
50:19So, I'd say, you know, maybe try for Ben Stokes and a specialist spinner.
50:26And I think we should actually go on to win the tournament.
50:30And maybe, I'd say, this might not happen though.
50:34I think Jason Holder could be a better captain than KL Rahul.
50:39I mean, making Jason Holder the captain might actually give KL Rahul a bit more freedom to play.
50:44Because when KL Rahul is not a captain…
50:48But now he's the India captain.
50:50Yeah, that's the thing. But when he's not a captain, he plays for…
50:55Actually, Vinit, I would have come to Satish before, you know, kind of wrapping up.
51:00I mean, there are still lot of issues.
51:02But, you know, we have tried to handle as much as we can, looking ahead at the season also.
51:08So now, in about less than 10 days' time, we've got the home series starting in South Africa, where KL is the captain.
51:15So, and, you know, this thing about KL, I mean, when he's batting first, look at his average and look at his strike rate.
51:24When he's chasing, he looks like a different batsman with an average in his 20s.
51:29And he's actually facing quite a bit of flak for the way he went about his task in the eliminator.
51:36So, I'll come to Satish. I mean, how can he…
51:39You know, there are any number of technically accomplished batsmen who are doing their job even when they're chasing.
51:47So, what goes wrong? I mean, does it become tight? I mean, what does he need to do?
51:52There is enough experience. He's been in international cricket since 2014.
51:56What does he need to do, Satish?
51:58No, but I think the problem with KL Rahul, especially when he plays for the IPL franchise is, he knows he is a mainstay.
52:06And the moment he gets out, it puts a big disadvantage, it makes it a big disadvantage to his team.
52:14So that's where he was hamstrung when he was in Punjab. That's where he is struggling with Lucknow.
52:22But the same doesn't happen when he plays for India.
52:25Because he knows that even if he gets out, there are enough dependable players down the order.
52:30Here, Lucknow… Stoinis was blowing hot and cold.
52:34When you move him up the order, when you give him enough number of balls, he is failing.
52:39But when you keep him later in the order, he scores those quick runs.
52:42So, again, it was a difficult choice for him.
52:45Yes, Huda supporting him was good.
52:47But finally, it was boiling down to AB or him.
52:52And I think one of them needed to stay till the end for them to see them winning.
52:57I think that's where the pressure comes in on him.
53:01And it's a self-inflicted pressure to some extent.
53:05Because the team, if they had a good all-rounder or a good batter who could come and get those consistent runs
53:12like what Miller did for Gujarat, maybe he would have played much more freely than what he was.
53:17Right. I think a big takeaway from all this conversation is like Ben Stokes,
53:25if he is registered in the mini-auction next year, he is going to be a real hot property.
53:32That's the drift I get from talking from all the teams including young Arjun.
53:38Because he is a guy who can take multitasking in cricket to such a level that you are almost recruiting two guys.
53:45Not just an all-rounder.
53:47So are we looking at 20 crores for Ben Stokes next season?
53:50If anybody has the money.
53:53If you have gone up to 17 crores for K. Rahul, you never know where this is going to end.
54:01But he has the cap and all, you will have to see.
54:03This time, the purses were loosened and it was something like 90 crores.
54:08So that won't be the case.
54:11So let us see. A lot of interesting points in this discussion.
54:17We needed to take this up at the end of the season.
54:23So I would like to thank Satish for giving his time and all the fans who had turned up.
54:29The fans especially. Fans and Anisbhai for regularly coming and keeping the conversation going
54:35and keeping the interest going. It's been a very long time.
54:38Lovely. Thank you. Thank you, everybody.
54:41Yes.
54:43Thanks a lot. We hope to see you next time around.
54:48It was a wonderful experience to you guys and see you. Good night.
