00:00Good day and welcome to the Gulf News Update for Sunday, May the 14th.
00:06Here are the top stories at this hour.
00:09North Korea fired a ballistic missile today in defiance of calls to rein in its weapons
00:14program.
00:15The test comes days after a new leader in its old rival South Korea came to power pledging
00:20to engage it in dialogue.
00:21The US Pacific Command said it was assessing the type of missile, but it was not consistent
00:27with an intercontinental ballistic missile.
00:30The Syrian army and its allies are on the verge of completely seizing the rebel-held
00:34district of Kabul on the edge of Damascus.
00:37The move follows more than two months of aerial strikes and artillery shelling, rebels and
00:42state media said today.
00:43But rebels said they still held a small pocket within the neighborhood that lies in the northeastern
00:49edge of the capital.
00:51Emmanuel Macron will be sworn in as the youngest ever president of France today.
00:55He inherits a country where economic malaise and security concerns drove extremist parties
01:01to their highest ever scores in this year's election.
01:05Two-time champions Mumbai Indians held their nerves to beat Kolkata Knight Riders by nine
01:10runs and topped the Indian Premier League table on Saturday.
01:14Mumbai will play the second-place side at Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday for a berth in
01:19the final.
01:20Earlier, Sunrisers Hyderabad cemented their place in the playoffs after they beat Gujarat
01:25Lions by eight wickets in Kanpur.
01:28Portugal's Salvador Sobral won the Eurovision Song Contest with a romantic ballad that challenged
01:34the event's decades-long reputation for cheesy, glittery excess.
01:39Sobral sang his Amar Pelos Dois, Love for Both, in a high, clear tenor accompanied by
01:45quiet strings and a piano.
01:47The 25 other competitors mainly performed on a wide stage backed by flashing lights,
01:53bursts of flames and other special effects.
01:57And finally, the weather.
01:58Today's high across the UAE will be 38 degrees Celsius, dropping to 29 degrees at night.
02:03That's all for now.
02:04Thanks for watching.
02:05And as always, you can get the latest news at gulfnews.com.
